These rookie WRs are the best fantasy value picks

by Alex Michael: @dynastygurunfl on Twitter.

So, you’ve heard of DeVonta Smith and Ja’Marr Chase but you don’t have a top pick in this year’s rookie draft? Or you’re doing a standard or a dynasty set-up and you’re not looking at the WRs with the most hype this off-season, you want to win in the long-haul! Well, look no further! My value picks should give you some hope especially, if you haven’t been able to follow college football this year!

Highest-graded SEC WR seasons:
1. DeVonta Smith ('20) – 94.0
2.

By the end of this article, you will have five names to look for in the 2021 draft this year. We will have to hope that:
a) these guys get a good landing-spot and;
b) the hype-train doesn’t catch them, so that they can go “under-the-radar” and onto-your-roster!

This is my favourite time of the year and I’m glad that I can share this with some of you!

It is important that we look at two key factors when analyzing players prior to the draft. The first is ultimately what kind of talent they have and we have stats to back that up as well, as well as some video showing you what they’re capable of! The second thing to consider is the potential landing spots (this could also help you get ahead in dynasty formats)!

Landing Spots

Now, at this point in the year, we can’t be sure what will transpire with regards to free agency. As it stands, there are a few wide receivers who will enter free agency at the end of the season (including some big names) such as Curtis Samuel, Chris Godwin, Kenny Golladay, T.Y. Hilton amongst many more, solid players!

These are the places I would be looking at with the most intrigue, the teams with more than one wide receivers hitting free agency. here are a few to take note of:

– Carolina Panthers (Curtis Samuel, Pharoh Cooper, Keith Kirkwood and Brandon Zylstra)
– Chicago Bears (Allen Robinson, Cordarrelle Patterson and Dwanye Harris)
– Cleveland Browns (Rashard Higgins, Khadarel Hodge, Marvin Hall and Taywan Taylor)
– Detroit Lions (Kenny Golladay, Marvin Jones, Mohamed Sanu and Danny Amendola)
– Indianapolis Colts (T.Y. Hilton and Zach Pascal)
– Jacksonville Jaguars (Chris Conley, Keelan Cole and Dede Westbrook)
– Kansas City Chiefs (Sammy Watkins, Demarcus Robinson and Byron Pringle)
– Seattle Seahawks (Phillip Dorsett, Josh Gordon and David Moore)
– Tampa Bay Buccaneers (Chris Godwin, Antonio Brown and Jaydon Mickens)
– Tennessee Titans (Corey Davis, Khalif Raymond and Nick Westbrook)

There are of course plenty of other options for incoming wide receivers but, last year’s free agency was pretty wild and with the pandemic still afoot all over the country and teams protecting who they have, these are the likely options again, as it stands!

We can also list a couple of more teams who don’t have a stand-out wide receiver and may also be in the market for a new one:

New England Patriots: With Damiere Byrd also set to hit free agency, it would leave the Patriots with Julien Edelman whose career is winding down, and 2nd-year pair Jakobi Meyers and N’Keal Harry. Whilst the two have done well in their respective roles, Meyers’ contributions have been sporadic and Harry has often doubled-up as a blocker for a lot of plays. With a change in QB likely in New England, this could also mean that the Patriots acquire a shiny-new receiver to boot.

New York Giants: With Darius Slayton not able to produce on a consistent basis, the injury to Sterling Shepard that kept him out of the first 6 games of the season, this is definitely an area that the New York Giants will look to bolster in the 2021 draft. With the confirmed 11th pick, they may be going for a receiver in the first round.

The Talent

So, there is a good amount of talent this year in the wide receiver category, you just need to look a bit deeper to find it! So, who isn’t attracting a lot of buzz?

Rashod Bateman (Minnesota Golden Gophers)

Probably the most well-known in this list. Rashod originally opted-out of the 2020 season after the Big Ten canceled the 2020 season and Minnesota that 2019 was the last time they got to see the receiver suit up. However, when the Big Ten reinstated the season, Bateman opted back in. He didn’t have the greatest amount of time to showcase and warm-in to the season but, still managed two TDs in five games. It did look like Bateman was holding back somewhat but, this could be down to the fact that there was a larger gap than usual in this off-season and also, having committed to the draft process in November, he wanted to make sure he was ready to go for that.

