Best darkhorse DPOY candidates

By: Jake Rajala

The Defensive Player of The Year winner last season was none other than T.J. Watt. The younger Watt bro clocked 22.5 sacks (which ties with Micahel Strahan for the most sacks in a single season), 21 tackles for loss, five forced fumbles, and a whopping 39 QB hits. The Steelers edge player is undoubtedly a prime DPOY candidate for his second season in a row. Aaron Donald and Myles Garrett are also heavy favorites to win DPOY.

Tyrann Mathieu: "I don't think nobody's better at their job than T.J. Watt." #Steelers #NFL
— Blitzburgh (@Blitz_Burgh) September 2, 2022

With that said, I’m going to untwine many darkhorse DPOY candidates in the 2022 season. So, who could be the biggest overachiever on defense?

Darius Leonard

Darius Leonard is an unusually talented football player, but he competes from the good-ole OLB position (which is looked down on). Leonard unleashed an absolutely astonishing 8 forced fumbles, 8 pass deflections, 4 interceptions, and 4 tackles for loss a season ago. Leonard was first-team All-Pro in 2021 and first-team All-Pro in 2020. I expect Leonard to not register more unearthly numbers, but he should be on a team that has much more success than a season ago.

Nick Bosa

The San Francisco 49ers pass rusher Nick Bosa won DROY, sadly missed his entire sophomore season, and then registered a whopping 15.5 sacks, 21 tackles for loss, 32 QB hits, and four forced fumbles last season. Bosa earned a very potent 88.3 grade from PFF last season, too. I love Bosa’s growth over his career and there isn’t any reason he doesn’t aspire to be the next pass rusher not named AD to win DPOY.

Year 4 Nick Bosa gonna be special pic.twitter.com/XmrnaGFB7B
— Alex ? (@Dubs408) August 18, 2022

Marcus Davenport

If Marcus Davenport stayed healthy, he may be the best player in football. All jokes aside, Davenport has the freak ability: 88.8 grade by PFF in 2021. Yes, you read that correctly. Unfortunately, Davenport has missed 12 contests in the past two seasons combined.

I foresee the Saints passing offense taking a monster step forward from last season and forcing opposing signal-callers to desperately keep pace. Hence, I expect Davenport and Cameron Jordan to have plenty of opportunities to tee off on opposing signal-callers in cruel situations.

Aidan Hutchinson

Aidan Hutchinson may be a rookie, but he is still an excellent football player. Hutch has been unstoppable this summer & quickly flashed his ability in the pre-season by having a tackle for loss. If he can squash Aaron Rodgers on numerous occasions, while having other unusual production, it would be hard to not hand him a plethora of respect. The mythical Lawrence Taylor won DROY and DPOY.

Can't stop Hutch ?#HardKnocks | @aidanhutch97 pic.twitter.com/gRfAWBr78X
— NFL Films (@NFLFilms) August 31, 2022

Chris Jones

The Kansas City Chiefs defensive tackle, Chris Jones, won’t let his position (DT) limit his abilities. He’s made the Pro Bowl & garnered second-team All-Pro in two of his past three seasons. Jones had a monster 2021 campaign – despite missing three games. If Jones can stay healthy, show out in pivotal contests, and watch Aaron Donald take a step back, he could honestly win DPOY.

Danielle Hunter is a darkhorse DPOY candidate

By: Jake Rajala

The Minnesota Vikings have a Prometheus-like edge rusher in Danielle Hunter. The Vikings mythical pass rusher Jared Allen recently stated that Hunter told him that he was going to break his sack record (22). I believe that the Jamaican-born football player (Hunter) should feel very enthusiastic about his chances of unleashing 20+ sacks and a DPOY-winning season in 2022.

Vikings edge Danielle Hunter, whom Jared Allen said told him he wants to break his season sack record of 22, works out on the bag before practice. pic.twitter.com/9g2nHpt1vw
— Chris Tomasson (@christomasson) July 30, 2022

It was clear that Hunter was on an unearthly pace in 2021 with six sacks, 10 quarterback hits, and six tackles for loss in seven contests. His best performance unequivocally came against the Arizona Cardinals – where he unleashed three sacks, seven tackles, and two stuffs. PFF gave him a fine 80.8 grade for his 2021 performance.

