Expect the Chargers defense to shine in 2022

By: Jake Rajala

The Los Angeles Chargers have a steaming hot offense led by former Oregon Duck Justin Herbert (5,014 passing yards and 38 passing touchdowns in 2021), but let’s not forget about their blood-thirsty defense which recently added former Defensive Player of The Year winner Khalil Mack and interception magnet J.C. Jackson. The Chargers defense will certainly make opponents feel like they’re on the walk of shame in 2022.

brandon staley: "khalil mack :)"

khalil mack: "brandon staley :)" pic.twitter.com/Ezvml34jlu
— Los Angeles Chargers (@chargers) March 22, 2022

The Chargers defense impressively ranked 13th in passing yards allowed last season. Although, they did bleed against the run (30th in rushing yards allowed) and they weren’t sexy in sacking opposing quarterbacks (35 sacks).

In 2022 — Chargers fans should be filled with bliss about the potential for their defense. Mack (31 years old) is still a very good football player & he was on pace for one of his best seasons a season ago. The former Buffalo defender ousted six sacks, 7 QB hits, and six tackles for loss in seven contests. It must be noted that his pals on defense in Los Angeles are superior to his friends around him in Chi-town. His edge-rushing mate, Joey Bosa (who may not be better than Robert Quinn), will continue to be a headache for opposing QBs. The older Bosa bro ousted 10.5 sacks, 20 QB hits, and a whopping 7 forced fumbles in 2021 (which led him to make his fourth straight Pro Bowl selection). The Chargers undoubtedly hold a Top-5 pass-rushing tandem in the league – which will be a key reason for their squad significantly improving in sacking opposing QBs from last season.

Joey Bosa really hit the Halo teabag celly today ??? pic.twitter.com/VKTdrFS5QW
— Footballism (@FootbaIIism) December 13, 2021

The Chargers secondary is where the magic happens. The imposing J.C. Jackson (17 ints in the past two seasons combined) will link arms with Derwin James Jr. to make life a living hell for opposing signal-callers. James Jr. — who garnered first-team All-Pro honors as a rookie — became the highest-paid safety in the league last August. His baggage has been his inability to stay healthy (11 missed contests in 2019 & MIA for the entire 2020 season). If he can stay healthy, he’s unequivocally a Top-5 safety and a game-changer. The CB2 and x-factor on the Chargers defense is Asante Samuel Jr (son of Asante Samuel). He ousted two interceptions as a rookie last season. He will be really called on to slow down the likes of Patrick Mahomes, Derek Carr, and Russell Wilson moving forward.

I feel excited to imagine the damage that the Chargers defense will enforce on opponents. They should dramatically take steps forward from 2021 in stopping the run, the pass, and burying opposing QBs in the ground. The Chargers offense may have a potential MVP winner at QB, but I would be starstruck if Andy Reid, Josh McDaniel, and Nathaniel Hackett don’t lose sleep over the maniacs that reign on the Chargers defense.

This NFL offseason has seen no other division improve more than the AFC West. The Russell Wilson trade is the blockbuster one. But both the Las Vegas Raiders and Los Angeles Chargers made moves that now see them as Super Bowl contenders. So, who is more likely between the two? Let us find out.

Coming Soon Fall 2022 ?@derekcarrqb x @tae15adams pic.twitter.com/ttVWdGeoXl
— Las Vegas Raiders (@Raiders) March 18, 2022

Las Vegas Raiders:

The Davante Adams trade changes the landscape of the NFL.

It immediately strengthens an AFC team as the Raiders become Super Bowl contenders whilst affecting a top team in the NFC. Rodgers and Green Bay’s chances of winning the Super Bowl have dramatically altered.

Adams is now entering the peak of his career. Add to the fact they have a Pro Bowl slot receiver in Hunter Renfrow, an elite tight end in Darren Waller, and a good core of running backs such as former Patriot Brandon Bolden, Josh Jacobs, and Kenyan Drake.

Not to mention Derek Carr, who will relish the opportunity to play the best football of his career. The Carr-Adams partnership will be one that will see TV games for the Raiders.

On defense, they also signed Chandler Jones. One of the best pass rushers of the last ten years, coupled with Maxx Crosby, who had 42 pressures last season in the NFL. It forms one of the deadliest pass-rushing duos in the league.

General manager Dave Ziegler and head coach Josh McDaniels have done brilliantly because their units elevated from particularly good to elite.

Despite the Raiders needing safety and not having first and second-round picks, it puts them in a strong position with elite partnerships on offense and defense.

