Heisman winner DeVonta Smith has scary potential

By: Jacob Keppen

The question on every football fan’s mind going into the season is: who is going to be the next superstar wide receiver? Now more than ever, rookie wide receivers are making an impact on their franchises. In recent years, the football world has seen rookie wide receivers waste little time introducing themselves to stardom. Last year Justin Jefferson set the standard for all rookies, with a record-breaking 1400 yard season. Next on the list of impact rookie wide receivers: Philadelphia Eagles first-round pick Devonta Smith.

Heisman level route running. @DeVontaSmith_6

?: #NEvsPHI on @NFLNetwork (or check local listings)
?: https://t.co/PMCIWFqcJn pic.twitter.com/aiyBvfRGlJ
— NFL (@NFL) August 20, 2021

When talking about Devonta Smith, it’s important to remember the caliber of player Smith was in college. Despite being surrounded by other superstars Jerry Jeudy, Henry Ruggs, and Jaylen Waddle, Devonta Smith still rose above all of his first round counterparts. While the draft world expected Jerry Jeudy to build off his fantastic 2018 campaign and cement himself as the top wide receiver in the 2020 draft, it was actually junior Devonta Smith who experienced the breakout season.

Elevating himself from the “other Alabama wide receiver” to the main Alabama wide receiver, Smith led the Crimson Tide in receiving yards with 1,256 receiving yards, as well as touchdowns with a whopping 14. Despite being surrounded by three first-round wide receivers and a first round running back, it was Smith who became the top star on offense. Who can forget Smith’s 213-yard two-touchdown performance against eventual National Champions LSU, or his five touchdown showcase against Mississippi? Despite being surrounded by top-tier talent, Smith still managed to rise above all.

The next question Smith had to answer was could he do it with all the attention on him. With attention being spread on multiple wide receivers, Smith was able to ascend to superstardom. With Jeudy and Ruggs off to the NFL, could Smith be as good? With all the attention on him, especially after Waddle went down for most of the season with an injury, Smith put up the best season by a wide receiver in decades.

The most valuable player awards are pretty much a quarterback award. Pretty much if quarterbacks are eligible to win it, they will. Since 2000, quarterbacks have won 16 out of the possible 20 Heisman awards. The only running backs who managed to wrangle the award away from the signal callers were Reggie Bush, Mark Ingram, and Derrick Henry. Three of the greatest college backs of all time. The one other non-quarterback to win the Heisman Trophy, Devonta Smith. In an award race that didn’t really include wide receivers, the last pass-catcher to win the trophy Desmond Howard all the way back in 1991, Smith was able to be named the most outstanding player in NCAA football.

? GIVE REGGIE BUSH BACK HIS HEISMAN

pic.twitter.com/AuFmTUIaTw
— PFF College (@PFF_College) July 1, 2021

To say Devonta Smith was unguardable during his Heisman campaign would almost be an insult to the Louisiana native. Only four of the 13 teams Smith faced were able to hold him under 100 receiving yards. The only game he managed not to score was in the season opener against Missouri, a game in which Smith had 89 receiving yards. The game logs read like a created player in madden with the game difficulty on Rookie: 167 yards and two touchdowns against Georgia, 203 yards and four touchdowns against Mississippi State, 231 yards and three touchdowns against defending champions LSU, 184 yards and two touchdowns in a thrilling SEC Championship game against Florida, and finally a 215 yard three touchdown half against Ohio State in the National Championship. Nobody could stop the Bama receiver as he danced his way to multiple accolades and the 13th overall selection by the Philadelphia Eagles in the 2021 NFL Draft.

As the third receiver taken in the 2021 NFL Draft, Smith’s status as possibly the most unstoppable receiver seen in the NCAA must be remembered. Smith has every opportunity to be a transcendent star in the NFL as well. His skill set is exactly what the modern NFL is looking for. Even in limited action in the preseason, Smith showed why he was able to dominate the NCAA.

Smith is an extremely advanced technician of a route runner. While not the biggest receiver at all, Smith negates more physical defensive backs, using his exquisite release package to avoid contact at the line of scrimmage. With his first few steps, Smith puts himself at an advantage. Smith can run any route in the book, his smooth athleticism allowing him to break on a dime and accelerate through cuts. He uses his smooth athleticism along with high football iq to gain easy separation from defensive backs. With the ball in his hands, Smith is extremely slippery. He’s a dangerous threat in the screen game, and to take a short pass the difference. Finally, despite being a smaller receiver, Smith can still go up and fight for the ball in the air. Similar to Washington receiver Terry McLaurin, Devonta Smith can make catches players his size have no business making.

