Latest dynasty outlook of Diontae Johnson

By: Jake Rajala

Diontae Johnson was a monster in 2021, as he recorded career highs in: receptions (107), targets (169) yards (1,161 yds), and touchdowns (8). His production spoke for himself, as he was a Top-10 fantasy WR in PPR (9th in points per game) in 2021. Johnson rightfully garnered a Pro Bowl spot last season, via his tremendous third season in the league.

DIONTAE JOHNSON GETS LOOSE ?pic.twitter.com/AGayCMazoY
— PFF PIT Steelers (@PFF_Steelers) October 31, 2021

It’s obvious that Johnson was from another planet last season, but the question is: can Johnson be a potent WR in the new-look Steelers offense? Well, I believe he certainly will be a stat machine for Mitchell Trubisky, as he seems to be logical 2022 starter.

Per Behind the Steelers Curtain, the Steelers fans also believe Trubisky is in line to be the QB1.

There are two important factors revolving the Steelers QB change. For 1. Big Ben was far from excellent in 2021. The Steelers QB legend threw 22 touchdowns, 6.2 Y/A, and unveiled 3,740 yds. For 2. Trubisky (assuming he gets the Week 1 keys to the offense), can likely be an upgrade over the 2021 version of Roethlisberger in a Steelers uniform. Trubisky threw 24 touchdowns in 14 games as a sophomore QB in a worse situation. I still believe that the Nagy-less version of Trubisky can at least oust a season similar to his 2018 season.

*Diontae Johnson open deep*

Big Ben: pic.twitter.com/RN69nUpLc3
— Justin (@Justin_14P) October 5, 2021

I actually believe there is a strong chance that Trubisky is the 2023 starter. It may seem sexy to say Trubisky is the “mentor” but he is only 27 (28 in August) at this moment. It should also be noted that Pickett doesn’t appear to have an impressive ceiling.

Johnson will not only be heavily targeted (perhaps a bit less than 2021), but he will excel in the deep-passing game with his new QB. I understand that the former Steelers QB won two Super Bowls and somehow receives a legacy comparison to Aaron Rodgers, but I believe that Johnson will continue to climb the ladder with a more explosive QB-mate in 2022. Trust in Johnson (and his contract year) and his long-term outlook as a Steeler in the JuJu-less offense, as the <s>Pickett </s>Trubisky-Johnson connection should thrive.

Latest Steelers QB outlook

By: Jake Rajala

The Pittsburgh Steelers have officially begun their quarterback competition in the post-Ben Roethlisberger era. The Steelers inked the wiser quarterback Mitchell Trubisky to a $14.285 million dollar deal and they proceeded to draft former Pitt QB Kenny Pickett 20th overall in the NFL Draft. Last but not least (yet), Mason Rudolph is familiar with the scheme and he will surely aim to prove he is capable of being the heir to Big Ben.

The Mike Tomlin call to Kenny Pickett #Steelers #NFL pic.twitter.com/cIZxUaF1Jl
— Steelers Depot 7?

RIP to Dwayne Haskins, who tragically passed away on April 9th, 2022.

The Steelers may not have their legendary signal-caller QB that won two Super Bowl rings but they will certainly have a QB performance that’s an upgrade over the 2021 version of Big Ben. Outside of Trubisky “having a growth session like Bruce Wayne in Batman Begins” as the QB2 in Buffalo, he was a modest signal-caller with a lesser talented Bears offense in 2020. He threw 16 touchdowns, 2,055 passing yds, and unveiled a 6-3 record as a Bear in his last season in Chi-town. Of course, he would be crowned the NVP, as well.

??????? ??, ???? | ?

Mitchell Trubisky wins the NVP! pic.twitter.com/EkqExl1TS7
— This Day in Chicago Sports (@ChiSportsDay) January 10, 2022

Trubisky will be a strong candidate to start given his combination of experience and arm talent. If he could improve his turnover habits and have a similar career turnaround as Jameis Winston (5-2 in 2021), he might look impressive with the Steelers weapons in pre-season.

