Back in 2020, the Kansas City Chiefs captured their second Super Bowl title thanks to a 4th quarter comeback against the San Francisco 49ers. The two juggernauts will face off again on Sunday in another heavy-weight battle made for Vegas. Who has the edge in Super Bowl LVIII and who will eventually come out on top? Find out below as we give you our prediction for the big game.

San Francisco 49ers -2 vs. Kansas City Chiefs (Sunday 6:30 PM EST on CBS)

I wouldn’t be surprised if Super Bowl LVIII went to overtime. That’s how close these two teams are to each other. On the one side, you have the dynamic 49ers offense led by Christian McCaffrey and on the other, you have the great Patrick Mahomes. These two stars are the headline but both of these teams are much more than that.

This is perhaps the best defense the Chiefs have had under Mahomes and Andy Reid. They finished 2nd in the league allowing just 17.3 points per game. The Chiefs also finished 2nd in total yards per game at 289.8 right behind the Baltimore Ravens. DC Steve Spagnuolo deserves his flowers as he has become one of the best defensive minds in the NFL today.

Embed from Getty Images

Speaking of defense the 49ers are right behind the Chiefs in terms of defensive rankings. They have studs all across their d-line but the heart of this defense is the linebackers. Dre Greenlaw and Fred Warner are two of the best in the business at their position and they will have their hands full with Mahomes on Sunday. In order to win, the 49ers will need to force some mistakes from Mahomes which seems almost impossible at this point.

It may seem cliche but this game will be won in the trenches. Specifically the 49ers o-line vs. the Chiefs d-line. The Chiefs line is of course anchored by Chris Jones but the rest of the unit is underrated. As a unit, the Chiefs defense was 2nd in pressures at 27.8% and 2nd in sacks at 57. The Chiefs however will be without Charles Omenihu who recently went on IR. Omenihu is a rising star who will be missed.

The 49ers 0-line is led by future Hall of Famer Trent Williams. Williams and company will need to be at the top of their game to limit the pressures on quarterback Brock Purdy. This is where the mastery of Kyle Shanahan’s run game comes into play. There is no one better in the NFL at scheming the run and l expect them to stick to it all game long.

As stated earlier this is one of the toughest Super Bowls to predict. These two teams are about as close as you can get. I believe in the end the 49ers will narrowly escape with a close win and give Shanahan his first Lombardi trophy.

Game Pick: 49ers 24- Chiefs 21

It’s officially Super Bowl week in Las Vegas where the San Francisco 49ers and Kansas City Chiefs are getting set for the big game. There will be plenty of storylines to watch this week including if Kyle Shanahan can get his first Super Bowl as a coach. This will also be a rematch of Super Bowl LIV where the Chiefs won 31-20.

Before we make our Super Bowl LVIII pick later this week let’s first preview the game.

Early Line

As of today, the early line for Super Bowl LVIII is the 49ers -2. This is pretty much where I expect it to be although it could get down to San Francisco -1 by game time. I am expecting a close game and it looks like the sharks are expecting the same.

The current over/under is at 47.5 but I could see this number also dropping before game time. This should be a relatively low-scoring game with two stellar defenses going at it. I don’t expect a shootout like we saw last year with the Chiefs winning 38-35 over the Eagles.

Brock Purdy vs. Patrick Mahomes

The quarterback matchup in this game will be fascinating to watch. Patrick Mahomes is once again playing excellent playoff football. His numbers haven’t been off the charts but he has played turnover-free football thus far and is using his legs for timely runs. This 49ers defense will present another test for Mahomes and the Chiefs but they have proved they are up for the challenge.

Embed from Getty Images</center

Meanwhile, in San Francisco all eyes will be on Brock Purdy. Purdy has been the hot topic of discussion this past week with some calling him just a game manager. Purdy is much more than that if you dive more into his game. He led the league in quarterback rating in the regular season at 113.0 and also was a league leader in yards per attempt at 9.6. Sure this 49ers offense is loaded with talent but Purdy has shown he can carry this team if needed.

Andy Reid vs. Kyle Shanahan

On the coaching side of things, this could very well be the last game that Andy Reid coaches. Reid flirted with retiring after last season but ultimately decided to return. If the Chiefs win again I wouldn’t be shocked if Reid decides to hang it up ending his Hall of Fame coaching career.

