Are the Arizona Cardinals poised to make the playoffs?

By: Ian Evans (@ianacevans)

The 2021-2022 NFL season is quickly drawing near as kickoff is just three weeks away. We have already seen teams trying to decide which players will make the cut for their 53-man rosters as the preseason is in full swing. We have also seen rookies such as Justin Fields shine and have seen other players turn heads with the reps they have been receiving.

However, every year there are the regular contenders who usually get most of the attention from the media and experts. Teams such as the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, the Kansas City Chiefs, the Green Bay Packers, and the Buffalo Bills are already seen as the front runners to win Super Bowl LVI. But there are some teams who could shock these contenders during the regular and postseason as some mid-tier teams have improved significantly during the offseason.

Super Bowl 56 favorites?

Who is your pick to win it all? pic.twitter.com/KTwQ57Z36Q
— PFF (@PFF) May 8, 2021

There are some teams that made changes to their roster in hopes of planning for the future, while a few teams made moves to make them playoff contenders or better. But there are some teams who made key acquisitions and roster moves that could disturb the power rankings throughout the duration of next season. With this being said, here are three dark horse teams to look out for the 2021-2022 NFL season.

1. Arizona Cardinals

Talk about a team with a surprising about of talent and potential. Lead by Kliff Kingsbury, the Cardinals could make some noise in a competitive NFC West. Lead by speedy and efficient Kyler Murray and arguably the best wide receiver in the league in DeAndre Hopkins, this team’s firepower on both sides of the ball got significantly better. Let’s start with their additions.

Arizona’s team defense ranked 12th in the league a season ago, but this should change as they acquired J.J. Watt and Malcolm Butler. They also drafted Zaven Collins and brought back Chandler Jones as well. The team added to their rush defense significantly as they ranked 22nd in rushing yards per game (125.5). Adding that talent to a Cardinals roster that already consists of Markus Golden, the stud sophomore linebacker Isaiah Simmons, and the hard-hitting safety Budda Baker makes this team potentially a top ten defense in the league for the upcoming year.

For a team that ranked in the top half in yards allowed per game, passing yards per game, and points per game, they are poised to improve on those numbers. Although it will be a tough task to replace Patrick Peterson who left for Minnesota, they have the talent to still be a nightmare to deal with. Their offense also got significantly better as well.

Their already explosive offense that ranked sixth in yards per game (384.6) just got even more explosive. How? They added the long-time Cincinnati Bengal A.J. Green to assist DeAndre Hopkins and Christian Kirk in their receiving core. Arizona also signed James Conner from the Steelers to assist the reliable Chase Edmonds in the backfield.

Along with drafting the speedy Rondale Moore from Purdue in the draft, Arizona became incredibly dangerous in the passing game. Although they play in a division where they have to face the Los Angeles Rams and the Seattle Seahawks twice, I wouldn’t be surprised if Arizona found themselves in the playoffs and the NFC West had three teams in the playoffs in 2021. Keep an eye out for those birds in the desert.

Which non-playoff team from 2020 will make it in 2021? pic.twitter.com/kPNbemv5z0
— PFF (@PFF) June 12, 2021

2. Indianapolis Colts

Look. I get it. Carson Wentz and Quenton Nelson are both nursing a foot injury and their timetable to return is roughly 5-12 weeks. That doesn’t look good for the Colts at all. But there is some optimism regarding their recovery. Head coach Frank Reich explained that he thinks, “Carson and Q have done a good job in the rehab process with the right mentality getting the work done that they need to get done and I think it’s all been good.” Indianapolis could see their starters back by as early as October.

Besides the injuries, they have skilled enough offensive players to make them competitive in the AFC South. With a running back core consisting of the athletic Nyhiem Hines, Jonathan Taylor, and with Marlon Mack returning, there are many offensive packages that Riech can use with these catching backs to thwart defenses. Along with their receivers such as the savvy veteran T.Y. Hilton, the ever-improving Michael Pittman Jr., Parris Campbell, Zach Pascal, and the promising University of Texas rookie Tarik Black, this receiving core could cause problems for secondaries. I mean this offense was in the top ten in yards per game (378.1) and points per game (28.2) a year ago.

Lastly, the Colts still boast a top-five defense in the NFL. Lead by Darius Leonard, this defense has multiple impact players that can force consecutive three-and-outs. With this defensive roster such as DeForest Buckner, Malik Jefferson, and their freakishly athletic first-round pick Kwity Paye from the University of Michigan in the pass rush is a scary sight for opposing offensive linemen. Their secondary that consists of Xavier Rhodes, Kenny Moore II, Rock Ya-Sin, Julian Blackmon, T.J. Carrie, and Ibraheim Campbell should be solid enough to prevent big plays in the passing game as well. Keep in mind, the Colts were eighth in yards allowed per game (332.1), second in rushing yards allowed per game (90.5), and were tenth in points allowed per game (22.6).

The main concern with this team is Wentz and Nelson, and if their timetable to return is closer to five weeks than 12. But when this team is fully healthy, their potential is through the roof. I wouldn’t count them out just yet.

Carson Wentz is planning on resting and rehabbing his injured foot to see if he can avoid surgery, per @RapSheet

If all goes well he should be ready Week 1. pic.twitter.com/Lec8nbsbvJ
— PFF (@PFF) August 1, 2021

3. Cleveland Browns

If you told me that the Cleveland Browns would be a dark horse team four years ago, I would have personally checked you into a mental ward. The Browns from 2016 to 2018 only totaled 8 wins. However, after many coaching changes, they had their first winning season since 2007 finishing 11-5, ended the NFL’s longest playoff win drought that dates to the 2002-2003 season, and won their first playoff game since 1994 under head coach Kevin Stefanski. And they added to their depth significantly.

For starters, they had an incredible offseason as they added Jadeveon Clowney, safeties John Johnson III and Troy Hill, Malcolm Smith, Adrian Clayborn, and Takkarist McKinley to a team that ranked 21st in team defense. They also drafted linebacker Jeremiah Owusu-Koramoah who could have an immediate impact as a rookie. For a team that ranked in the bottom half in points allowed per game (26.2), yards allowed per game (358.4), and passing yards allowed per game (247.6), they adhered to their defensive needs.

On the offensive side of the ball, Cleveland already has one of, if not the best running back duo in the league with Nick Chubb and Kareem Hunt. Along with a strong running game, this team has a ridiculous amount of talent in the passing game that consists of Jarvis Landry, Donovan Peoples-Jones, Rashard Higgins, Austin Hooper, and David Njoku. By the way, star wideout Odell Beckham Jr. returns from an ACL injury as well.

Quarterback Baker Mayfield is also entering a contract year and looks to improve on his 2020 campaign, especially as the Browns ranked in the bottom half in yards per game (369.6) and passing yards per game (221.2). Along with a stout offensive line, I wouldn’t be surprised if Cleveland made it to the AFC championship game. The Dawg Pound should have a lot to be boastful about for this upcoming season with the amount of potential the Browns have as the Brownies shouldn’t be taken lightly at all.

Bears return to the playoffs in NFC North?

By: Ian Evans

The Chicago Bears had themselves quite an interesting 2020-2021 NFL season. They started the season 5-1 through the first six weeks. However, that changed in rather quickly as they immediately went on a six-game losing streak and quickly dropped to 5-7. The Bears would end up finishing the regular season at 8-8 and just barely clinching playoff birth as a wildcard.

Their one and playoff game last season was all too fitting for Chicago. There were dropped passes, missed opportunities, and costly penalties which ultimately ended their season as they lost to the New Orleans Saints 21-9 in the Wild Card round. Did I mention that they also lost on Nickelodeon? That can’t be fun.

Super Wild Card Weekend was FULLY Nick-a-fied.

