Who is the best WR target for the Packers?

By: Jake Rajala

The Green Bay Packers have a <s>golfing </s>football legend in Aaron Rodgers, but they could still benefit their offensive firepower by adding a WR to their roster. With that said, I’m going to simply untwine three WR targets for the Pack at this moment.

Where would you like to see Julio Jones continue his career? pic.twitter.com/CSDtmCmgJo
— NFL on CBS ? (@NFLonCBS) June 1, 2022

Julio Jones

The potential Hall of Famer Julio Jones still has some gas left in the tank, but it’s unclear where he will play next. I expect Julio to target a team with an MVP-caliber QB and space for him to be very involved. It would ideal for the Packers to be near the top of his wish list. Maurice Moton of Bleacher Report also suggests that Julio is a romantic fit for the Packers at this stage in his career.

Emmanuel Sanders

I believe Emmanuel Sanders would be a really good pick-up for GB. Sanders played with Drew Brees and Josh Allen, so it may be time for him to play with another very superb QB. Sanders would also be a less expensive option than the likes of Julio and OBJ. Christian Watson could learn a thing or two from the savvy veteran in Sanders.

Emmanuel Sanders is worth every single penny the Bills end up paying him and more pic.twitter.com/09vZzy2whI
— Kyle Nap (@KyleNaps) October 7, 2021

Cole Beasley

The second former Bills WR on this list would also be a sexy fit for the Pack. Cole Beasley made second-team All-Pro in 2020 and he could aspire to re-create magic with the mythical A-Rod. Beasley would be an upgrade over Randall Cobb and he would an excellent veteran presence, too. Sanders and Beasley would flat out be smart options for the Packers.

By: Jake Rajala

The New Orleans Saints recently brought back wide receiver Tre’Quan Smith, according to NBC Sports. After the Saints failed to acquire Deshaun Watson, the Saints also have re-signed Jameis Winston and signed Daniel Sorenson.

On 4th and 2 Teddy Bridgewater throws it right to Daniel Sorenson, who runs it back for 6.

The Broncos are dead in the water. pic.twitter.com/g6i0voRRlp
— Joe Rowles (@JoRo_NFL) December 6, 2021

I still *really* expect the Saints to be aggressive in free agency this offseason. The Saints clearly showed that they are pedal to the metal with their push for Watson, I’d expect them to strongly push in their “Super Bowl window” for more talent. With that said, here are a few profiles that Dennis Allen could demand.

Emmanuel Sanders

The 2021 Buffalo Bills WR Emmanual Sanders has familiarity with the Saints, talent at age 35, and he could be the starting slot WR for the Saints in 2022. Sanders registered 626 and a career-high 14.9 yards YPC in 2021 after hauling 726 yards in 2020 with the Saints. It is also impossible to imagine the Saints will sign Jarvis Landry, who is seeking a $20 million per year contract. Sanders would ultimately be an affordable, smart fit.

Well, let’s go for the #Saints trifecta: Emmanuel Sanders’ break is not as slick as the first two, but technically the most demanding by far.

Imagine running into a full lunge and the moving quickly through that lunge without falling…you don’t have to, because he shows us. pic.twitter.com/m5adSekZlk
— Matt Waldman (@MattWaldman) November 9, 2020

Ndamukong Suh

I’d love to see Loomis give the golden ticket to Ndamukong Suh. The former Buccaneers DL can play anywhere on the DL, be a threat against the run and pass, and be a true iron-man defender for the Saints defense (0 missed games since 2011). It would also be poetic if he switched to another NFC South team with a cream of the crop run defense. I’d want the Saints to overpay for Suh more than any other free agent before the draft.

The last time Ndamukong Suh and Aaron Rodgers faced off…

Suh clearly has some hatred towards Aaron. pic.twitter.com/0xXHJZgKS4
— Dov Kleiman (@NFL_DovKleiman) January 19, 2021

Blaine Gabbert

The Saints need to add a backup quarterback that has some starting experience. It’s clear that Allen wasn’t a fan of Taysom Hill’s performance against the Bucs last season and the Saints have stated that the Hill experiment at QB is dead. The Saints also witnessed their 2021 backup QB Trevor Sieman leave in free agency to the Chicago Bears. Gabbert has arm talent, modest youth (32 years old), and knowledge of the Bucs playbook.