Hunter will not only be healthy, but he will also be licking his chops against weak divisional foes (such as CHI and DET). He was mopping the floor against his competition last season, yet he only played one game against the Lions and zero contests against the Bears. Similar to Aaron Donald in his latest DPOY-winning campaign, the Vikings edge rusher should look to rack up his stats against CHI and DET in the near future. Let’s not forget that Hunter has a thing or two for proving to A-Rod that he didn’t see the light until he was already a man.

Remember that one time when Danielle Hunter absolutely murdered Aaron Rodgers? My gawd.

Was going through some snaps by Griffen and came across this gem lol. pic.twitter.com/tPcJ6hM8sa
— Samuel Gold (@SamuelRGold) August 14, 2020

Hunter will not only benefit from staying on the field and going into John Wick-mode against his archnemesis, but I also foresee the Vikings passing offense to actually help Hunter, as well. I expect the Vikings new-look passing attack w/ a healthy Irv Smith Jr. to really light up the scoreboard – which should force opposing signal-callers to aim to keep pace with Captain Kirk. Hence, Hunter will have a plethora of moments to pin his ears back and unveil unusual sack figures.

The Vikings blood-thirsty pass rusher plays the golden position (edge rusher) to win DPOY, too. Of course, T.J. Watt won DPOY last season (after tying Michael Strahan’s sack record of 22.5 sacks). It should be noted that Football Outsiders feels the odds are stacked against Watt repeating his 2021 DPOY feat. I also believe the 31-year-old Aaron Donald, who is still arguably one of the Mount Rushmore defenders, to not win DPOY (for the second year in a row) if a pass rusher has at least very close to a record-breaking sack season w/ other top-tier edge-rushing statistics in 2022. Allen and John Randle defied expectations in their Vikings journey. Perhaps Hunter can climb mountains and take an unexpected leap towards defensive gold next season.

Parsons could win DPOY in 2022

By: Jake Rajala

The Dallas Cowboys linebacker Micah Parsons unleashed 13 sacks, 30 QB hits, 3 FF, and 84 combined tackles — which led him to win DROY. Parsons’s rookie season garnered him comparisons to the legendary Lawrence Taylor — who was named first-team All-Pro and won DPOY as a rookie. With that said, I’m going to sound the trumpets for three reasons why Parsons can take a step forward and win DPOY next season.

GAME REPLAY ?: LB Micah Parsons 2021 #dallascowboys pic.twitter.com/rCE6H2efnW
— Dallas Cowboys Network (@TheCowboysNet) July 10, 2022

Strength of schedule

The Boys should feel very excited about their 31st-ranked strength of schedule next season. Parsons should plan on mopping the floor in each match-up. Aaron Donald really capitalized off pedestrian competition in his last DPOY campaign, so Parsons shouldn’t feel guilty about racking up the stats against weak competition. Parsons should anticipate being able to dominate against the Carson Wentz-led Commanders and young, rebuilding Giants next season.

Growth

Parsons gained a year of experience and he should be able to react faster in his sophomore season. The Cowboys LB is also a workaholic, as he worked out with Demarcus Ware this off-season. Per SI, Parsons stated, “It’s going to be more challenging. But I never back down from a challenge”. Perhaps Parsons is actually ready to be an LB that embodies a 99 overall grade on Madden.

Aaron Donald destroying 3 Vikings run plays by himself pic.twitter.com/lEKwwTXu1I
— Nate Tice (@Nate_Tice) July 5, 2022

Aging Aaron Donald

The highest-paid non-QB in NFL history, Aaron Donald, has won DPOY in three of the past five seasons. Donald was an All-Pro player in 2021, but he didn’t win DPOY. In fact, Parsons (5) snagged more votes than the 31-year-old Donald (3 votes) last season. I believe Parsons is trending in the opposite direction as Donald. With that said, it may be a close race between Parsons and T.J. Watt for DPOY honors.

Darius Leonard is a darkhorse DPOY candidate

By: Jake Rajala

The Indianapolis Colts star linebacker Darius Leonard ‘feels amazing’ after his back surgery. Per Colts Wire, he could miss some training camp, but he should be ready for the regular season.