Look back on the first ever @Nickelodeon NFL broadcast between the New Orleans Saints and Chicago Bears. pic.twitter.com/r1T2hAiSI7
— CBS Sports (@CBSSports) January 11, 2021

However, there are some bright spots for the Bears in 2021. They finally moved on from Mitch Trubisky and signed Andy Dalton to start at quarterback. Chicago fans had to be elated when they drafted sensational Ohio State quarterback Justin Fields with the 11th pick in the 2021 NFL Draft. And made some subtle moves during the offseason adding Damien Williams, the speedy Marquise Goodwin, extended their consistent kicker Cairo Santos, and adding Desmond Trufant to replace Kyle Fuller who they released this past March.

For Chicago, this upcoming season has some promise, and if the correct pieces fall in line they could find themselves in the playoffs in 2021. Although they have the third most difficult strength of schedule, there are some positives for Bears fans to look forward to this season, especially after having quite possibly the best draft in 2021. From aspects such as their division to their stout defense, these are the three reasons why the Chicago Bears could get back to the playoffs.

Chicago Bears have been phenomenal in 2021 IMO

1. Make the NFL Playoffs

2. Mitch Trubisky wins NVP

3. Draft Justin Fields

God’s plan. pic.twitter.com/8RqxYytYD1
— Matt Norlander (@MattNorlander) April 30, 2021

1. The Current State of the NFC North

It’s no secret that the Green Bay Packers and Aaron Rodgers have a relationship to repair. There is some speculation that the reigning NFL MVP Aaron Rodgers could end up leaving the Packers for a variety of reasons. But one of the main reasons why the Bears have had trouble winning the NFC North (besides 2018) is because of him. In his entire career, Aaron Rodgers is 22-5 against Chicago. For a team that’s trying to get back to the Super Bowl for the first time in 15 years, they would love to see him go.

If Rodgers does end his tenure in Green Bay, this opens up the door for the Bears immediately. Why? Because the rest of the division is rather weak. The Lions are rebuilding after trading long-time Detroit Lion Matthew Stafford to the Rams and now have Jared Goff as their quarterback of the future. The Lions are not in “win-now mode” and most likely won’t be a threat in the 2021 NFL season.

The only roadblock for the Bears if Rodgers does leave is the Minnesota Vikings. This team is led by Dalvin Cook, Adam Theilen, and their emerging star Justin Jefferson in an offense that ranked fourth in yards (6,292) and yards per game (393.3). However, there are still some questions surrounding Kirk Cousins and his ability to lead as the starting quarterback. They had a great draft and even added veteran cornerback Patrick Peterson to their secondary, but their defense did rank 29th in team defense last season. I think it’s safe to say their defense won’t have a major jump this upcoming season.

If everything falls in place with Rodgers leaving, the Vikings remaining inconsistent, and the Lions playing for draft picks, then the Chicago Bears should find themselves in the driver seat to win the division and in the playoffs for the second straight year.

5 NFL Teams Under the Most Pressure to Make the Playoffs in 2021 ?

– Arizona Cardinals
– Chicago Bears
– Denver Broncos
– Las Vegas Raiders
– New York Giants

(via B/R’s @MoeMoton) pic.twitter.com/i9zSqF5mV7
— B/R Gridiron (@brgridiron) June 6, 2021

2. A Potential Top-10 Defense (Or Better)

This defense deserves a lot of credit for how they have played in recent years. If it wasn’t for this defense the Bears would never have made it to the playoffs. Why? They were ranked in the top half of the league in yards allowed per game (344.9, ranked 11th), passing yards allowed per game (231.6, ranked 12th), rushing yards per game (113.4, ranked 15th), and points allowed per game (23.1, ranked 14th).

This defense is only getting better even without the presence of Kyle Fuller. Khalil Mack has an incredible supporting cast around him with, Roquan Smith and Akiem Hicks helping him on the defensive line. The secondary consists of Desmond Trufant, Eddie Jackson, and the recently signed Artie Burns. In the pass rush and pass defense, this team has the potential to wreak havoc and cause problems for opposing offenses.

This defensive roster has the potential to be in the top ten instead of just barely scraping the top 15. If this defense plays as good as they are on paper, they should be able to compete with anyone in the league.

Who has the best defense in the NFL? ? pic.twitter.com/MlZbsza7lV
— PFF (@PFF) May 21, 2021

3. Plenty of Young and Improving Offensive Talent

The young talent for the Chicago Bears, especially on the offensive side of the ball is impressive and they’re only getting better. The future could potentially look extremely bright with the offensive talent they have drafted and improved.

As I previously mentioned, the team drafted Justin Fields from Ohio State who could potentially be their quarterback of the future. If Andy Dalton fails to play well, Fields could not only see the field but also find a way to win the starting job. Having a former college sensation under center would raise the level of excitement in Chicago.

Besides Fields, there are other prospects that can make an immediate impact this year. Darnell Mooney out of Tulane University is a player with crisp route running and speed who is only improving. He broke the Bears’ receiving record for a rookie, and his expectations for his sophomore season are high. Cole Kmet has the potential to be a consistent tight end for them and Anthony Miller could be motivated to play well as has a lot to prove after it has been reported that he’s on the team’s “bubble.”

Then there are the two talented offensive tackles Chicago drafted in Tevin Jenkins from Oklahoma State and Larry Borom from the University of Missouri to help boost their pass protection (which they desperately needed). This gives Dalton the time to throw to the reliable hands of Allen Robinson and time for David Montgomery and Damien Williams to actually produce in the ground game. These young guys could be carrying this offense in 2021.

If the young talent can improve their game with consistent quarterback play from either Dalton or Fields and their running back and receiving core boost their level of play from last year, this offense has the potential to be sneaky good. Granted, it depends on a lot of moving pieces and other aspects, but the potential is there. The young talent in Chicago is another major reason the Bears make the playoffs in the upcoming 2021 NFL season.

Will Atkins Reunite with a Former Coach or Teammate?

by: Ian Evans (@ianacevans)

NFL free agency is in full swing with many star free agents signing with new teams. From subtle moves to major acquisitions, free agency has seen many young stars and veterans on the move. Surprisingly, however, there are still many big-name free agents who have yet to be signed to an NFL.

From names such as Morgan Moses, Steven Nelson, Russell Okung, Melvin Ingram, and the savvy veteran cornerback Richard Sherman, there are still plenty of top free agents who are still teamless. However, there is one free agent that isn’t mentioned as much around the league who could contribute effectively in the pass rush: Geno Atkins.

Atkins, 33, is one of the older free agents that hasn’t been signed. This is partly because he was placed on injured reserve last season after he tore his labrum and rotator cuff. Despite the injury, Akins throughout his 11-year career still has proven that he can be useful on the defensive end.

Despite missing the majority of the 2020-2021 season with the Cincinnati Bengals, Atkins numbers don’t live. In 2020, he recorded 47 combined tackles (tied career-best) and 29 assisted tackles (career-best). Just two years ago in 2019, he recorded 10 sacks (third career-best) and 24 solo tackles (fifth career-best). Even in his early 30s, it is safe to say that Atkins can still produce in the pass and rush defense.

However, he still has yet to call a team home. Although his age and injury are a factor, I would be thoroughly surprised if he remained unsigned going into the 2021-2022 NFL season. With this being said, here are some top fits for the veteran defensive tackle.

Checking in on a top free agent: Ex-#Bengals All-Pro and Pro Bowl DT Geno Atkins has a checkup with #Cowboys team doctor Dan Cooper in a few weeks and is expected to be cleared from a torn rotator cuff by July 1, source said. Multiple teams remain interested. He’ll be deliberate.
— Ian Rapoport (@RapSheet) June 4, 2021

Seattle Seahawks

The Seahawks had a subpar defense and was outstanding in the run game (fifth in rushing yards allowed per game) but struggled mightily when it came to pass defense (second-worst in passing yards allowed per game). Seattle needs more help defending the air attack than the ground game. So why is Geno Takins a top fit for the Seahawks?

