This is not an overreaction from last week’s blowout to the Buffalo Bills. This is a four year body of work of mediocrity with the Redskins and now Commanders. Ron Rivera was hired in 2019 to take over a struggling Redskins team who needed some tough nose leadership. Rivera was a distinguished linebacker for the Chicago Bears and a well known figure throughout the league. He was hired to lead this team to the Super Bowl and change the culture in Washington. But, here we are 4 years letter no better than we were 4 years ago. Ron’s combined record is 24-28-1 in those years. Put simply, that is unacceptable. He’s had time to change things but we haven’t really made any progress.

The Commanders don’t want to be known as a .500 team, they want to be known as the team to beat the NFC East. Ron has had chances to pick up good players in the draft, particularly a talented young QB. He has failed to do that, instead he has went after free agents such as Alex Smith and Carson Wentz, who weren’t the answer. Then we picked up Sam Howell in the 2022 draft. Sam has showed flashes of hope and then flashes of mediocrity. We do have to remember he is a young quarterback with only four starts.

As of right now the Commanders are 2-1, but don’t be deceived by that winning record. They could of easily lost the first game, and then had to storm back from 21-3 to beat a bad Denver Broncos team. This team has the makeup of being another .500 team this year. They could surprise us this week and beat the Eagles, just like they did last year. But if we were to lose by another blowout, I think we should consider firing both coaches. They have too much talent on both sides of the ball to consistently be mediocre.

Why not fire Rivera and put Eric Bieniemy in charge to see what he can do? If you do that, Jack Del Rio, who has four 1st round draft picks on the defensive line, needs to go too. There’s no reason their defense should not be dominant, and one of the best in the league. In addition, now would be a good time because they have a new owner and they can have that fresh start and build for the future. Typically, coaches are fired based on there record for the year. In this case, depending on how the Commanders do against the Eagles, I believe now is the time.

Week 3 was filled will crazy performances and upsets. Let’s break down who is trending up and who is trending down.

Stock Down

New York Jets – Zach Wilson is clearly not the answer at QB for the Jets. But if you ask Robert Saleh, he’s the best option they have. Is he really the best option? I think at this point anybody is better than Zach Wilson, to include Tom Brady or Carson Wentz.

Washington Commanders – Just when you thought the offense was on track and Eric Bieniemy was a genius, the Commander took three steps back. The biggest issue is their offensive line who can’t block anybody. In my opinion, there recipe for success is the run game first, solid D, and then everything else after that. The defense is overrated and after three games really haven’t done anything. We saw this coming though right? The Commanders could easily be 0-3 right if it weren’t for a few plays that went their way. We do have to remember that their QB, basically a rookie, has only started in four games.

Denver Broncos – 70 points, Yes 70 points given up against the Dolphins defense. Does a team even have that many possessions for that to happen? Well in this game the answer is yes. This is totally uncalled for and it’s disaster time in Denver.

Stock Up

Miami Dolphins – Can anybody beat the high flying Dolphins? Right now the answer is NO. But we’re only three games in so we shouldn’t overreact too much. We all know one injury and things can change very quickly. There shooting on all cylinders and will be tough to beat. I am looking forward to the matchup with the Bills.

Buffalo Bills – When the Bills lost to the Zach Wilson led Jets in week 1, some were worried. I was not as I know the creme always rises to the top. They played a lackluster Commanders team and had 19 sacks. On the other side of the ball, Josh Allen and Stefon Diggs appear to have left off where they were last year. Teams know where the ball is going, and still can’t stop that duo, similar to the Mahomes/Kelce connection in Kansas City.

Kansas City Chiefs – Maybe Taylor Swift in the suite helped the Chiefs and Travis Kelce this weekend. Whatever happened, they appear to be just fine. We should expect them to be where they should be at the end of the season.

Terry McLaurin AKA “Scary Terry” has been somewhat undervalued/underrated in fantasy during his first four years in the NFL. The talented wide receiver from Ohio State was considered by many as special teams ace and at most a backup coming into the league. It didn’t take long for Washington to realize they had a gem on their hands. Washington had to somewhat “hide” McLaurin during training camp and in the pre-season so teams wouldn’t see how special he was.

