By: Rachel Marie – @rachmariesports

Draft day is almost upon us. Let’s take a look at some of the top prospects for the Detroit Lions based on their needs. Note that I have not included a quarterback because of the recent restructure of Jared Goff’s contract and my belief that they guy they want won’t be there at #7.

1. Jaylen Waddle WR, Alabama

There’s one trait that all of the wide receivers the Lions have targeted in free agency have in common (other than team friendly cap hits): speed. Here’s what their 40 times look like. Tyrell Williams- 4.42, Breshad Perriman- 4.29, Kalif Raymond- 4.34. Waddle is set to run his 40 at Alabama’s upcoming pro day, but has been quoted in the past as saying he thinks that he’ll run, “Definitely a high 4.2, low 4.3s. That’s normally where I’m around.” He’s rumored to have lost a race to fellow Alabama alumni, Henry Ruggs III in his sophomore year by just a step.

This pick would make complete sense for the Lions considering the change at quarterback. In recent years, previous regimes were able to surround Matthew Stafford with big, contested catch receivers. But, with Jared Goff at the helm now, this new leadership is going to adjust and give Goff speedy receivers that create separation. Enter Jaylen Waddle.

Waddle is not only quick on his feet, but he’s also a clean a precise route runner. According to Pro Football Network’s write up on Waddle he’s, “Fast off the line of scrimmage, immediately gets to top speed, and almost always gets a step or two on defenders in the initial 10 yards. Displays route discipline, easily makes the reception in stride, and adjusts to make the deep catch at full speed”.

Those are exactly the type of characteristics an old-school pocket quarterback the likes of Goff needs to succeed. And, exactly the type of receiver the Rams were not giving him in LA. To avoid those circumstances in Detroit, I like Waddle as an addition to this speedy wide receiver corp that will be able to create more than one deep threat and burn their defensive counter parts.

Bonus: he would also bring with him some pretty electric kick-return skills. And, with the loss of Jamal Agnew, that would just fill in yet another piece of the Lions current puzzle.

This Jaylen Waddle return is still insane

pic.twitter.com/45I0lsrhq3
— PFF College (@PFF_College) March 19, 2021

2. Micah Parsons LB, Penn State

I previously wrote about Parsons being one of the leading prospects for the Lions and I’m going to come full circle here. Linebacker was one of the weakest position groups on the roster in 2020 and is currently one of the position groups taking the largest hit in free agency (Christian Jones, Reggie Ragland, and Jarrad Davis have all already signed with other teams).

Parsons is perhaps the top defensive prospect in this year’s draft class. He is versatile and can play at virtually any linebacker spot which will be a plus for Aaron Glenn as he builds his ideal defense.

According to Chad Reuter of NFL.com, “Parsons plays with the toughness that head coach Dan Campbell promised his team would display during his initial press conference as the Lions’ leader. He also has the athleticism to become a playmaker whether lined up in the middle or on the outside, just like Tampa Bay starter Devin White”.

The praise from media around the league doesn’t stop there. Cynthia Frelund, also of NFL.com (you may be familiar with her mathematical models) stated that, “Parsons, who opted out in 2020, had the best marks in my college model in 2019 for run-game efficiency (measured by how many yards opponents gained on run plays while within 10 yards of Parsons). He also has strong blitz and pressure potential, as measured by how often he got past the defensive front when asked to blitz (he was in the top 10 percent among LBs of his type when blitzing).”

But, don’t take their word for it. Parson’s stats speak for themselves. In 2019, Parsons notched 109 total tackles, 5 sacks, 4 forced fumbles, and 1 fumble recovery. Think he’s ready to bite some knee caps?

Micah Parsons: Highest run defense grade by a LB in the 2021 Draft Class (92.4) pic.twitter.com/BRlP4f6UXL
— PFF College (@PFF_College) March 19, 2021

3. Penei Sewell OT, Oregon

Let’s be real: it’s unlikely that Sewell will make it to #7 in this draft considering other team’s needs for offensive line help. But, if he does, the Lions would be crazy not to give him a look. Sewell is arguably the best offensive tackle in this year’s class. Having locked in Taylor Decker via contract extension, Sewell could help build a stellar line for years to come in Detroit.

In 2019 Sewell started 13 of 14 possible games and did not allow a sack in a single one of those games. That season, he was the first true sophomore to win the Outland Trophy.

According to Pro Football Network’s draft analysis of Sewell he is an, “Incredibly athletic prospect with a large upside. Smooth, sets with a wide base, and bends his knees. Agile, moves well around the field, and easily adjusts to pass rushers. Keeps his feet moving, slides off the edge, and shows terrific lateral blocking range. Fundamentally sound, stays square, and turns defenders from the action. Flashes explosive hand punch. Gets out to the second level and easily redirects to hit a moving target. Athletic and hits multiple defenders on a single snap”.

It doesn’t hurt that Sewell is HUGE. He is a staggering 6’6″ and 325 pounds. Quite the formidable size on an offensive front.

He’s also an ideal scheme fit for the new style of offense that the Lions are putting together. According to The Draft Network, Sewell will fit best in a “downhill power run scheme”. Sounds a lot like what Detroit is putting together behind D’andre Swift and the newly signed Jamaal Williams, doesn’t it? We can cross our fingers and hope he falls down the draft board right?

Penei Sewell — @peneisewell58 — has no holes in his game with the ability to play pro-style football (get out in space, run block and pass block)

Sewell is absolutely a top 5 pick in this class pic.twitter.com/OQ29VNEr6r
— Mike Tannenbaum (@RealTannenbaum) March 7, 2021

Should The Lions Bring Adrian Peterson Back?

By: Rachel Marie – @rachmariesports

1. DE- Romeo Okwara

Okwara had a career season this year in Detroit notching 32 tackles, 10 sacks, and 3 forced fumbles. He was one of the only bright spots on an otherwise lackluster defensive front.

At just 25 years old, Okwara is at an age where many pass rushers in the league tend to hit their stride. He’s due for a payday, but in my opinion is one piece to the puzzle the Lions just can’t give up. With so many other free agents set to clear up cap space, if I’m the front office, I’m trying to make sure Okwara is putting pen to paper on an extension.