The Pittsburgh royalty Kenny Pickett was the most NFL-ready rookie QB in the 2022 draft class and Tomlin stated that it was an easy decision to draft Pickett. Furthermore, Tomlin has stated that Pickett could honestly have a chance to start in Week 1. The NFL world knows that Pickett possesses nice arm talent, but it’s seen among many NFL scouts that he doesn’t have overwhelming upside. He could still be able to utilize the deep-speed of Chase Claypool and Diontae Johnson shortly after putting on his Steelers jersey.

Kenny Pickett highlights, n'at@kennypickett10 | @Pitt_FB pic.twitter.com/GZ4gLQmXIy
— Pittsburgh Steelers (@steelers) April 29, 2022

The Steelers veteran QB Mason Rudolph will face an uphill battle to be the starting QB, to say the least. I wouldn’t expect Rudolph to start unless “Trubisky had TO issues/or was injured and Pickett isn’t able to grasp the playbook” well enough.

It isn’t clear which QB will start for the Steelers, but the Steelers nation is aware that an intense, exciting QB battle is on the horizon. Regardless of the QB’s jersey number, they should be a “capable game manager” in the Steelers offense featuring Najee Harris, Johnson, and Claypool at a minimum standard. Perhaps Pickett will even feel the hometown pressure/juice and quickly rise to become a star for the talented Steelers team.

By: Jake Rajala

The Pittsburgh Steelers have a special long-term wide receiver in Chase Claypool. The 23-year-old from Abbotsford, Canada has already stated that he doesn’t care who his starting quarterback is, as he’s still fully prepared to be a reliable weapon for any QB in many seasons to come.

It’s Sunday, so that means we’re going to be tweeting Chase Claypool highlights all day

SECOND touchdown of the day for Mapletron ? pic.twitter.com/Y8r2BMazS3
— Barstool Irish (@BarstoolIrish) October 11, 2020

Claypool has been quite a slightly effective chess piece for the Steelers offense in his two seasons thus far. In 2020, he recorded 62 receptions (109 targets), 873 yds, and 9 touchdowns. After his rookie season, he notched 59 receptions and 860 yards.

Claypool will definitely have an increased role in the JuJu Smith-less offense in Pittsburgh. Diontae Johnson was a monster in 2021 (107/1,161/8), but Claypool will certainly attract his fair share of targets. He should also really help replace JuJu’s red-zone presence (9 touchdowns in 2020). I expect Mitchell Trubisky to be the starter in 2022 and he should be an upgrade over the 2021 version of Big Ben, too.

Trubisky may not be a true MVP-caliber QB, but he did help his mediocre Bears offense reach the playoffs in 2020. He reached the Pro Bowl in 2018 and I believe he could be an “a prime Andy Dalton” or “prime Matt Schaub” for the Steelers for a couple of seasons. If Pickett is groomed as the QB2 at the start, he should soon be the starting QB.

Highest win pct since 2018 among active QB

Patrick Mahomes .790 (49-13)
Lamar Jackson .755 (37-12)
Aaron Rodgers .711 (45-18-1)
Mitchell Trubisky .658 (25-13)

*min 1000 pass attempts pic.twitter.com/Rnl4SMWPHx
— NFL on CBS ?

I honestly am a big fan of Chase Chase Claypool’s outlook. His WR partner in Johnson is ranked as the 14th ranked WR in dynasty PPR via Fantasy Pros, while he is cemented as the 35th best WR. I love the floor for Claypool, as he should be very involved and he could really be a secret superstar. If Pickett can be the “next Big Ben”, Claypool could have a tremendous career, to say the least. It’s time to buy the WR that was often compared to Calvin Johnson Jr. as a draft prospect.

The 2022 Pittsburgh Steelers 7 round mock draft post wildcard playoff game

By: Jake Rajala

The Pittsburgh Steelers came out guns blazing against the mighty Kansas City Chiefs in the wildcard playoff game. Unfortunately, the T.J. Watt-led defense eventually broke against the “Zeus from Real Steel” like Chiefs offense. The Steelers defense surrendered 21 points in the second quarter, 14 points in the third quarter, and another touchdown in the fourth quarter.