Ahead of the 2022 season, Terry McLaurin was the #21 WR according to FantasyPros ECR. McLaurin totaled 190.5 FP (Half PPR) on the year and finished with 5 receiving touchdowns. Now let’s recap his 2022 season and determine what to do with Terry McLaurin in fantasy going forward.

2022

McLaurin and the Washington Commanders opened their 2022 season at home against the up-and-coming Jacksonville Jaguars. Along with a new name, it was also the debut of new quarterback Carson Wentz. McLaurin was having somewhat of a quiet game until the 4th quarter when he caught a long 49-yard touchdown. The Commanders went on to win the game and he ended up with 12.8 FP. McLaurin then went on a 5 game touchdown drought before the matchup with the Green Bay Packers. Carson Wentz had since gone down with a hand injury and it was Taylor Heinicke in at QB. McLaurin was able to break free against the pesky Jaire Alexander for a pretty 37-yard score.

Great job by Heinicke here. Holds the safety in the middle of the field with his eyes then quickly sets and throws to McLaurin down the sideline 1-on-1. McLaurin wins, #Commanders TD pic.twitter.com/uXQ97NmzX6
— Mark Bullock (@MarkBullockNFL) October 23, 2022

In the next 6 games, McLaurin went over 100+ yards three times. It was clear that he had developed a better chemistry with Heinicke and his production was improving. To end the 2022 campaign, the Commanders had yet another QB starting. This time it was rookie Sam Howell stepping in under center. Howell showed right away that he belonged connecting with McLaurin on his first NFL touchdown. McLaurin also caught a 52-yard reception down the sidelines on a beautiful throw from the young QB. Howell looked the part against Dallas and will be QB1 in Washington moving forward.

2023

Coming into the 2023-2024 fantasy season there is a lot to like about Terry McLaurin’s value. Sam Howell, although raw has all the tools to succeed and has already shown on the field chemistry with McLaurin. Add to that the addition of new Offensive Coordinator Eric Bieniemy and you can see why his stock is going up. If Howell can stay healthy and play all 17 games it would be the first time in his career McLaurin has had a steady QB.

Terry McLaurin’s Fantasy Outlook

There is a lot to like in terms of Terry McLaurin’s fantasy value going into the upcoming season. Currently, I have him ranked at #43 in my 2023 top 100 fantasy rankings and I could see him rising from there. The wild card will be Sam Howell and if he can excel in Bieniemy’s system. If so I am expecting double-digit touchdowns for the first time in McLaurin’s career.

What is Jahan Dotson’s Dynasty Outlook in 2023 and Beyond?

Jahan Dotson was somewhat of a wildcard going into last season. Dotson was receiving plenty of buzz inside the Washington Commanders camp. Outside of that most of the NFL world was focused on Chris Olave and Garrett Wilson in terms of 1st round wide receivers. As for pre-draft rankings, Dotson was #29 WR according to FantasyPros ECR and he ended up with 113.1 FP (Half PPR). Dotson missed 5 games due to a hamstring injury that hampered his production. Let’s take a closer look at Jahan Dotson dynasty shares going forward.

2022

Unlike some other rookies we have profiled here, Dotson wasted no time making his mark. In week 1 against the Jacksonville Jaguars he finished with 2 touchdowns including an impressive game-winner. On the day Dotson finished with 16.5 FP and 40 yards receiving. Dotson kept his touchdown streak going when the Commanders visited the Detroit Lions in week 2. He scored on a nasty juke move that made space for Carson Wentz to fit in a tight throw. One thing that sticks out right away with Dotson on film is his route-running ability. He is very shifty and often leaves defenders flat-footed.

In the week 4 matchup against the Dallas Cowboys, Dotson flashed his route-running ability again scoring a touchdown in the corner of the endzone. Unfortunately not long after he went down with a hamstring injury that led to him missing some time.

In his return from the hamstring injury Dotson was eased back into the gameplan slowly. He put up minimal numbers in his first three games back. In week 13 against the New York Giants Dotson made his mark again. He caught a grab over the middle and used an impressive spin move on his way to the game-tying score.

2023

Going into next year there are some key questions to ask in terms of Dotson. The first of which is how well will he mesh with Sam Howell. If it’s any indication Dotson and Howell showed some chemistry in the final game of the year against the Cowboys. Despite limited targets and just 35 receptions on the year Dotson still finished with 7 touchdowns. He had an 18.9% TD rate according to PlayerProfiler which was good for 14th best in the league. Consistency at the quarterback position will be key for Dotson going forward.