Romeo Okwara shows phenomenal technique on this play to get the strip-sack. Keep an eye on his left arm and notice how he gains leverage and creates space. Beautiful. pic.twitter.com/raFGkD5EPo
— Erik Schlitt (@erikschlitt) December 10, 2020

2. WR- Kenny Golladay

Despite many fans cries to extend Golladay, it now seems the star receiver’s future in Detroit is uncertain. On one hand, I could see that it would make sense to hold onto to Golladay to give Jared Goff a solid weapon and a better shot to show the league what he’s got.

On the other hand, the type of money Golladay seems to be looking for just doesn’t seem to fit the Lions current situation as far as their rebuild and cap space. It has been rumored that Golladay wants a top 10 wide receiver type contract.

Golladay only played 5 games in the 2020 season while struggling with an injury to his hip. Even though he still managed to score 2 touchdowns and average 16.9 yards per reception in those games, the nagging injury may be too big of a concern to overlook. It pains me to say this, but if KG can’t come down on his asking price, I’m letting him walk.

There are too many other wide receivers hitting free agency this off season and too deep a wide receiver class in the draft for me to think that the team needs to cough up $16mil/year plus.

3. WR- Marvin Jones Jr.

Jones Jr. proved to be Matthew Stafford’s go-to weapon in a season that saw Kenny Golladay miss a majority of the games. At 31 years old, Jones Jr. is still not showing signs of slowing down and is a fantastic contested catch wide receiver that can also create surprising separation at times.

Jones Jr. put up 978 yards and 9 touchdowns in the 2020 season. His highlight reel speaks for itself.

Alas, Jones Jr. has been quite open with the media about his desire to hit free agency and end up with a “contender”. Not much to argue there as this team most likely is not going to be that for some time. If he’d come back on a reasonable 1 year deal, I’d be happy to have him. But, in the interest of respecting his wishes, the Lions should let him go.

4. K- Matt Prater

Prater had an uncharacteristically down year in 2020. Many Lions fans gasped in shock as he missed field goals from what would seem to be reasonable distances. In fact, Prater finished the season with a 75% field goal percentage. That’s the lowest percentage on a season for Prater since 2008 in Denver where he posted 73.5%.

But, hear me out, Prater has still got the boot! The Lions (now former) special teams coordinator, Brayden Coombs said, “I can tell you guys that Matt Prater has not lost his fastball. He can still crush the ball. We’ve talked all year about how he’s had a little bit of inconsistencies with the field goals, but make no mistake about it, the guy still has a cannon for a leg so I’m not worried about that right now.”

And to be perfectly honest, I’m not either. You don’t just let a kicker like Prater walk. He is consistently one of the best in the league. I’m not going to let one down year scare me off. After all, Mason Crosby once missed 4 field goals and 1 extra point in 1 game versus the Lions at Ford Field. He recovered just fine…

Re-sign Prater!

The NFL's best long-distance field goal kicker is … Matt Prater.

From 50+:

Career: 54/70 (77.1%)
With DET: 32/42 (76.2%)

Both are best in the NFL during the span.
— Mike Clay (@MikeClayNFL) April 16, 2020

5. WR- Mohamed Sanu

Sanu did not see a crazy amount of playing time during the 2020 season, but the time that he did see had a mainly positive impact. In 7 games for the Lions Sanu tallied 16 receptions for 178 yards and 1 touchdown. Of those receptions, 12 went for first downs.

At 31 the question remains as to how much longer Sanu plans to play in the league. But, all things considered, and with a wide receiver corp that looks to be depleted by free agency this offseason, I’d re-sign Sanu to keep a veteran presence in the locker room.

He will most likely not demand a contract that will hit the Lions in the cap space where it hurts.

6. KR/PR/WR- Jamal Agnew

What a rollercoaster ride it has been for Agnew in Detroit. His play from season to season has certainly had its ups and downs.

Although the team’s attempt at transitioning Agnew to wide receiver this past season did not pan out well, his value truly lies in his punt-return and kick-return abilities. Agnew walked out of the 2020 season with a 12.7 yard punt return average, ranking 2nd in the league. He also averaged 28 yards on kick returns throughout the season, ranking in the top 5.

Agnew’s 1 punt return touchdown was a thing of beauty. There is plenty of value in a returner of his caliber. For a reasonable deal, and as a returner only, I’d give him a shot to keep going and re-sign him. Plus, it sure sounds like he wants to be here:

“Man, I love Michigan. I mean, this is really my first time away from home. You know, I went to college in my hometown, so it’s just like, this is my first time being away from home. Michigan always be home to me. It’s been my first time being on my own, so I’ll always call Michigan home. I would love to be here. But, you know, you never know. It’s a business. I only can control what I can control.”

#Lions finally get on the scoreboard. Jamal Agnew takes punt return to the house #TBvsDet pic.twitter.com/rWbUN0Z6Ic
— Talks With T-Time Podcast (@TalkWithTTimeP1) December 26, 2020

7. S- Duron Harmon

Harmon had an alright season in Detroit. Just alright. It’s hard to say much more than that as the whole defensive unit suffered a meltdown of epic proportions the further into the season they got.

Harmon finished the year with 54 tackles and 2 interceptions. Although it is intriguing to think about what he may offer as far as leadership through a rebuild, my gut says to let him walk and let Tracy Walker get back to some semblance of his 2019 self.

Additionally, at 30 years old, would Harmon even want to stick it out through a top to bottom rebuild?

8. LS- Don Muhlbach

I’m not even sure I remember Lions football with Don Muhlbach. I mean seriously, in 2004 I was in 8th grade. I was just beginning to really get into football games with my dad. The man is living legend!

Albeit, retirement is in store for Muhlbach certainly sooner rather than later, I’m letting him stick around for as long as he sees fit. He doesn’t command very much cap space and you’d just hate to see him go.

It also seems like he may not want to go just yet. According to Pride of Detroit, Muhlbach stated, “I’ve done it before. So maybe I could help with (the rebuild). I do feel like I want to get this thing going in the right direction before they get rid of me.”

Please do Don, please do.

Death. Taxes.

9. DE- Everson Griffen

I totally see why the Lions were eager to bite at Everson Griffen this season when they did. At that point, the Cowboys were having a fire sale, the Lions were desperately trying to fix their defense to make a playoff run, and Matt Patricia and Bob Quinn were eagerly vying to keep their jobs.