Smith’s playstyle immediately translates to success usually in the NFL, and he’ll have all of the opportunity in Philadelphia to be fed the ball. Despite being a rookie, Smith is far and away from the most talented receiver on the roster, looking the part in training camp. The Eagles are in desperate need of a true #1 wide receiver, and after trading up for Devonta Smith they’ll look to give him WR1 volume. There’s no other consistent threat on the roster, the rest of the wide receiver group a cast of inconsistent speedsters for the most part. The only big target to take away catches is most likely Dallas Goedert, and he hasn’t proven to be able to handle a superstar workload yet.

When it comes to Smith, it’s the perfect situation of talent meets opportunity. Devonta Smith is one of the most talented receivers to enter the draft in recent years. Smith will forever go down in history books for his play in college. The way he wins is how a lot of top receivers in the league win, including last year’s rookie standout Justin Jefferson. Philadelphia has been looking for a true wide receiver #1 for years now and the opportunity is there for Smith. Devonta Smith in Philadelphia can be a special player for years to come.

Should the Eagles keep TE Zach Ertz?

By: Jacob Keppen

Who would’ve thought just a short few years ago that the Eagles would be in this situation with Zach Ertz? Ertz seemed like a guy that would do midnight green for the rest of his career, retiring to the adulation of the fans for who he won a Super Bowl. Just like with his quarterback Carson Wentz, the situation rapidly deteriorated over the past two years.

The squabble between the team and Ertz started with what seemed to be a minor contract dispute, a minor dispute that has snowballed into a seemingly inevitable divorce. It seemed as though that separation was going to happen at the beginning of last year, with the internal problems becoming public at the beginning of the season.

The two sides managed to delay the contract talks another year, with Ertz focusing on the game last year. With Ertz coming off his career, those contract talks now just trade talks. The divorce seems inevitable, many expecting Ertz to never suit up for the Eagles again after last season. What if the separation doesn’t happen quite just yet. What if Ertz was willing to play one more season for the Eagles, just as he did last season?

Zach Ertz is still an Eagle
— Dave Kluge (@DaveKluge) July 19, 2021

Of course, if the situation with Ertz is at that level of toxicity that you have to remove him, you do so. If not, why not just keep Zach Ertz?

Every young quarterback needs a reliable go-to target, especially early in their career. As they’re still going through their growing pains, having a weapon that can consistently get it done is a blessing. Zach Ertz might never be the player he was in his prime. He might not be a guy who can be counted on to haul in 100 passes or be the top 3 tight ends he was for the Eagles in his prime. What Ertz can be is a solid, reliable pair of hands who can work off of some dynamic weapons in Devonta Smith and Dallas Goedert. He can continue to be the safety valve for the Eagles and young Jalen Hurts.

DeVonta Smith running a bench route pic.twitter.com/bxiowUm9ru
— Receiver Life (@ReceiverLife_) July 17, 2021

The logic of having to trade Zach Ertz while you still have a chance do does make some sense. Zach Ertz has only one year left on his deal. After this season he is free to leave and negotiate with teams on his own terms. Sure he will be a year older and maybe the market won’t be the best for him, but he will have the ultimate final say in the next Post-Philadelphia chapter of his career. For the Eagles though, they would get nothing. Ertz walks and goes to another team, and Philadelphia receives nothing in return for their fan-favorite tight end.

Conventional logic states that the Eagles would be fools not to try and get something for Ertz now. Unless they were bringing him back, they would’ve already penned a new deal by now, they should try getting something in a trade for Ertz.

What are the Eagles realistically going to get in return though? Zach Ertz will be turning 31 this year? He’s starting the downturn of his career. Last season after pretty much betting on himself to earn a contract that would pay him like an elite tight end, he had the worst season of his career. In 11 games, Ertz only managed to put up 335 receiving yards and a single touchdown. He’s aging, coming off the worst year of his career, is pretty much known at this point to want to move on from Philadelphia, and only has a year left on his contract. Any team that wants him can get him next year in free agency, giving up no assets.

If the situation isn’t as dire as made out to be in the media, and Ertz would be willing to gut it out one more season, his value as an experienced player who’s won a Super Bowl and can be a reliable target for Jalen Hurts is greater than whatever late-round pick the Eagles can get in return.

The departure of TE Zach Ertz from the Philadelphia Eagles seems inevitable, but at this point trade talks have dwindled. The Eagles asking price may be too high for opposing teams to pull the trigger on a trade, but when a team lands Ertz, they will be getting a difference maker.