Minnesota's Rashod Bateman (6-2, 210) is an advanced route-runner with strong hands in open and contested-catch situations.

He’s not a rare athlete, but he still creates separation quickly at and away from the LOS — very smart football player and likely top-50 pick. pic.twitter.com/lInR8uwWhp
— Austin Gayle (@austingayle_) January 8, 2021

Bateman really came into people’s periphery when playing as the WR2 in the 2018 and 2019 season, alongside Tyler Johnson (now with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers). Bateman scored 11 TDs in 13 games in 2019 and gained plaudits on his own for his versatility. Bateman is a guy who is very grounded and happy to take responsibility in games. Bateman is as comfortable in the slot as he is running a deep play. If I were to draw a comparison to a current NFL wide receiver, I would have him as someone who has a similar style to Tyler Boyd.

_______________________________________________

Amon-Ra St. Brown (USC Trojans)

The younger brother of the Packers wide-receiver Equanemious St. Brown, Amon-Ra should be on people’s radar going into this year’s draft and not only because he has the best name ever! St. Brown is a really physical receiver who loves to get downfield and is very productive when he does. We can only guess that this physicality comes from having a father who was Mr. Universe twice! Going into the 2020 season, he was the clear WR1 in Southern Carolina and would have had a lot more opportunity to demonstrate his prowess had the PAC-12 season not been postponed.

Amon-Ra St Brown
6’1” 195
Legitimate X Receiver with a great catch radius and frame, and plenty of speed and athleticism
77-1042-6 his sophomore year, solid junior year in 2020 in a shortened season
Brother of Green Bay Packers WR Equanimeous St. Brown@amonra_stbrown pic.twitter.com/PZV1UkjMCJ
— Chris Mallee (@mallee_chris_24) January 10, 2021

St. Brown only played in 6 games this season but managed 7 touchdowns, including 4 TDs against Washington State. If I were to draw a comparison to a current NFL wide receiver, I would have him as someone who has a similar style to Will Fuller (without the injury tag). St. Brown has an inch and 10lbs on Will Fuller which slows him down a little bit, but not enough that it reduces his ability to make something happen. St. Brown would suit a team like the Texans with Fuller set to hit free agency or even the Chiefs given their exodus of receivers (as it stands!). It will be interesting to see where St. Brown lands but, if it’s for a team with a QB that has a big arm and they’re lacking in the deep-play, he could be a very good under-the-radar acquisition in fantasy football.

College Receiving Stats

Season

Team

Games

Rec.

Rec.
_______________________________________________

Trevon Grimes (Florida Gators)

Trevon Grimes may be a familiar name to you, given the hype around the Florida Gators team because of quarterback Kyle Trask, hot-prospect tight end, Kyle Pitts and Kadarius Toney but, lurking in between those three big names is a 6ft”5, 215lb receiver who has a knack for finding the end-zone. With eight touchdowns in 10 games for the Gators this season, Grimes should propel himself into a decent draft position this spring, especially after the SEC Championship game performance against Alabama, where he put a 50-yard touchdown on top cornerback prospect, Patrick Surtain II.

Trevon Grimes in jump-ball situations?

Advantage – Grimes#Devy pic.twitter.com/D2xKyaJwI7
— Marc Poust (@fatpoust) November 21, 2020

As a result of Grimes’ natural size, he has an advantage over almost every cornerback he’s up again. If I was to draw a comparison to a current NFL wide receiver, I would have him as someone who has a similar style to Chase Claypool. It’s a stretch I know but, if we look at someone like Chase Claypool who was a third-round pick for the Pittsburgh Steelers in the 2020 draft and is around the same height/weight as Grimes he had a fantastic rookie season in the NFL and likewise with Grimes if he is drafted into a good situation and the ball goes in his direction, something good should happen.