In 7 games in Detroit, Griffen posted 3.5 sacks and tied the franchise record for quarterback hits in a game at 5 against The Washington Football Team.

I love Griffen’s enthusiasm, but at 33, easily where most pass rushers’ careers begin to wind down, I’m willing to say thanks for your time here and best of luck.

10. WR- Danny Amendola

“The Patriot Way” is no longer THE way in Detroit. That most likely means that those players that were brought into specifically fit that mentality will be walking out the door this offseason too. Example: Amendola.

No one can deny that Amendola was productive in his time in Detroit, and at 32 and 33 years old at that. He notched two of his best seasons in the league while here with 678 yards in 2019 and 602 yards in 2020.

Nonetheless, I think Amendola will see fit to move on, and I’m A-OK with the Lions letting him in hopes of creating their own culture with their own guys.

11. RB- Adrian Peterson

Listen, All Day can still play. And yes, he’s definitely not what he used to be. But, he showed us this season that he still has enough gas left in the tank to make a few plays. He finished the 2020 season with 604 yards and 7 touchdowns.

D’andre Swift is easily the starting running back of the future here in Detroit, but Peterson’s veteran leadership cannot be understated. One of the best to ever do it is exactly the type of person you want in the locker room.

Peterson’s 1 year deal this past season was already seriously cap space friendly at just $1.05 million. My guess would be that he would come back for a similar contract, or less. If that’s the case, I’d re-sign him based on his value as an influence to the younger players alone (his ability to run it still doesn’t hurt either).

Peterson told Josina Anderson, “I’d still like to stay in Detroit. I believe we still have a good team. We just need a few more pieces to improve.”

With Matthew Stafford gone, what does Marvin Jones Jr.’s future look like?

By: Rachel Marie – @rachelmariesports

Matthew Stafford heads to Los Angeles, but what does the future have in store for one of his go-to wide receivers in Marvin Jones Jr.? The 30-year-old veteran receiver enters the 2021 offseason as an unrestricted free agent and many teams could greatly benefit from adding a reliable pass catcher like Jones.

Let’s talk the top 3 landing spots for Marvin Jones Jr.!

1. Los Angeles Rams

Let’s knock this one out first. How could it not make sense for Jones to follow Stafford over to the Rams? Cap space maybe, but still! The kind of chemistry this duo has found on the field is often irreplaceable. Except for one down season in 2018, we’ve gotten to watch the Stafford-Jones connection flourish and grow in Detroit.

Jones has posted both of his career-best seasons with Stafford at the helm. In 2017 Jones broke 1,000 yards, tallying 1,101 yards to be exact, and scored nine touchdowns. In 2020, Jones had the second-best season of his career putting up 978 yards and another nine touchdowns. Once again, Jones was easily Stafford’s favorite target.

Off the field, there are plenty of factors that make this a realistic landing spot for Jones as well. Consider the fact that he already owns a home in California. Add to that that Kelly Stafford and Jazmyn Jones, the wives of Matthew and Marvin, are besties. And top it all off with this detail: Jones has made it known via social media that he wants to follow Stafford there.

Marvin Jones Jr. has expressed interest in joining Matthew Stafford in L.A. with the Rams, @AdamSchefter reports.

Photo: AP pic.twitter.com/4TDRdndpdy
— Brad Galli (@BradGalli) February 7, 2021

With Josh Reynolds, who has spent the past six seasons with the Rams, hitting free agency, I wouldn’t be surprised if Jones would take a seriously team-friendly deal to join Stafford in Los Angeles and have a legitimate shot at a Super Bowl in the 2021-22 season.

2. Tennessee Titans

The Titans are most likely going to end up losing their breakout wide receiver, Corey Davis, to free agency due to their lack of cap space. They’re about $7.3 million over the cap and, “can’t afford to get into a bidding war with another suitor” per TitansWire.

Jones is a statistically comparable player AND a cap-friendly solution. At 31, and with a wide array of wide receivers hitting free agency this offseason, this could bring Jones’ perceived market value down just enough for the Titans to bite.

ESPN predicts Packers sign Corey Davis, Titans ink Marvin Jones in free agencyhttps://t.co/Z7UnMIUjP2
— The Titans Wire (@TheTitansWire) February 5, 2021

Bill Barnwell thinks he could “be signed by Tennessee to a two-year deal worth $13.5 million, or $6.75 million annually.”

This would place Jones with a veteran QB in Ryan Tannehill who has only continued to get better statistically speaking over the past two seasons. Tannehill threw 28 touchdowns and only five interceptions in 2020. His touchdown percentage, interception percentage, and quarterback rating all ranked Top 5 in the league. Jones could easily help him to maintain those numbers.

3. Miami Dolphins

According to DolphinsWire, “The Miami Dolphins’ objective this offseason is clear: get better weapons for quarterback Tua Tagovailoa.” Besides Devante Parker and Mike Gesicki, the Dolphins pass catchers were a mess in 2020.

But here’s the team’s predicament: “The Dolphins are committed to over $25M in cap commitments to the wide receiver position in 2021 ($25,500,001 to be exact). That figure is the 11th highest allocation of salary cap for the wide receiver position in the NFL.” That’s $25 million in cap commitments for one of the worst producing receiving cores in the league. So, bringing in more talent for the wide receiver room seems both a wild idea and yet extremely necessary, right?

Like I said previously, Jones could sign a very cap friendly deal. 31 years old and a veteran. Heavy wide receiver presence in free agency. Could it end up the perfect storm for the Fins to end up with the veteran on a reasonable deal?

Imagine a revitalized receiver duo. Parker opposite Jones sounds like a legitimate threat indeed. Even in a down year Parker still posted a respectable 63 receptions for 793 yards and four touchdowns.

CONNECTING THE DOTS
Detroit to Miami

Newly hired #Dolphins OC Godsey who was the QB coach in Detriot back in 17-18

Is a BIG fan & still has a great relationship with soon to be Free-Agent WR Marvin Jones JR (has interest in MIA)

Can Godsey help land @MarvinJonesJr to Miami? pic.twitter.com/ooV4Eel4Pw
— Fins Talk (@Fins_talk_) February 2, 2021

What Offensive Skill Players Should Dan Campbell Target in Free Agency?

