<h1 class="wp-block-heading">What is the Chiefs offensive line outlook?</h1>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">By: Jake Rajala</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The Kansas City Chiefs may have one of the most dangerous quarterbacks, but they also quietly have a stellar offensive line. <a href="https://www.pff.com/news/nfl-offensive-line-unit-rankings-tiers-2022">PFF </a>ranked the Chiefs OL as the ninth-best unit in the league. They are anchored by the three-time Pro Bowl LT Orlando Brown Jr. He was phenomenal last season &#8212; as he only allowed four sacks and registered a 75.4 grade by <a href="https://www.pff.com/nfl/players/orlando-brown/46227">PFF</a>. </p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Joe Thuney, also known as the only player in NFL history to start in the Super Bowl in each of his first three seasons, should continue to be a reliable, force for the Chiefs. He garnered an 80.5 grade by PFF a season ago &#8212; while allowing a mere one sack. </p>

<figure class="wp-block-embed is-type-rich is-provider-twitter wp-block-embed-twitter"><div class="wp-block-embed__wrapper">
<blockquote class="twitter-tweet" data-width="550" data-dnt="true"><p lang="en" dir="ltr">Joe Thuney can solve a Rubik&#39;s cube in less than 120 seconds. </div></figure>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Andrew Wylie needs to improve his craft a bit &#8212; after allowing four sacks and having a 67.2 grade by PFF in 2021. He re-signed to the Chiefs on a one-year deal worth $2.5 million dollars this off-season. They may wish to ink a new guard in the 2022 FA period. </p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Creed Humphrey (2021 second-round pick) was a rockstar in his rookie campaign &#8212; as he only allowed one sack while locking in a 91.4 grade by PFF. He was dubbed as the second-best center in football last season. Trey Smith (sixth-round pick in 2021) had a modest season (72.3 grade by PFF). However, he did allow four sacks in 2021.</p>

<figure class="wp-block-embed is-type-rich is-provider-twitter wp-block-embed-twitter"><div class="wp-block-embed__wrapper">
<blockquote class="twitter-tweet" data-width="550" data-dnt="true"><p lang="en" dir="ltr">Finishing up my film work for OL Masterminds this weekend&#8230;working on Trey Smith tape.<br><br>Pass pro isn&#39;t passive ? <a href="https://t.co/JwIGnpD7jj">pic.twitter.com/JwIGnpD7jj</a></p>&mdash; Brandon Thorn (@BrandonThornNFL) <a href="https://twitter.com/BrandonThornNFL/status/1544776043617198082?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw">July 6, 2022</a></blockquote><script async src="https://platform.twitter.com/widgets.js" charset="utf-8"></script>
</div></figure>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">It&#8217;s quite clear that the Chiefs left side of their OL is very well-built to handle AFC West pass rushers like Joey Bosa, Maxx Crosby, Khalil Mack, and Chandler Jones. It will be paramount that the Chiefs OL can stay healthy for their gifted QB moving forward. </p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Nothing is more important than Patrick Mahomes being protected</h2>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">by: Chris Thomas</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Following the end of Super Bowl LV, the Kansas City Chiefs offensive line has been under the microscope because of their poor play during that game. The Chiefs were without their Pro Bowl tackles Eric Fisher and Mitchell Schwartz due to injuries and the rearranged line limited one of the leagues best offenses. </p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">It doesn&#8217;t take looking at the numbers to see the impact of the offensive line on a team who went 14-2 and made it to the Super Bowl. Anyone who watched the game could see how important their bookend tackles were to their success. However the numbers also pointed out how limited the Chiefs offense was with their makeshift offensive line that night. During the regular season the Chiefs offense averaged 29.6 points per game during the regular season and 30 points per game in the first two games in the playoffs. But during the Super Bowl was only able to put up nine points. Former league MVP Patrick Mahomes averaged 316 passing yards, 2.4 passing touchdowns, 24.4 completions, 36.8 passing attempts, and 0.38 interceptions per game during his 15 regular season starts. During the Super Bowl with a limited offensive line Mahomes had a stat line with 270 passing yards, zero passing touchdowns, 26 completions, 49 passing attempts, and two interceptions. </p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">What happened during that game made upgrading the offensive line a major priority for the Kansas City Chiefs this offseason. The moves Kansas City made this offseason to retool their offensive line not only has a major impact on the teams success next season but the rest of the league.</p>

