Latest dynasty outlook of DK Metcalf

By: Jake Rajala

The Seattle Seahawks best player is unequivocally D.K. Metcalf entering the 2022 season. Metcalf may not have elevated to the production of Calvin Johnson Jr yet, but he has been a rockstar for the Seahawks in his three-year career. Metcalf, who also may or may not have found inspiration from Sullivan in Monsters Inc has 3,170 career receiving yards and 29 career touchdowns.

Try to stop D.K. Metcalf… just try ? @SONTHighlights pic.twitter.com/kJkIWDccDh
— Sports ON Tap Seattle (@SONTSeattle) October 13, 2019

In 2021, Metcalf was a monster without his star quarterback Russell Wilson for three contests. He recorded a career-high 12 touchdowns and he also collected a career-high 129 targets. It may seem like a daunting challenge for him to repeat the success he had with Wilson, but I believe the combination of him improving his skillset and SEA maintaining a focus on getting him involved should help him continue to be a potent weapon.

It appears that the familiar Geno Smith, who had modest performances in 2021, is the favorite to be QB1 at the moment. If Smith is the starting QB in Week 1, I still expect the Seahawks to throw the pigskin around the yard often. Smith averaged 24 pass attempts last season, while the former Seahawks legendary QB averaged 29 pass attempts in 2021. Smith nearly threw the ball as frequently as Wilson, while playing the mighty Saints and stingy Rams defense in two of his four games. Of course, Smith doesn’t have the same arm talent as Wilson, but the Seahawks won’t be scared to dial-up shots to Metcalf.

D.K Metcalf embarrasses the saints' defense with the impressive 84 yard TD?

The Seahawks (+185) go up 7 on their first throw of the gamepic.twitter.com/HjiKfT48Kt
— ClutchPoints Betting (@CPBetting) October 26, 2021

The 24-year-old should remain in a Seahawks uniform for the foreseeable future. The bulked-up wideout himself stated that he wants to lock in a long-term deal to remain a Seahawk. Currently, the utterly talented Metcalf is in an offense with a question mark at QB. The superb WR Tyreek Hill and very impressive WR Jaylen Waddle have QB Tua Tagovailoa, while the unearthly dangerous WR Metcalf has a less uncertain QB situation: Geno Smith/Drew Lock.

It may be easy to say Metcalf could be an elite WR or a non-Top 20 WR next season, but I expect him to have a roller-coaster performance with great individual game outcomes in 2021. I believe he is too special to not have top-end performances, regardless of his QB’s jersey number. It would make sense if he was up-and-down in a similar way that Ja’Marr Chase was last season, but Metcalf will likely have a slightly less productive single-season outing.

Which free agents should the Seahawks add right now?

By: Jake Rajala

The Seattle Seahawks truly face a mountain in 2022 after shipping out Russell Wilson and cutting ties with Bobby Wagner. Pete Carroll will have to be utterly in 2022 and 2023 to make the Seahawks a true contender in the frigid NFC West. The Seahawks still have superb profiles on their team like D.K. Metcalf, Tyler Lockett, and Jamal Adams.

The reigning DPOY on one side.
An up-and-coming 2nd-year WR on the other.

A breakdown of the matchup between Stephon Gilmore & D.K.

The Seahawks will still surely look to improve their Wilson-less squad in 2022. I expect them to aim to add a few under-the-radar pieces to their squad this offseason. With that said, here are a few remaining free agent targets for the Hawks:

Jerry Hughes

The Hawks really need to find more talent at the edge rusher spot. Carlos Dunlap (8.5 sacks in 2021) doesn’t appear to be returning to Seattle and they could really use a replacement for him. I don’t expect them to be a key contender in the Jadeveon Clowney sweepstakes, but they could still obtain a much less expensive, talented veteran edge rusher like Jerry Hughes. The long-time Bills sack artist has 6.5 sacks in the past two seasons combined.

Jerry Hughes looking like RB1 on this scoop-and-score TD. pic.twitter.com/i5lWoCoD4h
— Ari Meirov (@MySportsUpdate) December 19, 2020

Andy Dalton

The red rifle could be an excellent good value pickup for the Seahawks. Andy Dalton is basically the best backup QB option for Pete Carroll at the moment. It’s far from certain if Lock will pan out as the QB1 via health and productivity reasons. The former Broncos QB has started only 21 games in the past three seasons.

Andy Dalton. RAVENS KILLER.pic.twitter.com/g4qIZXNclS
— Ari Meirov (@MySportsUpdate) November 21, 2021

Tavon Austin

The former Rams first-round pick Tavon Austin would be a fine WR3 and do-it-all weapon for the Seahawks. Austin can be a nice security blanket for Lock by catching screens from the slot and he can also make magic happen from the backfield on tosses. Austin could be the poor man’s version of Percey Harvin in the Seahawks offense.

What is the dynasty outlook for Courtland Sutton?