By: Rachel Marie – @rachmariesports

With the entire new coaching staff nearly assembled and the front office bursting with enthusiasm, it’s time to look at free agent wide receivers and running backs that could help take the Detroit Lions to the next level in 2021.

1. Allen Robinson

I wrote about why the Lions should consider Robinson in a previous article for Pro Football Mania, but I feel that here and now is the right time to write about said consideration again. With Kenny Golladay, Marvin Jones Jr. and Danny Amendola all set to be free agents, the Lions will be seriously lacking in veteran receiver talent. This, of course, can only be addressed through free agency and Robinson tops most lists at the position.

In 2020, with Mitchell Trubisky at the helm, Robinson notched 120 receptions, 1,250 yards and six touchdowns. Now pair his abilities with those of Jared Goff, who I expect to come into Detroit with a chip on his shoulder and looking to get back to his 2018 numbers, and this could be a QB/WR duo that could set the league on fire.

Allen Robinson II has only 6 drops on 417 targets since joining the Chicago Bears in 2018 pic.twitter.com/Dok181BgvZ
— PFF (@PFF) February 2, 2021

Plus, the addition of veteran wide receiver talent will be necessary to ensure that Goff’s transition to Detroit is as successful as possible. I expect Lions general manager Brad Holmes to carefully select the pieces that he places around Goff, considering Holmes is credited for drafting Goff in 2016 and seeing his NFL potential. Rumor has it over at Detroit Sports Nation that Robinson may already be on Holmes’ list.

#Bears WR Allen Robinson is expected to be targeted by #Dolphins #Lions and #Colts #NFL pic.twitter.com/ntdQR3OHHr
— NFL Rumors (@nflrums) February 2, 2021

2. Corey Davis

Hailing from Western Michigan, Corey Davis is another intriguing free agent that may want to come “home” and the Lions should certainly be taking a look at making him the offer.

In the 2020 season, Davis caught 65 passes for a career-high 984 yards, averaging 15.1 yards per reception, and scored five touchdowns. At just 26, Davis is set to test the waters of free agency for the first time as he opted out of his 5th year option with the Tennessee Titans.

This move could end up a much more cap friendly deal for the Lions compared to Robinson. According to TitansWire, “As far as his market value goes, Spotrac estimates that Davis will receive a contract worth $39.4 million over four years, which works out to an annual average salary of $9.8 million”.

And then, maybe the Lions will be the team doing the burning in situations like the one below, instead of the other way around:

Corey Davis, ex-Western Michigan star, burns and jukes Detroit Lions for long TD https://t.co/xs56rIu4Jc
— Freep Sports (@freepsports) December 20, 2020

3. Kenyan Drake

Kenyan Drake is an intriguing prospect with a high ceiling. After being traded to the Arizona Cardinals in week 9 of the 2019 season, Drake led the Cardinals in rushing yards with 643 and rushing touchdowns with eight over the final eight games of the season.

In 2020, Drake totaled 239 carries for 955 yards and 10 touchdowns. He also finished the season with 25 receptions for 137 yards, an average of 5.7 yards per reception. That’s pretty impressive continued productivity for the 2016 third round pick from Alabama.

Kenyan Drake has 15 rushing TDs in his last 14 games, and 8 in 2020 tying his single-season career high.#ProBowlVote x @KDx32 pic.twitter.com/gRjkrwsU8V
— Arizona Cardinals (@AZCardinals) December 6, 2020

Now, picture the five year veteran alongside Lion’s young up-and-coming running back D’Andre Swift and that paints a mighty pretty picture for any backfield. Plus, a veteran presence in the locker room, if Detroit does not retain Adrian Peterson, is always an added bonus. From SEC to DET. Sounds good to me.

4. Mike Davis

With Christian McCaffrey’s injury leaving him out the majority of the 2020 season, Mike Davis was able to show us that he is a more than serviceable back. According to SI’s All Panthers site, “Davis didn’t just step up and get the job done, he had a career year. He finished the season with a career-high in carries (165), rushing yards (642), rushing touchdowns (6), receptions (59), receiving yards (373), and receiving touchdowns (2). Had he been “the guy” from start to finish, you’re probably talking about tacking on another 200 or so more rushing yards”.

Fun fact: Mike Davis of the Carolina Panthers actually led the NFL in attempts per broken tackle, breaking a tackle every 7.9 carries. https://t.co/CGtvOxETVR
— Asian Sports Man (@asiansportsman) January 9, 2021

Bringing in a back like Davis would not only be a nice pairing alongside D’Andre Swift, Detroit’s RB1, but it would end up working out perfectly for the Lions as far as cap space is concerned.

Davis is also familiar with, and comfortable with, splitting touches. He is quoted as saying, “Yeah I mean, that would be nice to have (being a starting RB somewhere) but I’ve been put in that situation before where that was supposed to be the case and it didn’t end up working out being that way. The grass isn’t always greener on the other side’.

That attitude and complementary play style could start brewing big things in Detroit in the backfield.

Will the Lions Draft a QB?

By: Rachel Marie Sports – @rachmariesports

With the Detroit Lions announcing hire upon hire upon hire this past week and a half, many are starting to get pretty excited to see what the new front office and coaching staff are going to do in the 2021 draft. Will they trade up for one of the class’ best quarterbacks? Will they sit tight at 7 and draft defense? Here are my top 3 choices keeping in mind a trade up, down, or anything in between is fully possible.

Toss up: Justin Fields/Zach Wilson

Over the past week I’ve come to realize that I can’t quite make up my mind when it comes to these 2 quarterback prospects. So, I’ll make my case for both.

Hailing from Ohio State, Justin Fields has been lauded as one of the top quarterbacks hitting the draft in 2021. With a trade up within reason, depending on what the Lions receive in compensation for a Matthew Stafford trade, it would not be unlikely to see the team make a move for the Big 10 star.

Many are already screaming that it would be the right move. According to The Big Lead, “Fields has the measurables. He has the intangibles. He has a history of being patient and overcoming challenges. He has experience carrying the weight of a program on his shoulders. He has learned to overcome disappointment and play through pain”.