Jahan Dotson’s Dynasty Value

Where do I rank Jahan Dotson’s dynasty value for next year? I am still high on Dotson’s ability and his production will only go up. The key is how well Dotson and Howell progress in new Offensive Coordinator Eric Bieniemy’s system. Bieniemy coming in to run the Commanders offense is a huge x-factor. He will find creative ways to get Dotson more involved and increase his target share. For now, Dotson is a HOLD for me going into the 2023 NFL season.

One could argue that the RPO (run-pass option) is one of the most successful play designs in the NFL today. The ability for the quarterback to either hand off to the running back or hold it and throw to his receivers really puts defenses in a bind. Let’s take a deep dive into where the RPO originated from and which quarterbacks are the best at it.

What is the RPO in Football?

The RPO was developed from the triple option which became successful in college football. The premise is simple, the power is in the quarterbacks hands as he can hand the ball off, pass the ball or even keep it and run depending on how the defense is playing. When you look at this play design it seems simple on the surface but there is a lot going on that makes this play successful.

First, the quarterback needs to be comfortable at reading a defense. Before the ball is snapped he needs to survey the defensive alignment and determine what type of defense they are playing. Is it a man-to-man or zone? The quarterback can get an indication of what type of alignment they are in by running some motion with their receivers and tight ends. If it’s determined that the defense is zone than an RPO play would be an ideal play call to run. Specifically a quick throw slant with the receivers attacking the zone and the quarterback getting the ball out fast.

Let’s now take a look at the running game benefits of the RPO. Once the ball is snapped the quarterback can read the linebackers and decide to hand it off or pass it. If the linebackers are fleeing backwards it opens up space for the zone run game. Jalen Hurts and the Eagles are arguably the best in the NFL today are running the RPO. With that said take a look at how the Commanders utilized this with their rookie Sam Howell.

Want to build an offense around Howell? Start with this. RPO combining zone run game with back side quick hitting element. Guys like Schweitzer and Cosmi terrific at generating movement in zone. Howell gets easy read, LG Chris Paul gets a nice cut off, huge run lane pic.twitter.com/V0Ln8D0lGf
— Mark Bullock (@MarkBullockNFL) January 9, 2023

As you can see in the highlighted play the Cowboys linebackers immediately retreat expecting pass and this opens up a huge hole for the running back. Like Hurts, Howell has the mobility to run which makes this an ideal offense to build around him. Even though it’s most deadly when the quarterback has mobility it can also be effective for those that lack the ability to run.

Riding the RPO to the Super Bowl

In 2017 the Philadelphia Eagles were riding high with Carson Wentz playing at an MVP level. It all changed when Wentz suffered a serious knee injury against the Rams and Nick Foles took over. Foles lead the Eagles to win the Super Bowl and he himself earned Super Bowl MVP. One of the reasons Foles was so successful was he utilized the RPO in an effective way.

Nick Foles has a 93.8% completion percentage on RPO (run-pass option) plays during these playoffs. 93.8%!!!
— Smitty (@SmittyBarstool) January 31, 2018

When Foles took over for Carson Wentz then head coach Doug Pederson had to change the offense to accommodate his strengths. He knew that Foles lacked the mobility that Wentz had and needed to adjust. Pederson was one of the early adopters of the RPO and had a firm grasp on how to run it. The main points were to get the ball out of Foles hands quickly to neutralize the pass rush and attack the opposing secondary with the quick pass game. The results speak for themselves as Foles was incredibly accurate in this system and he now has a statue outside of Lincoln Financial Field in Philadelphia.

Future of the RPO and can it be stopped?

One can expect that the RPO offense will become more and more popular in the coming years. The NFL is a copy cat league and with the recent success of Jalen Hurts and the Eagles I expect more teams to follow that blueprint. As we pointed out with Nick Foles the quarterback doesn’t necessarily need to be mobile for it to work. Ideally a team would have a mobile quarterback that would give them another option for the QB to run. With that being said many defensive coordinators will be game planning to stop the RPO. How can they counter it?

One option to contain the RPO is utilizing the 3-safety defense. In this system another safety is added to the defense while a defensive lineman is taken off the field. This type of scheme is best used in passing situations. Ideally the added safety provides better coverage ability but also the ability to attack in front of them on short passing situations. The defense will still have its challenges but this type of alignment gives them a better chance to be successful.