Despite the disappointing postseason loss, it’s safe to say the Steelers outperformed their expectations in the 2021-2022 season. It was another winning season in the books for Mike Tomlin and Ben Roethlisberger. As widely enunciated, Tomlin and Big Ben have never suffered a losing season in their careers together.

So, the offseason is officially underway for the Steelers. The grand focus is unequivocally the 2022 draft. With that said, which direction could the Steelers go in the draft? Well, let’s see what the Big Ben-less Steelers do in this 2022 Pittsburgh Steelers 7 round mock draft.

If this is the end, what a career it was for Big Ben. pic.twitter.com/7R5r8eLnII
— NFL on CBS ? (@NFLonCBS) January 17, 2022

Round 1, Matt Corral – QB – Ole Miss

The Steelers have the firepower to “win now” in the AFC. It’s even worth noting that the Steelers still made the playoffs in a season where Big Ben threw his fewest touchdowns in a 16 game season (22) since his full slate of games in 2008.

Corral can step in and likely be a sure-fire upgrade over Big Ben’s previous production in two seasons at worst. The former Ole Miss QB should have JuJu Smith Schuster, who said he wants to be a Steeler for life. In addition to JuJu, Chase Claypool and Diontae Johnson are talented wideouts that are 25 years and younger. It would make sense if Claypool stays over Johnson long-term with that said. Still, Corral would truly have potent weapons to grow with and he could be able to put up similar numbers as Chargers QB Justin Herbert in the Steelers offensive attack.

The Steelers have stated that Mason Rudolph and Dwayne Haskins will compete for the starting gig, but I wouldn’t be surprised if Tomlin got more heart-eyed for Corral as the 2022 draft approaches. Tomlin did state that he wants a “mobile” QB to be the next face of the franchise. It would make a heap of sense if Corral is that guy as he fits the mold. Corral can clock a 4.65 40 time and he has a better arm to match it. Whether or not Corral is added to the mix, I’d be happy to see Marcus Mariota on a short contract in Pittsburgh, as well.

The Houston Texans failed to capitalize off J.J. Watt’s Hall of Fame talent in Texas. Mike Tomlin can’t allow the Steelers to let the 27-year-old T.J. Watt’s game-wrecking ability continue to go to waste in the AFC playoffs.

I don’t believe the Saints or Vikings will strike with selecting Corrall. Although, the Steelers should trade up several spots to safely land Corral.

https://twitter.com/BenGlassmireNFL/status/1481110986639613953?s=20

Round 2, Josh Jobe – CB – Alabama

The stud CB from Alabama, Josh Jobe, would be the perfect replacement for the veteran Joe Haden. The long-time “Cleveland Brown” Joe Haden has already sent a farewell to the Steelers nation.

The former starter across from Patrick Surtain and preseason All American unfortunately suffered a playoff injury that forced an early exit, but he will be more than ready for training camp in 2022. Jobe holds a very similar skillet to Haden, as well. They are both physical, big man-to-man corners. Jobe can nicely help the young star Minkah Fitzpatrick complement Watt and Heyward on the defense. Jobe recorded two picks, a sack, and a lot of quiet matchups in 2021.

Jobe is projected to be a late second to early third-round pick. He would fall in the perfect range to be the Steelers second-round pick. The selection of Jobe could make fans forget about “Artie Burns” sooner than thought.

Round 3, Zion Nelson – OT – Miami

It would be a nice vision for Tomlin to eye Matt Corral and Zion Nelson in the 2022 draft. Nelson wasn’t just one of the top offensive linemen in 2020, but his potential is also through the roof. The Steelers Achilles heel starts at LT and it’s not an understatement to say they need help. The rook Dan Moore Jr. stepped in to play last season, but he didn’t fill in well. He was picked on against Myles Garrett early on in the season as he routinely allowed Garrett to pressure and sack the QB.

If the Steelers want a shiny new QB in Corral, Russell Wilson, or even Mason Rudolph, they will need to do a better job protecting the mysterious QB than Big Ben in recent memory.