Kyle Shanahan however, is just getting started in his coaching career. At 44, this will be Shanahan’s 3rd appearance in a Super Bowl and second as a head coach. We all remember the 28-3 meltdown in Atlanta when Shanahan was OC but don’t forget the 49ers were up 20-10 in Super Bowl LIV before collapsing in the 4th quarter. If Shanahan can finally seal the deal and win his first Lombardi it will be the first of many.

Key Injuries to Watch

For the most part, both the Chiefs and the 49ers are coming into Super Bowl LVIII fairly healthy but there are some injuries to monitor. Chiefs running back Isiah Pacheco is dealing with toe and ankle injuries but the good news is he is off the injury report. Star Chiefs defensive end Chris Jones is dealing with a quad injury that has him limited on the practice reports. Jones also has no game status this week which is huge for the Chiefs as they will need him.

In San Francisco, tight end George Kittle is dealing with a toe injury that had him listed as DNP this past week. It looks like Kittle will go but it’s worth monitoring his status this week. 49ers DE Arik Armstead also showed up on the injury report last week with knee and foot injuries. It looks as if these injuries are not serious and he should also be good to go as well.

Since Patrick Mahomes entered the league in 2017 he has been nearly unstoppable. When you look at it there really has only been one team that has consistently given Mahomes problems and it’s the Cincinnati Bengals. Mahomes and the Chiefs were finally able to get past the Bengals in last year’s AFC Championship on their way to another Super Bowl victory. Will we see more of the same from Mahomes and the Chiefs next season? Let’s break that down further with a preview and record prediction for the 2023-2024 season.

The Good

Outside of Mahomes, there are very few players in the NFL as valuable as Travis Kelce. The 33-year-old Kelce is already one of the best tight ends of all time and is showing no signs of slowing down. In 2022, Kelce had 1,338 receiving yards along with a career-high 12 touchdowns. Beyond those stats, he also had 648 YAC (Yards After Catch) which is impressive for an aging tight end. Kelce was the main reason the Chiefs were comfortable with trading Tyreek Hill to the Miami Dolphins. It’s also the reason why the Chiefs don’t necessarily need a star wide receiver on offense. Kelce is their de facto WR1 and I don’t see that changing next season.

Embed from Getty Images

The Bad

Andy Reid is one of the best offensive minds the NFL has seen. Reid is one of the reasons Mahomes has been so successful in Kansas City. The other reason is Eric Bieniemy. Bieniemy was the offensive coordinator for the Chiefs since 2018. He has now moved on to a bigger role with the Washington Commanders and will be the full-time play-caller there.

Don’t expect a drastic change to the Chiefs offense as Matt Nagy takes over as the new OC. With that said I could see a slight drop off in Kansas City’s offense with Bieniemy gone. Bieniemy is notorious for being a stickler for the little details. He also expects a lot from his offensive players and is not afraid to get on them. This will show up in critical points during a game and could be the difference between winning and losing. Make no mistake, the Chiefs offense will not be a weakness next season but it’s worth watching how this change will impact it.

The Prediction

In all, I expect the Kansas City Chiefs to once again be the AFC West champions. I do see a slight drop off in wins at 12 as they have one of the toughest schedules in the NFL next season. One thing to keep an eye on is the Chris Jones situation. Jones has yet to report to the team and if he misses time it will be a big blow to the Chiefs defense.

2023-2024 Record: 12-5 (First in the Division)

The Washington Commanders are on the verge of hiring Eric Bieniemy as the Offensive Coordinator/Assistant Head Coach. It’s being reported that this will be a multi-year deal in which Bieniemy will have full control of the offense. This move has Commanders fans excited and rightfully so. Bieniemy helped lead the Kansas City Chiefs to it’s second Super Bowl title in 4 years. He has been an integral part of the leagues best offense over that span. Given all that, the question remains. Why would Bieniemy choose a lateral move to the Commanders? Let’s break down some of the key reasons.

Full Time Play-Caller

Although Bieniemy was the OC for the Chiefs it is widely known that he didn’t call the plays. Head Coach Andy Reid took care of those duties during gameday. Even with that, Bieniemy was a big part of the offensive gameplan and play designs. Now that he is joining the Commanders he will be able to take full control of the offense including calling the plays. Some are saying this is one of the reasons why Bieniemy hasn’t yet become a head coach but I am not buying it. There have been plenty of offensive minds over the years that have become head coaches without calling plays.

