Which Broncos shined in the pre-season?

By: Steven Johnson

This preseason, the Denver Broncos had plenty of young standout players shine in their limited action. This article will look at three of the players that may have secured a roster spot based on their breakout performance this preseason.

1. WR-Trinity Benson

Getting the obvious out of the way early, Trinity Benson was a superstar. Playing in all three games as a receiver and a returner for the team, Benson locked himself into a roster spot. He finished the preseason with 80 yards and 2 touchdowns on eight catches. While this stat line isn’t eye-popping, in the preseason with limited reps, it shows Benson as a reliable target. Only a rookie this season, Benson showed a connection with every quarterback at some point and also handled return duties. Special teams coach Tom McMahon spoke highly of Benson as well, suggesting if nothing else he could be kept on for special team duties. In a deep wide receiver room this season, Benson was able to make his name stand out beside the likes of Jerry Jeudy and K.J Hamler. Benson will be a good rotational piece for the Broncos as Hamler, Jeudy and Courtland Sutton need breaks and the season wears on player’s bodies. With how many receivers the Broncos have kept in the past, and Benson being a standout behind the top four or so receivers in front of him, it would be hard to imagine him not having playtime throughout the regular season.

#Broncos WR Trinity Benson gets his second TD of the game. This one comes from Teddy Bridgewater.pic.twitter.com/HCDu8O01Bf
— NFL Unlimited (@NFLUnlimited) August 14, 2021

2. OLB- Jonathon Cooper

Cooper was a wrecking ball this preseason in place of starters. Cooper enjoyed snaps While Von Miller was eased into action and Bradley Chubb and Malik Reed took limited reps. Cooper finished his preseason action with five solo tackles, one forced fumble, and one sack in three games. Coach Vic Fangio has spoken out about Cooper himself after Denver’s second preseason game. Fangio told the media “You know, we’re expecting him to be a rotational guy for us behind Bradley and Von, and hopefully, he did some good in the special team because we’re going to need him there.”

While praise for Cooper and seemingly a nod to a roster spot, this was only after the team’s second preseason game. Cooper went out the next week and continued to impress, only building on the hype the coaches have seemingly put around him. With his rookie season underway, it seems as if Cooper will enjoy plenty of rotational play behind Miller and Chubb for this fearsome Broncos defense this season. With both rushers previously missing time due to injury, it would be smart for the Broncos to invest in a young, explosive pass rusher like Cooper to have to wait in the wings. With how the Denver defensive line tends to rotate as well, one can expect Cooper to have an impact at some point in most games this season.

The #Broncos have a really good gem in DE Jonathon Cooper. He’s going to be a mainstay on their defensive line for years to come. pic.twitter.com/wOpLvHHDuq
— Devin Jackson (@RealD_Jackson) August 29, 2021

3. TE- Eric Saubert

While the tight end room is considered relatively solid with the return of a healthy Noah Fant and Albert Okwuegbunam, Eric Saubert may have carved himself a role with the Broncos after a solid preseason outing. Unlike the others, Saubert has been in the league and has spent time on NFL rosters before. Playing for the Falcons, Bears, and Jaguars, Saubert knows what it takes to make it as a tight end in the NFL. While not having much production with teams before, Saubert had himself an impressive preseason with the Broncos. Providing utility on special teams and blocking on the line, Saubert is emerging as a utility tight end. His stats of five catches for 74 yards throughout the preseason shows a big, safe target who isn’t afraid to get in the trenches and block as well. I believe that his usefulness in the special teams game and his emergence as a target for the Denver quarterbacks may see him sneak onto the final roster this season. One last thing that may push the balance in Saubert’s favor is the injury history of the other Bronco tight ends coming into this season. If something were to happen, Saubert could step in immediately to try and fill the hole left.

Eric Saubert splitting tacklers.@Broncos | #LARvsDEN pic.twitter.com/6lgWPG6gFm
— NFL (@NFL) August 29, 2021

This preseason, the Bronco players showcased the talent and spirit to compete across all three of their games. While many stood out, not all will find a space on the roster come final cutdown day. While unfortunate, it is good to see so many young and experienced players alike making the most of the opportunities to try and find themselves a spot on an NFL-caliber team. The likes of rookies such as Benson and Cooper took their chance and ran with it, while those vets such as Saubert came in with a willingness to compete and find a role that fits the team they are playing for. The competition of preseason football may not be as exciting for fans as the regular season but the intensity and the opportunity to find gems is equal to if not greater than any other time in football.

By: Jordan Anders

The Denver Broncos have not had a winning record since they won Super Bowl 50 back in the 2015-2016 season. Since then, they have only tied for second in the AFC West standings with a 7-9 record in 2019. In the last five seasons, the Broncos have gone through nine starting quarterbacks, ten if you include last season where running back Phillip Lindsay started at quarterback against the Saints. Needless to say, the Broncos have struggled to find that missing piece to get the team back into a winning record.