At the end of the day the RPO is here to stay and in today’s modern NFL it’s a must have in the offensive play book. The key will be how defenses adapt and try to contain it with different defensive packages. It will be a fascinating cat and mouse game for many years to come.

Dallas Cowboys (-11) at Tennessee Titans

Tennessee will be depleted in this game, meanwhile the Cowboys are playing for that #1 seed. Cowboys all the way in this one.

Dallas 27 Titans 10

Arizona Cardinals at Atlanta Falcons (-3.5)

Colt McCoy appears to be back this week but with Arizona out of the playoff hunt, I like the Falcons in this game. They are fighting for the division. On a positive note, Tyler Allgeier is playing extremely well for Atlanta.

Atlanta 24 Arizona 21

Cleveland Browns at Washington Commanders (-2)

Cleveland has been eliminated from the playoffs while the Commanders are hanging on to the 7th spot in the NFC. Ron Rivera yesterday announced his new starting QB in Carson Wentz. In recent reports, Carson Wentz took time to reflect on what he needs to work on if he did come back. I think we see a different Wentz in this game. Someone that is confident, understands the offense and will be asked to continue the same game plan they had with Heinicke. The only difference is that he may be asked to make some deep throws. The defense needs to step up in this game and stop their two playmakers, Chubb and Cooper. I want to see the defensive line disrupt Deshaun Watson and reek havoc.

Commanders 27 Cleveland 21

Chicago Bears at Detroit Lions (-6)

This should be a good NFC North battle between the Bears and Lions. The Lions are still fighting for that 7th spot while the Bears have been eliminated. I think the Bears play well in this game and beat the Lions by a field goal.

Bears 20 Lions 17

Jacksonville Jaguars (-4.5) at Houston Texans

Jacksonville is a hot team right now and seem to be clicking at the right time. They’ll need some work to get in the playoffs but should be able to handle the Texans with ease.

Jacksonville 30 Texans 17

Denver Broncos at Kansas City Chiefs (-13.5)

The Broncos are in turmoil coming off an embarrassing 51-17 loss to the Rams. At this point, they will be playing a lot of backups and the Chiefs are playing for the #1 seed. Take KC by a lot.

Chiefs 33 Broncos 10

Miami Dolphins at New England Patriots (-3)

Tua Tagovailoa is in concussion protocol and the reeling Dolphins have a tough matchup in New England. This will be a low scoring ugly kind of game with the Patriots winning.

Patriots 17 Dolphins 13

Indianapolis Colts at New York Giants (-6)

Giants have a firm hold on the 6th seed in the NFC but still would like to win the last two games. They shouldn’t have a problem this week against a Nick Foles led Colts team.

Giants 24 Colts 14

New Orleans Saints at Philadelphia Eagles (-6.5)

Philly will be short handed once again without Jalen Hurts. But that’s OK as Gardner Minshew looked pretty darn good last week. The Eagles are just too good on both sides of the ball even with Lane Johnson out. The Saints have a lot to play for but the Eagles are a complete team.

Eagles 31 Saints 17

Carolina Panthers at Tampa Bay Buccaneers (-3)

The Panthers are another team peaking at the right time while the Bucs look like they don’t even want to play in the playoffs. This should be another low scoring affair. My mind tells me take the Panthers but then I remember who the Bucs have at quarterback. Brady hasn’t been playing well but I think he does just enough to squeak out a victory in Tampa.

Bucs 20 Panthers 16

San Francisco 49ers (-7) at Las Vegas Raiders

Derek Carr was benched this week and the Raiders are out of the playoffs. At this point, they are evaluating players for next year. 49ers all the way.

49ers 28 Raiders 10

New York Jets (-1.5) at Seattle Seahawks

Mike White is back as the Jets starting quarterback but he’s playing in a tough city in Seattle. This is a do or die game for Seattle who is trying to get that #7 seed. I think Seattle plays their best game in a while and take care of the Jets in this one, even with Mike White.

Seattle 23 Jets 17

Minnesota Vikings at Green Bay Packers (-3.5)

This should be a classic. Minnesota already clinching a playoff spot is just one game out for the #1 seed. The Packers have won three in a row and appear to be clicking. The fact that there in Green Bay has me swaying towards the Packers in this one. They are fighting for their playoff lives.

