Not every NFL coach under pressure is one bad loss away from being fired. Some are trying to save their job. Some are trying to prove a new staff can handle expectations right away. Others have a quarterback, roster, or fan base that needs to see results.

That is why this list is not just a firing watch. It is a pressure ranking. The PFM Coaching Direction rankings look at the full coaching setup: head coach resume, current staff performance, coordinator stability, player development, culture, and game management.

With training camp approaching, these are the NFL coaching situations that feel the most important entering the 2026 season.

How PFM Ranked the 2026 NFL Coaching Pressure Index

Pressure is not the same thing for every coach. A second-year coach with a bottom-tier grade is in a different spot than a first-year coach taking over a messy roster. A coach with a franchise quarterback has a different standard than one still trying to build the offense.

For this ranking, PFM looked at several factors together instead of treating every coach like they are facing the same job-security question.

Pressure Factor

Why It Matters

PFM Coaching Direction grade

Shows how much trust the current staff has earned.

League-wide coaching rank

Adds context against the other 31 coaching situations.

Tenure and status

Returning coaches and new hires face different kinds of pressure.

Roster expectations

A talented roster raises the standard fast.

Quarterback situation

QB uncertainty can change how quickly a staff gets judged.

Division and fan pressure

Some markets leave less room for patience.

The goal is simple: identify which NFL coaches enter camp with the most to prove.

2026 NFL Hot Seat Rankings

  No. 1: Dave Canales,

    Carolina Panthers

PFM Coaching Direction: 70.8

PFM Coaching Rank: No. 32

Pressure type: Job-security pressure

Carolina has the lowest Coaching Direction grade in the PFM system, and that makes Canales the clearest choice for the top spot. This is no longer just about installing a program or asking for patience. The Panthers need the staff’s weekly fundamentals and player development to show up from camp into the regular season.

The pressure is not just about wins and losses. It is about whether Carolina looks more organized, more competitive, and more stable than it has in recent years. A young team can still be rebuilding while showing signs of improvement.

What changes the story: Carolina needs a clearer offensive identity, better week-to-week competitiveness, and signs that the staff is helping the roster grow instead of just surviving another season.

PFM read: The grade says the staff still has a lot of work to do to earn the fans’ trust moving forward.

  No. 2: Aaron Glenn,

    New York Jets

PFM Coaching Direction: 72.8

PFM Coaching Rank: No. 26

Pressure type: Rebound pressure

New York does not need another year that feels chaotic by October. The pressure on Glenn is about changing the feel of the entire operation. New York has had enough talent in recent seasons to be more competitive than its results have shown, and that puts immediate pressure on the coaching staff. For instance, the Jets failed to record a single interception last season. For a defensive coach, that is hard to ignore.

For Glenn, the first test is not whether the Jets look perfect. It is whether they look more disciplined, more connected, and less trapped in the same cycle. The defense must set the tone this season and show it can be the identity of this team.

What changes the story: The Jets need to look like a team with solid offensive improvement, fewer self-inflicted mistakes, and a defense that can turn the ball over.

PFM read: Glenn is not being judged like a long-tenured coach, but the Jets’ history makes patience harder to sell.

  No. 3: Zac Taylor,

    Cincinnati Bengals

PFM Coaching Direction: 73.8

PFM Coaching Rank: No. 21

Pressure type: Expectations pressure

Taylor is the biggest name on this list because Cincinnati has the kind of quarterback situation that coaches crave. When a team has a real championship window, the coaching grade cannot sit in the prove-it range forever.

The Bengals likely need a deep run for the temperature around Taylor to cool. That makes his pressure different from the coaches above him. It is less about proving basic competence and more about proving Cincinnati can maximize the window it has.

What changes the story: Cincinnati needs to show big defensive improvements, protect its quarterback better, and avoid another season where talent feels ahead of results.

PFM read: The Bengals have enough offensive upside to carry the team. The coaching staff has to turn that into a cleaner, more complete contender.