Blessing your timeline with Blaine Gabbert to Torrey Smith in overtime to beat the Bears.
The 49ers QB spot is a question mark

By: Andy Davies

The San Francisco 49ers are one of the most successful franchises in NFL history. Only the New England Patriots and Pittsburgh Steelers (both 6) have more Super Bowl wins than the 49ers (5). The 49ers’ five Super Bowls all came between the years of 1981 and 1994. They have lost two since, in the 2012 and 2019 seasons. The quarterbacks that led the 49ers to the Lombardi Trophy were Hall of Famers Joe Montana and Steve Young. Three of those five wins saw Montana as the starter and Young as the backup.

Young is seen by many as the best backup quarterback in history, considering the gold jacket that he earned despite many years as the backup to Montana. He would win a Super Bowl as the starter after the franchise moved on from Montana. Ever since Young decided to hang up his cleats, the 49ers have struggled to find his replacement. Have they found the guy in Trey Lance?

Before the 49ers practice begins today, No. 3 overall pick Trey Lance signed his four-year, $34.1 million fully-guaranteed contract.
— Adam Schefter (@AdamSchefter) July 28, 2021

Perhaps, but here is why the quarterback situation involving Lance and current starter Jimmy Garoppolo could prevent the 49ers from winning the NFC West during the 2021 season.

Struggles Since Young

Jeff Garcia was the man to come in for Young. During his five seasons in the Bay, he threw for 113 touchdowns and 56 interceptions as well as 16,408 passing yards. He had a 35-36 record as a starter for the 49ers in the regular season and a 1-2 record in the postseason, meaning he never hit the heights of his predecessor.

Alex Smith was the number one overall pick in 2005, shattering Aaron Rodgers’ dreams. However, he was a good quarterback, not a great quarterback. Colin Kaepernick replaced Smith and took the 49ers to the Super Bowl. They ended up losing to the Baltimore Ravens in a game often called the ”˜Blackout Bowl’. Kaepernick failed to live up to the standards he set that season.

He would be kicked out of the league for taking the knee in a protest against police brutality in 2016. He has not played a snap in the NFL since. Jimmy Garoppolo was traded from the Patriots to the 49ers midway through the 2017 season. He gave hope to the organization after winning all five of the games he started in 2017. The fanbase had hope going into the 2018 season.

Many non-49ers fans had San Francisco down as their dark horse for the season. A season-ending injury to Garoppolo in Week 3 saw the starting role shared between Nick Mullens and C.J. Beathard. However, the 49ers finished 4-12 as they went into 2019 with the second overall pick. Nick Bosa was selected and transformed the defense of San Francisco and Jimmy G had the best season of his career. He threw for 3,978 passing yards, 27 touchdowns and 13 interceptions. Despite these stats, Garoppolo saw his production limited in the NFC Championship game as the coaching staff decided to use more of their running game. This led to many questions leading to the Super Bowl. The 49ers threw away a ten-point lead in the fourth quarter as they would end up losing to the Kansas City Chiefs in Super Bowl 54.

Garoppolo was criticized heavily for an overthrown pass to Emmanuel Sanders that would have given San Francisco back the lead. His 2020 season saw a mixture of poor form and injury. During the 2021 offseason, the 49ers traded up with the Miami Dolphins to gain the number three overall pick. They took Lance with the pick, showcasing their intentions to eventually move off from Garoppolo. There is now talk of whether San Francisco and head coach Kyle Shanahan will start Lance in week one. The other scenarios discussed are either Lance coming in mid-season or sitting out the whole campaign as the backup to Garoppolo. The uncertainty will have a significant impact on the 49ers’ season.

The Strength of the NFC West

This is a problem that will affect all four teams in the best division in the NFL. There is a chance that all four teams can make the playoffs. Los Angeles has an exciting new quarterback in 2009 first overall pick Matthew Stafford. Both the Seattle Seahawks and Arizona Cardinals have quarterbacks in Russell Wilson and Kyler Murray that they would never dream of trading away. Meanwhile, the 49ers’ starting quarterback is largely unpopular by fans, due to a mixture of the overthrown pass in the Super Bowl, his poor 2020 campaign and his injury record.

San Francisco has the least trusted quarterback in the division. With the position being one of the most crucial in all sports, it does not bode well for a team when there is uncertainty in the position. Garoppolo may be benched at some point during the season for Lance. However, the 49ers would be putting a rookie that will still be learning the system into the toughest division in the NFL.