Embed from Getty Images

Commanders Offensive Potential

The Commanders haven’t exactly been an offensive juggernaut during Ron Rivera‘s tenure. There were times when the offense disappeared during games and it was one of the reasons former OC Scott Turner was fired. When you look at the skilled positions for Washington you can see the potential. They have three outstanding wide receivers, two versatile running backs and a solid tight end group. The missing piece has been the quarterback. Rivera recently stated that Sam Howell will be in heavy consideration for QB1 next year and rightfully so. You could see his potential when he started the final game of the year against the Cowboys. He has a massive arm and the mobility to extend plays. You would have to think Bieniemy is intrigued by Howell and it’s one of the reasons he chose Washington.

Potential Future Head Coach?

It’s no secret that the Washington Commanders are up for sale and looking for new owners. The fanbase is patiently waiting for the day to become a reality and they will finally be rid of Dan Snyder. In the meantime now Denver Head Coach Sean Payton admitted that potential owners reached out to him to see if he was interested in the Commanders. It’s not that far fetched to see new ownership in place and they might be interested in making Bieniemy the head coach. Furthermore, there have been rumors that Ron Rivera may retire soon and there could be an agreement to elevate Bieniemy when he does. Either way I expect Bieniemy to have a huge impact in Washington and Commanders fans should be excited with this hire.

We got treated to a great game this past Sunday by two really good teams, with really good quarterbacks. Unfortunately, for one team they were out coached by the other. This was a tale of two halves with the Eagles dominating the first half and the Chiefs in the second half. The halftime adjustments made by Andy Reid along with the execution of the offense was top notch. They could not be stopped by the Eagles so called dominating defense. What did we learn from Super bowl 57?

Patrick Mahomes hurt or not is the best quarterback in the league. He deserves that MVP recognition, as he willed his team to a 3 point win in Super Bowl 57. The play of the game was the 20 yard scramble on the last drive. It sure looked like his ankle was perfectly fine as defenders chased him as he ran. Mahomes in winning his second Super Bowl is put an elite category of quarterbacks that have one more than one Super Bowl, and he’s only 27!

What Eagles defense? The reason the Eagles lost his game was because of their defense. They could not stop for the life of them the Chiefs in the second half. The pass rush could not get to Mahomes and Travis Kelce was having a field day. The Eagles defense needed to step up in this game and they didn’t.

Jalen Hurts has arrived, if the haters were still out there. The Eagles did not lose because of Hurts. He was accurate passing and ran the ball when he had to. The only mistake he made was the fumble as he was running in the first half. Other than that pretty flawless.

Coaching: Andy Reid proved to everybody that he is one of the smartest coaches in the league. There were two touchdown plays where they did the same thing and totally fooled the Eagles defense. This reminds me of the teacher schooling the student in a big boy type game. Coaching was a big part of this game and why they won.

All and all this was a great game to watch with one team executing a lot better. The Chiefs should be early favorites to win again next year.

The NFL is a highly competitive and complex game. Teams are constantly seeking an edge over their opponents in order to win games and reach the Super Bowl. One of the ways that teams are gaining an advantage is through the use of analytics.

Analytics involves the collection, analysis, and interpretation of data in order to make informed decisions. In the NFL, this data can come from a variety of sources, including player statistics, game film, and player tracking technology. By analyzing this data, teams can gain a deeper understanding of their own strengths and weaknesses, as well as those of their opponents.

The Benefits of Analytics in the NFL

Analytics can provide teams with a more comprehensive view of a player’s abilities and limitations. This can help teams to make more informed decisions when it comes to player scouting, drafting, and roster construction. For example, the Cleveland Browns used analytics to identify quarterback Baker Mayfield as a strong prospect in the 2018 NFL Draft. The Browns analytics team analyzed Mayfield’s college statistics and game film to determine that he had the arm talent, accuracy, and leadership qualities necessary to succeed in the NFL. Clearly in the long run this did not pan out for the Browns but they are still the leaders in the clubhouse when it comes to the use of analytics.

Embed from Getty Images

Another way teams can use analytics is to gain a deeper understanding of their opponents tendencies and strategies. This information can be used to develop game plans that take into account the strengths and weaknesses of the opposing team. The New England Patriots, for instance, are known for their meticulous game preparation. They are the best at this in the modern game today but do they use analytics in that process? Head Coach Bill Belichick has spoken out in the past about the use of analytics and that he prefers the old school approach. However the Patriots are known to use analytics in their scouting department when it comes to the draft and seem to be warming up to the trend.