  No. 4: Brian Schottenheimer,

    Dallas Cowboys

PFM Coaching Direction: 73.7

PFM Coaching Rank: No. 22

Pressure type: Dallas pressure

The Dallas pressure index is on a different level. The Cowboys are rarely treated like a patient development story, and Schottenheimer does not get the benefit of the doubt here. Every uneven offensive stretch, every clock-management issue, and every big-game miss will get magnified.

That does not mean Schottenheimer’s hot seat is on fire before camp even starts. It means the runway is shorter than it would be in most places. Dallas has enough talent, brand heat, and expectation that the coaching staff has to show quickly that the team has a clear identity.

What changes the story: Dallas needs big defensive improvements, better late-game management, and a regular season that does not feel like another setup for January frustration.

PFM read: The grade puts Dallas in the prove-it range, and the pressure from the front office will intensify if early results do not look good.

  No. 5: Kellen Moore,

    New Orleans Saints

PFM Coaching Direction: 72.0

PFM Coaching Rank: No. 29

Pressure type: Identity pressure

Moore’s pressure is about leadership and direction. New Orleans needs to show that the offense can be trusted long term. Fan confidence is down after a rocky first season. A bottom-five coaching grade does not mean the decision is already made. It means the staff has work to do before people buy in.

The Saints have spent too much time feeling stuck between eras. Moore can change that if the offense looks modern, organized, and built around the players New Orleans actually has. Tyler Shough gives the Saints something to develop, and Jordyn Tyson gives the offense a young target worth watching. Now Moore has to turn that into a productive, more dangerous offense instead of another year of stalled drives.

What changes the story: New Orleans needs a clear offensive identity, better development from young players, and enough early-season progress to prove the staff is moving the team forward.

PFM read: Moore needs to show early improvement next season. If the Saints start out flat, the second-year coach will be under intense pressure.

Other NFL Coaching Situations With Pressure

Some coaches do not belong in a true hot-seat conversation, but they still enter 2026 with plenty to prove. This section focuses on coaching situations that are right on the edge of our hot seat rankings. If any of these head coaches start slowly, the pressure will be on.

Coach

Team

Pressure Type

Joe Brady

Buffalo Bills

Win-now offensive pressure

Jesse Minter

Baltimore Ravens

Contender replacement pressure

Mike LaFleur

Arizona Cardinals

Rebuild direction pressure

Dan Quinn

Washington Commanders

Defensive identity pressure

Todd Monken

Cleveland Browns

Offensive identity pressure

The difference matters. A coach can be under pressure without being one bad month away from losing the job. For several of these teams, the real question is whether the staff can create sustainable results before the season starts slipping away.

Which NFL Coaches Have the Safest Seats?

The other side of the pressure ranking is the group of coaches who enter 2026 with the most fan trust. These coaches have either earned it through championships, strong roster development, high-level culture, or consistent team identity.

PFM Rank

Coach

Team

No. 1

Andy Reid

Kansas City Chiefs

No. 2

Mike Macdonald

Seattle Seahawks

No. 3

Sean McVay

Los Angeles Rams

No. 4

Dan Campbell

Detroit Lions

No. 5

Jim Harbaugh

Los Angeles Chargers

The difference between the top and bottom of the coaching table is not just job security. It is trust, stability, and how much belief the current staff has already earned.

Final Takeaway: NFL Coaching Pressure Is Not One-Size-Fits-All

The mistake is treating every coach under pressure the same way. Dave Canales and Zac Taylor are not facing the same kind of pressure. Neither are Aaron Glenn and Kellen Moore. Each situation is unique and multi-layered. For Glenn the defense must create takeaways early and often. For Moore the offense has to take the next step forward.

That is what makes the 2026 coaching picture interesting. Some teams need wins. Some need identity. Some need development. Some just need proof that the staff is not wasting the roster in front of it.

PFM’s Coaching Direction grade helps separate those situations. It does not predict who gets fired first. It shows which coaching staffs enter the season with the most to prove.

The strongest NFL franchises combine a dependable quarterback
situation with enough roster talent to win in different ways.
The latest PFM Power Map reveals which teams have both, which
quarterbacks are covering too many holes and which talented
rosters are still waiting for the position to catch up.