In 22 games Fields put up 5,373 passing yards, 63 touchdowns, just 9 interceptions, and an additional 867 yards rushing with 15 rushing touchdowns. This type of play lead to his nomination for the Heisman Trophy in 2020.

With Anthony Lynn taking over at offensive coordinator for the Lions, this pick might just hit. Lynn has spent plenty of time with dual threat quarterbacks having coached Tyrod Taylor in Buffalo and more recently, Justin Herbert, in Los Angeles.

The main component that sets Fields apart from the next quarterback discussed, Zach Wilson, is his experience playing the top tier teams in the NCAA. Ohio State is easily taking on tougher competiton than that of Brigham Young.

Mock draft watch: Mel Kiper projects Justin Fields to the Lions https://t.co/b7TX8fnamC
— The Lions Wire (@thelionswire) January 26, 2021

Now the case for Zach Wilson. In his 3 seasons with the team at Brigham Young, Wilson notched 3,692 yards, 33 touchdowns vs. 3 interceptions, and an additional 10 touchdowns rushing. He finished his time in college with a 73.4% completion rate.

According to SI All Lions he has “…God-given arm talent that makes him stand out. His ability to throw the deep ball with high-level accuracy is uncanny, and he has all the makings of a special passer”. They even go on in the article to compare some of his completions to that of Patrick Mahomes. A gunslinger. Similar in ways to that of the quarterback that the team will lose, Matthew Stafford.

Will Wilson’s lack of ranked competition leave him a little too raw? With the right coaching staff, the likes of the one the Lions are currently putting together, I lean towards the answer here being no…well, at least, eventually!

Highest-graded deep passer (20+ yards) in the NFL Draft:

? Zach Wilson, BYUpic.twitter.com/3YwGwhcwp9
— PFF College (@PFF_College) January 25, 2021

2. Ja’Marr Chase

The wide receiver room in Detroit could look pretty empty depending on what happens with their 3 free agent wide receivers this offseason. Kenny Golladay, Marvin Jones Jr., and Danny Amendola are all set to hit the market. This has me looking towards one of/if not THE best wide receiver in the draft class, Ja’Marr of LSU.

Although Chase sat out the 2020 season due to Covid19 concerns, it wasn’t really necessary for him to prove anything to anyone after his INCREDIBLE 2019 showing in which he broke the SEC record for receiving yards. An explosive route runner, with equally as impressive body control.

In 2019 Chase finished the year with 84 receptions, 1,780 yards, and 20 touchdowns (which is 9th all time). Although he may not have the elite physicals we are so used to seeing in the league, his speed more than makes up for it. Fansided NFL Mocks notes that, “…Chase ran a 4.4 forty yard dash sometime this year. That number is impressive, but when you consider the fact that he ran a 4.66 forty yard dash in high school, you realize how incredible it truly is. His drastically improved forty-yard dash time is a testament to his work ethic”.

Picture this: the Lions use the cap space saved in trading Matthew Stafford to pay Kenny Golladay and then draft Ja’Marr Chase to play opposite him. One of the greatest contested catch receivers in the game across from one of the youngest and fastest. *full body chills*

Most TD receptions 20+ yards downfield since 2019:

? Ja'Marr Chase – 14

Chase didn't play this season. pic.twitter.com/DNdJjJOse8
— PFF College (@PFF_College) January 23, 2021

3. Micah Parsons

Probably the defensive prospect in this upcoming draft for the Lions is easily Micah Parsons. One of the glaring issues (of many) for the team’s defense was the slow and unruly play of the linebacker corp. Parsons would be an immediate upgrade.

Take it from LionsWire: “Parsons is big (6-3, 245) fast, (estimated to run in the 4.4-4.5 range), agile and while he can play at the MIKE, he has the range to shift all the way outside to the EDGE ”” think Jamie Collins like range, with more power”. That versatility will be paramount, as we’re not exactly sure what style of defense Aaron Glenn is going to put out onto the field.

Over 2 seasons Parsons put up 99 solo tackles, 6.5 sacks (5 of those coming in 2019), and 6 forced fumbles. But what makes that even more of an accomplishment is that Parsons was new to the role at linebacker, as he previously played defensive edge. Many claim that he could be a first round draft pick at that position as well. In his entire run at Penn State Parsons missed just 11 tackles on 188 attempts.

Character issues have been sited in recent news surrounding Parsons. No doubt many teams are following along closely to find out the validity of the recent claims. If the allegations turn out to be true, we will likely see him slip off of teams draft boards completely. Until we know more about how that plays out, per PFF:

?

Which Profiles Should Dan Campbell Seek?

By: Rachel Maries (Twitter: @rachmariesports)

The Detroit Lions are set to start the 2021 season with a new general manager, a new head coach, and hopefully a new winning culture. This means that plenty of offseason moves are on the horizon. So let’s take a look at 5 potential new faces that the team could pursue via free agency to kick off this “retool” with a bang!

Allen Robinson

Allen Robinson will test the waters of free agency in 2021. And, if I’m the Lions, I’m considering rowing out to pick him up…if the price is right.

In the middle of the 2020 season, it was rumored that Robinson wanted out of Chicago. He even changed his Twitter bio to read, “Detroit vs Everybody” (Robinson is a Detroit native). With the team not coming to terms on a contract extension for Kenny Golladay, could it be possible that Robinson would come “home” for a better price?

After all, the stats don’t lie, and the only wide receiver in the league with more contested catches since 2018 than Golladay, is Robinson. Both rank in the top 5 of PFF’s 2021 free-agent rankings. Robinson did not hesitate to share the tweet to let everyone know.

??? https://t.co/ARKZ4pNqrK
— Allen Robinson II (@AllenRobinson) January 20, 2021

Plus, throughout Robinson’s career, you have to admit the quarterback play surrounding him has been subpar at best. If the Lions hold onto Matthew Stafford, the Stafford-Robinson connection would, I’m sure, be a thing of beauty.

2. Lavonte David

We all know that this past season the Lions’ defense was bad. I mean, really bad. 32nd ranked bad. Worse than the 0-16 team bad. How can they start to fix the defensive mess? Let’s start with a crazy talented linebacker: Lavonte David.