Packers 27 Vikings 23

Los Angeles Rams at Los Angeles Chargers (-6.5)

The Rams came alive last week, but not against the Chargers D this week. The Chargers D will have at least two takeaways and control this game.

Chargers 24 Rams 13

Pittsburgh Steelers at Baltimore Ravens (-3)

The Steelers are mathematically still alive in the AFC playoff race. The Ravens also need to play well to stay in the #5 spot. Huntley will once again be at the helm. Take the Ravens by a field goal.

Ravens 24 Steelers 21

Buffalo Bills (-1) at Cincinnati Bengals

Could this be a preview of the AFC Championship? Maybe, but the Chiefs might have something to say about that. Is this a statement game? The fact that the game is Cincinnati makes me think they have a slight advantage. In Buffalo, well that’s a different story. Take the Bengals in a close one.

Bengals 34 Bills 31

Last weeks record 10-6

Ron Rivera has named Carson Wentz the starting QB going forward on Wednesday morning. I’m sure this was very difficult for Ron as he weighed both the pros and cons of this decision. I totally understand why he made the decision to start Carson, I mean the Commanders did pay him a lot of money to be their starting QB. From a football side, I also understand and here’s why I think this is the right decision.

You know what your going to get with Taylor Heinicke at the helm. That is, somebody that can escape the pocket make a crazy throw and keep the play alive. He also plays with moxie and the players love to play for him. What you don’t get from Taylor is the deep accurate ball, the arm strength, the experience. This is everything Carson has. There have been reports that Carson Wentz had time to reflect on his game and what he needed to work on. For Carson, he has to not take so many sacks, if there’s nothing available, check it down to Antonio Gibson or Brian Robinson Jr. I think if your Rivera you tell Carson, I just need you to run the offense and continue to do what Taylor has been doing. That means run the ball first, mix in some play action and play good defense. First and foremost though, protect the ball. If he does that, the Commanders should be successful.

A bonus with Carson is the ability to throw the deep ball and utilize their fast and talented receivers. If they get down 14-0, I feel more comfortable with Carson leading the team and the ability for him to get chunk plays back more quickly. There is a risk/reward with Carson but if this team makes the playoffs and want any thought of making a run, Carson needs to be the guy. If they stick to their identity the last 9 games or so, they should be fine. The real success of this team, will be the ability of the defense to continue playing like they have. This will make Carson’s job way easier. It remains to be seen how this will turn out but after some thought, Wentz gives the Commanders the best chance to win the next two games and then make a run in the playoffs.

Will Sam Howell start in 2022?

By: Brock Wells

Sam Howell was drafted in the fifth round by the Washington Commanders in the 2022 NFL Draft out of the University of North Carolina. As it stands, Carson Wentz is set to be the Week One starter for the Commanders against the Jacksonville Jaguars. But Wentz has always been iffy at best as a starting quarterback, and the Commanders aren’t expected to make a lot of noise in the NFC playoff picture this season.

Barring a dramatic overperformance on the part of Wentz, it’s difficult to say that his job is secure long term. Should the Commanders struggle, do they turn to Taylor Heinicke, who started for the team in 15 games in 2021, or is it possible that they decide to turn to the rookie Howell? The team went 7-8 in those 15 games with Heinicke at the helm in ’21. If the team decides to get creative and push the boundaries a bit, Howell might be the better choice.

Sam Howell broke North Carolina's all-time pass TD record on this dynamic play ? pic.twitter.com/9EUcPFtPR6
— ESPN (@espn) September 4, 2021

It’s been quite a while since the NFL team from Washington D.C. has excited anyone, let alone their fanbase. After years of turmoil from the controversy surrounding their now retired name to allegations of abuse and harassment, this is a team that desperately needs to find something else to shape its identity around. A rookie quarterback with a lot of spunk could be exactly what this team is looking for.

Howell has been one of the bright spots in training camp for the Commanders by all accounts and has been able to showcase his arm strength and accuracy on several occasions. Though this seems to me to be much more about the team’s identity going forward than it is about mere training camp notes. Wentz seems to be a band aid for the team at best. He surely isn’t any kind of solid answer for them long term.