Zion Nelson should be a 2022 third-round pick and he would fit quite well on the blindside for potentially Matt Corrall. The Steelers may need to get creative again by trading up for Nelson, but it would be worth it as he really can be the reliable LT for the next decade. If the Steelers need to cough up a couple of draft picks, the 2022 draft may be the best draft to do it out of any draft in the next few years. If they have a nice picture of their future WR situation, it would be wise to trade the likes of Diontae Johnson for an early 2022 pick.

74 YARDS!!

Round 4, Justyn Ross – WR – Clemson

The Clemson WR Justyn Ross is a gifted profile, but he’s another profile that’s been haunted by the injury bug. He’s projected to be a second – fourth-round player in the past year, but his stock has continued to dip. He should be a late third-round to late fourth-round pick at this day in age. He’s been projected to be selected by the Baltimore Ravens in the fourth round by Ebony bird. I’d love to see him be a member of the AFC North, but with the Steelers.

Ross wasn’t the same caliber of WR as former Clemson WR Sammy Watkins, but he was once a 1,000 yard WR in 2018 and a wideout that hauled in 17 touchdowns across 2018 and 2019. Although, he missed three games in 2021 and he underwent foot surgery. It seems unlikely that teams see enough of the reward in the risk to make him a third or second-round pick in 2022.

It’s very unlikely that the Steelers retain each WR in the big three they showcase (JuJu, Diontae, Chase). As mentioned, the Steelers could deal Diontae in 2022 rather than let him walk in 2023. Ross would an ideal replacement for Dionate, the perfect WR steal, and a 6’4 big body WR addition to their offense. If Rudolph is the QB, he can have the arm talent to hit Ross in any section of the field.

Round 5, Trade for Saints C/G Cesar Ruiz

The Steelers need more juice on the interior of their offensive line. It would be wise to trade for a young, somewhat modest, interior offensive lineman that can start at guard or center. It’s been made very clear that LG Kendrick Green should walk the plank for his 2021 performance. The Steelers might just be able to find a diamond in the rough from the “always busy” Mickey Loomis and New Orleans Saints.

The Saints could look to find an upgrade at center, especially if they obtain Russell Wilson. Ruiz was a 2020 first-round pick, but he hasn’t quite taken off. He would still be an upgrade over Green at guard and potentially even start at the center long term. The former Michigan Wolverine can be a sturdy run blocker at least. That would help second-year RB Najee Harris elevate his performance.

Still early, but the "breakout" QB prospect of 2021 looks like Stanford's Tanner McKee pic.twitter.com/W8Nkr656U0
— Mike Renner (@mikerenner_) September 22, 2021

Round 6, Tanner McKee – QB – Stanford

The Stanford signal-caller is a big arm, yet sharp QB. He’s the perfect value pick for the Steelers in the fifth round – assuming he doesn’t stay for another CFB season. McKee would be a quality, competitive QB2.

The 6’6 QB that looks like either of the “Winklevoss twins” was an All Pac 12 honorable mention in 2021. He showed his all-around talent by showcasing a 138.7 passer rating.

Here are a few interesting facts about McKee, as well. He is actually 31 years old, he spent two years on a Church mission when he was 21 years old, and he beat cancer at 16 years old! McKee could be the Steelers backup QB in 2022 and the wise Steelers QB coach in 2023!

Round 7, Sevyn Banks – CB – Ohio State

The reinforcements in the secondary have arrived. Sevyn Banks is another physical, “beat you at the line of scrimmage” CB from Ohio State. Banks was once rumored to go first overall in the 2022 draft. Well, it’s clear that he fell off a cliff in 2021 and he will be hoping that any team will take a chance on him in the 2022 draft. I’d expect the right culture with a need at CB could take a chance on him. Would it be a surprise if Tomlin, who took a chance on Dwayne Haskins, decided to take a chance on Banks? It would make too much sense for the Steelers to pick Banks at this point in the draft.

The 2021 Steelers team is still a real Super Bowl contender

By: Jeremy Trottier

The Pittsburgh Steelers are in a relatively interesting position after the 2020-2021 season. Odds are Ben Roethlisberger will retire after this season, based on his previous injuries as well as his age and contract. After a first round exit in last season’s playoffs, they likely will be trying to go all in on this season to make a push to give big Ben a proper sendoff. In this article, I will be going over three reasons as to why the Pittsburgh Steelers are still contending for a Super Bowl in the 2021-2022 season.