The reigning champs own the strongest quarterback-and-roster
combination on the current map. Sam Darnold gives the
offense a dependable quarterback who can manage a game, while the roster does not need him
to carry every game by himself.

Jaxon Smith-Njigba gives Seattle a clear No. 1 weapon.
Devon Witherspoon, Leonard Williams and the defense give
Mike Macdonald one of the best defenses in the league. The run game
and offensive line still matter, but the Seahawks have
fewer major holes than almost anyone else on the chart.

Seattle sits above the 80.0 benchmark in QB Stability and
well above the league midpoint in Roster Strength. The
Seahawks have a strong enough quarterback situation and
roster to support a playoff run.

Pittsburgh has enough around the quarterback to make things
interesting. T.J. Watt and the pass rush give the defense
a real identity, while newly acquired Michael Pittman Jr. strengthens a
receiving group that needed another dependable target.

The question is how much Aaron Rodgers has left and whether
he can stay healthy through a full season. The Steelers
upgraded their short-term passing options, but the entire
offense still depends on an older quarterback with limited mobility.

Pittsburgh clears the roster midpoint, but QB Stability
remains below the 80.0 benchmark. The Steelers have a roster
that can compete. The quarterback situation still decides
                    how far they can go.

Jayden Daniels gives Washington the kind of quarterback
advantage that can change an entire season. His mobility,
deep-ball ability and connection with Terry McLaurin make
the Commanders dangerous whenever the game turns into a
                    shootout.

The roster still puts too much pressure on him though. Washington added several defensive additions in the offseason. They need to deliver as Daniels
needs a more dependable defense. Keeping Daniels healthy
becomes even more important when the team cannot control a
                    game defensively.

Washington clears the QB Stability benchmark but remains
below the roster midpoint. The Commanders have their answer
at quarterback. Now they need the rest of the team to give
him a larger margin for error.

Jacksonville is one of the most important teams near the
middle lines because they have the pieces to contend.
Trevor Lawrence has Brian Thomas Jr. and Jakobi Meyers
around him, while Liam Coen has enough offensive talent to
                    create favorable matchups.

Now the Jaguars have to finish plays. Dropped passes and
offensive-line inconsistency can ruin an offense that
depends on timing. Josh Hines-Allen gives the defense a
proven difference-maker, but the offense has to become more
dependable from one week to the next.

Jacksonville is close enough to both dividing lines that a
real step forward from Lawrence and the offense could move
the entire team into a much stronger position.

Cam Ward is a young quarterback worth building
around. The problem is how much still has to be built.

Offensive-line and receiver depth leave Ward with a smaller
margin for error. The hope is that the 4th overall pick, Carnell Tate becomes the weapon they envision.
Jeffery Simmons is an all-pro, but one defensive star cannot cover every weakness
                    across the roster.

Tennessee remains below both dividing lines. The Titans
need Ward to develop, but they also need enough help around
him to make that development possible.

NFL power rankings usually start with last season’s record and move a few teams around based on offseason headlines. That can tell part of the story. It does not tell us how a team is actually built.

That is why we created the PFM Team Score.

PFM grades all 32 teams across seven areas: quarterback stability, roster strength, coaching direction, recent performance, offense, defense and franchise direction.

The goal is not to predict one game. It is to show where every team stands, what each team can trust and what could hold it back.

Now, let’s get to the rankings and the teams that stand out most.

The Complete Rankings

Here are the first complete PFM rankings for all 32 NFL teams. The overall score matters, but the grades underneath it tell the better story.

View the Pre-Training Camp PFM Rankings

The Biggest Surprise: Dallas Cowboys at No. 21

Dallas at No. 21 will look too low to plenty of fans. The Cowboys own a top-five offense with an 86.0 grade. QB Stability sits at 81.6, while Roster Strength comes in at 79.3.