<figure class="wp-block-embed is-type-rich is-provider-twitter wp-block-embed-twitter"><div class="wp-block-embed__wrapper">
<blockquote class="twitter-tweet" data-width="550" data-dnt="true"><p lang="en" dir="ltr">Can&#39;t wait to see more of <a href="https://twitter.com/PatrickMahomes?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw">@PatrickMahomes</a>&#39; signature walk this coming season ?<br> <a href="https://twitter.com/Chiefs?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw">@Chiefs</a> <a href="https://t.co/bumkfUc1tT">pic.twitter.com/bumkfUc1tT</a></p>&mdash; NFL Films (@NFLFilms) <a href="https://twitter.com/NFLFilms/status/1396873638331093001?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw">May 24, 2021</a></blockquote><script async src="https://platform.twitter.com/widgets.js" charset="utf-8"></script>
</div></figure>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">What the Chiefs did to their offensive line this offseason</h2>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">In shocking fashion the Chiefs decided to cut both Fisher and Schwartz early in the offseason that saved the team $18.3 million. It was shocking to see Kansas City cut both of them because if left them with the same unit that essentially cost them the Super Bowl. However Chiefs General Manager Brett Veach, decided to use that cap space to retool their offensive line. The headline addition to the offense from free agency was former Second Team All-Pro and New England Patriot Joe Thuney. They also signed former three time Pro Bowler Kyle Long out of retirement along with former Rams starting center Austin Blythe. Kansas City will also have two players who opted out of the 2020-21 season returning to the team who could start for them in guard Laurent Duvernay-Tardif and 2020 Third Round pick Lucas Niang. </p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Less than a week before the draft Kansas City made a blockbuster trade with the Baltimore Ravens acquiring Pro Bowl tackle Orlando Brown Jr., 2021 second round pick (Nick Bolton), and a 2022 sixth round pick for their 2020 first round pick (Jayson Oweh), 2020 third round pick (Ben Cleveland), 2020 fourth round pick (was traded back to select 2020 fifth round pick Shaun Wade and add a 2022 fourth round pick), and a 2022 fifth round pick. The Ravens traded Brown Jr. away because he wanted to make the full time transition to left tackle which the Chiefs will allow him to do. </p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">During the draft Kansas City also added Oklahoma Center Creed Humphrey, who many considered to be the best center in the draft, with the 63rd overall pick in the second round. They also drafted Tennessee Guard Trey Smith with the 226th pick in the sixth round. If not for the concerns created by the blood clots in his lungs he would have likely been a Day 2 pick. </p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">How the additions to the offensive line impact not only the Chiefs but the rest of the league</h2>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">It isn&#8217;t farfetched at all to say that Chiefs revamped offensive line could be a lot better than the line they had last year or even the unit from their Super Bowl season. They have added two former Pro Bowlers, a former Second Team All-Pro, and three promising young players via the NFL Draft. Kansas City has upgraded their starting line and has added some great depth to back them up and avoid what happened late last year. </p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">So if the Chiefs offensive line is that much better than they have been the past two seasons it begs the question, what is stopping Kansas City from being better in 2021-22. A better offensive line can only mean better overall offensive production for the Chiefs passing and running game. If the Chiefs offense plays better next season than they have the past two seasons Patrick Mahomes could win his second MVP in four seasons and the Chiefs could play in their third straight Super Bowl. </p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Barring injury, if the Chiefs offense is more dangerous next year than they have the past two seasons there is no one that could stop them in the AFC and possibly the entire league. The fate of the Super Bowl contenders in the AFC rest in the hands of the Chiefs offensive line. If the Chiefs offensive line plays at an elite level it would be hard to imagine another team stopping or limiting Kansas City&#8217;s offense enough to defeat them late in the year. It may be harder to imagine many teams outscoring the Chiefs offense as well. </p>