Learning From Mahomes, Jackson, Tua and Burrow

If San Francisco are to help Lance succeed, they will need to take some lessons from recent draft classes. Patrick Mahomes, widely seen as the best quarterback in the league, spent all but one game of his 2017 rookie season as a backup to Alex Smith. The Chiefs then traded Smith the following offseason and Mahomes has never looked back. In his first three full seasons as a starter in the NFL, he has reached two Super Bowls, winning one. He has also been crowned MVP and Super Bowl MVP and reached three successive AFC Championship games. All three have been at home. On the flip side, 2020 first overall pick Joe Burrow started in week one of his rookie year. He wouldn’t last the season, only playing ten games before injury curtailed his first NFL campaign. He was impressive before his injury but there are no guarantees he will be the same player when he returns.

Lamar Jackson was a backup to Joe Flacco during his 2018 rookie year but won the starting role midseason. He has since gone on to win an MVP award and is the future of the franchise. Meanwhile, the Miami Dolphins brought Tua Tagovailoa in mid-season but he struggled in his rookie season. He is seen to already be on the hot seat, with many feeling the Dolphins rushed him in. These examples all show there are reasons for the 49ers to be hasty when it comes to choosing when to bring Lance into the starting role.

Lance Or Garoppolo In 2021?

The 49ers will have to decide soon who their starter will be in 2021. Considering Lance has only played one full season (2019), he is likely to start the season as the backup. He only threw for a combined total of 31 passing attempts, two touchdowns and 1 interception across the 2018 and 2020 seasons, albeit the latter campaign being disrupted by the pandemic. He is likely to be a work in progress but his 28 touchdowns and 0 interceptions in 2019 mean that he is one for the future.

Garoppolo will likely start in week one but it was clear from the NFC Championship game that Shanahan doesn’t completely trust him.

Jimmy G is a capable quarterback but his health is a concern. Expect Garoppolo to remain as the starter provided the 49ers are winning games but for Lance to come in should Garoppolo either be injured or start the season poorly.

49ers’ HC Kyle Shanahan said today that he would be “very surprised” if rookie first-round pick Trey Lance started Week 1 at Detroit. pic.twitter.com/GXkonYMW84
— Adam Schefter (@AdamSchefter) August 2, 2021

Should this happen, this will be the end of Garoppolo’s time in San Francisco. Depending on timing, he will then be traded either before the deadline or in the 2022 offseason.

Can The 49ers Returning Players Avoid A Repeat Of 2020?

This is key if the 49ers are to challenge for both the NFC West and the NFC. After earning the number one seed and reaching Super Bowl 54 during the 2019 campaign, San Francisco finished 6-10 in 2020 and bottom of the division. A ”˜Super Bowl Hangover’ played its part but the main cause of such a decline was down to a colossal amount of injuries the team suffered. Along with the aforementioned Garoppolo, the 49ers also saw Bosa, Dee Ford, George Kittle, Raheem Mostert, Deebo Samuel and Solomon Thomas miss large chunks of the 2020 season due to injury.

San Francisco had 33 players reported questionable and there were 186 occasions when the 49ers reported a player on injured reserve. They had the second-most injuries of any team in the NFL over the past twenty years. Should all these players come back, then this 49ers roster will be one of the best in the league. This will make life much easier for whoever the San Francisco starting quarterback is.

However, from the strength of the division to the uncertainty at quarterback, San Francisco will find it tough to win the NFC West.

Michael Thomas reception king in 2021?

by Michael Obermuller

In 2020, Stefon Diggs led the NFL in receptions with 127 during his inaugural season in Buffalo. It was a legendary campaign for Bills’ new WR1, but he’s still more of a newcomer when it comes to this honor. The recent king of catches has been New Orleans Saints star Michael Thomas, and he’s the only player to actually top Diggs’ 2020 output.

Stefon Diggs had 127 receptions, catching 76.5% of his targets. The only player with more receptions and a higher catch rate was Michael Thomas, in his record-breaking 2019 https://t.co/YBm7KCb2ni pic.twitter.com/4Dt8zZro1o
— Pro Football Reference (@pfref) January 6, 2021

It was a rough 2020 for MT, starting with a high ankle sprain in Week 1. Then, after an altercation on the practice field before his expected Week 5 return, Thomas was benched and fined for breaking team rules. Things got worse from there, as the wide-out did not end up returning until Week 9 (injury flare ups). After six games on the field, Thomas finished the year off it again, joining the injured reserve before Week 15.