Those are useful pieces, but they are not enough to cover the rest of the team. Defense is the biggest problem at 73.9. Coaching Direction is 73.7, and Recent Performance sits at 73.0. That leaves Dallas with too many areas working against its biggest strength.

Franchise Direction at 74.1 creates another long-term question, but it is not the main reason Dallas ranks outside the top 20 entering the season.

PFM is not saying the Cowboys are guaranteed to miss the playoffs. It is saying the current team is weaker than its reputation.

The Most Complete Team in the Rankings

Seattle earns the top spot because it has the strongest two-way profile in the rankings. The Seahawks grade at 86.6 on offense, while the defense is even better at 89.6.

There is no obvious weakness in Seattle’s current-season grades. The clearest uncertainty is in the backfield after Super Bowl MVP Kenneth Walker III left for Kansas City.

Zach Charbonnet is working his way back from a torn ACL, while first-round rookie Jadarian Price still has to prove he can handle an NFL role. That does not erase the rest of Seattle’s profile, but it is the position worth watching as the season approaches.

The Quarterback Doing the Most Work

Justin Herbert gives the Los Angeles Chargers an 86.1 QB Stability grade. He also lands in the Quarterback on an Island section of the PFM Power Map.

The roster grade of 78.3 is not a major weakness, but it is well behind the quarterback situation. The bigger concern is an Explosiveness grade of 75.3. Los Angeles needs more consistent big-play production so Herbert does not have to create nearly everything himself.

The NFL’s No-Excuses Team

San Francisco has the pieces.

Roster Strength sits at 85.3, QB Stability is 85.7 and the defense checks in at 81.9. The 49ers are built to win now, and this roster should be judged by what it does in the current window.

Franchise Direction tells a different story. San Francisco grades at only 75.5 because several of the team’s most important players are closer to the end of their careers than the beginning.

The pressure is on. Trent Williams is not getting any younger, and the same is true for George Kittle and Christian McCaffrey. This core still has enough talent to make a serious run, but the window will not stay open forever.

Explore the Complete PFM System

The overall rankings are only the starting point. Every team has a full dashboard showing its PFM Team Score, NFL rank, strongest grade, biggest concern, Team DNA and season outlook.

Explore all 32 NFL team dashboards, compare any two NFL teams or view the league through the PFM Power Map.

You can also view the complete rankings for QB Stability, Roster Strength, Coaching Direction, Explosiveness and Franchise Direction.

These rankings will change.

Injuries will happen. Quarterback situations will move. Coaches will prove us right or wrong. Some teams will outperform the talent on paper, and others will waste it.

PFM will keep every update and every receipt.

Now that the majority of the 2026 NFL free agency period is behind us, it’s time to start looking ahead to the 2026 NFL Draft in April. Several teams made big time moves to solidify their rosters (see the Chiefs, Steelers and 49ers). While others are relying on the draft to fill holes. In our version 1 mock draft we lay out how the first round will unfold with some selections highlighted below.

5 Buckeyes go in the first round – Even though Ohio State failed to go back-to-back you can’t ignore the sheer talent on that roster. The Buckeyes will once again be the talk of the draft with several high upside prospects going in the top ten. Caleb Downs is the best overall prospect in this draft in my opinion and the Browns will have a cornerstone on their defense for many years to come.

The Love sweepstakes – Star Notre Dame running back Jeremiyah Love was already getting plenty of buzz pre-combine and the hype reached another level post-combine. Love displayed the speed and quickness that has scouts drooling. How high will he go? I don’t think he will get past the Titans at 4. Is that too high to pick a running back? That’s debatable but Love is a special weapon that can carry an offense wherever he goes.

Commanders grab WR1 – I’ve been impressed thus far on how Washington is handling this free agency period. As many know, the Commanders had the oldest roster in the league last year and they set out to get younger across the board. They added Odafe Oweh who flashed with the Chargers last year finishing with 7.5 sacks. They also added several weapons for Jayden Daniels including TE Chig Okonkwo. The youth movement will continue as the select WR Carnell Tate with the 7th pick. Tate is the best overall receiver in this draft and could be the next Terry McLaurin.