If the Tampa Bay Buccaneers don’t offer David an extension, you can easily see how it would be wise for the Lions to give him a look. According to the Buccaneers website: “The numbers that Buccaneers ILB Lavonte David has accumulated through the first nine seasons of his NFL career are on par with some of the best linebackers of the Super Bowl era”.

The Buccaneers team website also tells us that in his almost nine seasons in the league David has put up 1,098 tackles, 12 interceptions, 52 passes defended, 22 forced fumbles, 16 fumble recoveries, 24 sacks, and 126 tackles for a loss.

He is in elite company with those stats and you can read more about his accolades here. It may not be likely that the Bucs let him retire elsewhere, but if they do, the Lions need to be ready to fire the cannons…

3. Leonard Williams

Williams is coming off of a HOT season in New York and could bring the interior pressure the Lions have so desperately needed. It may cost the team a pretty penny, but something’s gotta give with this defense’s struggles.

This past season, Williams notched 11.5 sacks AND 30 quarterback hits. It’s these numbers that landed Williams the number 3 spot on ESPN’s top free agents list. At just 26 years old, one could hope for many more seasons with premiere play. Something for the Lions to think about when assessing the cap hit versus desired results on the field.

1?? Shaquil Barrett
2?? Leonard Williams
3?? Carl Lawson

PFF ranks the top DL from the 2021 Free Agent class ?? https://t.co/vlIhci2E5E
— PFF (@PFF) January 14, 2021

4. Juju Smith-Schuster

It appears that Smith-Schuster’s time in Pittsburgh will come to an end before the start of the 2021 season. This could end up a timely coincidence for the Lions as their slot receiver, Danny Amendola, is set to hit free agency as well.

Amendola had become a nice security blanket for Matthew Stafford when he could not find much deep downfield. But, with Matt Patricia’s time now over in Detroit, it is highly unlikely we’ll see Amendola back in the Honolulu blue.

With Juju primarily lining up as a slot receiver as well, and at only 24 years old, there’s potential here to fill a need with a young veteran with a fan-pleasing personality. And hey, it might be nice for the fans in Detroit to be able to remember him for something other than the viral bicycle touchdown celebration at Ford Field in 2017.

VIDEO: JuJu Smith-Schuster locks up exercise bike following 97-yard TD catch ? https://t.co/mcsLlJRZ8A pic.twitter.com/J9YwREf6uo
— theScore (@theScore) October 30, 2017

5. Justin Simmons

I know this article has already harped plenty on the sordidness of this past year’s Lions defense, but did you see it?! Simmons is coming off of a top tier season in Denver and could certainly help the Lions secondary to learn a thing or two.

Over the 2020 season, Simmons accrued 5 interceptions, 9 passes defended, and 96 tackles. Duron Harmon, the Lions starting safety and defensive captain, only finished the season with 2 interceptions, 5 passes defended, and 76 tackles.

Another signing that would hit the Lions where it hurts, the wallet, but a significant upgrade indeed.

Free Agent Profile: Justin Simmons (FS)

Age: 26 H: 6'-2" W: 202 Spd: 4.61
Exp: 4 Years – 3rd Round (98) Pick 2016

Career Stats:
58 Games, 288 Tackles (Combined),
2 Sacks, 11 Int, 0 FF, 28 PDef

Solid and versatile playmaker, coming off two highly productive seasons.

The offseason is fast approaching, and while the Lions won’t have nearly enough money in the bank to make moves on all of these stars, I’m sure One Pride will be satisfied as long as the team makes a splash or two. Time to get serious and right this ship!

Splash offseason moves for each NFL squad

By: Rachel Maries (Twitter: @rachmariesports)

Arizona Cardinals

The Cardinals were an intriguing team this season. Felt like they were almost there, but not quite. While some position groups were strong (wide receiver), others left something to be desired (secondary).

The Cardinals need a veteran piece at safety. How about Anthony Harris? Having been franchise tagged this past season by the Vikings, he is set to hit free agency this offseason and could be just the piece a defense like the Cardinals is looking for.

Atlanta Falcons

The Falcons were practically in shambles this season. It seemed that, even with a lead, they perpetually found a way to lose the game. This led to their GM and Head Coach being fired.

While the team searches, one must wonder what the new regime will do. Maybe they’ll come out with a “bang” and get some of the money off of the books, dealing Matt Ryan, Julio Jones (and getting teams to help out with the dead cap hit), or both for draft capital. This would essentially put the team into full-on rebuild mode. But, would anyone really be that mad?

Buffalo Bills

The Buffalo Bills are a serious team to talk about this offseason as they finished their regular season 13-3 and won their division. With a roster full of some serious talent already, what could help this team stay relevant in the future?

How about signing their young, and quite talented star quarterback to a whopping contract extension? And I’m talking substantial enough to make us all say, “WOW”. The quarterback market has shown us the type of numbers we might be able to expect the Bills to throw his way.

Baltimore Ravens

The Ravens made a late-season push to secure a fifth seeded playoff spot, but certainly lacked depth at wide receiver that may have made their run a bit easier. With the 2021 draft class looking pretty deep at the position, it’s time for the Ravens to make their splash move in the first round.

Receivers the likes of Chris Olave from Ohio State, or Kadarius Toney from Florida have the potential to be on the board at Raven’s pick. There’s enough wide receiver talent in the draft to help guarantee they get their guy that can win all over the field.

Carolina Panthers

The Panthers had quite the wishy-washy season, showing bursts of promise, but then failing to finish out games. The good news for the Panthers is: it seems like Matt Rhule is driven and has the ability to take the team in the right direction.

The Panthers have the eighth overall pick in this year’s draft, and that spot has been good to them in the past (McCaffrey was selected eighth overall). The team has a shot at one of the top quarterbacks in the class at that spot, and to make some serious noise in the future, they could draft the best available to play under Teddy until his time to shine.

Cincinnati Bengals

The Bengals have a dangerously gifted young quarterback in Joe Burrow. Unfortunately, Burrow left the 2020 season with a gruesome knee injury. The big move the Bengals can make to try to be sure they have not only adequate protection for their leader but also a player with a promise to make a big name for himself in this league?

Draft Oregon’s left tackle, Penei Sewell. According to SportsNaut, Sewell allowed zero sacks in 926 blocking snaps in 2019 while protecting Justin Herbert’s blindside.