With the Broncos putting faith in quarterback Drew Lock this season, in only his third year, it’s hard to say where Drew can take this team. The hope is he can lead the Broncos to the post-season for the first time in 5 years. This year would be the year to do that, the Broncos this next season have one of the easiest schedules, with only four teams ahead of them. Although the Broncos have one of the easiest schedules, they’ll be playing 20 games in total this regular season, three in pre-season, and 17 in regular-season games.

On top of that, their division rivals, the Kansas City Chiefs have won the division the last five seasons and will likely win it again, and the Chargers and quarterback Justin Herbert aren’t looking too bad after last season and will only continue to get better. We went 1-1 with the Raiders and Chargers last season and the Broncos are definitely looking for a season sweep on both. If the Broncos want to accomplish this, a winning record, and have a chance to make it to the playoffs, they’ll have to put in the work.

Broncos’ ceiling

With a load of weapons in the Broncos offense and a defense similar to the 2015 “No Fly Zone” defense, the Broncos could most definitely go 12-5. The Baltimore Ravens, Pittsburgh Steelers, Cleveland Browns, and Kansas City Chiefs will be the Broncos’ biggest threats going into this next season.

The Broncos’ first three games are against the New York Giants, Jacksonville Jaguars, and New York Jets, these first three games will set the tone for the remainder of the season. The Broncos could easily go 3-0, but with Drew Lock throwing only 16 touchdowns last season with 15 interceptions, it’s hard to pinpoint where the Broncos will fall.

Drew Lock has been putting in lots of work this offseason so far, there’s the question that we can make the jump to lead the team, it’s when.

Broncos’ floor

The Broncos have a well-rounded team and without a doubt one of the best secondaries in the league. If the offensive side of the ball falls short, the defense will have to carry. Yet the defense side of the ball can only take you so far.

The floor for the Broncos this season would be 4-13. The Detroit Lions, Philadelphia Eagles, Jets, and Jaguars, are the easiest wins on the schedule this season, and if the Broncos can’t make it past these teams it’s gonna be a rough season. The Chargers took massive strides

This is a worst-case scenario besides losing every game but the team is too talented and skilled to lose 17 games. As stated earlier the pre-season games and the first three games into the regular season will set show us how the rest of the season will likely go.

TE Noah Fant will have a career year in 2021

By: Jordan Anders

Last season, Broncos safety Justin Simmons and linebacker Bradley Chubb were named to their first Pro Bowl. Unfortunately due to Covid-19 protocols the events and game were called off this year. There are plans for the 2022 Pro Bowl to be played next year at Allegiant Stadium in Las Vegas, date and time yet to be announced. With the season being extended to 17 games, there’s a good chance we can see some new Broncos players named to their first Pro Bowl.

Noah Fant: 4.50
Albert Okwuegbunam: 4.49

The Broncos don't lack speed at the TE position. https://t.co/cjxdDbjD4J
— Aric DiLalla (@AricDiLalla) March 31, 2021

1.Garett Bolles

All Broncos fans would agree that Garett Bolles was robbed this year being named to his first Pro Bowl. Bolles took a huge leap last season especially with the amount of holding calls he got compared to his first few years.

This big leap got Bolles a 4-year, $68,000,000 contract extension with the Broncos, which includes a $20,000,000 signing bonus and $38,000,000 guaranteed. During the 2020 season, Bolles played 1015 offensive snaps, had zero sacks allowed, and only had 7 penalties.

Comparing that to his 2019 season, he played 1013 offensive snaps, with 4 sacks allowed, and 17 penalties. His overall player grade in 2019 was 76.1 and jumped to 90.6 in 2020. There’s no doubt in my mind Garett Bolles has the ability to be named to his first Pro Bowl this next season with the progress he has made the last four years.

2. Shelby Harris

The Broncos defense will be deadly this next season and there’s no denying that. With Von Miller coming back, the best safety duo in the league Justin Simmons and Kareem Jackson back, and star cornerbacks Kyle Fuller and Bryce Callahan, the Broncos will have a shiny defense to combat Patrick Mahomes.

A key piece to this Broncos defense however has been Shelby Harris. Harris last season had 19 tackles, 5 assists, 3 sacks, and 1 forced fumble with an overall grade of 88.3. This year, Harris also signed a contract extension with the Broncos for 3 years $27,000,000 with a $9,000,000 signing bonus. With this stability, Shelby Harris has the potential to make a jump further than his stats in 2019 and make his first Pro Bowl.

3. Noah Fant

In his two seasons with the Broncos since being drafted in 2019, Noah Fant has made big jumps between his “freshman and sophomore seasons”. Last season Fant had 673 receiving yards on 62 receptions and 3 touchdowns.

If Broncos (most likely) starting quarterback Drew Lock and Noah Fant can work more on connecting this off-season, I see Noah Fant taking a big jump with his ability just like he has done the last two seasons. Fant becomes an unrestricted free agent in 2023 so this year is the perfect year for him to capture his draft worth and make a Pro Bowl as a Bronco.