The success of the team is ultimately going to determine who their quarterback is going to be. If the Commanders look like a sub-.500 team by mid-season, what would be the harm in putting Howell in the starting lineup for a game or two to see what happens? If they manage to be more successful than that and buck preseason projections, then maybe sticking with Wentz or Heinicke continues to be the best thing for them in ’22.

Sam Howell hitting em right in the chest ?

It certainly isn’t Howell’s statistics that make him an outlier among recent rookie quarterbacks.

NCAA career stats:

Howell (2019-2021, 37 games): 10,283 passing yards, 92 touchdowns, 164.2 passing efficiency rating

Trevor Lawrence (2018-2020, 40 games): 10,098 passing yards, 90 touchdowns, 164.3 passing efficiency rating

Zach Wilson (2018-2020, 30 games): 7,652 passing yards, 56 touchdowns, 162.9 passing efficiency rating

Honestly, what do the Commanders have to lose?

By: Jeremy Trottier

This offseason we have seen various quarterbacks moving around in the NFL landscape: Russell Wilson to the Denver Broncos, Deshaun Watson to the Cleveland Browns, Matt Ryan to the Indianapolis Colts, and the move we will talk about about today, Carson Wentz to the Washington Commanders. The 2016 #2 overall pick has had a very tempestuous career so far, going from a potential MVP candidate in 2017, to tying Drew Lock for most interceptions in 2020. Last season he brought the Colts to within 1 game for a playoff spot, and then lost to the Jaguars, throwing an interception and only 185 yards, scoring only 1 total touchdown on the game. With this, what should the Commanders’ plan be for 2023 onwards if Wentz does not produce in 2022, and what should they look into.

You only need two plays to sum up Carson Wentz, QB pic.twitter.com/YlpyCv9KGI
— Josh Norris (@JoshNorris) March 9, 2022

2023 NFL Draft Options

The first option for the Commanders would be looking at getting a 2023 quarterback. With two projected stars at the top of the draft in C.J. Stroud and Bryce Young, as well as some other potential options to look into, they could have a shot at one. Provided that Wentz does mediocre or poor in 2022, this would likely leave the Commanders in the top 20 or 15 again, similar to this past season. Trading up is a possibility, considering they have all their picks aside from either their 2023 2nd or 3rd (2nd will be the Colts’ if Wentz plays 70% or more snaps, 3rd will be Colts’ if he plays less than 70% of snaps.) If they are sold on Young or Stroud after their 2022 campaigns, I have no issue believing they would move up for one or the other. On top of that, you have some other notable QBs to watch for, such as:

Spencer Rattler ”“ South Carolina (provided he has a huge resurgence)

Anthony Richardson ”“ Florida

Kedon Slovis ”“ Pitt

Will Levis ”“ Kentucky

Tyler Van Dyke ”“ Miami

Caleb Williams ”“ USC

Any of these options could be potential first round or second round talents based upon their 2022 play. Provided Stroud and Young both have another great season, the Commanders could just sit at whatever pick they may have and take one of the remaining options if they want to go that direction. Regardless, the draft is definitely a viable option for 2023.

Anthony Richardson vs USF

(3/3)
{152 passing yards}
[2 passing touchdowns]

Richardson also had 115 rushing yards on 4 carries while adding a rushing touchdown. pic.twitter.com/TD7q8GggE1
— CFBLIVE247 (@CFBLive247_) September 13, 2021

2023 NFL Free Agency

Next up, we have the option of free agency, and potentially signing a quarterback if they choose to go this direction. There is a pretty good list of QBs going through the 2023 FA class, headlined by Baltimore Ravens star quarterback Lamar Jackson. The 2019 MVP has been one of the better players in the league for a few years now, and the Ravens have still not extended him as of yet, which could see him hit free agency if they end up not being able to agree on a contract. Other than Lamar, there is:

Jimmy Garoppolo

Baker Mayfield

Teddy Bridgewater

Drew Lock

Gardner Minshew

Daniel Jones

Sam Darnold

Are any of these options better than Wentz would be the real question. Based on age, you have DJ, Darnold, Minshew, Lock, and Mayfield who are all on the younger side of things, who provide at least some sort of potential if an offense can get a good scheme fit. Bridgewater and Jimmy G are both reliable short term options, who you are not necessarily going to win because of, but you can clear win with, as Jimmy brought the 49ers to the Superbowl less than 3 years ago, and with Bridgewater being solid in New Orleans and Denver. These options would essentially come down to which one the front office would want to take a shot on, or even pair with a 2023 rookie.