J.C. JACKSON WILL TAKE THAT 88 YARDS TO THE HOUSE! #ForeverNE

?: #NEvsCAR on CBS
?: NFL app pic.twitter.com/jpx2XlRZ0D
— NFL (@NFL) November 7, 2021

Los Angeles Chargers:

With the addition of J.C Jackson, the Chargers have fulfilled the need for a cornerback who provides great man coverage. He has only allowed eight TD passes in four seasons.

Staley can now develop a better defense that is more in tune with his desires. After having a terrible defense last year, upgrades were necessary. The Khalil Mack trade was a high priority one.

Despite playing only seven games in 2021, Mack was productive when he played. He had six sacks with seven QB hits in those games. He has not shown signs of being injury-prone, thus not losing his touch yet.

Mack also has one of the best edge rushers in Joey Bosa opposite him. His 10.5 sacks and 20 QB hits last season were good, but he has shown better in the past. With the addition of Mack, Bosa could get back to his absolute best.

Like the Raiders, the Chargers have formed a formidable pass-rush tandem that will make any NFL team nervous. Staley would like to get the best out of Mack as he did in 2018. The signing of Sebastian Joseph Day is also a step up, replacing DT Justin Jones.

On offense, they have added tight end Gerald Everett, operating as a replacement for Jared Cook.

Everett is a weapon in the passing game but adds much-needed youth and depth at the position. With Tre’ McKitty and Donald Parham developing, Everett becomes the top tight end of the roster.

But the Chargers should be excited that Justin Herbert and Brandon Staley are entering their second year together. Both will develop to become better collectively.

We have seen that happen in the same division with Patrick Mahomes and Andy Reid in 2019. It should be no surprise if Herbert and Staley become a better pairing overall. If these two combined to become a top-five offense in year one, they could be the best in year two.

Joey Bosa and Khalil Mack on the same D-line pic.twitter.com/ESWf8RwH4q
— Pardon My Take (@PardonMyTake) March 10, 2022

So, who is more likely to win the Super Bowl?

In terms of QBs, the Chargers are with teams such as Los Angeles Rams, Kansas City Chiefs, and Buffalo Bills. Justin Herbert’s 2021 season was phenomenal. But the pieces around Herbert are not as exciting as Carr’s Raiders.

Should both teams make the playoffs, the Raiders will have the broader weapons on both sides of the field, especially on offense, to make a deeper run. The difference is simple. The Chargers do not have a future Hall of Famer in Davante Adams.

Can the Chargers have the best defense in the NFL?

By: Jake Rajala

The Los Angeles Chargers have easily had the most successful offseason in 2022 thus far. Brandon Staley’s squad has brought back Mike Williams, traded for Khalil Mack, signed J.C. Jackson, and has made other under-the-radar free-agent signings. In particular, the Chargers defense has received a significant boost in 2022.

With that enunciated, the question is: what is the most dreamy expectation of the Chargers new-look defense? Well, I believe the Chargers should be confident that they can display one of the most potent defensive units in the NFL next season.

Joey Bosa with the stab/club. Use the stab to get the blocker thinking power, then take it away as you reduce your hitting surface & clear the outside hand with the club. Have a #passrush plan! #chargers pic.twitter.com/byBs1B4mhF
— DLineVids (@dlinevids1) March 13, 2022

The Chargers were the 12th best pass defense (passing YPG allowed) in the NFL last season. Meanwhile, the J.C. Jackson-led Patriots pass defense was the second-best pass defense last season. Interestingly, the Khalil Mack-led Bears defense displayed the third-best pass defense last season. I really believe the Chargers defense that already featured the very talented Derwin James and Joey Bosa last season can be a Top 5 pass defense in the NFL next season.

I fully understand Jackson and Mack weren’t solely responsible for their defensive success last season. Mack had a ton of help from Robert Quinn and Jackson was benefited from the defensive guru Bill Belichick. I still believe the combination of talent from the 2021 Chargers defense joined by Mack and Jackson should propel them into a Top 5 unit. Well, why do I not feel bold enough to pin them as favorites to boast the top pass defense in the league? I simply believe Russell Wilson and Patrick Mahomes will make it difficult for them to be the NFL’s top pass defense.

Khalil Mack is still really good at football. Here is a thread from this season pic.twitter.com/AhHnX1gEBO
— Ryan Sampson (@RyanMSampson) March 10, 2022

The Chargers might have had a modest pass defense in 2021, but they were far from an impressive defense overall. There were only two teams that gave up more points per game than the Chargers last season. I really believe Jackson will help the Chargers give up fewer big plays and Mack will “hulk smash” and be helpful in numerous ways, as well. The Chargers might play in the wild AFC West, but that’s not an excuse to be a completely dreadful defense. After all, the Denver Broncos had the second-best defense in PPG allowed in 2021. I expect the Chargers to take a significant jump in this pivotal category in 2022 (Top 10) and yield a terrifying defense moving forward.