By using analytics to identify areas for improvement, teams can more effectively allocate resources and make changes to their operations. This can lead to increased efficiency and a better overall performance. The Dallas Cowboys, use analytics to optimize their practice schedule and reduce the risk of player injury. By analyzing player workload and injury data, the Cowboys were able to make changes to their practice schedule that reduced the number of soft-tissue injuries suffered by players.

The world of NFL analytics is constantly evolving and teams should make use of the latest technology. Player tracking systems to collect data and gain a deeper understanding of the game have become commonplace. This data can be used to inform decisions and improve performance on the field. Most teams by now use the Zebra Sports player tracking system to collect data on player speed, acceleration, and other metrics. This information is used to inform game planning and player development decisions.

How Teams Can Use Analytics to Reach the Super Bowl

Analytics can provide teams with the information they need to make informed decisions on and off the field. This can range from player personnel decisions to play calling during games. The Los Angeles Rams used analytics to inform their play-calling during their Super Bowl run in 2018. The Rams analytics team along with the coaches identify the most effective plays and formations to use in different game situations. Head Coach Sean McVay admitted that analytics play an important role but to know the flow of the game and when to push buttons is just as important.

When it comes to the Kansas City Chiefs they also use analytics to inform their play-calling and game strategy. Like McVay, head coach Andy Reid still believes in the human element of the game and he has the ability to make the final call on the play in any situation. Still though these two teams have arguably been the most successful NFL teams recently and the fact that they embrace analytics is no surprise.

By now almost every NFL team has an analytics department in charge of using many data points to guide their football decisions. With the use of technology, analytics can be a very powerful tool to help propel teams to the Super Bowl. Those that fully accept analytics will have the upper hand on gameday and beyond.

Thanks to a last second field goal by Harrison Butker we now know who will battle it out for Super Bowl 57. The matchup is a juicy one, the Philadelphia Eagles vs the Kansas City Chiefs. You can’t really argue that these have been the best two teams in the NFL this year. The story lines are endless and I’m sure we will cover many of them during the coming weeks. First, let’s take a look some of our early thoughts in this Super Bowl preview.

How will the Chiefs slow down the Eagles rushing attack?

The Eagles once again ran all over their opponent scoring 4 rushing touchdowns. They totaled 148 yards on the ground against the leagues best defense. Jalen Hurts really didn’t need to do much through the air as the Eagles dominated the line of scrimmage. Stopping the Eagles rushing attack will no doubt be the #1 game plan for the Chiefs going into the Super Bowl. The issue will be if they load up to stop the run Hurts has the ability to beat them on the deep ball.

How will injuries play a role?

A bum ankle didn’t stop Patrick Mahomes from delivering in the clutch. You could see it affect him on some throws but he is a baller and delivered on several key plays down the stretch. I am not worried about Mahomes for this game as he will have plenty of time to rest but the Chiefs have other injury concerns. L’Jarius Sneed went down early in the game with a hand injury but was ruled out later due to a concussion. If Sneed were to miss this game it would be a huge blow for the Chiefs. He is arguably there best defender and is critical in the passing game. The Chiefs are also dealing with injuries at the wide receiver position as we wait to see the status of JuJu Smith-Schuster and Mecole Hardman.

Can the Eagles stop Travis Kelce?

Travis Kelce is the key to the Chiefs offense. Everybody knows this so why is he so hard to stop? Kelce has great instincts and is a master at finding open space. Also the chemistry between him and Mahomes is the reason they have so much success. Mahomes has the ultimate trust in him. The Eagles will no doubt try to disrupt him at the line of scrimmage with their talented defensive line. They can only hope to disrupt the rhythm and keep everything underneath.

Andy Reid vs. Nick Sirianni

Andy Reid will look to hoist the Lombardi trophy vs his former team. Reid coached the Eagles for 14 years before jumping ship to lead the Chiefs. He had success during his time in Philadelphia but they never won the big one. On paper Reid vs. Sirianni seems like a mismatch. Reid will be a Hall of Famer one day and Sirianni is coaching in just his second season but this isn’t a complete mismatch. Sirianni has found the right buttons to push for his team and they seem to really rally around him. Let’s see how this plays out on Super Bowl Sunday.