Here we are, in the final week of the NFL season, with a rematch of Superbowl XLIX. Only in this one, Tom Brady is not leading the helm it’s a young man named Drake Maye. A young man who has showed us he can use his arm, his legs and seems to have a very high Football IQ. Then you have Sam Darnold who has had a long journey of ups and downs. Could this be the year he gets over the hump and wins his first Super Bowl.

This is a very interesting matchup when we dive into the X’s and O’s. It’s very easy to say Seattle will run away with this one. They have a very good balanced offense with Kenneth Walker and Jaxon Smith-Njigba. They have two great blocking tight-ends who provide a huge impact in the running game. On defense they don’t blitz much, but they seem to get the quarterback with ease. On paper, their the better team. But wait a minute, does the better team always win? It’s about execution, it’s about timely plays at timely moments. It’s about field goals in pressure moments. All of these things play a factor in the outcome of the biggest game of the year. For the Patriots, they’ve been winning all year with smart QB play, a solid run game and tough hard nosed defense. There defense is a reflection of their tough hard nosed coach and Mike Vrabel. He has these guys believing, and why not the Patriots this year, why not?

Embed from Getty Images

What do the underdog (-4.5) Patriots have to do to win this game? I think first and foremost they must keep Seattle’s offense off the field. Seattle is way too dangerous, and they can score points very quickly. A couple mid-range passes to JSN and before you know it there on the 10 yard line. They should and will have a plan for JSN, because as he goes the rest of the team goes. He’s there #1 target and if they can shut him down They need to run the ball and control the clock as much as they can. They need to mix in some play action and throw short to intermediate throws. But most important be smart with the ball. Their margin for error in this game is very slim. They need to take advantage of certain opportunities and score touchdowns, not field goals when they have a chance. Also, they will need one if not two turnovers and create a short field for themselves. It’s important to remember, Sam Darnold has had his issues, and has made his mistakes in big games. I don’t think he just forgets about that, and maybe even thinks about it during this game. There is a lot of pressure in the biggest game of the season. But if he stays mistake free and lights it up, it could be a long game for the Patriots.

What do the favorites Seattle have to do? Well, that’s fairly simple. They need to play their game with a balanced offensive attack, play good defense and minimize turnovers. They cannot give the Patriots a short field. They need to “run up the score” and just keep the pedal on the gas. If they get up by 14 or 21 I think the game is over. They cannot let the Pats linger in this game and stay close. On the defensive side of the ball, they need to come after Maye early and often. He has been sacked 15 times in the 3 playoff games he’s played. If this continues, they will have no chance in this game. With all that said, my prediction is soley on the fact that whoever the critics thought would win and whatever they thought the score would be, either the opposite would happen or most of them were clearly wrong. Everybody is on that Seattle Train as they should be, there the better team, but slow your role!! I like the Patriots in a game where they frustrate Seattle with their potent D and create turnovers. In this game, Darnold may struggle, so how does he overcome that adversity. Everybody sit back on your couch and watch this, as it may be a different game then we all think it might be.

Patriots 21 Seattle 20

What a wild week 3 in the NFL. The block party in the 1 O’clock window was just crazy to watch. It just goes to show how important special teams is in the modern game. As for fantasy, there were some surprise showings including Caleb Williams best day as a pro. There were also more injuries of note that are worth noting. Let’s take a look at those below.

James Conner (vs. SEA) – Conner suffered a gruesome ankle injury in the loss to the 49ers. He is now out for the year which means it’s Trey Benson‘s time in Arizona. Benson is worth spending a good amount of FAAB on especially if you’re in need of a running back.

Terry McLaurin (@ ATL) – McLaurin finally had a breakout game but it came at a cost. He picked up a quad injury that may keep him out this week when the Commanders face the Falcons. The injury didn’t look serious at the time but it’s worth monitoring as his status is in doubt.

Najee Harris (@ NYG) – Yet another running back fell victim to a season ending Achilles injury, this time it’s Harris. Najee shared the workload with rookie Omarion Hampton but now it will be the Hampton show in LA.