Talks on a potential Zach Ertz trade have been ongoing for quite some time but fairly quiet of late. At least three TE-needy teams have looked into this. Eagles have made clear they won't part for nothing in return, making a release unlikely. Things could pick back up this week.
— Jeremy Fowler (@JFowlerESPN) June 1, 2021

Ertz has been one of the most productive tight ends in the NFL since 2015, and he could play a major role on a winning team. He is 30 years old and his 6’5 frame makes him a formidable red zone target. He is coming off an extremely disappointing 2020 campaign, but there was turmoil surrounding the Eagles and their quarterback situation that made it impossible for him to succeed.

He is a 3x Pro Bowler, First-Team All-Pro (2018) and a Super Bowl champion. He has 561 catches, 6078 yards and 36 career touchdowns and would be an immediate weapon for a team searching for a tight end.

Considering how inconsistent his quarterback play has been, he has surpassed expectations and has been a model of consistency. His best season of his career thus far was 2018, the year following the Eagles Super Bowl victory. He hauled in 116 catches, 1,163 yards and eight touchdowns.

These are three teams that are in need of a tight end, that would benefit immensely from an Ertz trade.

1. Green Bay Packers

The Packers trading for Ertz is not their priority with all of the uncertainty surrounding their star QB Aaron Rodgers. Part of the reason Rodgers is not happy with the organization is their lack of weapons, and commitment to helping Rodgers out on the offensive side of the ball. Ertz could go a long way in showing Rodgers how committed the Packers are, and Ertz would thrive in that offense. Ertz has never had a QB the caliber of Rodgers, and this could allow Ertz to get back to his dominant ways. This would make WR Davante Adams happy and take some of the pressure off of him, and give him more room to operate.

2. Buffalo Bills

The Bills are emerging as one of the best young teams in the NFL, led by QB Josh Allen. Their offense is dynamic, but they severely lack production from the TE position. The Bills will have to try and keep up with the loaded Kansas City Chiefs if they want to make a run at a Super Bowl, which means they should never be content with their roster. Adding a TE like Ertz would take a lot of pressure of WRs Stefon Diggs and Cole Beasley. This would make the Bills one of the most potent offenses in the NFL, and they would be impossible to stop. Opposing defensive coordinators already got a glimpse of how great Allen and this offense could be, and adding a former Super Bowl champion TE could take this offense to another level.

3. Tennesse Titans

The Titans are in need of a playmaker on offense to pair with WR A.J. Brown. TE Delanie Walker is no longer in Tennessee, which leaves an opening for Ertz to come in and take over as the lead TE. The Titans also lost WR Corey Davis in free agency, and their main focus in the offseason was addressing their defensive issues, but they should be all in on pursuing Ertz. He would fit their scheme perfectly and would be QB Ryan Tannehill’s best friend from day one.

All three of these teams could use the services of Ertz, along with many others. It has been quite on the trade front for a long time now, but with OTAs starting up and training camp right around the corner, an Ertz trade will happen sooner rather than later.

Jalen Reagor and DeVonta Smith 2021 outlook

By Jesse Moeller (Twitter: JMoeller05)

For the second consecutive season, the Eagles have drafted a Wide Receiver in the first round of the NFL draft. Last year, the Eagles took Jaelon Reagor out of TCU. The Eagles then followed it up this season, drafting Devonta Smith out of Alabama. Let us look at these two and see if they can form the perfect partnership for the 2021 season and beyond.

Batman – DeVonta Smith

Four things the @Eagles are getting in @DeVontaSmith_6

🦅 Route running
🦅 Vertical speed
🦅 Soft hands
🦅 YAC on YAC on YAC

In steps, the Slim Reaper (best nickname in the NFL) coming off one of the greatest college football seasons ever. Devonta put up video game numbers to the tune of 1.856 yards and 23 touchdowns on 117 receptions in 13 games. He went back to college for his senior year after dominating as a junior in 2019 while participating with Jerry Jeudy, Henry Ruggs, and Jalen Waddle. According to the NFL, it proved to be the correct decision as they rewarded Smith with a top 10 pick.

He is the definition of Batman. No matter what you tried to do, you could not stop him, as he continually presents problems for defenses. My jaw dropped countless times watching Smith cook opposing defenders. He is a craftsman who uses his long slight frame to offer various ways to win. He is a 6’1″ unicorn in the NFL with a wingspan the same as Collin Johnson, who is 6’6″.