The former DROY has been a gift from the football gods, as he made the All-Pro team in three of the past four seasons. His latest season was especially impressive, as the Colts LB recorded a career-high 8 forced fumbles, 4 interceptions, 8 pass deflections, and 122 combined tackles.

3rd & 1. Watch Darius Leonard communicate that a toss play is coming after the Patriots motion Hunter Henry back in and Mac Jones checks the play.

Then he triggers and blows up the run for a TFL and forces a Patriots punt. pic.twitter.com/ofAjeSE4bz
— Nate Tice (@Nate_Tice) December 23, 2021

Leonard strangely didn’t receive a single vote for DPOY last season. Of course, T.J. Watt would win DPOY, but it was odd that he wasn’t a strong second or even third choice. Instead of Leonard picking up any love, the Cowboys 2021 rookie Micah Parson had five votes and the three-time DPOY Aaron Donald (who is five years older than Leonard) had three votes.

Leonard may not be a traditional LB/defensive player, but he’s still a magnet for creating turnovers and big hits. I believe that a big issue with the Colts in the past was their lack of crunch-time games. I expect that his reputation will significantly improve with a Matt Ryan featured Colts team that will have more hotly contested match-ups. After the Colts switched from Carson Wentz to Matt Ryan, I expect the Ryan-Jonathan Taylor show to also make opponents desperate to keep pace.

The former Colts safety Bob Sanders won DPOY from the safety position in 2007. Perhaps Leonard can be the Colts next unique player to win DPOY. If Leonard doesn’t win DPOY in the future, it’s still clear that he’s quietly putting together a career that could finish with him wearing a gold jacket.

Bosa is really underrated right now

By: Jake Rajala

The San Francisco 49ers relentless pass rusher Nick Bosa is one of two elite NFL profiles that has an older brother at the same position (of course, T.J. Watt is the other player). Most importantly, Bosa and Watt are both aspiring to be more successful than their older bros. After the Steelers pass rusher won DPOY last season, I believe Bosa is ready to prove that he can be the best defensive player in his family.

*Between Nick and T.J., I do believe that Nick has an easier chance to be better than his brother.

Nick Bosa appreciation post ? ? #49ers || #FTTB pic.twitter.com/kxDHbRb6Hl
— OurSF49ers (@OurSf49ers) May 10, 2022

Bosa had a fine rookie season, as he won Defensive Rookie of The Year and cracked a Pro Bowl spot. Unfortunately, Bosa only played in a mere two games in his sophomore season, as the entire 2020 49ers squad could resemble the Walking Dead. The motivated and healthy Bosa came back with swagger and more power as he unveiled a whopping 15.5 sacks, 21 tackles for loss, and 32 QB hits last season.

Bosa was fourth in the NFL and second in the NFC in sacks in 2021. After Watt snatched the DPOY award from Aaron Donald last season, I believe the fourth-year pass rusher in SF not named Aaron Donald could be the next behemoth pass rusher to win DPOY. In fact, Adam Schein from NFL.com believes that Bosa will win DPOY next season. He notes that Donald may retire, Bosa has shown out in pivotal playoff moments, and that 49ers defender is simply an excellent all-around player on a loaded team.

Nick Bosa in 5 career postseason games

30 pressures

6.5 sacks

He had 6 pressures and 2 sacks in today’s Divisional Round win over the Green Bay Packers
— Jordan Elliott (@splash_cousin) January 23, 2022

Hopefully, Bosa can really wreak havoc against the Rams OL that will miss former Pro Bowl LT Andrew Whitworth. Nick only ousted 1.5 sacks in two combined games against LA last season. It would be an understatement to say that Donald racked up his stats against pedestrian NFC West offensive lines in his DPOY campaigns. If Bosa can unleash more action than a Michael Bay movie against fellow divisional pass protections and strive to be the best player on the field in prime-time match-ups — he should have an All-Pro season and robust DPOY case next season.