<h4 class="wp-block-heading">Which positions will the LA Rams bolster in the NFL Draft?</h4>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">by Michael Obermuller</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">If you were wondering whether or not the Los Angeles Rams have a first round pick in the 2021 NFL Draft ”” they don&#8217;t. In fact, the franchise that has not had a first round selection since drafting Jared Goff in 2016 is not scheduled to have another <strong>until 2024</strong>.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Rams general manager Les Snead has preferred trading his first rounders for proven NFL talent, which has had mixed results over the years. His most recent decision to acquire quarterback <strong>Matthew Stafford</strong> actually reversed a previous deal he made to move up for Goff in 2016 <em>(a mistake that would normally get a GM fired)</em>, but the Rams sustained success has lengthened the leash on Snead&#8217;s strange tenure.</p>

<figure class="wp-block-embed is-type-rich is-provider-twitter wp-block-embed-twitter"><div class="wp-block-embed__wrapper">
<blockquote class="twitter-tweet" data-width="550" data-dnt="true"><p lang="en" dir="ltr">2016: Rams trade two first-round picks to get Jared Goff <br><br>2021: Rams trade two first-round picks to get rid of Jared Goff <a href="https://t.co/kp9tuz2uK2">pic.twitter.com/kp9tuz2uK2</a></p>&mdash; NFL on CBS ? </div></figure>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Now that the Goff era has met its end in LA, we all finally get to see what Sean McVay can do with a <strong>top 15</strong> quarterback talent. Here are the other major ins and outs that the Rams have made so far this offseason.</p>

<figure class="wp-block-table is-style-stripes"><table><tbody><tr><td class="has-text-align-center" data-align="center"><strong>Re-Signed</strong></td><td class="has-text-align-center" data-align="center"><strong>Additions</strong></td><td class="has-text-align-center" data-align="center"><strong>Losses</strong></td><td class="has-text-align-center" data-align="center"><strong>Unsigned</strong></td></tr><tr><td class="has-text-align-center" data-align="center">Leonard Floyd, EDGE</td><td class="has-text-align-center" data-align="center">Matthew Stafford, QB</td><td class="has-text-align-center" data-align="center">Jared Goff, QB</td><td class="has-text-align-center" data-align="center">Blake Bortles, QB</td></tr><tr><td class="has-text-align-center" data-align="center"></td><td class="has-text-align-center" data-align="center">DeSean Jackson, WR</td><td class="has-text-align-center" data-align="center">John Johnson, S</td><td class="has-text-align-center" data-align="center"></td></tr><tr><td class="has-text-align-center" data-align="center"></td><td class="has-text-align-center" data-align="center">Devlin Hodges, QB</td><td class="has-text-align-center" data-align="center">Samson Ebukam, EDGE</td><td class="has-text-align-center" data-align="center"></td></tr><tr><td class="has-text-align-center" data-align="center"></td><td class="has-text-align-center" data-align="center"></td><td class="has-text-align-center" data-align="center">Austin Blythe, C</td><td class="has-text-align-center" data-align="center"></td></tr><tr><td class="has-text-align-center" data-align="center"></td><td class="has-text-align-center" data-align="center"></td><td class="has-text-align-center" data-align="center">Troy Hill, CB</td><td class="has-text-align-center" data-align="center"></td></tr><tr><td class="has-text-align-center" data-align="center"></td><td class="has-text-align-center" data-align="center"></td><td class="has-text-align-center" data-align="center">Michael Brockers, DT</td><td class="has-text-align-center" data-align="center"></td></tr><tr><td class="has-text-align-center" data-align="center"></td><td class="has-text-align-center" data-align="center"></td><td class="has-text-align-center" data-align="center">Gerald Everett, TE</td><td class="has-text-align-center" data-align="center"></td></tr><tr><td class="has-text-align-center" data-align="center"></td><td class="has-text-align-center" data-align="center"></td><td class="has-text-align-center" data-align="center">Josh Reynolds, WR</td><td class="has-text-align-center" data-align="center"></td></tr></tbody></table></figure>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph"></p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">As you can see, the cap-stretched Rams franchise has not had much flexibility in free agency after their recent trades for stars like Stafford and Jalen Ramsey. Necessary extensions for Aaron Donald, Robert Woods and others have not helped either. That all makes the NFL Draft crucial for Los Angeles, and they&#8217;ll have six picks to hit on from rounds two through seven <em>(headliners are <strong>one second </strong>and <strong>two thirds</strong>)</em>.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">With holes on the roster and not much money left to fill them, what areas should the Rams target with their top picks in 2021? Here are a few dream prospects for LAR in rounds two and three at positions of need.</p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading"><strong>3. Nick Bolton, ILB (Missouri)</strong></h2>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Some analysts have Nick Bolton falling to the third or fourth round due to his 2020 season, while others rave about his consistency as a run-stopper and tackler at Missouri. Pro Football Focus has him as the <strong>second-highest graded</strong> linebacker behind Micah Parsons the past two seasons, so the potential is there so long as the pro-fit is right. I believe it could be in Los Angeles.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The Rams need an inside linebacker that does nothing but tackle, and Bolton <strong>totaled 198</strong> of those during his Junior and Sophomore campaigns combined. During those two seasons, <strong>16.5</strong> of those stops were for a loss, with an added three sacks and three turnovers forced (two interceptions). Considering the Rams have been cycling through sub-par inside backers like Micah Kiser, Kenny Young and Troy Reeder for years now, Bolton could be an asset that immediately steps into a major role on this defense.</p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading"><strong>2. Creed Humphrey, C (Oklahoma)</strong></h2>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">With the departure of center Austin Blythe in free agency, Snead is left with a glaring problem at the heart of his offensive line. Brian Allen could be slated to start in 2021, but the former fourth round pick has yet to prove he can perform at the NFL level (58.6 PFF grade in 563 snaps in 2019). LAR needs to draft it&#8217;s center of the future, and that could be Oklahoma Sooner Creed Humphrey.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The 2020 Big 12 Offensive Lineman of the Year <span style="text-decoration: underline">did not</span> allow a sack on 401 passing plays. His <strong>intelligence</strong> and <strong>toughness </strong>help project him as a prospect that should go somewhere from rounds two to four, and his durability marks another trait for the Rams to rely on <em>(compared to a talent like <strong>Landon Dickerson</strong> out of Alabama)</em>.</p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading"><strong>1. Aaron Robinson, CB (UCF)</strong></h2>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Assuming no trades occur, the Rams first selection in 2021 will be at <strong>No. 57 overall</strong>, and they should really consider using this pick on a versatile defensive back like Aaron Robinson. The UCF product generally lined up in the slot in college, but scouts think he could play outside if need be. He&#8217;s a 5&#8217;11&#8221; press-corner that thrives at in your face man-to-man coverage, and his intensity should get him some looks in the second round (<strong>15 pass breakups</strong> the past two seasons).</p>

