Latest takeaways from the Rams depth chart

By: Jake Rajala

The reigning Super Bowl champions, Los Angeles Rams, recently released their first depth chart after their training camp has eclipsed. With that stated, I’m going to simply untwine five takeaways from the Rams depth chart.

Aaron Donald on Ernest Jones:

"When I'm in there early in the morning in the weight room, I see him and Bobby (Wagner) in there every morning. He's attached to his hip right now, learning everything he can."
— Stu Jackson (@StuJRams) August 5, 2022

Jake Funk

The Rams RB Jake Funk (seventh-round pick in 2021 draft), who only accumulated 5 rushing yds last season, should be a lot more involved in 2022. Funk is listed behind a Cam Akers and Darrell Henderson Jr. sandwich. He is set to be a FA in 2025.

Brandon Powell

The explosive Brandon Powell is primed to be the starting KR and PR in Week 1. Powell is undoubtedly a vital, unique part of the Rams puzzle. He recorded a punt return TD on only six punt returns in 2021. Furthermore, he averaged 26 yards per kick return on eight kick returns.

Per Rams Wire, Powell injured his knee at mini-camp, but Sean McVay isn’t concerned about the incident.

Ben Skowronek

The Rams showcase the reigning OPOY Cooper Kupp and the fresh, top-tier wideout Allen Robinson. The third starting WR is none other than Ben Skowronek. The 2021 seventh-round pick has a big opportunity in wake of Van Jefferson’s injury. The Rams OC Liam Coen feels like he is a WR that LA can rely on.

Rams release it's first unofficial depth chart. Looks like Ben Skowronek has edged out Tutu Atwell in WR. #RamsHouse
— East Coast Rams Pod (@EastCoastRams) August 10, 2022

Chris Garrett

The former D2 mythical pass rusher Chris Garrett had a developmental 2021 season, but he was expected to be should more involved in the Von Miller-less pass rush moving forward. His outlook is a bit uncertain after he injured his groin. Per Ramblin Fan, McVay stated the following about Garrett’s injury, “those soft tissue things can be anywhere between a couple of days to a couple of weeks”.

Garrett is listed as the back-up to Justin Hollins at this moment. I suspect that he will be in-sync at some point early in season – wether it is Week 1 or Week 3.

John Wolford

The back-up to Matthew Stafford, John Wolford, has seized quite a few reps w/ Matthew Stafford limited via his elbow injury. The former Wake Forest signal-caller is 1-0 in his lone start in the league.

What is the Rams running back outlook?

By: Jake Rajala

The Los Angeles Rams flexed their talent at quarterback (with Matthew Stafford) and wide receiver (with Cooper Kupp) in 2021, but they were missing a key ingredient at running back. Cam Akers, who recorded 625 yds in 2020, sadly tore his Achilles in the 2021 training camp. His injury caused him to miss 16 games last season. It’s safe to say that Sean McVay is thankful to have his talented running back healthy and ready to unleash havoc moving forward.

The Rams had the 25th-ranked rushing attack last season — after having the 10th-ranked rushing offense in 2020. The Rams should be able to have at least a middle-of-the-pack rushing attack next season.

Cam Akers is Superman pic.twitter.com/8N9OJVxAF2
— Jesse Moeller (@JMoeller05) January 9, 2022

Akers recently turned 23 years old and he should be a pivotal RB1 for LA for many years to come. He will be joined by Darrell Henderson Jr. — who had a modest 688 rushing yds, 4.6 YPC, and 5 rushing TDs last season. He ehad a 68.7 grade by PFF.

After the top two RBs, they have Kyren Williams and Jake Funk. Williams is a fifth-round draft pick out of Notre Dame. His best season came in his sophomore season — where he unveiled 1,125 rushing yds, 5.3 YPC, and 13 rushing TDs. He still had a superb junior season, as he notched 1,002 rushing yds, 4.9 YPC, and 14 rushing TDs. Funk is a seventh-round draft pick out of the 2021 NFL Draft. He only had five rushing yds last season, but he could have a larger role in 2022 if one of the top two RBs has an injury.

With that said, it wouldn’t be a complete surprise if the genius Sean McVay brought in another RB. He has a strong taste for acquiring offensive firepower — regardless of the current talent on offense.