Robert Quinn is the best darkhorse to win DPOY

By: Girvane Bola

In the 2014 season, Robert Quinn finished fourth in the AP DPOY voting. Seven years later, he had a phenomenal personal season. Quinn posted 18.5 sacks, his best since 2014, and his magnificent play on defense awarded him his third Pro-Bowl appearance and second All-Pro appearance. After last season, Quinn has the chance to win the Defensive Player of the Year award next season.

“He has a lot of pride in the way he plays and the product he puts on the field.” defensive coordinator Sean Desai said in December. Desai could not be more right about Quinn. At age 30, his pride and passion for the defensive game are not only evident but also infectious. His ability to get to opposing QBs and sack them with swiftness and ferociousness is astonishing. An example is his sack in the Week 2 win against Cincinnati Bengals. He shows tremendous pace and explosiveness to get to sack Burrow in the first quarter, the first of two in that game.

Sean Desai put Khalil Mack and Robert Quinn on the same side and had them stunt

No chance for Joe Burrow pic.twitter.com/iqzED8AnDX
— Lorin Cox (@CoxSports1) September 19, 2021

Furthermore, he can win DPOY with the high level of sacks Quinn can accumulate across the season. However, this could also be an argument against him, affirming his status as a wildcard and not a frontrunner. While 18.5 sacks are brilliant across the 2021 season, it is unlikely Quinn has a similar output of 18.5 or more. Nor does Quinn tie or break the NFL single-season sack record of 22.5. His sack total will most likely drop to approximately 13.5-16. Though good overall, it takes a lot to win DPOY now.

Last year saw Watt win the award. The defining factor was that Watt tied the NFL single-season sack record set by Giants legend Michael Strahan in 2001. What made this more remarkable was that the OLB did this in fewer games. To win the award now, one needs to tie or break a record that is considered unbeatable such as T.J. Watt and be impactful on the field.

Players like T.J. Watt and Aaron Donald have taken the defensive to new heights. Quinn must either match or exceed this. The Bears also need to improve their record if Quinn is considered for DPOY this upcoming season. Last year, his 18.5 sacks helped them win only six games. Yet, can they win more than six games with all those sacks? If the Bears become a playoff team with Quinn achieving 18.5 sacks or more, Quinn can be a contender for the Defensive Player of the Year.

When will Nick Bosa win his first DPOY award?

By: Jake Rajala

I envision the presence of the golden, Italian legend Frank Sinatra and the polarizing goon Tony Accardo, also known as “Joey Batters” when I witness Nick Bosa frequently take down opposing quarterbacks. The Bosa from the Bay Area and his brother from the City of Angels (Joey Bosa) have been all-star pass rushers in the league in the past few seasons. The Bosa bros clearly have the intimidating presence that the siblings from the film “Lawless” yield.

The younger Bosa in a San Francisco 49ers uniform has more potential than his older brother in my opinion. Nick (24 years old) is a couple of years younger than Joey (26 years old) and he’s had more success on a per-game basis in his career thus far. The SF pass-rusher made the Pro Bowl in his rookie year, as he notched 9 sacks. Nick Bosa would of course reel in a career-high 15.5 sacks in 2021, which was fourth in the NFL and second in the NFC. Bosa didn’t win DPOY last season, but I believe the motivating defensive end can soon strike gold and win the DPOY trophy that’s often claimed by pass rushers.

Packers week wouldn’t be complete without throwing it back to the NFCCG when Nick Bosa made All-Pro David Bakhtiari look like a third-string tackle. Sheesh #49ers pic.twitter.com/odzTwqRIXZ
— Coach Yac ?

Pedestrian NFC West competition

Bosa was clearly from another planet against his competition last season. Although, he didn’t mop the floor against his divisional rivals. He garnered 4.5 sacks in six games against his division foes. He didn’t turn up his success against his despised opponents in the wild NFC West. Bosa could benefit from watching the Saints Pro Bowl DE Cameron Jordan pin his ears back and beat down on the NFC South QBs Matt Ryan and Tom Brady in each matchup.

With this enunciated, I believe the blood-thirsty Bosa is primed to terrorize his NFC West opponents in 2022. The Los Angeles Rams LT Andrew Whitworth is 40 years old and coming off a Super Bowl victory. Whitworth could retire this offseason and many fans expect him to hang up his cleats soon. Bosa had a mere .5 sack in two regular-season matchups combined against the LA Rams last season, so he will be happy for Whitworth’s legacy and potential exit from the league in 2022. In Seattle, LT Duane Brown is a soon-to-be free agent, and he could not return next season. It seems realistic that Bosa will be licking his chops against weaker divisional competition next season.