<figure class="wp-block-embed is-type-rich is-provider-twitter wp-block-embed-twitter"><div class="wp-block-embed__wrapper">
<blockquote class="twitter-tweet" data-width="550" data-dnt="true"><p lang="en" dir="ltr"><a href="https://twitter.com/hashtag/DeerfieldBeach?src=hash&amp;ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw">#DeerfieldBeach</a> HS (FL) &amp; <a href="https://twitter.com/hashtag/UCF?src=hash&amp;ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw">#UCF</a> alum CB Aaron Robinson (<a href="https://twitter.com/humblearob?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw">@humblearob</a>) runs a 4.38 in the 40 at <a href="https://twitter.com/hashtag/Knights?src=hash&amp;ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw">#Knights</a> Pro Day <a href="https://t.co/K20hhOTAuy">pic.twitter.com/K20hhOTAuy</a></p>&mdash; Sleeper Athletes (@SleeperAth1etes) <a href="https://twitter.com/SleeperAth1etes/status/1377685263175053318?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw">April 1, 2021</a></blockquote><script async src="https://platform.twitter.com/widgets.js" charset="utf-8"></script>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Robinson would slot in behind Ramsey and Darious Williams in 2021, as the Rams nickel CB (replacing Troy Hill). His style is similar to the All-Pro CB1 in LA, and Ramsey could even assist in the development of the rookie as a mentor of sorts. It&#8217;s possible Robinson may not make it to No. 57, but some other similar options at interior corner or CB/S hybrid include names like <strong>Asante Samuel Jr.</strong>, <strong>Jevon Holland</strong> and <strong>Shaun Wade</strong>.</p>