At 33 years old, he’s close to retirement, meaning at this point in his career he’s most likely looking for a contender to join before he calls it on his career. Seattle is a perennial Super Bowl contender especially with Russell Wilson under center. They also could use a little more cushion on that defense front four.

Pairing Atkins with his old Cincinnati Bengals teammate Carlos Dunlap could be an incentive to join Seatle. Additionally, pairing him with Poona Ford, L.J. Collier, Al Woods, and Robert Nkemdiche could be lethal. Especially in the loaded NFC West, Seattle could use a boost on both sides of the ball defensively. Geno Atkins could help contribute in the ground came and help contribute to a menacing front four. Seattle would fit him like a glove.

Former #Bengals DL Geno Atkins has had talks with the #Seahawks #Jaguars and #Vikings for his next stop. #NFL #NFLRumors
— NFL Rumors (@nflrums) May 28, 2021

2. Minnesota Vikings

Minnesota needs help in a variety of areas, but their efforts should be focused more on the defense as opposing offenses had their way with this defense. The Vikings ranked 29th in team defense, as they allowed 134.4 rushing yards per game (ranked 27th in the league), 258.8 passing yards per game (25th in the league), and 29.7 points per game (29th in the league). It’s safe to say that the Vikings are in urgent need of defensive assistance. However, there is another reason why Atkins fits the Vikings mold.

Minnesota head coach Mike Zimmer was once the defensive coordinator for the Bengals, where he helped form a formidable defense. Throughout his tenure in Cincinnati, with Geno Atkins, Zimmer helped the Bengals reach the top ten in defensive rankings twice. In 2011 Zimmer’s defense ranked 7th in the entire league. The year after ranked 6th. With those numbers, reuniting the two could benefit both parties greatly.

Geno Atkins could help patch the holes that the Vikings need fixing in their run game. A pairing with Danielle Hunter would be lethal as well. He could also add veteran leadership for rookies Patrick Jones II, Janarius Robinson, and Jalen Twyman. Adding a presence like Atkins to a team that desperately needs assistance would benefit them in the NFC North. Don’t be surprised if Atkins lands in Minnesota.

Note: The Minnesota Vikings ranked 28th in sacks.

Why Minnesota Vikings NEED Geno Atkins! ???

?: https://t.co/MiqfqFnqDt pic.twitter.com/wUd2VBR7l0
— SKOR North (@SKORNorth) June 3, 2021

3. Carolina Panthers

The Panthers could benefit from veteran leadership as their front four is relatively young. Don’t get me wrong, it’s a solid young core that consists of three 23-year-olds Brian Burns, Yetur Gross-Matos, and Derrick Brown. But after losing veteran Kawann Short, this core needs to replace that veteran leadership to catapult them to another level defensively and Atkins could help in that regard.

The Panthers finished 5-11 (third in the NFC South) as they had a disappointing year overall. Both their offense and defense were in the middle of the pack rankings-wise. However, they failed to score consistently as they ranked 24th in points per game (21.9). But defensively they held their own from time to time.

What’s surprising about this Panthers defense is that they actually were tied for first in fumble recovery touchdowns led the league in fumble recoveries. For a team that 20th in rushing yards per game (121.0) that’s rather astonishing. With these numbers, it seems as if they need some more consistency when it comes to Carolina’s pass defense. Enter Geno Atkins.

Adding a veteran like Geno Atkins could allow for more production from their young guys as an offensive line’s focus would be on stopping the six-foot-one, 300-pound defensive tackle. Atkins could prove useful in the Panther’s 4-3 defensive scheme that Matt Rhule has employed as well. In a division that should prioritize getting to a quarterback like Tom Brady and stopping running backs like Christian McCaffrey, a veteran could help significantly for a defense that needs to take a leap. The Panthers would be a solid fit for the currently unsigned veteran.

Only one DT registered 550+ pressures from 2010-2019 (@PFF)

1.
Underrated division favorites around the NFL

By: Ian Evans (@ianacevans)

Every division has a favorite to win their respective division based on their offseason acquisitions and the talent they possess. For example, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers are the clear favorite to win the NFC South after they won the Super Bowl last February. The Buffalo Bills are favored to reclaim the crown of a fairly weak AFC East division. And the Indianapolis Colts are favored to win the AFC South after signing Carson Wentz from the Philadelphia Eagles.

But there are always teams that come out of the woodwork to surprise the rest of the division. For example, not too many experts had the Washington Football Team winning the NFC East before the start of last season. Nor did too many have the Browns one win away from taking the AFC North crown or the Dolphins only three games back from the Buffalo Bills in 2020.

However, anything is possible, especially in the NFL. There will always be a couple of teams that tend to surprise the league by exceeding expectations and proving the doubters wrong. The difficult part is predicting which teams these will be beforehand. With that being said, here are three dark horse teams that could potentially win their division in the 2021 NFL Season.

Updated Odds To Win #NFCWest Division:
Can J.J.

1. New York Giants

Most experts either have the Washington Football Team or the Dallas Cowboys winning this division as they both got better this offseason. For Washington, they added Ryan Fitzpatrick, Curtis Samuel, and Bobby McCain and also added to their stout defense with a solid selection of defensive draft picks including Jamin Davis (LB, Kentucky), Benjamin St-Juste (CB, Minnesota), Darrick Forrest, (S, Cincinnati), and Shaka Toney (DE, Penn State). And for Dallas, quarterback Dak Prescott returns to the starting lineup after suffering a gruesome leg injury last season against the New York Giants. They also added to their defense, which ranked 28th in team defense, by using eight of their eleven draft picks to take defensive players including standout college linebacker Micah Parsons.

However, the Giants could be a dark horse to steal this division. As the Cowboys get their franchise player back, so too do the New York Giants. Saquon Barkley should be set to return from tearing his ACL early in the 2020-2021 season. Let’s not forget that he is one of the most dynamic running backs in the league that is lethal in the run game, can catch out of the backfield, and is a nightmare in the open field. Besides the 2020 season, Barkley has rushed for over 1,000 yards twice in just three years, has rushed for 17 touchdowns, and averages 4.7 yards per rushing attempt over his career thus far.

Along with Barkley returning, New York’s acquisitions and draft picks could prove useful. For starters, they signed former Lions star wide receiver Kenny Golladay to a four-year, $72 million dollar deal. Especially after releasing Golden Tate, Golladay could provide a deep threat for the ever-improving Daniel Jones as he already has Evan Engram and Sterling Shepherd to assist in the passing game as well.

Furthermore, they also drafted Kadarius Toney, the star college wide receiver from Florida with the 20th overall pick in the 2021 NFL Draft. On the defensive side of the ball, the Giants signed cornerback Adoree Jackson and defensive tackle Danny Shelton to assist in their pass and rush defense which already ranked 9th in team defense. With everything New York has done this offseason, they have the potential to shock the NFC East.

P.S. They also have the 8th easiest schedule in 2021.

The Giants can win the NFC East this season — but there are plenty of big IFs | Politi https://t.co/jw0sptxYd8
— The Star-Ledger (@starledger) May 3, 2021

2. Miami Dolphins

The Bills are the clear favorite to win the AFC East and for good reason. They won 13 regular season games, beat the Colts in the wildcard, limited Lamar Jackson and the Ravens to three points in the divisional rounds, and made it to the AFC Championship game where they lost to the Kansas City Chiefs 38-24. Josh Allen is only getting better and will probably have an MVP award under his belt in the future while Stefon Diggs is one of the best route runners and pass catchers in the game. But there’s another team in that division that continues to turn heads.