From @NFLTotalAccess: #Rams LT Andrew Whitworth told us he’s leaning toward retirement but Wayne Gretzky — yes, Wayne Gretzky — has him at least thinking about a return.

“There’s only one thing better than winning one,” The Great One told Whitworth, “and that’s winning two.” pic.twitter.com/tjLMJ5raeP
— Mike Garafolo (@MikeGarafolo) February 24, 2022

Age of Robert Quinn and Aaron Donald

The Chicago Bears pass rusher Robert Quinn turned back the clock and unleashed 18.5 sacks last season (second-most in career). I don’t foresee the 31-year-old edge rusher, who has two 10+ sack seasons since 2014, knocking out 14+ sacks in 2022.

I expect Quinn to get the treatment that Nick Bosa received in 2021. It was noted that the 49ers Pro Bowl DE was doubled-teamed more than any other pass rusher throughout most of the season. The world knows that Nick Bosa can dominate while being double-teamed, but I expect teams to be much more prepared to defend Quinn next season and Quinn will surely face a lot more challenges.

Robert Quinn has been unstoppable this season. ?

1 RT = 1 #ProBowlVote for your NFC Defensive Player of the Month pic.twitter.com/heuxOkbPyq
— Chicago Bears (@ChicagoBears) December 2, 2021

Aaron Donald has been a wrecking ball and Super Bowl champion in recent memory, but I believe his DPOY potential and annual DPOY prize are in his rearview mirror. Donald is 31 in May and he already faces a wall of pass protection in each pivotal matchup. I believe he can be an All-Pro player for the eighth season in a row, but I believe the young, sack machine in Kyle Shanahan’s squad has a higher ceiling than the Rams future Hall of Fame DT.

Will Broncos Von Miller win DPOY this season?

By: Jordan Anders

The Super Bowl 50 MVP and eight-time pro bowler Von Miller is back and is already making a case for himself for defensive player of the year. Miller saw no real NFL action in over 600 days as he suffered a season-ending foot injury days before last season’s opener. This year, however, he is back and not only ready to make it back to the playoffs but make himself a prime candidate for the Associated Press NFL DPOY award.

Last week, the Denver Broncos opened up their season at MetLife Stadium to face the Giants where Von Miller would get his first start in nearly two years. Right off the bat, Miller looked like his old self with an early quarterback sack on Daniel Jones. With that sack, Von Miller entered the top 25 in NFL history in career sacks, he is currently sitting at #24 with 108.

Back like he never left. ?

?: FOX | @VonMiller pic.twitter.com/BcApiEYMKW
— Denver Broncos (@Broncos) September 12, 2021

Von Miller finished his first game back with three quarterback hits, three tackles for loss, and two sacks. These numbers, however, don’t go to show the impact Miller had on the game. With Miller putting pressure on quarterback Daniel Jones, Jones was only able to make one passing touchdown the entire game as well as a 59% completion rate.

Lots of minor details in Miller’s game are being overlooked since his injury last season, Pro Football Focus doesn’t even have Von Miller in their top 10 edge rushers for this season. Let’s not forget, Von Miller missed an entire season and is still the number one ranked active NFL sack leader. That’s not all, Von Miller is also the number one active player with the most seasons recording a 90+ PFF Grade.

Von Miller has been a one-of-a-kind player since he was drafted by the Denver Broncos in 2011 and continues to prove he is one of the best edge rushers in the game and one of the top defensive players. His comeback season this year is a solid campaign for him to win Defensive Player of the Year if he keeps doing what he’s doing, that is sacking quarterbacks and putting pressure on their offense.

The only downside is his competition. His competition: 3x DPOY award winner Aaron Donald, defensive tackle for the Los Angeles Rams. Aaron Donald is one of the best in the game and there’s no arguing that, odds have him as a top favorite for this year’s award and that likely won’t change. Von Miller has his work cut out for him as he is also going against Browns’ edge rusher Myles Garrett, Steelers’ linebacker T.J. Watt, and Washington’s defensive end Chase Young.