"I'm tired, boss."

–@JHarrison9292 to Coach Tomlin after his Super Bowl pick 6. ? @Steelers pic.twitter.com/MLc4ezUbgc
— NFL Films (@NFLFilms) September 22, 2021

Top Defense in the League

One of the biggest selling points for the Steelers as of the last few seasons is how phenomenal their defense has continually been. In 2020 they finished with the best DVOA (Defense-adjusted Value Over Average), at a total of -20.2% (DVOA has a lowest = best standard). This was 1.2% ahead of second place which was New Orleans at -19.0%. Another stat that is impressive towards this notion is they only gave up the third least amount of yards over the course of the regular season, at 4,893 yards (20 behind 2nd place).

They also ended up tied for first in most interceptions taken away from opponents at 18 (tied with New Orleans, Miami, and New England). Overall, this defense is one of the if not the best currently in the NFL, which hugely helps the Steelers chances at making a run for the deep playoffs. As we saw this season, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers were able to succeed so much due to an extremely potent defense, alongside a quality offense.

Skill Position Talent

The Steelers have really improved their skill positions in the last few seasons, with additions like Najee Harris, Chase Claypool, Pat Freiermuth, Eric Ebron, and more in the past few offseasons. Adding these players on top of others like Juju Smith-Schuster, Diontae Johnson, and James Washington allow them to really give Ben Roethlisberger a chance to just get the ball to playmakers and let them do the work.

The addition of Najee Harris cannot be overlooked, despite the Steelers need for IOL. Najee is an extremely talented back based on what we all saw at the college level from him, and if he can continue this at the NFL level, the Steelers should have their new elite playmaker. Pat Freiermuth is also a very solid pickup, ranked by most as the number two tight end in the class his receiving abilities add to an already stout passing attack.

The Offensive Line Additions

One of the biggest gaps people have been pointing to on this Steelers roster is the offensive line, as they lost a lot of their starters this offseason. With that said, they have the players along this line to hold up when needed. Going from left to right, they have at LT presumably Zach Banner, who despite only playing 59 snaps in 2020, allowed zero sacks and had no penalties. He played in 14 games only a season ago as well for the Cleveland Browns, so he has some experience.

At left guard they have Trai Turner, probably the most solidified and high quality member of the line, has started 89 of 93 games he has played in, and has been a very solid member of the teams he has played for so far. At C, presumably the sophomore from Alabama will get the start in J.C. Hassenauer, who despite being an UDFA, got four starts in his 2020 rookie debut and gave up no sacks in all his snaps. He does need to work on penalties, as he had five in his four starts, but that is able to be worked on. Another sophomore at LG is Kevin Dotson, the 6’4” 321 pound monster out of University of Louisiana at Lafayette. A 4th round pick in the 2020 NFL Draft, he also got 4 starts in 13 games, allowing 0 sacks and only having three penalties, as well as a 66.2 PFF grade, which despite not being the be all end all of how good a player is, it has a lot of good factors going into it. Finally, at RT, Chukwuma Okorafor, one of my personal favorites to really show up in 2021. At 6’6” 320 pounds, his frame is absolutely perfect to be a tackle, and he has an innate ability to anchor down and stop rushers in their tracks. This will be huge for Najee Harris as a gap rusher, because Okorafor will be able to create those gaps for him.

Where does Big Ben stand in the NFC North?

By: Reese Nasser

Ben Roethlisberger has been doing this football thing for a long time now, and at a very high level. He has achieved nearly every accolade possible and in his now 18th season, Roethlisberger will look to prove that he is still capable of playing and making an impact. He has played in 233 games for the Pittsburgh Steelers and has led them to two super bowl victories.

But as time has progressed, a new wave of quarterbacks have arrived in the AFC West. Lamar Jackson of the Baltimore Ravens, Baker Mayfield of the Cleveland Browns, and Joe Burrow of the Cincinnati Bengals are all fighting for the top spot in the division. But is it Roethlisberger’s to lose? Where does he rank among the four quarterbacks within his division? Let’s take a look?