It was a wild week 2 in the NFL. There were plenty of high scoring games that lit up fantasy matchups including the Cowboys OT thriller over the Giants. There were also some big high profile injuries that could affect the landscape of the rest of the fantasy season. Let’s quickly go over some of those injuries that could affect your week 3 lineups.

Jayden Daniels (vs. LV) – Daniels and the Commanders were pretty beat up following the Thursday night beatdown in Green Bay. Daniels is dealing with a knee sprain he picked up late in the 4th quarter that currently has him day-to-day. If he were to miss Sunday’s matchup vs. the Raiders, Marcus Mariota would be next in line to start.

Aaron Jones (vs. CIN) – It’s been an injury plagued career for Jones and it’s unfortunate because he has so much talent. This time it’s a hamstring injury that he picked up Sunday night against the Falcons. The news doesn’t look good for Jones as the Vikings just placed him on IR. Jordan Mason should now get the majority of the carries and is a top waiver priority if available.

It’s so good to have the NFL back in action. There really is nothing better and week 1 did not disappoint. Who had Daniel Jones and Justin Fields finishing top 3 in fantasy points? While the unexpected always happens in week 1 you can expect week 2 to be closer to the norm.

Unfortunately there were plenty of injuries last week that could shape the fantasy season. Let’s take a look at some we are monitoring this week.

Xavier Worthy (vs PHI) – I had high hopes for Worthy this season but he was knocked out early on Friday night due to some friendly fire. It’s a separated shoulder for the 2nd year wideout but the good news is he is considered day-to-day and might play on a brace. Still, I would be surprised if he suited up this week.

Brock Purdy (@ NO) – Purdy is dealing with a shoulder and toe injury that may see him miss Sunday’s matchup with the Saints. It’s unfortunate as the matchup couldn’t be any better for him and the passing game. If Purdy can’t go, Mac Jones would be in line for the start.

Brock Bowers (vs. LAC) – Bowers picked up a knee injury in Sunday’s game vs. the Patriots. As of now, it doesn’t look serious but owners will want to monitor his practice schedule this week.

There is nothing quite like week 1 in the NFL and it’s just 2 days away. This year we will have games on Thursday, Friday, Sunday and Monday so be sure to adjust your rosters accordingly. As usual week 1 in fantasy football is always unpredictable and there is always players that surprise. Before you get to our week 1 rankings let’s check in on some injuries we are monitoring.

Najee Harris (vs. KC) – Harris has recently been cleared for contact and is expected to suit up on Friday night. How much he plays is still to be determined but I expect rookie Omarion Hampton to get the majority of the workload.

Matthew Stafford (vs. HOU) – Stafford has missed most of the offseason due to a back injury but has recently been cleared for week 1. This injury is concerning for the 37 year-old quarterback who usually struggles in week 1 contests.

Tyreek Hill (@ IND) – It’s been a noisy offseason for Hill who was called out by his quarterback for his off the field drama. It looks like he is ready to go for week 1 after dealing with an oblique injury. Still, it’s hard to get too excited for Hill this season as his numbers continue to decline.

I always enjoy filling out sleeper rankings for the upcoming season. There will ultimately be some swings and misses but if you hit on just a handful of these, it could really set you up for success. How do we define fantasy football sleepers? Let’s do a quick breakdown of that below.

We are part of the Expert Consensus Rank (ECR) on FantasyPros. This means that our rankings are included in the overall ECR on FantasyPros rankings from week to week. ECR is an ideal metric as it’s not just based on the average rank for each position. With that said, sleepers are defined as players currently outside of the cutoffs below based on the ECR.

QB: Outside top 15

RB: Outside top 45

WR: Outside top 55

TE: Outside top 15

DST: Outside top 10

Quick Hits

In the running back room, there are two names I am keeping an eye on. J.K. Dobbins and Jacory Croskey-Merritt. Dobbins could very well be the lead back in Denver to start the season. As for the Commanders rookie running back Croskey-Merritt, don’t be surprised if he takes over the lead role by midseason.