Von Miller in terms of the Defensive Player of the year award is very underrated and has been for years. This year he isn’t even in the top 20 for player’s odds of winning the award. Right now, he is being overlooked but as the season goes on it shouldn’t come as a shock when and if the media recognizes Miller as a legitimate DPOY candidate. Expect the fine wine edge player to keep pace with his competition until the end of the last game of the year.

Bengals Trey Hendrickson may win DPOY in 2021

By: Will Baptist

Trey Hendrickson will shoulder a lot of responsibilities after signing a 4 year $60 million contract with the Cincinnati Bengals this offseason. He will be the most talented pass rusher on the roster, and the Bengals need his presence to be felt immediately. After tying Aaron Donald for second in the NFL in sacks with 13.5 last season, he has become a force for opposing tackles to deal with.

Hendrickson has shown drastic improvement over the past two seasons and has blossomed into a dominant edge rusher. He has slowly started to take the field more often on early downs as he continues to develop as a run stopper. He played 53% of the Saints defensive snaps last year and if that number continues to grow, he can put up gaudy sack numbers. If he can successfully build on his breakout 2020 season, Hendrickson has a legitimate chance to compete for the Defensive Player of the Year award.

He will have his fair share of competition with Aaron Donald, T.J. Watt, Jalen Ramsey and so on. Aaron Donald won the award last year while also racking up 13.5 sacks, and has clearly been the best defensive player in the NFL over the last few seasons. Donald played 85% of the Rams snaps, while Watt played 83% of the Steelers snaps last season and finished with 15 sacks.

Aaron Donald is a human cheat code ? #Madden22 @EAMaddenNFL | @AaronDonald97 pic.twitter.com/a2X1SSdilI
— ESPN (@espn) July 27, 2021

Watt, Donald and Hendrickson all racked up similar sack numbers, but Hendrickson played about 300 fewer snaps than both of them. That amount of production in only 53% of the snaps is extraordinary and will push him to develop the rest of his game in order to stay on the field more. If he can play up to at least 70% of the Bengals defensive snaps this year, he could potentially hit 20 sacks on the season.

There have only been 12 instances where a player has racked up 20 or more sacks in a season since sacks have become an official stat. With the additional game this season, it could become slightly more common, but it still will be extremely rare. Hendrickson would be in an elite company if he could get to 20 sacks but it is not out of the realm of possibility.

He has to play close to 800 snaps and remain healthy, but he also needs the players around him to be dominant at their position. If he is constantly getting double-teamed due to his teammates struggling, then it will be tough for him to win the award.

Talent surrounding him

Hendrickson had a terrific defense around him with the Saints, and Cam Jordan on the opposite side of the line to wreak havoc. Jordan drew most of the attention throughout the year and finished with 7.5 sacks, but Hendrickson has now made a name for himself. For Hendrickson to win the Defensive Player of the Year award, he needs a lot of talent around him such as he did last year.

One dominant defensive lineman can only do so much, but luckily for Hendrickson, the Bengals defense is much improved heading into the season. The line should take a massive leap forward with the return of D.J. Reader clogging up the middle and stopping the run. Sam Hubbard will be the other starting edge rusher and he just inked a new contract and is poised for a stellar season.

Hubbard had a somewhat disappointing 2020 season with only two sacks, but he excelled at stopping the run. He can work his way back to being a great pass rusher like he was in 2019 when he racked up 8.5 sacks in his second season in the NFL.

The secondary will be much better with the additions of Mike Hilton and Chidobe Awuzie, along with Trae Waynes returning from injury. Hendrickson can tally up coverage sacks as he did with the Saints if the secondary can play up to their potential in Cincinnati.

Trae Waynes with the perfect coverage Terry McLaurin. pic.twitter.com/39Nhz1AWh1
— Bengals Study Room (@report_bengals) March 21, 2020

The Saints were an excellent team last year and finished the regular season at 12-4. Opposing teams were often losing and forced to throw the ball considering how good the Saints offense was. This helped Hendrickson with the ability to constantly rush the passer due to the Saints leading in most of their games.