4. Joe Burrow, Cincinnati Bengals

The second-year pro will have a lot to prove this season. But, after coming off of a torn ACL in his rookie season and only appearing just 10 games, he hasn’t proven to be better than any other quarterback within his division just yet.

Burrow did show real promise in his rookie season and can’t be discounted due to injury. The pace that he was on during his rookie season would have been the greatest in Bengals history for a first-year quarterback.

Joe Burrow was in the midst of something special last season before his injury…

Burrow’s 2020 Pace – Bengals Rookie Rank

422 Completions – 1st
4,301 Pass Yds – 1st
5 300+ Yd Games – 1st
21 Pass TDs – 1st

Bengals fans gotta be hyped to see Burrow in 2021! pic.twitter.com/aVxtgHSaeu
— CBS Sports HQ (@CBSSportsHQ) May 25, 2021

He has also proven to be a true leader for this Bengals team. He was a captain by week one and had the entire team supporting him all throughout his rookie season.

Joe Burrow says it was important for the rest of the Bengals to see him take part in OTAs even though his knee isn’t at full strength yet (85 percent).

Every member of the Bengals was there on Day 1.

Cincy got a leader. pic.twitter.com/szLjfuPctx
— B/R Gridiron (@brgridiron) May 25, 2021

With a strong second-year, Burrow should and will rise to a higher spot than fourth best in the division.

3. Ben Roethlisberger, Pittsburgh Steelers

The 39-year old quarterback threw for 26 touchdowns but also had 15 turnovers. The season also started out very well for the team as a whole as Big Ben led them 11 straight wins.

Ben Roethlisberger will not go down until he’s throwing touchdowns.@TeamJuJu snags this one. (Via @NFL) pic.twitter.com/OWYqqYN6IZ
— Sunday Night Football on NBC (@SNFonNBC) November 15, 2020

But as the season reached the end, the Steelers team began to look much different. Over the last four games, Roethlisberger threw for eight touchdowns but also added four interceptions.

In the Steelers only postseason game, Big Ben was outdueled by the younger Browns quarterback Baker Mayfield. Big Ben threw four touchdowns but also four interceptions. While it may not have been an age issue, Big Ben did look different at points this season.

Ben Roethlisberger's yards per attempt by season
? 2016: 7.2
? 2017: 7.2
? 2018: 7.3
? 2020: 6.0 pic.twitter.com/skutCXU1nb
— PFF (@PFF) February 19, 2021

The Steelers constructed the offense to be both faster and shorter. While it worked, it somewhat eliminated the options on offense. This puts Big Ben as the third best quarterback in this division.

2. Baker Mayfield, Cleveland Browns

Baker Mayfield proved to be a strong leader for this Cleveland Browns team. He played consistently throughout much of the season and was responsible for 27 total touchdowns. His biggest issue was turnovers but over the last nine regular season games, he threw only one interception.

The turn around that he made after week nine is worth noting. He looked like a completely different quarterback when he was on the field and his control of the team was clear.

PFF Grade since Week 9:
? Baker Mayfield – 90.5
?

In the wild card round of the playoffs, Mayfield threw three touchdowns in a strong showing against the Steelers. He also played a valiant game against the Kansas City Chiefs that ended in a 22-17 loss.

Baker will look to have a big 2021 season and a super bowl will be on the mind of everyone in the Browns organization. He has proven to not only be a top quarterback in the AFC West but also within the entire NFL.

1. Lamar Jackson. Baltimore Ravens

The 2019 MVP comes in as the #1 quarterback in the AFC West. Jackson has proved to be a top quarterback in the NFL and has consistently led the Baltimore Ravens to success.

In 2020, Jackson and the Ravens had an 11-5 regular season. Their season came to an end in the divisional round to the Buffalo Bills. This was one of the few games where Jackson appeared average and he and the rest of the Ravens struggled with a strong Bills team.

Throughout the 2020 season, Jackson showed that 2019 was no fluke. He threw for 26 touchdowns and 2,757 yards. He also added another seven touchdowns on the ground and ran for over 1,000 yards.