Miami could be a sneaky team that could potentially steal the AFC East crown. It’s a long shot but it is definitely possible. Why? They signed the highly sought after wide receiver in Will Fuller V to complement DeVante Parker, added a highly respected safety in Jason McCourty to its already sound defense, and for fun decided to sign cornerback Justin Coleman to add to their secondary depth that already is composed of Byron Jones and Xavien Howard. Did I mention that they also signed running back Malcolm Brown to assist Myles Gaskin in the run game? That’s lethal.

Besides their offseason moves, Miami had a solid draft by selecting players that adhered to team needs. With the sixth overall pick, they selected the stud Alabama wide receiver and national champion Jaylen Waddle who has the potential to be the best wide receiver from this draft class. They also drafted linebacker Jaelan Phillips from the University of Miami 12 picks later who adds to their pass rush as he totaled eight sacks, 15.5 tackles for loss, and recorded his first career interception last year. For a defense that ranked 6th in total team defense, they got even better.

However, this pick for the Dolphins to be a dark horse depends on one thing: can Tua Tagovailoa produce offensively and avoid a sophomore slump. In his rookie season, he did total 1814 passing yards, 11 touchdowns, five interceptions, and a QBR of 52.5, which is solid, but he did struggle as he was replaced by Ryan Fitzpatrick frequently. He needs to show why he was selected 5th overall in the 2020 NFL Draft. If the Dolphins are clicking on all cylinders with their additions and improvements, Miami could contend with Buffalo for AFC East bragging rights.

P.S. The Dolphins have the 5th easiest schedule in 2021.

PFF predicts the AFC East standings. Of course, we haven't even had the draft yet. I was thinking that the Dolphins would repeat their 10 win season or possibly win an extra one. https://t.co/Fs9a3vKaFC pic.twitter.com/4N8b93GePI
— Phinfever (@phinfever) April 8, 2021

3. San Francisco 49ers

This is probably a head-scratcher to most and I completely understand that. Why would this team be a dark horse as they’re in the same division as the league’s best defense in the Los Angeles Rams who recently traded for Matthew Stafford, perennial MVP candidate Russell Wilson and the Seattle Seahawks, and the Arizona Cardinals who just signed defensive superstar J.J. Watt? Well, when they’re healthy, they’re easily a playoff team.

Although they only finished with six wins last year, let’s quickly recount who was out for the team with injuries for the 49ers last season: Solomon Thomas (ACL), Nick Bosa (ACL), Ezekiel Ansah (biceps), and Jalen Hurd (ACL). Not to mention that Jimmy Garopollo, Richard Sherman, Dee Ford, and George Kittle also battled injuries throughout the season as well. Keep in mind, when every single one of these guys was healthy they went to the Super Bowl two years ago.

They didn’t have the most stellar offseason regarding free agency signings as their most notable moves were resigning offensive tackle Trent Williams to a monster deal, signing Wayne Gallman, and trading up to secure the third overall pick in the 2021 NFL Draft. However, San Francisco had an outstanding draft. With that third overall pick, they drafted Trey Lance who had a stellar career playing just one full season at North Dakota State. They also drafted offensive lineman Aaron Banks from Notre Dame in the second round to help their pass protection and drafted an elusive Ohio State running back Trey Sermon from Ohio State

Like the Miami Dolphins, quarterback play would be one of the main reasons why they wouldn’t be a dark horse. There will most likely be some quarterback competition and controversy with Trey Lance and Jimmy Garoppolo. Garoppolo could also capitalize off a disappointing year last season as he only threw for just over 1,000 yards, only seven touchdowns, and five interceptions in the six games he played due to injury.

However, the main reason why they made it to the Super Bowl in 2020 wasn’t mainly because of their offense. Their defense when healthy is one of the most formidable in the league. If San Francisco can stay healthy and fine-tune their quarterback play, the 49ers have a shot at the division title. It’s a long shot with the division they’re in, but anything is possible.

Can James Conner Improve His Productivity?

By: Ian Evans

The 2021 NFL free agent class might be the most intriguing class in recent memory. There are many star veterans and young franchise players who could potentially be playing for a new team next year. Some notable veteran free agents such as Patrick Peterson, Von Miller, and A.J. Green, while some young franchise players like Dak Prescott, Allen Robinson II, and Brandon Scherff are set to hit free agency.

However, there are other players in this free agency class who are flying under the radar. One of those unrestricted free agents is Pittsburgh Steelers running back James Conner. His four-year, three-million-dollar deal that he signed at the beginning of his rookie year in 2017 has come to an end. After a rather disappointing year for Conner and the Steelers, the 25-year-old now finds himself in a rather interesting situation.

After being drafted in 2017 by the Steelers, Conner showed promise early. His best season came in 2018 as he rushed for 973 yards, 12 touchdowns, and averaged 74.8 yards per game. However, those stats decreased in the next couple of years. In the 2020-2021 NFL season, Conner rushed for 721 yards and six rushing touchdowns. With those stats, he ranked 22nd in rushing yards and 29th in rushing touchdowns.

The Steelers aren’t known for rushing attack as they were last in the league in rushing yards (1,351) and yards per game (84.4) and ranked 28th in rushing touchdowns with 12 in 2020. However, Conner could still be an asset to a team that needs a backup running back to add to their rushing attack.

The young running back has plenty to prove if he finds a new home. He does run with power, can catch out of the backfield, and can provide his services as a blocking back from time to time. But consistency is what he lacks and a chance of scenery could help in that regard. With that being said here are three potential landing spots for James Conner.

Steelers has released RB James Conner; he is now a free agent. pic.twitter.com/fbUgdLlNp5
— 2%Football (@2PFootballCamp) January 29, 2021

1. New York Jets

New York could benefit Conner greatly. The Jets were another team that struggled to rush the ball as they ranked 23rd in rushing, garnering 1,683 yards on the ground. They also ranked 24th in yards per carry with 4.1 yards per rush. It’s safe to say that the Jets could use some help on the ground.

The Jets need a resurgence in the ground game and James Conner could help tremendously. The Jets currently have the running back legend Frank Gore, Ty Johnson, and Josh Adams as their top three running backs on New York’s roster. Conner could not only lead the attack but also benefit from Gore acting as a mentor to him.

With plenty of cap space to utilize, the Jets are expected to be an aggressive team this offseason in free agency. Keep in mind they also have the second overall pick in the 2021 NFL Draft. If New York decides to take a quarterback with that pick, it would be wise to provide the young quarterback with offensive weapons. New York is should be a top destination option for James Conner.

https://twitter.com/ATBPGH/status/1236476066870562816?s=20

2. Las Vegas Raiders

No, he will not be starting over the franchise running back Josh Jacobs, but he could be extremely reliable as his backup. Las Vegas isn’t the best rushing team, but they were better than more than half the league in some rushing categories. The Raiders were in the 14th in rushing yards with 1,916 yards and were tied sixth in rushing touchdowns with 20.

Adding Conner to the rushing attack would not only bolster their numbers but would also make Las Vegas a tougher team to stop on the ground. Along with Josh Jacobs, the Raiders already have Devontae Booker and Theo Riddick on the roster as well. Las Vegas could sign Conner and release the 35-year-old Theo Riddick. That would make this team younger and tougher in the ground game.

Conner could also benefit from having a more mobile quarterback in Derek Carr as well. Ben Roethlisberger is not known for his running, so it was obvious that the only yards garnered on the ground would come through the Pittsburgh running backs. Being a team with a mobile quarterback alongside talented and young running backs could be beneficial for James Conner’s career. Las Vegas is a subtle landing spot for James Conner.