By: Justin Frye

2019 was, so far, Courtland Sutton’s banner year in the NFL. In that year, he put up 72 catches, 1,112 yards, and 6 touchdowns in his 16 games. This with him catching passes from the likes of Joe Flacco and rookie year Drew Lock. In case you’re living under a rock, the Broncos and Seahawks agreed to a deal where Russell Wilson is going to be the Denver QB in 2022 and beyond.

Courtland Sutton went on #NFLNetwork total access and talk about Jeudy, Tim Patrick, KJ Hamler, him and Russell Wilson already talking in a group chat to gathered themselves before OTAs to build the offensive chemistry.#broncos #broncoscountry pic.twitter.com/OywAque272
— Michael Hernández (@MichaelNFL1) March 11, 2022

Sutton on NFL Total Access talking about building chemistry this offseason

Russell Wilson’s history with receivers

Over the last four seasons, Wilson has supported five top 24 finishes in fantasy points per game at the receiver position. This is despite up and down in season performances and an overall lack of passing volume. In each of his last five seasons, Seattle has been below 35 pass attempts on a per-game basis, including multiple seasons below 30. That Wilson has been able to sustain viable fantasy options is remarkable.

The Packers, where new Broncos Head Coach Nathaniel Hackett was Offensive Coordinator the last three seasons, were slightly higher than that, between 34.5 and 35.5 per game in his 3 years. While he wasn’t calling plays, Hackett was deeply involved and those tendencies are likely to be similar in Denver. Projecting that pass volume onto Wilson is exciting, as in his best year he only attempted 558 passes, which should be about where 2022 winds up.

Comparing team situations

In 2021, Sutton spent the offseason continuing his rehab from the ACL tear he suffered in his first game in 2020. Players are not usually fully recovered until closer to two years out per most medical experts. Projecting him back into the 2019 role he had is unrealistic, though, as Jerry Jeudy was drafted that offseason and Tim Patrick and Albert Okwuegbunam have both shown ability when targeted as well.

Everyone seems to be comparing Wilson’s old teammates to his new ones, and that’s a fair start but not the same. D.K. Metcalf is an athletic freak, and while Sutton is his best comparable, it’s not apples to apples. Same with Tyler Lockett to Jeudy. Wilson mainly had two guys in Seattle to target, in Denver he’s got five including RB Javonte Williams. Metcalf and Lockett saw 27% and 24% target shares in 2021, while Jeudy led Denver at 20% (in 10 games).

WOPR (Weighted Opportunity Rating) looks at a combination of a player's share of targets and share of air yards in his passing offense.

D.K. Metcalf was 6th in WOPR in both 2020 and 2021.

I may be seriously undervaluing Courtland Sutton in 2022.
— Zareh Kantzabedian (@ZKantzFF) March 11, 2022

In 2021 for Denver, Sutton was their deep threat, averaging 15.4 yards depth of target (aDOT). Interestingly, Lockett was Wilson’s deep threat at an aDOT of 14.6. Metcalf had more targets than any other Seahawk or Bronco at 129, with an aDOT of 12.7. Looking at these, it’s a little unclear how Wilson will use his new weapons, but I imagine Sutton will see similar target volume in 2022 to 2021, just of a higher quality.

Sutton, due to the depth of his targets, sat 12th in air yards in 2021, trailing both Lockett (11th) and Metcalf (7th). Assuming he’s still used in that downfield role, I expect significant yardage and touchdown growth in 2022. Sutton ranks fifth in playerprofiler.com unrealized air yards metic with 892. Metcalf is first with 902, but on a whopping 31 additional targets. I attribute that inefficiency to a difference in QB play that will change in 2022.

What does all this mean for Sutton in 2022 and beyond?

I expect career highs in yardage and touchdowns in 2022 from both Jeudy and Sutton, and a strong overall Broncos offense. I don’t think either Jeudy or Sutton’s comparisons to either of the Seattle receivers are fair, as play wise “Sutton is closer to Lockett and Jeudy to Metcalf” in how they’re used.

If I’m picking a comparison, I like 2016 Seattle with Jeudy in the Doug Baldwin role while Sutton plays a hybrid from old Jimmy Graham and newer D.K. Metcalf. Jeudy will average an extra target on Sutton, but Sutton will have the downfield and red zone roles. So what type of stats seem likely?

Most yards per reception since 2018: (min 200 targets)

Mike Williams – 17.3
Kenny Golladay – 16.7
Mike Evans – 16.5
Courtland Sutton – 16.1 pic.twitter.com/DtfygEInrx
— PFF (@PFF) March 21, 2021

Pre-2021 season, but comparisons make a lot of sense

110 targets, 65-70 catches, 1000-1100 yards, and probably 8 or so touchdowns, for the next few seasons. If he really connects in the red zone, could easily bump up to 12. That puts him squarely in line with Mike Williams 2021, with a ceiling of Mike Evans. Top 24 dynasty WR going forward, and a rock solid weekly WR2 with upside.