While many people are worried about his weight, it is not something that should bother you. Smith has the required height and skill at the position to win against the best NFL cornerbacks consistently. He has a remarkable ability to control his body, creating angles with his frame that is flat-out unguardable.

While we would like Smith to be heavier, the lack of weight allows him to explode in and out of breaks that give him an edge at the position. He is my number two rookie wide receiver who will make sweet, sweet music with Jalen Hurts this year.

Here are my projections for Smith:
80 receptions for 1037 yards and eight touchdowns on a 21% Target Share. That equals 232 PPR fantasy points.

Robin – Jalen Reagor

Loved the nugget from @TheAudible on Jalen Reagor.

Injuries forced TCU to use him as a vertical threat, the Eagles followed suit.

He excels underneath, action the Colts used frequently with Pittman and Campbell. He could be a sneaky ppr monster.

https://t.co/ZwG8xiKPND

Originally tweeted by Jeff Bell (@4WhomJBellTolls) on May 23, 2021.

Reagor season was considered a bust by many. He suffered through injuries, as he dealt with many injuries his rookie season that cost him almost the entire first half of his rookie season. After Reagor returned in week eight, he managed to put 300 yards in those remaining nine games. That averages out to a measly 33 yards per game on 2.9 targets per game. Even if Reagor were healthy and played an entire year, we would be looking at 533 yards and 46 reception for the season.

There are not too many positives to take from his rookie season. It was never a good sign when both your 57.5% catch rate and 7.3 Yards Per Target were among the worst amongst wide receivers last year. Reagor’s inefficiency was by no means strictly on him, as Wentz was one of the worst quarterbacks in the NFL last season. Next-Gen Stats has Wentz 40th in Passer Rating (72.8), 40th in Completion Percentage Above Expected (-4.8), 34th in Average Air Yards Differential (-2.8), and 6th in Time to Throw (2.91). What do these stats say to you? For me, they paint a picture of how abysmal Wentz was, add in the injuries, and we can chalk 2020 up to a lost season for the young wideout.

Fast forward to this offseason, and we received two critical bits of news for Reagor’s dynasty outlook. The first is that Reagor is moving to the slot. A role suited for him to succeed. His two prized assets coming out are the ability to accelerate and change direction in college. Watch Reagor’s TCU tape, and you routinely see a player playing in another gear. Moving him inside gives Reagor more space to work with, where he will routinely leave defenders in the dust.

The second bit of news is something we all know. Jalen Hurts taking over as the Eagles’ starting quarterback. Watching Wentz struggle game in and game out in such a winnable division showed how lost he was in Philadelphia. Giving the reigns to Hurts allows Reagor to develop his game alongside the quarterback of the future.

Here are my 2021 Projections for Reagor:
67 receptions for 767 yards and five touchdowns on 18% Target Share. Good enough for 173.5 PPR fantasy points.

While the Eagles have frequently whiffed drafting wide receivers this last decade, I believe the Eagles have finally found their Batman and Robin.

Why the Eagles Should Give Jalen Hurts a Chance

Jacob Keppen

It seems quarterback controversy never leaves Philadelphia. Last week I took a look at the top five Eagles quarterbacks since 2000, and the consistent theme I noticed was quarterback controversy. Even with his success in Philadelphia, bringing the Eagles to multiple conference championships, there was still a bit of a contentious relationship with the fans and Donovan McNabb. There was almost a yearly quarterback controversy after McNabb too, Philadelphia loves a quarterback controversy.

We all hoped the madness would stop in 2016. The hope was that Carson Wentz would be the guy in Philadelphia for the foreseeable future. Wentz would be the next McNabb, but with more of the fanbase behind him. Sadly this did not turn out to be the case, the fanbase almost divided in half on Carson Wentz by the end of his tenure in Philadelphia.

Here we are about two months to the draft, slightly unsure of where to go as a franchise moving forward. I’m proposing an idea though. How about, we don’t have a quarterback controversy. For once, let’s throw all of our support as an organization and fanbase behind one guy. Let’s give Jalen Hurts a real chance to prove that he can be our next franchise quarterback.

Jalen Hurts is the perfect embodiment of Philadelphia. He is tough as nails. He does not back down from pressure, doesn’t cower from adversity. Hurts has seen his fair share of adversity, a lot more than the average quarterback prospect.