“Can’t Guard Mike” was the receptions leader in both 2018 and ’19, and there’s no reason to believe that he cannot take back this title again in 2021. Here’s why.

1. Career Consistency

The New Orleans Saints WR1 caught 149 passes two seasons ago, totaling 1,725 yards and nine touchdowns through the air. The next closest pass-catcher was running back Christian McCaffrey, with 116 receptions. This was not just a career season by MT, it was a campaign that will go down in the NFL history books as one of the greatest of all-time. Thomas was never a one-hit wonder either. He also led the NFL in receptions in 2018 (125), and finished third in 2017 (104).

Just a little bit of info on how dominant Michael Thomas was in PPR leagues in 2019

Difference in number of receptions between the league leader and the #2 WR:

2012- 4
2013- 3
2014- 18
2015- 0
2016- 1
2017- 3
2018- 10 (Also MT)
2019- 45 ??
— The Commish (@TheCommishFFP) May 13, 2020

In fact, since his rookie season in 2016, MT has only caught less than 100 passes twice; 92 as a rookie (which is actually pretty ridiculous) and 40 during his injury-ruined 2020 campaign. This is one of the most consistent players in all of football. Not wide receivers, players. No wide-out has been as steady as Thomas in terms of receptions though, and that includes rivals like DeAndre Hopkins and Davante Adams. He is currently averaging 7.3 receptions per game throughout his career, with a 77.6 percent catch rate.

2. Stats Without Brees

One of the arguments against Thomas has always been that he plays with future Hall of Fame quarterback Drew Brees, but this is an unfair critique of MT’s game. Whenever Brees has missed time in recent years, his top wide receiver has performed just as impressively without him, if not more so.

WR Michael Thomas’ Stats with Bridgewater as Starter (3 Games):

Receptions: 25
Yards: 331
Touchdowns: 3
— Pro Saints Talk (@ProSaintsTalk) October 7, 2019

The stats above are from three games with Teddy Bridgewater in 2019. Thomas averaged 8.3 catches per game during that span, which is actually higher than that 7.3 career average. Brees also went down in 2020, and MT produced yet again (and with lingering injuries and Taysom Hill at QB this time). During four games with Hill throwing the ball, Thomas caught 30 passes for 343 yards, which averaged out to 7.5 receptions per game.

Clearly, MT doesn’t care who’s throwing him the football, so why would it matter if Jameis Winston (or Hill again) is his quarterback in 2021? If anything, Winston is known as a gunslinger who actually led the NFL in passing yardage in 2019. The Saints may also play from behind more with Jameis or Taysom at QB, which generally means more passing attempts and wide receiver targets. Thomas will be just fine without Brees, after all his nickname is Can’t Guard Mike for a reason.

3. Sean Payton

NOLA general manager Mickey Loomis extended Thomas in 2019. The five year deal was worth a record-breaking $96 million-plus. That is an expensive weapon, and don’t think for a second that head coach Sean Payton won’t milk that weapon for every penny so long as he’s wearing a Saints jersey. We are talking about one of the most creative offensive minds the game has ever seen, with one of the best pure route runners of the NFL today.

Win Percentage

Bill Belichick
w/ Tom Brady: .780
w/ Brady’s Backups: .650

Sean Payton
w/ Drew Brees: .609
w/ Brees’ Backups: .625

Ron Rivera
w/ Cam Newton: .553
w/ Cam’s Backups: .700

Peyton Manning
Career: .702
Backups: .304
— Scott Barrett (@ScottBarrettDFB) October 20, 2019

Whichever route New Orleans goes at quarterback, Thomas will be a major part of it. Outside of 2020, MT has averaged 150.5 targets per season in Payton’s offense, and the HC has already proven he can win without Brees just like the wide-out has proven he can put up numbers without his former QB. This is not meant to disparage Brees, but instead credit a couple of the key influencers on his career. The Saints have also lost WR2 Emmanuel Sanders and TE Jared Cook in free agency, meaning Payton may have to rely on his WR1 more than usual this season.

Two things are for certain; the Saints offense will score in 2021, and Michael Thomas will catch many passes so long as he’s on the field. He may even reclaim his crown.