Patrick Mahomes vs Jalen Hurts

Two MVP candidates, two of the best quarterbacks in the game and it all comes down to this. Mahomes vs. Hurts will be a heavyweight battle and I for can’t wait to see who comes out on top. Mahomes has been here before so the stage won’t be too big for him. Hurts looks to continue his amazing season by leading the Eagles to a Super Bowl victory. If Mahomes is fully healthy you have to give the Chiefs the upper hand but not by much. The Eagles and Jalen Hurts have mastered the RPO offense and will look to continue their winning ways as they aim for the ultimate prize.

Sean Payton has a big opportunity on Monday Night Football

The Saints head coach Sean Payton has gone 19-4 with Teddy Bridgewater, Jameis Winston, and Taysom Hill in the past three seasons. In comparison, the legendary Bill Belichick has gone 16-15 without Tom Brady in the past two years. I’m not saying that Payton deserves to be ranked ahead of the six-time Super Bowl champion Bill Belichick, but Payton clearly deserves more respect for the production he’s managed to pull off without his alter ego in Hall of Fame QB Drew Brees.

It’s very impressive that Payton doesn’t need an elite QB in the building, but he can actually uplift a QB and offense’s ability with his own creative genius. The Saints QB whisperer turned Taysom Hill into a reliable QB2 and swiss army knife, Jameis Winston from the worst QB in the league to a Top 12 signal-caller, and he managed to rip off five straight victories with the game manager Teddy B when the Rams all-time great defensive tackle Aaron Donald broke Drew Brees’s thumb.

Teddy Bridgewater since taking over for an injured Drew Brees:

? 5-0 W-L
? 9-2 TD/Int ratio
? 1,205 pass yds pic.twitter.com/ocMSzNoK7B
— ESPN (@espn) October 20, 2019

In 2021, Payton has missed Jameis Winston for much of the season, Michael Thomas for the entire season coaches via COVID, multiple defenders injured (Davenport, Ceedy Duce, Kwon Alexander), but he’s fought hard and led his team to a 7-7 record. The Saints did have a rough streak with Trevor Siemian, where they lost games to the Titans, Bills, Cowboys, Eagles, and Falcons (all potential playoff teams). Still, Payton deserves a lot of credit for their monster victories and ability to be in the position they now sit.

The Saints were displaced in Week 1 and had to play a home game in Jacksonville against the Green Bay Packers. Yet, the Saints blew the brakes of the Packers and came away with a 38-3 victory. On Halloween against the Bucs, Winston went down with a brutal season-ending injury. Nonetheless, the Saints pulled up an incredible upset victory with Siemian playing for three of the quarters. Payton also led his team to monster victories against the New England Patriots and Seattle Seahawks (both on the road).

Payton’s scrappy team would of course win their biggest game of the year in Week 15 when the head coach himself was out of the building with COVID. Dennis Allen’s defense would shut down Tom Brady with a 9-0 victory in the Saints “Super Bowl” like matchup. Now the Saints find themselves sitting at 7-7, the playoffs on the line, and the biggest challenge of the season to date.

With this sack, Cameron Jordan now has over 100 in his #NFL career!

?: NBC and @peacockTV pic.twitter.com/DMZg1gmdkA
— Sunday Night Football on NBC (@SNFonNBC) December 20, 2021

The Ian Book-led Saints offensive attack has to face off against the Miami Dolphins team that won an improbable six games straight after starting the season 1-7. The hottest team in football faces a Saints an already decimated team that will now be missing Taysom Hill, Trevor Siemian, Demario Davis, Ryan Ramczyk, Kwon Alexander, and Malcolm Jenkins via COVID. Still, If the dome can start rocking and the Saints can sneak away with a victory, the Saints will have a very realistic chance of conquering their pain and making the playoffs. Payton won’t get a coach of the year award if the team wins out, but this will be one of the most impressive, unique seasons of his legacy.

I do believe that if Payton can march his Book/Hill-led team to the playoffs, his coaching rank should be closer to the cream of the crop. I’d say he and Mike Tomlin are interchangeable because of Tomlin’s Super Bowl count, but that should change if Payton can overcome his 2021 circumstances in the Brees-less era. He should surely be ahead of Tomlin, who has routinely seen the glass crumble below his feet without Big Ben. If Payton can bring his team to the playoffs with his circumstances, the combination of Payton’s offensive production, one Super Bowl ring, and current grittiness should place him ahead of Tomlin (even if he has two SB rings). Tomlin has enjoyed high-end success, but he’s been more on a roller coaster ride than Payton has over the past several years.