In 2016, Jalen Hurts became the first true freshman to start at quarterback for Alabama since 1984. He led the Crimson Tide to the National Championship where they would lose to Deshaun Watson’s Clemson Tigers. The next year at the National Championship, Hurts would be benched at halftime. His spot as a starter at Alabama was no more. He didn’t create controversy, sticking with Alabama the next year before transferring to Oklahoma for the 2019 season. Given a chance to be a starter again, Hurts brought the Sooners to the college football playoffs and finished second in the Heisman race.

Jalen Hurts showed throughout college why he has the intangibles to be a star quarterback in the NFL. There’s much more to being a quarterback in the NFL than just straight up on field ability. You have to have the intangibles as well. You have to be able to rally your men and lead them to victory. Jalen Hurts the past year has been praised tremendously for his great leadership. Hurts has been praised by coaches, teammates, and nearly every media member who has come into contact with him.

Philadelphia is one of the hardest places to play in. As Jason Peters said, Philadelphia will eat you up if you don’t bring it. You need to be able to bring it every down, have the mental and physical toughness, leadership ability, and overall it-factor. Ultimately Jalen Hurts has proven over the years that he is bred to thrive in a place like Philadelphia.

Of course you need to be able to play the game of football. Just being a great guy and leader doesn’t make you a starting quarterback. You still have to show something on the field. I believe that given his small sample size, with the situation he was in, Jalen Hurts showed enough to warrant a shot at the job.

Despite not having the best of receivers, an injury ridden offensive line, and head coach that was on his way out of the door, Jalen Hurts still managed to have some magical moments in his 3 ½ games as the Eagles starter. In his first game as a starter, he willed the Eagles to a 24-21 win over the then 10-2 New Orleans Saints. He has over 100 yards on the ground.

The next week he battled Kyler Murray and the Cardinals, throwing for over 300 yards and three touchdowns in a close loss. The next game against Dallas wasn’t his best, maybe calling only six rushing plays in the 2nd half wasn’t the best idea, but he still battled and threw for over 300 yards. It wasn’t all pretty but he was a young quarterback without a preseason, thrown into the fire without much help who showed a lot of grit and good play.

Is Jalen Hurts the future of the Philadelphia Eagles? Is he the next star franchise quarterback who’s going to lead the Eagles back to greatness? In all honesty, nobody knows yet. Nobody knows that he isn’t that possible franchise quarterback for the Eagles though. No player can be judged based on just four starts. Peyton Manning threw 11 interceptions in his first four games. Russell Wilson threw as many interceptions as touchdowns and did not eclipse 200 passing yards in any of his first four games.

Maybe Jalen Hurts isn’t going to be as good those guys, but imagine if they were written off after just four games. Imagine if no quarterback was given time to grow and develop. Hurts has shown you a lot of bright things though a ton of uncertainty and he deserves the shot to prove himself next year.

Where Does Michael Vick Stand?

By: Jacob Keppen

With the 2020 season in the rearview, the NFL is successfully two decades into the 2000s. The Eagles have seen a lot of change over the past 20 years, including their first-ever Super Bowl victory. With Carson Wentz being traded before the 2021 season, now is the perfect time to look back at the Eagles quarterbacks over the past 20 years. Looking strictly at quarterbacks who started a majority of games in a season (sorry for all you Jeff Garcia, Mark Sanchez, and Kevin Kolb fans out there) and judging off of the legacy left behind, here are the top five Eagles quarterbacks since the year 2000.

5: Sam Bradford

Well someone had to be number five”¦. A former first overall pick, Sam Bradford’s career with the Rams was hampered by constant injuries.. After looking like he was finally reaching his potential in 2013, Sam Bradford tragically tore his ACL. Bradford would tear that same ACL once again the next preseason, missing the entire 2014 season.

In Chip Kelly’s mind, this meant it was the perfect time to trade for the former first overall pick. In a trade that was extremely puzzling and upsetting to the Eagles fanbase, the Birds traded fan favorite quarterback Nick Foles, a fourth, and a second-round pick(!) for Sam Bradford and a fifth. Bradford would have an extremely mediocre season with the Eagles, leading to Philadelphia trading up for Carson Wentz in the 2016 NFL Draft. Bradford would net a first round pick from the Vikings that would end up being Derek Barnett. It’s not great when the best moments of a player’s tenure were the players acquired as a result of getting rid of him. The Sam Bradford trade will go down as one of the worst moments from the maligned later years of the Chip Kelly era.