College Receiving Stats

Season

Team

Games

Rec.

Rec.
_______________________________________________

Michael Strachan (Charleston Golden Eagles)

Now, we’re digging deep into NCAA Division II for this one and I think that this will ultimately excite a few of you because Michael Strachan (pronounced “Straan”) is the exact guy that you want to sneak into your draft this year. Another big receiver, at 6’5” and around the 225lb mark, this is a guy who leads by example. Originally from the Bahamas and with a background in track athletics (and even trained for the Bahamas 2020 Olympics track team, before the postponement due to Covid-19), he possesses great intelligence with his route running. If he gets picked this year (and even if he doesn’t), he is a hot-stash prospect.

Our guy @Mike_Playmaker invited to participate in the NFLPA Collegiate Bowl!

If I were to draw a comparison to a current NFL wide receiver, I’m going to go out on a limb here but, I would have him as someone who has a similar style to Mike Evans. Strachan matches Evans with his size and when you have a guy that runs the 400m in 47.3 seconds and 200m in 21.69 seconds, and models his game on players like Julio Jones and Calvin Johnson, you know you’re onto something good! Strachan also runs the 40-yard dash consistently at around the 4.4 second mark which is equally impressive. Strachan has broken a lot of records at Charleston and if that wasn’t enough, check his statistics below:

_______________________________________________

Seth Williams (Auburn Tigers)

Seth Williams has a mixed fanbase going into this NFL 2021 Draft but, I’m a firm believer that he could be something special. Seth Williams has been a consistent performer for the Auburn Tigers and as a freshman managed to have 20.54 yards per reception, which is solid. He has had the leading yards-per-reception of all of the main receivers at Auburn in each of his three years (including whilst Darius Slayton was there) and this should give you a flavour as to what type of player he could be in the NFL. Williams has good hands and whilst not a completely finished product he shows that with the right type of coaching, he could be a great future talent.

Report: Auburn WR Seth Williams expected to enter NFL Draft:https://t.co/EfleacHJNm pic.twitter.com/rotiyYsZpI
— 247Sports (@247Sports) January 4, 2021

Of the three receivers from Auburn who are poised to enter this year’s draft, Williams is known as the playmaker. If I were to draw a comparison to a current NFL wide receiver, I would have him as someone who has a similar style to Mike Williams or Michael Gallup. By this, I mean that Seth Williams would suit a team whereby he’s not taking heavy loads, his strengths lie on the outside and he could be a good compliment to a star-receiver in the long-haul. Once he improves on any weaknesses he is one of the guys who can eventually become a top receiver himself, similarly to Calvin Ridley who has benefited from heavy coverage on Julio Jones. I think a team like the Browns would be a good landing spot for Williams but, I guess we’ll just have to wait and see!

Top rookie rbs can make out to be great value picks

By Alex Michael: @dynastygurunfl on Twitter

So, you’ve heard of Najee Harris and Travis Etienne but you don’t have a top pick in this year’s rookie draft? Or you’re doing a standard or a dynasty set-up and you’re not looking at the RBs with the most hype this off-season, you want to win in the long-haul! Well, look no further! My value picks should give you some hope especially, if you haven’t been able to follow college football this year!

THIS NAJEE HARRIS HURDLE ? #SCtop10 pic.twitter.com/3qiYJq9wPi
— SportsCenter (@SportsCenter) January 1, 2021

By the end of this article, you will have five names to look for in the 2021 draft this year. We will have to hope that:
a) these guys get a good landing-spot and;
b) the hype-train doesn’t catch them so that they can go “under-the-radar” and onto-your-roster!

This is my favorite time of the year and I’m glad that I can share this with some of you!

It is important that we look at two key factors when analysing players prior to the draft.

As it stands, there are a few running backs who will enter free agency at the end of the season (including some big names) such as Aaron Jones, Chris Carson, Todd Gurley, Leonard Fournette and Kenyan Drake amongst many more, solid players!