#Broncos Teddy Bridgewater had 8.9 YPA against the #Cowboys on Sunday and scored twice.

This 44-yard touchdown to Tim Patrick over league INT leader Trevon Diggs was captured beautifully by NFL Films. pic.twitter.com/NwYllhfjze
— Dov Kleiman (@NFL_DovKleiman) November 9, 2021

On-Roster options

Finally, we come to the potential options currently on the Commanders roster, which is basically a 50/50 shot. The main two you would look to in the absence of Wentz would be Taylor Heinicke, who started last year and was mediocre at best, and 2022 draftee Sam Howell. Howell entering 2021 was seen as one of the better QB options in the class, however after a relatively unproductive 2021 campaign, he fell down the boards quite a bit. While this was not specifically his fault, as he lost a lot of playmakers to the 2021 NFL Draft class, it still scared off potential suiters enough to have him be another QB to fall into the 3rd, which all in this class did aside from Kenny Pickett. Howell did break 3000 passing yards in every season at UNC however, with 24+ touchdowns each year (38 in 2019 and 30 in 2020) while never having double digit interceptions. Howell could be the long term option, we just have to wait and see how he progresses as a QB for Washington.

Latest outlook of Terry McLaurin

By: Jake Rajala

The Washington gold, also known as Terry McLaurin, has been a quality wideout over the past two seasons. Here is a closer look at how productive Scary Terry has been for Ron Rivera over the past couple of years:

2020 (15 games): 134 targets, 87 receptions, 1,118 yards

2021 (17 games): 130 targets, 77 receptions, 1,053 yards

Terry has been a B NFL player and an A Washington player in his career. I believe the best is yet to come for the 26-year-old WR. Most importantly, I honestly expect Carson Wentz to bring the Commanders back to the post-season. As we stand here today, I feel like the Commanders, Saints, and Cardinals will be the three wild-card squads in next year’s NFC playoff gauntlet.

The defense of @cj_wentz.@TorreySmithWR is standing by his guy and showing you why he's going to succeed in Washington this season.

Come at him Twitter, he's ready. pic.twitter.com/0iHLhQH2b2
— Good Morning Football (@gmfb) May 6, 2022

The entire Colts fan base may still want to virtually sacrifice Wentz for his Week 18 meltdown, but he did throw 27 passing touchdowns in his first season as a Colt. It’s impressive that he was a potent red-zone machine, while his best WR was Michael Pittman Jr. (88 targets, 1,082 yards, and 6 touchdowns in 2021) and the Colts second-leading WR in 2021 was Zach Pascal. I believe Wentz can definitely throw 32-38 touchdowns in Washington’s offensive attack in 2022. I expect Rivera and the Commanders to bring the 29-year-old back after this season, as well. In retrospect, they may have made a wise decision to trade for Wentz (meanwhile, the Panthers are arguably in QB hell).

Wentz will certainly be an upgrade over Taylor Heinicke, as Heinicke threw 20 passing touchdowns, 15 ints, and 3,419 passing attempts last season. If Heinicke can go toe to toe for 3/4 quarters against Brady in the playoffs, Wentz should feel confident that he can work magic with the talented Washington team in his new chapter. It should be noted that the Commanders don’t need him to be Joe Theisman.

Washington QB Taylor Heinicke steals hearts of viewers with 'courageous' performance in loss to Buccaneers https://t.co/8vH6sCJyll pic.twitter.com/LFkFyIX099
— Around The NFL (@AroundTheNFL) January 10, 2021

The Washington fan base should feel delighted to hear that Ian Rapport stated on Wednesday morning that the Commanders want to keep him for the foreseeable future. I expect Wentz to lean on McLaurin’s ability deep down the field and in short routes for many years to come. I expect McLaurin to have career numbers in targets, receptions, and yards in 2022.

Scary Terry is currently the 16th best WR in dynasty PPR via Fantasy Pros at this point in time. I believe it’s time to buy McLaurin, as he should be looked at as a Top 12 WR in my opinion. Samuel can be a nice/improved chess piece in the “Percey Harvin role”, but I don’t expect him (9 targets in 5 games last season) to be a heavily involved WR2. It’s honestly the Wentz and Terry show moving forward.