Signature Stat Spotlight: Running Backs

Elusive Rating – James Conner ranked 14th overall in 2019 in elusive rating (60.5) of all RBs with at least 100 carrieshttps://t.co/4Stl0GQl8c pic.twitter.com/2lafk2nBFr
— PFF PIT Steelers (@PFF_Steelers) February 20, 2020

3. Seattle Seahawks

This all depends on if free agent Chris Carson decides to leave Seattle, if the team can find a way to resign him, or if another team is willing to pay him more than the Seahawks. If Carson does decide to leave, James Conner would be a solid replacement who would work well alongside Carlos Hyde. The Seahawks also have a rotational running back system, which would be a great fit for a running back like him.

The Seahawks were 12th in total rushing yards (1,971) and 12th in rushing yards per game (123.2) but accumulated 15 rushing touchdowns for the whole season which ranked 20th in the league. For a playoff team, those numbers should be significantly better. If Russell Wilson isn’t either traded or willingly decides to leave Seattle, Conner could benefit by playing with another talented veteran quarterback.

Along with other lethal offensive weapons such as DK Metcalf and Tyler Lockett, he would benefit in a free-flowing and high-paced offense. However, the only thing barring a James Conner signing to Seattle is that they have a plethora of running backs on the roster. The running back depth chart currently consists of Chris Carson, Carlos Hyde, Alex Collins, DeeJay Dallas, Rashad Penny, and Travis Homer. If Seattle is serious about strengthening their rushing attack, Seattle could be another landing spot that would help Conner’s productivity.

A cheap but wildly uninspiring option for the Seahawks: James Conner

If he were to land there where does he slot in to your rankings for 2021?
— Justin (@Justin_14P) February 17, 2021

Is the Former Vikings Pro Bowl CB Elite?

By: Ivan Evans (Twitter: @ianacevans)

The 2021 free agency class is loaded with talent on both sides of the ball. From quarterbacks such as Dak Prescott, Matthew Stafford, and Cam Newton, to defensive studs such as Lavonte David, Leonard Williams and Bud Dupree, there are many star free agents that could be on a new team by the start of next season. However, there are many under-the-radar free agents, specifically cornerbacks, who could satisfy several teams’ needs in 2021.

Some cornerbacks hitting free agency include Desmond King II, William Jackson III, and Richard Sherman who all play on a high level perennially. However, there is one corner to keep a keen eye on, Xavier Rhodes. Rhodes was released by the Minnesota Vikings after the 2019 season and was signed by the Indianapolis Colts for the 2019-2020 regular season.

Xavier Rhodes showed that he can still play the cornerback position extremely well as he played a major role on one of the best defenses in the league. He finished the 2020 season with 40 solo tackles and only allowed 38 receptions on 75 targets. He also had two interceptions on the year, one of them being a pick-six. He had a solid season with Indianapolis and quite frankly, Rhodes might be the most important free agent for the Colts.

Rhodes will turn 31 this summer which could play a factor in the contract he receives. But if he continues to play at the level we saw him play at with the Colts this past season, he could be looking at a hefty contract in his future. With this being said, there are many teams with just enough cap space who could use his talents to enhance their pass defense. Here are five teams that could serve as landing spots for Xavier Rhodes.

Should the Colts bring back Xavier Rhodes next season? ? ? pic.twitter.com/7xWfwJucZI
— 1075 The Fan (@1075thefan) January 27, 2021

1. San Francisco 49ers

This all depends on if unrestricted free agent Richard Sherman decides to return back to San Francisco. And based on the rumors and speculation, it seems as if Sherman is looking for a new change of scenery. If this holds true, Rhodes would be the perfect replacement for the 49ers.

San Francisco’s defense only allowed 207.9 passing yards per game, which ranked 4th among defenses in the league. They only let up 314.4 points per game as well which ranked 5th in the entire NFL. However, they were 17th in points per game allowed as they let up 24.4 points per game. The 49ers have an outstanding defense, and in order to stay that consistent, they need the right replacement for Richard Sherman.

Pairing a talent like Xavier Rhodes with Jason Verrett would boost their pass defense significantly. For a team like San Francisco that has trouble keeping the offense out of the endzone, Rhodes could help in this department. He is adept at the corner position as he only allowed 51.3% of his passes thrown his way. Rhodes is skilled in both man and zone coverages and could be a reliable asset that the 49ers could use.

https://twitter.com/calvinkirton/status/1354623925154672646?s=20

2. Arizona Cardinals

Arizona allowed 226.4 yards per game which were good enough to be in the top ten among defenses in the 2020 regular season. They also only 314.4 per game which was 5th in the entire NFL as well. That is thanks to Patrick Peterson and Dre Kirkpatrick who were major contributors to the Cardinals’ Base 3-4 defense. So why is Arizona a landing spot for Rhodes? Both Patrick Peterson and Dre Kirkpatrick are unrestricted free agents this year.

On top of that, Larry Fitzgerald, Haason Reddick, and Kenyan Drake are also unrestricted free agents as well. This means it will be rather difficult to retain both Peterson, Kirkpatrick, and these other free agents as the Cardinals have roughly $24.8 million in cap space to reallocate this offseason. If one of those corners does decide that they want a change of scenery, Rhodes could land in Arizona as a viable replacement.

The Cardinals could sign Rhodes to a minimal one-year deal to test if he can still play on a high level as a cornerback in his early 30s. It is safe to say that we should anticipate the Cardinals deciding to resign Patrick Peterson and let Dre Kirkpatrick walk. If this happens, adding Rhodes to a defense that is only getting better would be a nightmare for opposing quarterbacks. Is it somewhat of a stretch that this happens? Yes. But it isn’t impossible so don’t be quick to rule it out.

Xavier Rhodes vs the Jets will always be a fun game to look back on.

3. Philadelphia Eagles

The Eagles as a whole struggled defensively as they allowed 125.8 rushing yards per game (ranks 23rd among defenses) and 237.4 passing yards per game (ranked 15th among defenses). It is safe to say that the Eagles could target both defensive linemen and defensive backs in this free agency class. With Nickell Robey-Coleman being a free agent who could walk, the Eagles have an abundance of options to pursue.

Rhodes should be a free agent that the Eagles go after. Pairing him with a secondary that consists of Darius Slay and Jalen Mills would enhance their pass defense significantly. In their 4-3 defense, Rhodes could provide assistance in defending the deep ball and zone coverage that the Eagles struggled with this past year.

The only problem is that Philadelphia has roughly $12 million in cap space which will be difficult to navigate around this offseason. They could still pursue Rhodes and sign him to a one-year veteran minimum contract, but his eyes are set on a larger contract the Eagles could be out of luck. Philadelphia is a team that needs talent like Xavier Rhodes and is a sleeper landing spot for the 30-year-old.

I know a lot of Colts attention tonight will be on Matthew Stafford. Rightfully so. But if Jonathan Gannon is heading to Philly, as was reported by @mlombardiNFL, something to think about is how that affects Colts defensive FAs.

I'm thinking about Xavier Rhodes.
— Jim Ayello (@jimayello) January 24, 2021

4. Green Bay Packers

The NFC Championship game between the Green Bay Packers and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers showed and exposed some flaws that the NFC North champions need to address. Besides Matt LaFleur’s controversial decision to kick the field goal when they were down only eight points, it was safe to say that cornerback Kevin King had an awful game. King allowed the first touchdown of the game to Mike Evans, allowed the Hail Mary touchdown pass from Tom Brady to Scotty Miller to end the first half, and drew the last pass interference penalty that sealed Green Bay’s fate.

The good news is King is a free agent in 2021 and could most likely test free agency if Green Bay won’t resign him. The Packers also have roughly $22 million in cap space which they could use to both help Aaron Rodgers in the offense by giving him another weapon to pass to as well bolster their defense as well. With that money, there should be no problem going after Rhodes.

