Does Daniel Jones or Justin Fields have the edge?

By: Jake Rajala

The (2-1) New York Giants are dueling the (2-1) Chicago Bears at home on Sunday at 1 PM. It would be an understatement to say that the NFL world didn’t expect each NFC team to be sitting at 2-1 after three contests. This will be the first time that Jones and Fields have squared off against one another.

The GMEN are led out by the young signal-caller Daniel Jones, who is unequivocally in a do-or-die 2022 season. The Bears handed the keys to the second-year QB Justin Fields & he’s honestly been having growing pains with some flashes of greatness this season. With that enunciated, I’m going to discuss the pivotal QB spot and project which signal-caller should have the edge entering Week 4.

The Bears believe in this man.

Justin Fields forever

pic.twitter.com/nIR2SoYJD0
— Jeff Bell (@4WhomJBellTolls) September 11, 2022

Justin Fields

The 23-year-old Bears QB Justin Fields had an admirable Week 1 performance against the San Francisco 49ers by throwing two touchdowns to one interception & accumulating an 85.7 passer rating. After Week 1, Fields’s magic sadly wore off. He registered a mere 70 passing yds, 0 TD, 1 int, and a 43.8 passer rating against the Green Bay Packers. Fields continued to climb down the ladder in Week 3 by unveiling 0 TDs, 2 ints and finishing with a 27.7 passer rating.

Fields blatantly doesn’t have the sexiest pieces on offense. His starting WRs are Darnell Mooney, Equanimeous St. Brown, and Dante Pettis. Fields does have an underrated TE in Cole Kmet and he finally made his debut against the Houston Texans last week (and he caught two passes for 40 yards).

2. Cole Kmet should've gone over 100 yards against Houston.

He was open frequently, but Justin missed him multiple times, either with bad passes or just not seeing him.

That throw to Mooney in triple coverage for his 2nd INT was a perfect example. #Bears pic.twitter.com/GQ1VDI0Dj6
— Erik Lambert (@ErikLambert1) September 26, 2022

It’s clear that Fields needs to improve his chemistry & it’s worrisome that there were opportunities for Fields to have a big day with Kmet in their first game together this season.

Daniel Jones

The starting QB for the not-so-little Giants is Daniel Jones, also known as Danny Dimes. Jones mustered out an impressive 81% completion percentage, 188 passing yards, two passing TDs, 1, and a 115.9 passer rating in Week 1 against the Tennessee Titans. Jones was also crisp in Week 2 against the Carolina Panthers with a 64.7 completion percentage, 176 passing yards, 1 TD, 0 INT, and an 87.4 passer rating.

Last Monday Night, Jones met his maker (also known as the Dallas Cowboys) — as he obtained 196 passing yards, 0 TDs, 1 interception, and a 57.9 passer rating. The worst part is that Jones suffered his first loss of the season.

Daniel Jones has played to win tonight, and he deserved better.

The haters are going to hate, but he's stepped up under a lot of pressure.
— Art Stapleton (@art_stapleton) September 27, 2022

Unfortunately, the Giants QB1 has been teed off on many occasions. He was sacked a whopping five times in Week 1, three times in Week 2, and even five times in Week 3. It’s extra special that Jones has found a way to stay effective — despite the pass rush from opponents that has been on his shoulders.

Verdict:

I don’t expect one of the two complex QBs with the potential to have a very productive performance in Week 4, but I sincerely believe that Jones should have a more successful day than Fields in their battle. Fields has undoubtedly been struggling over the prior two weeks & I wouldn’t be surprised if the Bears turn to Trevor Sieman (while they have a competitive record). My prior statement may sound quite unpopular (especially to Bears fans), but Fields needs to properly utilize his play-makers and put more points on the scoreboard.

Will Bills Mitchell Trubisky be a starter again?

By: Jeremy Trottier

As most NFL fans know by now, the Chicago Bears formerly believed to be franchise QB was not brought back to Chicago this offseason. Instead, he found a home up north with the Buffalo Bills”¦the only issue is he is a backup behind an MVP candidate of last year. His value in dynasty is pretty much nothing at the moment in drafts, however, should it be more?

In this article I will be reviewing some points as to why Mitchell Trubisky should have dynasty league value, or why he should be avoided at all costs.

Current Situation

Starting off with his current position, as I mentioned previously, being a backup to Josh Allen. Now granted, in no world will he start over Josh Allen in 2021, as Allen has the playbook down pat in Buffalo, and also performed like an elite QB in 2020. With that said, Allen does have a tendency to risk his body for the big play, quite often actually.