Cleveland Browns

The Browns have made it out of their playoff drought this season, but that certainly does not mean that there are not ways in the which the team could make a few attention-getting offseason moves. For starters, they could definitely bolster their linebacking corp, as it has proven to be one of the weaker spots on the team.

What about working out a trade with the potentially rebuilding Atlanta Falcons for the Foyesade Oluokun? Oluokun has demonstrated his abilities this season notching 3 sacks, 98 tackles, an interception, and 4 forced fumbles!

Chicago Bears

Over the 2020 season, it seemed that the likelihood of the organization coming to a contract extension agreement with Allen Robinson was getting slimmer and slimmer. So who could make a large enough impact to replace the big-name receiver if it doesn’t work out?

Corey Davis of the Tennessee Titans would make a lot of sense. Once underrated, the world has had a chance to see what Davis has got this past season while he averaged 15.1 yards per reception on a serious run-heavy offense…right in time for free agency. The Bears can’t overlook that, and we all know Trubisky needs reliable receivers.

Dallas Cowboys

The Dallas Cowboys have quite a few messes to clean up with offseason, but one might say that the top priority of all would be to work out a contract extension with Dak Prescott. Sure, the entire team had it’s struggles this year, but not coming to an agreement with Prescott could be a move the team would regret for years to come.

This gesture may not be surprising, but it could sure make a splash in Dallas when they can breathe a collective sigh of relief having it worked out.

Denver Broncos

The Broncos were going through a bit of an identity crisis in the 2020 season and will look to remedy that heading into 2021. This starts with a quarterback. Rumors swirl around who Denver might target.

Names have been thrown around including Detroit Lions QB Matthew Stafford. But, what if the team reached out to the reeling, and most likely dealing New York Jets to work out a trade for Sam Darnold instead? Darnold is young and has talent, but so far in his career has been lacking it around him.

Detroit Lions

What a year for this team that seems to be constantly looking for the right GM and Head Coach combo that can get it right. After relieving Matt Patricia and Bob Quinn of their duties following Thanksgiving Day, this team hopes to go onward and upward under the ownership of Sheila Ford Hamp.

Who they hire will make all the difference. How about the combo of a true leader, and player-friendly head coach in 49er’s defensive coordinator Robert Saleh, and a guy that checks all of the boxes, Ed Dodds for GM?

Green Bay Packers

While approaching the 2020 season’s trade deadline, many Packers fans and football fans alike expected the team to make a trade for a wide receiver to play opposite the astounding Davante Adams. This trade never came to fruition, and means that this is still a need for the team when looking towards the 2021 season.

Luckily for the Pack, this draft class is full of talent at wide receiver. Even later in the first round pick, they are almost guaranteed to grab someone that will suit their needs. The move may not be the splashiest, but their offense with two loaded weapons at wide receiver will be.

Houston Texans

I’m sure that most of the Texans fans are happy that the disaster that was Bill O’Brien is over in Houston. But, the terrible money situation he created is still at play.

What shocking move could the Texans make this offseason to get them back on track? Outside of hiring the right guy to run the team, what about dealing J.J. Watt? He may be one of the only bright spots left, but the Texans are in a serious cap crunch, and a J.J. trade could undoubtedly help ease the strain.

Indianapolis Colts

Ah, the Colts, a team in quarterback limbo since the retirement of Andrew Luck. We will likely not see Philip Rivers behind that monster Colts offensive line in 2021, so what could the Colts do to generate some faith from the fans?

Aside from attempting to draft one of the better quarterbacks in this year’s bunch, what if they took a shot at impending free agent Jameis Winston? Sure, he had turnover issues in Tampa, but so did Rivers in Los Angeles and that didn’t stop the Colts from giving it a go.

Kansas City Chiefs

It would be hard to top the splash move the Kansas City Chiefs made last season when they offered Pat Mahomes a MONSTER, record-breaking contract extension. But, there are still a few key additions needed to keep this powerhouse at the top of the pack.

For instance, an edge rusher. And Shaq Barrett is set to test the waters in free agency pending any offers from the Bucs. Now that signing could instill even more fear around the league in this already top tier Kansas City team.

Las Vegas Raiders

The Raiders did not have the season that fans wanted in their first year at their shiny new Death Star-Esque stadium in Las Vegas. Heading into 2021, there are a few bold moves that could help push the team over the edge, but my particular favorite is to cut Derek Carr and promote Marcus Mariota to QB1.

The Raiders have arguably one of the best young deep threat wide receivers in the league in Henry Ruggs III and Carr does not take big shots downfield nearly as often as he should. Mariota could not only increase the team’s big-play potential but can also scramble out of the pocket creating sizeable plays with his feet too. Not to mention this move would save the team in cap space.

Marcus Mariota seems to have made a good first impression on Las Vegas Raiders coach Jon Gruden.
Los Angeles Chargers

The Chargers shocked many in the NFL community when they released head coach Anthony Lynn. Many thought that injuries were the biggest thorn in the side of this team. Alas, the coaching search is on, and the Chargers would be making a bold move if they brought in the Buffalo Bills offensive coordinator, Brian Daboll, for the job. Sports Illustrated discusses the benefits of the hire based on his success with Josh Allen in more detail in the article.

Los Angeles Rams

The Rams are not in a good place when it comes to cap space looking towards the 2021 season. Although it will be hard for them to shake things up too much, they could still step onto the scene next year with a veteran, reliable backup quarterback option in case of Goff injury. Enter: Jacoby Brissett.

Jacksonville Jaguars

The Jaguars. The struggle. The start to the answer? Sorry that this seems pretty obvious, but its got to be drafting Trevor Lawrence with the first overall pick in the 2021 draft.

This team is more than a few pieces away from glory, but a young talent the likes of Lawrence is without a doubt the place to start. And stay strong Jags fans, because I’m 100% positive they won’t let you down if this is the move that you’re looking for.

Miami Dolphins

The Dolphins put up quite the fight this season and displayed a much improved defense after their front office overhaul. So, naturally, this coming season the Dolphins will need to switch focus to the offensive side of the ball. That means establishing an offensive identity and cutting out the quarterback rotation. To solidify this, the team needs to let Ryan Fitzpatrick go.