Green Bay only allowed 221.2 passing yards per game which ranked seventh among the league’s defenses. And that number could decrease by adding a talent like Rhodes. Having Rhodes on one side Jaire Alexander on the other, and with a young and consistent talent like Darnell Savage as the primary safety that defense would be risky to throw against. The Packers also play Base 3-4 defense that the Colts play as well-meaning that Rhodes would fit in perfectly. If Green Bay wants to get serious about making defensive adjustments, they should aggressively pursue Rhodes.

Something to keep in mind with #Colts this offseason. Chris Ballard has never had the chance to stockpile compensatory picks.

If players like Xavier Rhodes, Malik Hooker, Marlon Mack, Anthony Walker, Justin Houston, Denico Autry walk Indy could add 3-4 picks in the 2022 draft.
— Locked On Colts Podcast (@LockedOnColts) January 14, 2021

5. Pittsburgh Steelers

This one is rather interesting. For a team that has a tremendous defense, ranked third in yards per game allowed, why would Rhodes land here? Simply put, cornerbacks Mike Hilton and Cameron Sutton are both free agents. And a cornerback pairing with Joe Haden and Xavier Rhodes along with Steven Nelson as a backup would make this pass defense nearly impossible to throw against.

The Steelers have a little over $21.5 million cap space to play with this offseason and could make a variety of moves and signings in this free-agent class. Their main focus should be on the run game as they averaged a league-worst 82.5 rushing yards per game. The other objective should be resigning Bud Dupree who is set to be a free agent as well. However, they could get greedy and decide to subtly go after Xavier Rhodes.

Rhodes fits the mold and aggressive that the Steelers are known for. And like the Colts and Packers, they also play an effective Base 3-4 defense which caters to Rhodes strengths as well. The Steelers don’t necessarily have to pursue him as improving their run game is their main priority. But if Hilton and Sutton are both allowed to walk and test free agency Xavier Rhodes could be a name that could potentially be mentioned with this team.

In the Colts secondary, cornerback Kenny Moore leads the team in interceptions with four and he’s tied for the lead with fellow cornerback Xavier Rhodes in passes defensed with 11.
Here are the best free agent targets for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers

By: Ian Evans

The Buccaneers have had an outstanding season thus far as they have made it to the NFC Championship game. Their success does come off the brilliant play of Tom Brady, the adaptability of head coach Bruce Arians and offensive coordinator Byron Leftwich, as well as a stout defense. The Bucs have also signed free agents to one-year deals who have also contributed to the teams’ success as well.

In the offseason, the Buccaneers signed Rob Gronkowski, Leonard Fournette, and LeSean McCoy to one-year deals. They also signed Antonio Brown to a one-year deal during Week 8 of the regular season. With many players’ deals ending after the season concludes, it can be said that the Tampa Bay Buccaneers have an extremely important offseason ahead of them.

First and foremost they have to prioritize resigning their unrestricted free agents Shaquill Barrett, Lavonte David, Rob Gronkowski, Steve McLendon, and Ndamukong Suh. Next, they have to decide which one-year free agents they are willing to let go and which ones are a critical asset to the teams’ future. And finally, Tampa Bay must adhere to their team’s needs on both sides of the ball.

One of the glaring weaknesses the Buccaneers bust attend to in the offseason is the offensive line as Tampa Bay is tied for fourth in sacks allowed with 48. On defense, the Buccaneers allowed 246.6 yards per game during the regular season which was 21st in the league, so it’s safe to say that they could look at free agents that can help their pass defense.

The Buccaneers are one of the most complete teams in the league, but this offseason poses many challenges for them. Can they retain their unrestricted free agents while going after highly coveted free agents? Which free agents help them stay as lethal as they are? With all of this being said, here are five free-agent targets for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

Dak leads the NFL free agent class of 2021 ?@SeifertESPN ranks the top 50 free agents here (ESPN+): https://t.co/JJ8OCztyXJ pic.twitter.com/1lXB42NvKx
— NFL on ESPN (@ESPNNFL) January 19, 2021

1. Trent Williams

Trent Williams did not play a single snap in 2019. However, in his return in 2020, he has solidified himself as one of the best offensive linemen in the league. In his first year with a new team, Willaims has subtly regained his All-Pro form in San Francisco. Williams is one of those offensive tackles who can work in multiple schemes, adapt to different offenses, and bolster an offensive line in the rushing and passing attack.

The Buccaneers need to bolster their offensive line who has allowed far too many sacks on the 43-year-old quarterback Tom Brady. Williams can help in that department as he has only allowed only four sacks (T-19th) and has been penalized ten times (4th). How good is Trent Williams on the offensive front? At one point in his career, he only allowed one sack in 867 blocking attempts. That’s efficiency at its finest.

Next year Trent Williams will be 33 years old, but he is one of those tackles who has shown that he is capable of being the next outstanding left tackle who can play in well into their 30s at a high level. If the Buccaneers are serious about protecting Tom Brady and their future quarterbacks, they should strongly consider signing Trent Williams. The only problem with targeting Williams is that he will most likely resign with San Francisco. However, if the Buccaneers can match his contract, don’t be surprised if he takes his talents to Florida.

Trent Williams, Kyle Juszczyk likeliest 49ers to return in free agency [via @NBCSAuthentic, @MaioccoNBCS] https://t.co/pxT3kebjDJ
— 49ers Webzone (@49erswebzone) January 15, 2021

2. Yannick Ngakoue

If Shaq Barrett or Ndamukong Suh does decide to find another team to continue his career with, Tampa Bay would need to consider signing another defensive lineman stud to take his place. Suh, 34, could surely be replaced with younger and more athletic talent upfront. Enter Yannick Ngakoue. Ngakoue, 25, is one of those special edge rushers who can generate reliable pressure on the quarterback.

Ngakoue has had a solid season in 2020 as he played for the Minnesota Vikings and was later traded to the Baltimore Ravens. He garnered 23 solo tackles, four forced fumbles, eight sacks, and 11 quarterback hits. He only seven tackles for loss, but those numbers will increase as his career advances. As an unrestricted free agent, he could benefit from playing with linebackers and defensive tackles who can take the attention off of him in the pass rush and rush defense.

Tampa Bay is a team that can provide Ngakoue with that luxury. Imagine a defense with William Gholston, Lavonte David, Jason Pierre-Paul, and Devin White taking attention off of Yannick Ngakoue. That’s a scary sight for opposing offensive lines and quarterbacks. If the Buccaneers want to add someone who fits their scheme and has an abundance of potential, they should target Ngakoue as a top target. This signing would make sense for both parties involved.

Ravens’ top unrestricted free agents on defense: LB Matthew Judon, LB Yannick Ngakoue, DE Derek Wolfe, LB Tyus Bowser, LB Pernell McPhee, DE/LB Jihad Ward, CB Tramon Williams and DT Justin Ellis https://t.co/m7AMOPNdvO
— Jamison Hensley (@jamisonhensley) January 18, 2021

3. Joe Thuney

If the Buccaneers can’t land a tackle like Trent Williams, why not go for a guard highly coveted guard who has played with Tom Brady? Joe Thuney has been a starter for the New England Patriots ever since he was drafted, and has yet to miss a game in his 5-year tenure. That’s not only extremely consistent but highly impressive.

He struggled early in his career but quickly found his footing as he now ranks in the 86th percentile in overall pass-blocking grade according to PFF. He has only allowed two sacks and was penalized three times in 2020. He has also played 980 snaps in 2020 which is 21st in the league. Thuney is a durable guard who can bolster an offensive line significantly.

Thuney has developed into one of the best guards in the NFL and will be a sought-after guard in free agency. And for a Tampa Bay team that had inconsistencies protecting Tom Brady this season, Joe Thuney could be a huge help in that regard. Reuniting him with his former teammate Tom Brady could benefit both parties and their respective futures.