He led the division in touchdowns and achieved this success while having a receiving core that ranked near the bottom of the league.

Now that the Ravens added two strong receivers in the draft, Rashod Bateman and Tylan Wallace, you can expect to see an even bigger season out of Lamar in 2021. His potential, along with the rest of the Ravens, could be unmatched.

Big Ben has had a long and successful career but younger quarterbacks are slowly starting to catch up and surpass. While 2021 could be a resurgence, one last push, he is still the third best quarterback in this division, at least for now.

How will the Steelers passing offense help the veteran QB?

By: Dave Stewart

Though it started as a season they would never forget, most of the Pittsburgh Steelers would likely be happy to put the 2020 season out of their mind. A tale of two seasons, the Steelers had their franchise’s all-time best start when they won their first 11 consecutive games. They promptly followed it up by losing five of their next six, including a demoralizing beating against Cleveland in the playoffs. So, what happened?

When everything was going so right, how did it all come crashing down? Was it the run game? Could it have been the passing game? Was it due to unimaginative play calling? Did the defense drop off? In a word, yes. All of the above are true to varying extents.

The strength of the team was the defense. During the year, they allowed 305.8 yards per game. That figure was good enough to place third in the league. However, they allowed more than 310 yards in four of five losses. In each of their final six games, they gave up more than the 19.5 points they averaged on the year.

Of course, these numbers could be attributed to the offense’s inability to control the clock and keep the defense off the field. During their win streak, the Steelers had 32:18 average possession time. The number dipped to 28:24 per game from week 13 onward. It makes sense that the defense would give up more yards and points when they are on the field longer. The Steelers’ last-place run game was no assistance to that end. While they averaged a league-low 84.4 rushing yards per game, during the final six games of the year, their run production dropped either further to a paltry 52 yards per contest. Pittsburgh never had more than five first downs on the ground in any of the final six games. Unable to run the ball effectively, the Steelers began to rely even more on the pass as the season progressed. Without the threat of a running game, defenses were not afraid to stack the box against the Steelers.

Those players were then also in a position to stop the Steelers’ quick passing game. Pittsburgh averaged 6.3 yards per pass attempt. Only two NFL teams averaged fewer. Between the regular season and the wild card game, Roethlisberger threw 14 interceptions with nine of those coming in the final six games. Not only were the Steelers unable to move the ball, but they also struggled to protect it, as well. Now that the problem is laid on the table, how can the Steelers address it? Heading into 2021, the Steelers lost more offensive linemen than they replaced, Roethlisberger is a year older, and, with all due respect to Pat Freiermuth, the team has failed to add any pass catchers of consequence. The solution boils down to scheme.

Matt Canada has been installed as the team’s new offensive coordinator. He brings with him a wealth of experience, albeit at the college level, having served as offensive coordinator at nine different schools throughout his career. Whatever may be said about Canada’s offense, it will not be unimaginative. He has a tendency to employ a lot of motion pre-snap and uses it effectively to keep the defense off-balance.

Canada’s affinity for passing downfield, coupled with his utilization of play-action may loosen up the defensive fronts that the Steelers are facing. As long as Najee Harris is capable of posing a threat as a ball carrier, this will open up space for the entire offense to operate. Restoring balance to the offense should allow the receivers to work downfield more often and improve upon their 6.3 yards per pass attempt.

Chase Claypool led the team with 7.7 yards per target. In order to accumulate more yards, touchdowns, wins, and, of course, fantasy production, those numbers must be improved upon. Fortunately for Pittsburgh, their top three wide receivers are all capable of stretching the field at times. Adding James Washington to the mix, along with tight ends, Eric Ebron and Freiermuth stand to bolster the overall production for the passing game. Should Harris, who caught 43 passes in his senior year at Alabama, emerge as a pass catcher out of the backfield, Pittsburgh will improve the ways they can attack a defense.

Should this all come to fruition, the onus will then be on Roethlisberger to stay healthy and protect the football. Up against the NFL’s toughest 2021 schedule, the game script will afford Roethlisberger to approach and potentially eclipse 600 pass attempts for the fourth time in his career.