If Josh Allen keeps doing this and throwing himself into contact, the potential of him getting injured is definitely there, as we have seen before with other QBs who do this. The first coming to mind would be Cam Newton, who ended up putting himself in too many of those scenarios and getting hurt. If Allen does go down, Trubisky is almost guaranteed to take over for that duration of time, however long that may be.

Trubisky would be working with the system Buffalo has built too, primarily Stefon Diggs who led the league in receiving yards last season. His value in that situation would skyrocket.

Potential Future Situation

After this year, it is more about his future in the NFL obviously. Does he get a starting role elsewhere? My guess is yes. This situation is vaguely similar to that of Teddy Bridgewater sitting behind Drew Brees for some time to learn from him (despite Josh Allen being significantly younger now than Brees) and then being signed to a massive contract in Carolina.

If Trubisky can get a few opportunities this year to play, especially in a 17-game season now, he should definitely get a shot with a QB needy team. Sometimes just taking a year to soak in new information from a new coaching staff and with new players around you can hugely benefit your game. Teddy Bridgewater only had to start five games in New Orleans before his huge deal in Carolina, if Trubisky can prove he has developed in his time with Buffalo he may get an opportunity elsewhere as a starter.

Conclusion/Dynasty Value

Overall Trubisky should probably be the sort of player you pick up if you have the extra roster spot. Or if you are drafting fresh, pick him up in the last 4-5 rounds depending on how many teams you are playing against and just stash for awhile. Once his value rises, someone will likely have claimed him prior to that happening.

What you want to do is be ahead of the curve and have him now, so if Josh Allen were to go down you have a decent player this year. But more importantly, if he proves himself this year and hits free agency with that mentality, he could get the chance to be QB1 for another franchise again.

Is QB Andy Dalton the starting QB in 2021?

By: Jeremy Trottier

The Chicago Bears have had quite the offseason so far, moving pieces all over the place between additions and removals. With the drafting of Justin Fields, and the signing of Andy Dalton for a relatively decent amount, the debate for starting QB has begun. Most would expect Fields to start right away as he was taken early in this years draft, however that may not be the case immediately.

In this article, I will be going over three reasons as to why Andy Dalton should be the Bears starting quarterback in 2021.

Fields needs time to develop

A lot of people think throwing a QB straight into the game will work every time, or at least will work in their case. First off, Fields is a phenomenal quarterback from what we have seen, I cannot deny that in the slightest. However, taking a year to develop NFL tendencies and learn from the coaches in the building as well as learn the Bears’ scheme and offense would definitely benefit him in the long run.

We have seen this work out before, the primary example being with the Kansas City Chiefs letting Patrick Mahomes develop behind Alex Smith for a bit. Or even Justin Herbert behind Tyrod Taylor, despite only being a few weeks. Having Andy Dalton and Nick Foles around, two veteran QBs who have seen it all in a sense, to teach you the ins and outs of this next step would do wonders.

Chicago is not ready yet

This one is pretty self-explanatory, Chicago is not ready for a deep playoff push yet, potentially not a playoff push at all if they underperform. Even if Fields were to start, there’s no guarantee whatsoever that he can take them to the playoffs in his rookie campaign. Therefore risking the compromise of his health just to give him experience is not the brightest idea in the book.

With their coaching and GM situation also really on the brink of collapsing, the worst case scenario is Fields takes the field year one and has a coaching change after one year. Or even worse, he does not have enough to start yet and that gets the coach and GM fired because he underperforms year one. The best and most suitable scenario for Fields is to sit a year, let the Bears do whatever they do this year while he learns the playbook and scheme, and let the front office get cleaned out if it needs to be.

Andy Dalton can at least break Fields in

If the Bears do not heed this advice and start Fields in the first year, at least they should let Dalton break Fields in. What I mean by that is 50:50 split the season, starting Dalton for the first half of the year and Fields for the second half. Following the lines of what Miami did last year with Tua Tagovailoa and Ryan Fitzpatrick, where they just got Tua playing time while not rushing him in full time.

This knowledge of how to play in an NFL game and how to handle that pressure may do Fields some good, as it will make him work even harder in the next offseason to prepare once he knows what it is like. They cannot make the same mistake they make with Mitchell Trubisky, despite him and Fields being vastly different QBs.