Patriots G Joe Thuney:
* 74 starts through four seasons
* Started in 3 Super Bowls
* Over 5,000 snaps played (99%)
* Dependable, reliable, productive
* ZERO penalties in 2019
* 27 years old
* 2019 2nd team All-Pro

One of the best free agents available in March.
— Field Yates (@FieldYates) February 19, 2020

4. Anthony Harris

The Buccaneers have allowed far too many yards through the air this year and could look to bolster their pass defense. A part of that is due to Tampa Bay’s safeties Antoine Winfield Jr., (22) and Jordan Whitehead (23), who are both young and have less than 4 seasons under their belt. Both are only going to get better playing with a veteran defense but can also benefit from veteran leadership as well.

Anthony Harris has been one of the best safeties in football and steadily seen his playing time increase with the Minnesota Vikings. Harris’ ability to read route concepts as well as quarterbacks at the same time is remarkable as he is able to position himself to make plays.

In 2020, Harris put up a career-high in solo tackles (58), combined tackles (108), and tackles for loss (2). In his six-year career, Harris has nine interceptions, six of them coming in 2019. Although he had no interceptions in 2020, that is mainly due to his lockdown defense as his specialty is playing coverages instead of man defenses.

Harris could not only mentor Winfield Jr., and Whitehead, but he could also help a team that struggles in coverage defense. If Tampa Bay wants to prioritize limiting offenses in the passing game, Harris is a safety that should be discussed in the front office this offseason.

The @Vikings force another turnover!

Anthony Harris with the interception ? #Skol

?: #GBvsMIN on ESPN
?: NFL app // Yahoo Sports app
Watch free on mobile: https://t.co/amQPi4hFNM pic.twitter.com/83fwP87czR
— NFL (@NFL) December 24, 2019

5. William Jackson III

After getting selected in the first round of the 2016 draft, William Jackson III tore his pectoral for his rookie season even started. Ever since then, Cincinnati has seen his production increase year after year and rewarded him with more playing time year after year. In 2020, Jackson III has garnered 43 solo tackles, one interception, and has allowed 36 receptions. Jackson III had surrendered completions on just 51.4% of the passes thrown his way this year.

William Jackson III is nearing the end of his rookie deal with the Cincinnati Bengals and could be poised for a solid deal. The Bengals have already invested in Trae Waynes so Jackson III could be headed to a new squad that needs help in man coverage in 2021. Enter the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

Adding Jackson III to a cornerback group that consists of Carlton Davis, Sean Murphy-Bunting, and Jamel Dean could help enhance their man coverage. Jackson III could also come a little cheaper than most All-Pro safeties and cornerbacks so targeting him won’t be as big of a hassle as other unrestricted free agents. Jackson III could be an absolute steal of a signing if Tampa Bay is willing to target this young cornerback.

Could Trey Lance Be a Top 10 Pick?

By: Ian Evans (@ianacevans)

After playing one full season with North Dakota State, phenom quarterback Trey Lance is off to the 2021 NFL Draft. Lance put up outstanding numbers in 2019 as he threw for 2,786 yards, 28 touchdowns, and no interceptions.

He most likely would have followed up his 2020 season with similar numbers, however, North Dakota State postponed their season in August. But his lone season as Bison was convincing enough to catch the eyes of many NFL scouts and experts.

His accolades speak for themselves as he is a two-time FCS champion, first-team All-MVFC, won the WVFC Offensive Player of the year in 2019, and is a recipient of the Walter Payton and Jerry Rice awards. Trey Lance has proven that he can be a starting quarterback, or even as great as a franchise quarterback in NFL.

Starting the Trey Lance charting thread with a Russell Wilson-esque rainbow of a deep ball. pic.twitter.com/SEtXKKQ48v
— Derrik Klassen (@QBKlass) January 8, 2021

With other star college quarterbacks such as Trevor Lawrence, Justin Fields, Mac Jones, and Zach Wilson in the same draft class, there are many NFL teams outside of the Top 10 who could trade up in the draft to pick Trey Lance. He could be one of those guys who either gets picked in the top 15 or falls outside to the top 20.

There are many teams within the top 20 that could use a quarterback like Lance to help their offense in the future. However, there are some teams that are more ideal fits for the North Dakota State product than others. Here are the three best fits for Trey Lance.

1. Washington Football Team

The Washington Football Team has a very important offseason ahead of them. They have the 19th pick in the draft and have over $40 million in cap space to take advantage of.

Washington has a real shot at taking Lance ahead of Teams like the Saints, Rams, Steelers, but they also sit behind the Patriots, Lions, Broncos, and 49ers.

When April arrives, one of the main team needs for Washington besides a wide receiver is a quarterback. Why? The team released their former 15th pick in the 2019 NFL Draft, Dwayne Haskins, who did not live up to the teams’ expectations and Alex Smith is on the wrong side of 35.

They also have backup quarterback Kyle Allen who is still recovering from a dislocated ankle as well. And although Taylor Heinicke played a sensational Wild Card game against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, he is not a starting quarterback in the NFL.

Even in a loss, what a performance by Taylor Heinicke.

? 26/44 Comp/Att
? 352 Total Yds
? 2 Total TDs pic.twitter.com/hZBBt92UnA
— ESPN (@espn) January 10, 2021

Washington needs a dual-threat quarterback to make their offense with Antonio Gibson and Terry McLaurin even more dynamic. And Trey Lance can do that for Washington. Lance has an alluring skill set with above-average arm strength and passing accuracy.

In 2019, Lance threw for a completion percentage of 66.9% and finished with an overall QBR of 108.6. He will also bring consistency and incredible athleticism to NFL teams as well. Washington desperately needs that in a quarterback. Once he gets his opportunity, Washington could have a top 15 offense in the league, if they use their cap space correctly this offseason. The Washington Football Team is a perfect fit for Trey Lance.

2. Carolina Panthers

In last years’ draft, the Panthers prioritized defense as every single one of their picks was a defensive player. This means that in the 2021 NFL Draft the Panthers should prioritize and build their offense with the eighth in the draft.

The Panthers currently have Teddy Bridgewater, PJ Walker, and Will Grier as their quarterbacks. They also have a stable organization that can be a great place for many incoming rookies to find their footing. Although the Panthers finished 5-11, the Panthers have given head coach Matt Rhule–an aspect that not too many head coaches in the league have time.

The Panthers need a long-term plan offensively and Trey Lance seems like a sound fit for that plan. It seems likely that Zach Wilson is a Top-5 draft selection, as well. So, it would be very daunting for the Panthers to get a gift at eighth overall with Lance.

Zach Wilson off play-action this season:

?? 20 touchdowns (1st)
?? 0 interceptions
?? 154.0 passer rating (1st) pic.twitter.com/q10Fv4M8g1
— PFF College (@PFF_College) January 13, 2021

As previously mentioned, Lance is a dual-threat quarterback and is someone who could transition into a team that fits his similar style of play. Pair his athleticism with star running back Christian McCaffrey, an improving DJ Moore, a reliable Robby Anderson, and Curtis Samuel and you have yourself a lethal offensive arsenal.

With a strong running game behind him, receivers who have reliable hands and can make plays after the catch, as well as young and growing defense, Lance could fit Carolina’s plan for the future. If Zach Wilson is taken beforehand, Lance should be a prospect Carolina should highly consider.

3. Pittsburgh Steelers

If there was one glaring problem with the Steelers offense this season besides their running game, it was Ben Roethlisberger.

The 38-year-old veteran quarterback showed his age as he constantly had his passes batted down at the line of scrimmage and had a tendency to overthrow his wide receivers. Granted he threw for 33 touchdowns, but he also threw for 10 interceptions, four of which came in the Steelers’ Wild Card loss to the Browns.