These are the places I would be looking at with the most intrigue, the teams with more than one running back hitting free agency. here are a few to take note of:

– Atlanta Falcons (Todd Gurley and Brian Hill)
– Green Bay Packers (Aaron Jones and Jamaal Williams)
– Kansas City Chiefs (Darrel Williams and Le’Veon Bell)
– New England Patriots (Rex Burkhead and James White)
– New York Giants (Dion Lewis, Wayne Gallman, Devonta Freeman and Alfred Morris)
– Philadelphia Eagles (Corey Clement and Boston Scott)
– Seattle Seahawks (Chris Carson and Carlos Hyde)

There are of course plenty of other options for incoming running backs but, last year’s free agency was pretty wild and with the pandemic still afoot all over the country and teams protecting who they have, these are the likely options again, as it stands!

We can also list a couple of more teams who don’t have a stand-out running back and may also be in the market for a new running back:

Miami Dolphins: The Dolphins do have both Myles Gaskin and Salwon Ahmed and I don’t mean to be unfair to these guys because they’re both pretty good and have proved themselves this year, when the opportunity has arisen. My thoughts are that with Matt Breida set to hit free agency, this could leave the Dolphins with a dilemma on how to use the two running backs they have left. If they look to trade one, it could leave space for the Dolphins to draft another running back to sit behind Gaskin and ease their way into the league.

New York Jets: After drafting Lamical Perine in 2020 and picking up second-year free agent Ty Johnson the Jets also have some options but, with an impending change of personnel and a shake-up of the squad, this could be another likely landing spot for a rookie running back, potentially in the 2nd or 3rd round, especially if the Jets make a move for college coach.

The Talent

So, there is a good amount of talent this year in the running back category, you just need to look a bit deeper to find it! So, who isn’t attracting a lot of buzz?

Michael Carter (North Carolina Tar Heels)

Probably the most well-known in this list. Now you may have heard of the other Tar Heels running back entering the draft, Javonte Williams but, Michael Carter is equally worthy of your attention, don’t let Williams’ name make you think twice. Both Carter and Williams this season formed one of college football’s most formidable running back corps and pretty much, in the past two years as well, with the pinnacle of their contributions coming in their game against Miami (FL) this year. The pair broke the record for the “Most Rush Yards by Teammates in FBS History (single-game)” after Michael Carter ran for 308 yards from 24 rush attempts and Williams ran for 236 yards from 23 rush attempts.

Really like this play from Michael Carter, RB UNC

– Great balance & footwork pic.twitter.com/TRpFPn6pBX
— JWack (@JaredWackerly) January 9, 2021

Carter is very good at drawing tackles from opponents but, because he has a great deal of speed he can avoid the tackles when they come. If I were to draw a comparison to a current NFL running back, I would have him as someone who has a similar style to Chris Carson. He’s competent as a runner and a receiver and one thing that Carter has to his credit is resilience. We’re talking about a guy who can take hits, get up and do it all over again. In 2020, Carter’s had 8.0 yards-per-carry and he really is a guy who relishes hard-work.

Some may say that Carter is a little under-sized being 5’9 and around the 200lbs mark so whoever he joins will more than likely use him in rotation and he’ll probably feature more as a receiver. This is a good thing, because it’ll allow him to bulk up a little bit and it also means he will have chances to be involved. If we look at someone such as Chase Edmonds, another player Carter can also be compared to, he is the same height/weight and he gets along in the NFL just fine!

_______________________________________________

Brenden Knox (Marshall Thundering Herd)

Told you I had some hot takes! Well, Brenden Knox is one of those guys who runs with a lot of power. Knox is around the 220lb mark and knows how to use all of it to bulldoze through tackles and get into the end-zone. In both his 2019 and 2020 seasons he has over 10 rushing TDs, and whilst the majority of those came in goal range, that doesn’t mean he lacks the ability to put up big runs too. In 2020, he rushed for over 100 yards in 5 consecutive games.