Yes, he came in and played well when necessary, but Tua is the future of the team, and Fitzpatrick has clearly stated he wants his own team too. The Dolphins have a ton of draft capital this year and could easily invest in a third or fourth round backup for Tagovailoa. Though it may not be the popular decision, it’s time to let the vet move on.

Minnesota Vikings

The Vikings will be entering the 2021 season with the eight worst cap situation in the league. This means they will have to make some difficult decisions to balance out the books. One shocking way to get the job done? Let Anthony Barr walk. Although extremely popular amongst fans, and even having taken a step back in recent years from his spectacular 2015 season, Barr will still command a decent chunk of cash.

The Vikings saw what Eric Wilson could do while filling in for Barr this season, and it didn’t look too shabby. According to Inside the Vikings: “Through eight weeks Wilson had three interceptions, 2.5 sacks, and two fumble recoveries, and he was second to Kendricks in tackles.” Read more here about how Inside the Vikings think the team can turn it back around and make it to the postseason:

New England Patriots

In Bill Belichick’s first season without Tom Brady, the team missed the playoffs for the first time since 2008. There are a lot of questions surrounding the team coming into the 2021 season, including who will be playing at quarterback.

A move that might surprise many around the league, but could make complete sense? Sign Dwayne Haskins. Belichick is notorious for taking in “troublesome” players (if that’s what you want to call Haskins after his release from The Washington Football team for being spotted at a strip club violating Covid protocol), and could undeniably help Haskins reach his full potential.

New Orleans Saints

Drew Brees suffered a nasty injury this season suffering 11 fractured ribs and a collapsed lung. Although he made a timely recovery, and has been able to play for the team in the postseason, the time may be looming that every Saints fan dreads: retirement for #9. Does this mean that we can anticipate seeing Taysom Hill behind center in New Orleans?

Although this is likely the case, the Saints could still attract attention by taking a quarterback in the 2021 draft. Hill is impressive in that he has taken at least 10 snaps at each offensive skill position this year, but the Saints should plan for the scenario in which he doesn’t pan out as a permanent starter.

New York Giants

The Giants were devastated at the end of the 2020 season when the Philadelphia Eagles seemingly tanked their last game of the season and the Giants were eliminated from the post season because of it. Still, most of the blame lies on the Giants themselves, as they did not stand out from the rest of the pack in the lowly NFC East and finished the season at just 6-10.

One way to get noticed and get serious going into 2021? Get rid of Jason Garrett. One season is more than enough time to see that Garrett’s play calling does match Daniel Jones’ skill set, and that Garrett was not able adjust accordingly.

Philadelphia Eagles

While in the process of writing this article, the Philadelphia Eagles did it. They made the move that would cause the league to be set ablaze with talk and speculation. They relieved head coach Doug Pederson of his duties following what looked like his decision to throw their season finale to The Washington Football Team.

This felt like a bombshell to many considering this decision came down just two seasons after the Eagles’ first EVER Super Bowl win.

Pittsburgh Steelers

Big Ben is undoubtedly heading towards (if not already there) the end of this career in football. This leaves question marks surrounding what the Steelers will do to replace him. My thoughts? Go big or go home going after Carson Wentz.

The cap situation wouldn’t be easy, but Wentz is due for a change of scenery, and is projected by many to thrive outside of Philadelphia’s offensive scheme and lack of playmakers.

San Francisco 49ers

The 49ers did not live up to the hype after their appearance in last year’s Super Bowl. Granted, the team was ravaged by injuries right off the bat. That means that there is still hope to turn things around next season, but it may take a few impactful moves to get there.

One of which would technically just be to not make a move at all and let veteran cornerback Richard Sherman walk. Although a fan favorite, Sherman’s latest injury and age makes extending him too risky.

Seattle Seahawks

The Seahawks had a lot things going for them this season. Pressure off of the edge was not one of them. With the cap situation being of concern heading into 2021, it might be hard for the Seahawks to make any terribly splashy signings.

However, injuries might help them secure a player for less that could rebound nicely and make a significant impact on an already stacked roster. Think Bud Dupree or Melvin Ingram, or potentially Everson Griffen whose market value may have decreased after being moved around multiple times throughout the year.

Tampa Bay Buccaneers

The Buccaneers are back in the playoffs under the leadership of the G.O.A.T. himself, Tom Brady. They look pretty sturdy on the defensive side of the ball as well. But that will change heading into the 2021 season and beyond as many veteran names are heading towards either retirement or free agency.

The key for Tampa Bay- make a statement while getting younger defensively. Michigan’s Aidan Hutchinson could help do just that. According to FanSided, “Hutchinson is a very active defensive lineman with a huge frame…As a sophomore in 2019, he had 68 tackles (34 solo), 4.5 sacks, 2 forced fumbles, and six passes defended”.

He suffered an injury in his junior year that may help him fall to Tampa Bay’s pick. Surely Brady would welcome the fellow Wolverine to replace Ndamukong Suh who is heading to free agency.

Tennessee Titans

The Titans experienced monster success on offense under Tannehill and the league’s premiere rusher Derrick (King) Henry. However, Vrabel’s defense proved to be one of the worst in the league.

The main culprit for the defense’s failure? Not having an actual defensive coordinator. According to the Tennessean, “Players all season long bemoaned a lack of communication, a lack of execution…You know, a lack of coordination.”

If the Titans want to have a chance to stay in the upper echelons of the league, they need to do the simple, yet necessary, and put a name on that defensive coordinator title. If they want to get the league talking, maybe Vrabel will bite the bullet on his self proclaimed “defensive mindedness” and hire from the outside. Now that would get ’em talking.

The Washington Football Team

Although The Washington Football Team’s Alex Smith will undoubtedly win Comeback Player of the Year (deservedly so!), it is time for the team to plan for their future in a younger starter with less injury risk and history.

They can try to trade for one, search through free agency, or bank on the draft. But here’s a wild idea: why not propose a trade for Gardner Minshew? The Jaguars are set to pick Trevor Lawrence with the 2021 first overall pick, and that means Minshew’s days as a starter are all but a thing of the past.

A trade for Minshew would leave The Washington Football team with a young quarterback with untapped potential who hasn’t had the most talent around him, and the Jaguars with potentially even more draft capital than their 11 picks.