The Bengals will need similar offensive production to get early leads and give Hendrickson the opportunity to get after the quarterback. If the Bengals do not improve much from their 4-11-1 record, the opposing teams will be run-heavy, and this will not play to Hendrickson’s strengths. With Joe Burrow and Joe Mixon healthy, the offense should not have an issue jumping out to early leads. Which should also lead to winning a lot more games for the Bengals.

Hendrickson will have his work cut out for him in the stacked AFC North and the firepower on the offensive side of the ball in that division. Chasing around Lamar Jackson will be a daunting task, but he showed how great he can be last year, and this franchise clearly believes in his talents and ability to grow.

The Bengals will need to be much better in order for Hendrickson to win the Defensive Player of the Year award. All the stars are aligning for the Bengals, and Hendrickson has the best chance of any player on the team to secure the award. His knack for getting after the quarterback and his extremely high motor are traits that translate to any franchise and system.

The 26-year old can prove that he can be one of the best defensive players in the NFL, and make the Bengals fans forget about losing Carl Lawson in free agency. If he can accomplish winning this award, or even be in the discussion for it, then the Bengals hit the lottery with this signing. He has all of the tools to win the award, it is simply a matter of remaining healthy and growing as an all-around defensive end to stay on the field more often.

Minkah Fitzpatrick DPOY worthy in 2021?

By: Dave Stewart

The annual NFL awards are always exciting. One of the most interesting each year is the Defensive Player of the Year award. Over the last four seasons, it has also come to be known as the Aaron Donald award. The Los Angeles Rams’ defensive tackle has won three out of the last four awards.

I do not believe anyone would bat an eye if he were to take home a fourth this season. However, Donald is not the player I want to talk about today. Pittsburgh Steeler safety, Minkah Fitzpatrick, is just 24 years old and already he has received First-team All-Pro accolades twice in the first three years of his career. What would it take for him to add to DPOY to his trophy case?

https://twitter.com/RenegadeBlitz/status/1414665393298362377?s=20

To answer that question, I felt it prudent to look to history. The award was first given out 50 years ago in 1971. A safety has won only four times in that span. Dick Anderson became the first in 1973, followed by Kenny Easley in 1984, Ed Reed in 2004, and Troy Polamalu in 2010. Polamalu, the most recent safety to take home the trophy did so by accumulating seven interceptions to go along with 11 passes defended, one fumble recovery, one sack, two QB hits, one touchdown, and 69 total tackles, six of them for losses.

He was a disrupter, all over the field, in order to be named the league’s best defensive player. Fortunately, for Fitzpatrick, his style has him all over the field, as well. As a strong safety, Polamalu frequently played close to the line of scrimmage, and was used in a pass rushing capacity.

Steelers’ defensive coordinator, Dick LeBeau would draw up blitzes allowing Polamalu to use his speed to get after the quarterback. Often times, he would crowd close to the offensive line, threatening to blitz before ultimately dropping back in coverage. It was a technique that created confusion for quarterbacks and occasionally helped lead to his interceptions of pass deflections.

Fitzpatrick plays free safety and is rarely used to blitz the quarterback. He has only one QB hit in his career and four tackles for loss. Lacking opportunity to make plays in the opponents’ backfield, Fitzpatrick will have to meet a specific criteria to be in the running for DPOY.

He will need to establish a new personal best in interceptions. To date, Fitzpatrick has topped out at five picks in 2019. He has scored one touchdown in each if his first three seasons, a pace he will need to continue or improve upon to take home the honors. Averaging 76 total tackles each year is a solid number for a safety, but increasing that total will definitely attract some attention his way. Remarkably fast, Fitzpatrick still does not quite match up to the astonishing foot speed of Polamalu.

Yet, if the Steelers find a way to utilize his speed to diversify their pass rush, Fitzpatrick’s appeal for individual honors is bound to increase, especially if he can record his first career sack. In short, it will take a Herculean effort from Fitzpatrick to compete for the league’s highest defensive honor. Still, as one of the league’s premier safeties, it is hard to count him out. Whether he holds the trophy at year’s end or not, it is safe to say we can expect another big season from this emerging superstar.