In that Wild Card game alone, it was evident that Big Ben’s time in the NFL is quickly coming to an end. Roethlisberger has one more year left on his contract, meaning that Pittsburgh needs to prepare for the future. It is safe to say that Mason Rudolph isn’t the future for Pittsburgh so drafting a quarterback in the 2021 NFL Draft seems like a viable option.

The Steelers have the 24th pick in the draft and have many options surrounding this pick. They could pick a running back to help the worst running game in the league. They could help their defense by picking a young cornerback as Joe Haden, 32, is near retirement.

HUMBLE IN VICTORY…. HUMBLE IN DEFEAT. How I was raised
— Joe Haden (@joehaden23) January 14, 2021

The team could also trade into the Top 15 to pick and mentor their quarterback for the future. Is it unlikely? Yes. But is it possible? Absolutely. If they decide to pick the latter and trade up, they should consider taking Trey Lance if he’s available. Pairing his accuracy and arm strength with deep threats such as Chase Claypool, Diontae Johnson, and James Washington could be extremely dangerous for opposing defenses.

If Pittsburgh decides to extend free agent JuJu Smith-Schuster this offseason, that offense would be explosive if they do indeed decide to take Lance.

Of all of these three fits, the Steelers are the least likely fit as this scenario will probably not happen. Mason Rudolph and Devlin Hodges could be place holders for Pittsburgh in the 2021 season and could wait until 2022 to draft their quarterback of the future. But don’t be surprised if they act on their future plans as early as April.

Could the Packers trade up for a QB?

By: Ian Evans (Twitter: @ianacevans)

Week 17 is almost upon us, meaning that many playoff-hopeful teams are still jockeying for a spot in the playoff picture. Throughout the season we have seen franchise quarterbacks such as Patrick Mahomes, Deshaun Watson, and Josh Allen, light up opposing defenses.

All of these quarterbacks were drafted by teams who moved up from their original draft positions to draft them. Some quarterbacks like Kyler Murray, Sam Darnold, and Baker Mayfield were a top priority for the teams they were drafted by. However, trading up for a quarterback is a high risk-high reward. Trading up can either significantly help or stall a team’s progress.

In the 2017 NFL Draft, the Bears traded up to draft North Carolina quarterback Mitch Trubisky with the second overall pick. He hasn’t quite panned out as well as the Bears hoped as he was benched for Nick Foles earlier in the year. But who was picked after Trubisky? Deshaun Watson and Patrick Mahomes. In last year’s draft, we saw the Green Bay Packers trade up to the 26th pick in the 2020 NFL Draft to pick Utah State quarterback Jordan Love. This pick came as a surprise to many as the Packers needed more depth in the wide receiver position to help Aaron Rodgers.

With the 2020-2021 NFL regular season coming to an end, there are many teams who should probably consider trading up to draft a franchise quarterback. There are a plethora of college quarterbacks who can be game-changers and franchise for teams in desperate need of one. There are other star college quarterbacks besides Trevor Lawrence who could be worth trading up for. Ohio State’s Justin Fields, Florida’s Kyle Trask, BYU’s Zach Wilson, North Dakota State’s Trey Lance, and Alabama’s Mac Jones could be worth the risk. There are many teams who missed the playoffs that could use a change of scenery at quarterback to take them to the next level.

1. New England Patriots

If there is any team that should explore trading up for a quarterback its New England. It’s safe to say that the Cam Newton experiment didn’t work. In his first year, and potentially final year as a New England Patriot, Newton struggled severely.

So far he has thrown for a completion percentage of 65.4% which is 21st among quarterbacks. He has also thrown for only 2,415 yards (26th), 10 interceptions (13th), and has the sixth-worst QBR in the league at 45.1. He also has thrown 5 touchdowns, which is tied 37th with San Francisco 49ers quarterback C.J. Beathard and recently cut Washington Football Team quarterback Dwayne Haskins.

His touchdown percentage is also dead last in the NFL at 1.5%. That’s abysmal. Simply put, Cam Newton has had a rough year, and all signs point toward him being a backup quarterback in this league.

Cam Newton: I appreciated this whole opportunity. I don’t know what the future holds. pic.twitter.com/Y7JghaFCMA
— Mark Daniels (@ByMarkDaniels) December 31, 2020

Replacing Tom Brady is no easy feat, but the 2021 NFL Draft could offer an opportunity for the Patriots to trade up for proper replacement. As of right now, the Patriots have the 15th pick in the draft.

There are many teams within the top ten who could be looking to trade out of those spots. Teams such as the Giants, Broncos, Bengals, and Falcons could be looking to trade out of their respective spots if they don’t see a prospect worth trading for. Keep a close eye on the Patriots as draft talk and rumors heat up.

2. Washington Football Team

Many saw this season as a chance for Dwayne Haskins to make a leap and solidify himself as Washington’s quarterback of the future.

Haskins did the exact opposite as he was cut Monday afternoon by the teams for multiple reasons. From breaking COVID health and safety protocols to being benched multiple times throughout the year, Haskins had a year to forget. He was benched for Kyle Allen, Alex Smith, and practice-squad quarterback Taylor Heinicke in Week 16.

Haskins has the worst quarterback rating in the league at 30.7, threw only 5 touchdowns, and 7 interceptions. He only averaged 205.6 yards per game while having a completion percentage of 61.4% which is the fourth worst in the league.

Washington waived QB Dwayne Haskins.
— Adam Schefter (@AdamSchefter) December 28, 2020

Haskins is out, meaning that Washington is left with Alex Smith, Kyle Allen, and Taylor Heniecke. Alex Smith is still a solid starting quarterback, but the injuries have clearly taken a toll on him.

The 36-year old is nearing retirement as well. He also hasn’t done that much better than Haskins, throwing for 4 touchdowns, 7 interceptions, as well as having a QBR of 35.7. Kyle Allen is a decent backup quarterback at best and should not be starting for any NFL team. And Taylor Heinecke is merely a practice squad quarterback. With this being said, they are in need of a franchise quarterback.

However, Washington still has a chance to win out in the abysmal NFC East and make the playoffs. But no matter what outcome their season has, they should still draft up to take a quarterback.

A young quarterback with potential should be leading this young team lead by Chase Young, Terry McLaurin, and Antonio Gibson in the future. North Dakota State quarterback Trey Lance is a name that has been mentioned as a prospect that could slip outside the top 15. If Washington wants to prioritize getting a quarterback that can help bolster their offense, they could trade up and take a chance on a young college star instead of signing a free-agent quarterback.

3. Indianapolis Colts

This one could come as a surprise to many fans. It’s a long shot but it could happen. Why? Phillip Rivers could retire after this season and Jacoby Brissett is simply not a starting quarterback. If Rivers does decide to retire after his one-year deal, the Colts would be in desperate need for a quarterback.

Rivers has had a good year thus far. He has a completion percentage of 68.2% (eighth in the league), 4,005 yards (ninth in the league), 23 touchdowns (15th), and 10 interceptions (T-10th). Besides significant help from a top five defense in the league, Rivers has still provided the veteran leadership the Colts needed. The Colts are currently 10-5 sitting at the eighth seed in the AFC playoff picture. Whether they make the playoffs or not, they could be eying quarterbacks in the offseason.

https://twitter.com/ElentriosTakes/status/1343298415606824960?s=20

If it’s one thing the Colts haven’t had, it’s a mobile, dual-threat quarterback. As great as Peyton Manning and Phillip Rivers have been in their illustrious careers, they were never known as a quarterback that could beat you with their legs. With one of the best offensive lines in the league, as well as many weapons such as T.Y. Hilton, Jonathan Taylor, Nyheim Hines, and Michael Pittman Jr., a young dual-threat quarterback would make them less one-dimensional. The Colts could be a team that surprises the league once the draft comes.