4: Michael Vick

Michael Vick was one of the league’s brightest young stars before it all was gone due to his involvement with a dog fighting ring in 2007. He was suspended for two years, and spent 21 months in a federal prison. Vick was given a second opportunity with the Eagles, signed by Andy Reid in 2009. The highlight of the short lived Vick era in Philadelphia was the 2010 season that saw Michael Vick lead the Eagles to the playoffs. Vick made the Pro Bowl and was named comeback player of the year. While he wouldn’t see the same level of success over the next two years, Michael Vick revitalized his NFL career and gave Eagles fans a fun year after a few years of quarterback controversy.

I think the biggest lasting legacy of Vick was how he turned himself around with his chance in Philadelphia. He has done great work as an animal rights activist since his involvement in the dog fighting ring. Given a chance in Philadelphia, Michael Vick worked hard both on and off the field and turned a lot of fan’s negative opinions about him around.

3: Carson Wentz

Carson Wentz will go down as one of the most polarizing figures in Eagles history, despite being a pretty laid back person himself. Surprisingly, Carson Wentz had the 2nd longest tender in Philadelphia on this list. At the start of his career it looked like Wentz was going to be the face of the franchise for years to come. After an up and down rookie campaign, Carson Wentz made everyone believers in 2017. Many Philly fans still believe years later that he deserved to win MVP. Had he not been injured, I feel Carson’s career would’ve gone a lot different in Philadelphia, and he’d still be here today. Unfortunately, as well all know, Wentz tore his ACL against the Rams in week 13, and then watched backup Nick Foles capture the hearts of the fanbase and win Philadelphia their first Super Bowl.

I don’t believe Carson Wentz, no matter how good he played, was able to ever truly escape quarterback controversy from some fans and media (a noticeable theme when looking at all of these quarterbacks). It’s a shame because if you look at his career, Wentz had a really good tenure with the Eagles before the implosion this past season. Wentz, despite only playing five seasons in Philadelphia, is fourth in: wins, touchdowns, completions, and passing yards.

When healthy, Carson Wentz looked like a hard working franchise quarterback that the team and fan base could rally behind. The problem was that he couldn’t always stay healthy, which might be unfair seeing how he can’t control his own health. This past season, his worst as a quarterback, certainly did not help his status amongst fans, with a good amount of the fan base already divided on him. He might be a divisive figure now, but I feel once there’s been some time removed from the trade we’ll all be able to really appreciate Carson’s time in Philadelphia.

2: Donovan McNabb

For years, Donovan McNabb was the guy in Philadelphia. The Eagles were at their most successful in the early 2000s. Donovan McNabb was one of the key components for their great run in the early 2000s that saw them reach four conference championships and a super bowl. McNabb holds virtually every record an Eagles quarterback can hold. He is the franchise record holder in: wins, passing yards, and passing touchdowns.

McNabb was the gold standard for Eagles quarterbacks for years, and really looking back at it, he was the last true franchise quarterback for the Eagles. All of the quarterbacks listed above weren’t the long term solution for the Eagles at quarterback. Carson Wentz played the longest out of all of them for the Eagles, but he still didn’t have the longevity of guys from years past such as Ron Jaworski or Randall Cunningham. McNabb lasted longer than all of them. McNabb was truly the last franchise quarterback for the Philadelphia Eagles and he accomplished everything there was to accomplish”¦ except bringing Philadelphia a Super Bowl.

1: Nick Foles

Nick Foles might not have the decorated career that Donovan McNabb had with the Eagles. He may not lead the Eagles in all of the statistical categories that Donovan does. He may not have started as many games or as many seasons as some of the players on this list. But in the end, Nick Foles won Philadelphia their first ever Super Bowl.

The goal of football is to win. Every team and every player in the NFL holds the same dream and goal, to hoist the Lombardi trophy at the end of the year. Philadelphia’s passionate fanbase waited years for another championship. “Just one before I die” was the saying of many older fans who had not witnessed a championship from their beloved Eagles since 1960. Philadelphia is first and foremost a football town. Sure fans love the Phillies, Sixers, and Flyers, but not in the same way these fans love football. It’s ingrained in the culture of Philadelphia. Nick Foles bringing a championship to Phillly was one of the most magical moments the city had ever seen.

In all honesty, Nick Foles’ entire career as an Eagle was magical. Nick Foles has such an interesting career. In every other city that he’s played in he’s been below average. Yet as an Eagle, he has led the Franchise to the playoffs three times, including the magical Super Bowl run in 2017. There’s a statue of Nick Foles outside of the Linc for a reason. He captured the hearts of the city time after time and will go down as a winner who brought Philadelphia their Super Bowl.