We have exclusive video of Mike Tomlin at halftime pic.twitter.com/bPh7cTRImU
— DraftKings Sportsbook (@DKSportsbook) December 26, 2021

I believe that Payton is ahead of Andy Reid at this moment because of the juggernaut offense he’s yielded for years and the talent he showed without number 9 in the huddle. Payton has broken countless records with Brees throughout the years. Don’t let the Patrick Mahomes/Tyreek Hill/ Travis Kelce show fool you from forgetting how many 5,000 yard seasons Brees and company registered. The Saints head coach has also been nearly as efficient with a QB not named Drew as Reid was with Alex Smith in Kansas City. It may be easy to have a bias by recognizing the Chiefs potential and automatically assuming number 15 will win a second Super Bowl soon and the team is a true dynasty squad in the AFC. But, let’s not get ahead of ourselves just yet. We saw the Seahawks take a 180-degree turn with Caroll and Russell Wilson. Even the Saints didn’t reach their full potential with Brees and Payton in the postseason. All in all, Payton appears to be the second most impressive coach at this moment.

Payton, also known as Kevin James, will have a lot of work to do to catch the best mind in the league: Bill Belichick. But, Payton does have youth on his side. The Saints HC is a whopping 12 years younger than Belichick. If the Saints can find a franchise QB with the insanely talented roster they have around the QB position, the slightly underappreciated leader of the Saints may be able to acquire a couple more Lombardi trophies. Perhaps the Saints have their future with the hidden gem in Ian Book? We will soon find out.

The Kansas City Chiefs are once again Super Bowl favorites

By Chris Moore (Twitter: @fantasy_moore)

Defense Dominating

It’s funny how the 2021 NFL season has changed so drastically over the year. Through the first few weeks of the year, the Cardinals looked like Super Bowl favorites. Some thought the Chiefs wouldn’t make the playoffs. A lot has changed around the league from the beginning of the year to now. From 3-4 to now standing at 10-4, the Chiefs are back. The Chiefs have their offense rolling again and have surprisingly found a defense this season.

The Chiefs’ defense has been playing phenomenal lately, ranking in the top ten for turnovers forced and points allowed. The Chiefs’ defense has been a large part of the Chiefs’ current seven-game win streak. We have already seen what Patrick Mahomes and this offense can do when they are firing on all cylinders. Add in a top defensive unit, and the Chiefs are a dangerous team heading into the postseason.

Offense Heating Up

The Chiefs’ offense was struggling at the beginning of the year. But over their past five games, the offense is starting to look like the Chiefs we all know. Coming off a huge overtime win against the Chargers, the Chiefs offense just put up 498 total yards and a massive 34-28 overtime win against a division rival. Mahomes was red hot in this game passing for over 400 yards and three passing touchdowns. Last week the Chiefs offense looked like the Chiefs we have seen dominating over the past few years. With the offense starting to perform how we are used to seeing them and the Chiefs’ newfound defensive unit playing the way they are, there’s no doubt this team should be a favorite in the AFC heading into the postseason. If Patrick Mahomes doesn’t have to play a juggernaut defense “late in the postseason”, I’m not sure what can slow him down.

The Packers and Chiefs have taken over the top spots in our latest Power Rankings ?

Full 1-32: https://t.co/pvPc1LdCqn pic.twitter.com/zXYr2DKY9S
— ESPN (@espn) December 21, 2021

Super Bowl Favorites

The Chiefs are widely seen as the Super Bowl favorite.

We have already seen what the Chiefs can accomplish when Mahomes and Andy Reid are cooking. The Chiefs are a dangerous team that has already been in the Super Bowl in back-to-back seasons. I don’t know how you can look at this team and not expect them to be in the Super Bowl after the last two years. The AFC is a real tight race right now. But the Chiefs are on a different level compared to the other AFC contenders. Until he shows us a reason why we shouldn’t trust him, I’m expecting Mahomes and the Chiefs to be in the Super Bowl and find redemption this year.

Nick Foles trade to Kansas City?

By: Jake Rajala

The Kansas City Chiefs have unveiled a successful offseason at this midpoint of July. On offense, The reigning AFC Champions upgraded the offensive line unit by signing Joe Thuney in free agency and acquiring left tackle Orlando Brown in a trade from Baltimore Ravens. Andy Reid hasn’t made a lot of changes on the defensive side of the football this offseason, but the team surely expects young profiles like second year cornerback L’Jarius Sneed and second round pick linebacker Nick Bolton to transcend into defensive stars in the 2021 season.