Watching film on Grant Wells. However, why aren’t more people talking about Junior RB Brenden Knox. NFL size and speed. I think he shows good patience and vision. Finished 3rd nationally last year in rushing among sophomores. Effective in the receiving game as well. Good lateral pic.twitter.com/SyKkdEpR0S
— Matthew Bruening (@SportsfanaticMB) September 23, 2020

The above tweet sums up what Knox can bring to the table, he has great vision and if you look back at some of his 2019 sophomore highlights you will see this demonstrated on several occasions. If I were to draw a comparison to a current NFL running back, I would have him as someone who has a similar style to Kenyan Drake. He’s a big guy and useful at the goal-line. However, Knox has the capabilities of creating something on each down and is good at making himself unpredictable and subsequently, a nightmare for opposition defenders.

Rakeem Boyd (Arkansas Razorbacks)

This guy looks familiar, right? Well any “Last Chance U” fans will recognize Rakeem Boyd from his appearances in Season 3 of the show. After Boyd was moved away from Texas A&M, he had a stint at Independence Community College in Kansas which earned him respect as well as transfer to the University of Arkansas, and when he got to Arkansas, they loved him.

Boyd sat out the final stretch of the 2020 college season after a disappointing start and contracting COVID-19. This was more for his own protection and the offensive-line were well, absent and didn’t create openings for Boyd to run into. There were some fans really upset that Boyd chose not to complete the season and think of it what you may, it is only testament to Boyd’s ability that the Razorbacks fans will miss him, as he prepares for the 2021 draft.

_______________________________________________

Keaontay Ingram (Texas Longhorns)

A powerful runner if there ever was one. Ingram has also been handy in the receiving game and almost a relief to Sam Ehlinger, on occasion. Ingram had a disappointing 2020 season but this isn’t representative of what Ingram is capable of. Ingram has a lot of speed and really good vision to boot, he could turn into the real-deal under the right tutelage and ultimately if he gets a decent landing spot.

If I were to draw a comparison to a current NFL running back, I would have him as someone who has a similar style to Kareem Hunt. Ingram is 6’0 and 220lbs, Hunt is 5’11 and around 220lbs, so they are almost identical in size, not that size equates to talent but, it goes along way especially, in the NFL. The tape speaks for itself, and he already looks the part. AS with all the rookies there are of course things that Ingram needs to work on but, this is a guy you want, huge upside potential!

Jah-Maine Martin (North Carolina A&T Aggies)

Get familiar with this name. This is who people will be looking at in six to eight weeks time and it’s better that you get ahead of the curve! The Aggies didn’t manage to play in 2020 but, Martin had a breakout season in 2019 where he ran 187 times for 1,446 yards and 23 TDs averaging 120.5 scrimmage yards per game and a yards-per-carry of 7.73 yards!

Jah-Maine Martin with the 75 yd TD Rush ? @NCATAGGIES @NCATFootball @MEACSports @CelebrationBowl 2019 pic.twitter.com/vdnguRVo1Y
— Black College Exp (NABJ Member) Journalist (@BlackCollegeExp) December 11, 2020

Martin is a finely-oiled machine, versatile, and a very tough-runner. If I were to draw a comparison to a current NFL running back, I would have him as someone who has a similar style to Leonard Fournette. When Martin is on the ball it is an exciting thing and when he cuts past defenders it’s almost comical at how little opposition defenders can get on him, he breaks tackles, and then to top it off his has great speed and accelerates into space, if the gap is available.

To find out what Jah-Maine Martin has been up to during 2020, read the below article:
https://www.musiccitymiracles.com/2020/10/1/21432829/2021-nfl-draft-introducing-jah-maine-martin-the-engine-of-north-carolina-a-ts-offense

Martin was utilised as a three-down back at North Carolina A&T and could easily carry that responsibility in the NFL, if given an opportunity. From the same college as Tarik Cohen, the now Senior was selected in the first-team All-MEAC squad in 2019. It’s a shame we didn’t get to see Martin in action again this year but, I’m hopeful that this will be just the beginning.