From @NFLTotalAccess: Breaking down the #Ravens trade of standout OT Orlando Brown to the #Chiefs. pic.twitter.com/oIPzm7Z1xM
— Ian Rapoport (@RapSheet) April 23, 2021

The Chiefs clearly have improved the roster and filled in weak spots with proven upgrades. With that being said, it’s very clear to see that the Chiefs are AFC favorites and Super Bowl contenders.

Andy Reid, also known as Big Red, clearly has his team sitting pretty heading into training camp. The Chiefs are in a great position to start the regular season on fire and stroll into matchups against the Baltimore Ravens, divisional rival Las Vegas Raiders, and Buffalo Bills with loads of confidence. However, I see a slight, unique concern on this prometheus-like Chiefs squad.

The Chiefs backup QB amid the well oiled AFC juggernaut is the below average No. two QB, journeyman signal caller, Chad Henne. To sum up Henne’s lack of explosion and proven ability at this stage in his career, the 36 year old QB has thrown for a “combined five passing touchdowns in the past five years”. Henne with the backup role is especially a cause for concern because Mahomes has missed three games combined (and playoff gametime) in the last two seasons.

This effort from Chad Henne ?#RunItBack #NFLPlayoffs

?: #CLEvsKC on CBS
?: NFL app // Yahoo Sports app: https://t.co/H7Zs8ajXtu pic.twitter.com/xZioA6S4tF
— NFL (@NFL) January 17, 2021

I believe the number two QB position has been drastically underlooked given the other weak spots being prioritized, the cap situation, and the praises from the rooftops for Mahomes shadowing the interest in miniscule talent, or competition added to the QB room. However, I believe the Chiefs could blatantly use a more robust talent at the number two QB spot and there’s a perfect backup QB candidate for the Chiefs offense.

Reid’s former QB Nick Foles, who resides in Chicago, would be the perfect addition to Chiefs nation. Foles has the experience of Reid’s high flying offense, he’s one of the top backup QBs in the league, and he would be a sizable upgrade over Henne.

The Chicago Bears drafted Justin Fields and signed veteran pocket passer Andy Dalton this offseason. Fields and Dalton are battling for the starting QB gig, while Foles is seen as the odd man out. CBS Sports rightfully states Foles is a potential trade candidate amid a two headed QB battle brewing between Dalton and Fields. Matt Nagy would expectedly ship out the veteran QB if the right offer comes along. Foles is ought to be worth a 6th round draft pick in such an exchange.

Justin Fields didn’t let a little leg injury bother him ¯_(?)_/¯ #McGregorPoirier3 pic.twitter.com/VAYFR5R1sd
— Barstool Ohio State (@BarstoolOSU) July 11, 2021

New York Jets and Dallas Cowboys have been rumored to be trade candidates for the former stud Eagles QB. However, I believe the Chiefs would not only be the best fit for Foles, but it would ultimately be an underrated move by a Super Bowl contending team.

Foles was a QB under Reid when he entered the league as a Eagles third round draft pick. After Foles spun out in Philadelphia, he then reunited with Big Red in Kansas City in 2016. Foles’s time in the Windy City could be coming to an end, so he should go back to his roots and reunite with the coach that drafted him into the league.

Foles may not be a consistent starting QB in this league, but he’s thrown 20 passing touchdowns in the past few seasons as a rotating starter, he’s been a Super Bowl MVP, and he’s only 32 years old. The Chiefs could get an experienced, yet young profile, in Foles. When Mahomes sat out the January third matchup against the Chargers, the Chiefs lost 38-21 and lacked any explosion. In the Super Bowl showdown, Mahomes was clearly rusty and not himself, which resulted in a crushing 31-9 loss.

"MVP Nick Foles outdueled Tom Brady in the biggest offensive show in the history of the Super Bowl." —Steve Young pic.twitter.com/ghjpJOBIcW
— ESPN (@espn) February 5, 2018

The Chiefs clearly look like a shell of themselves when the MVP Pat Mahomes is not in the lineup. And unfortunately, Mahomes has missed too much time in recent memory. The former Super Bowl MVP that edged out Brady on the big stage can be the Chiefs QB to step onto the plate, if Mahomes goes down with another wretched injury.
