5 overrated QBs right now

By: Jake Rajala

The Fantasy Football world is nearly as breathtaking as the artificial space station in Treasure Planet. However, there is an abundance of signal-callers that haven’t lived up to the hype at this moment. With that said, I’m going to untwine five overrated QBs in fantasy. Let’s begin.

A-Rod

The Green Bay Packers two-time reigning MVP QB Aaron Rodgers has been a shell of his once self. He has failed to throw more than three touchdowns in a contest thus far. A-Rod also hasn’t ousted more than 255 passing yards in a game yet. Mr. Efficient hasn’t been MVP worthy. Fantasy Pros has placed Rodgers 11th overall (just outside the Top 10) in their QB rankings.

Kirk Cousins

A lot of fantasy owners liked Kirk Cousins’s Week 1 performance against the Green Bay Packers, but he hasn’t been a stud in any recent memory. Cousins has only thrown more than one touchdown in two of his games so far. It’s fair to say that his opponents (the Vikings and Saints) over the past two weeks haven’t been overly scary as, well.

Unfortunately, Justin Jefferson can’t also play QB.

Kirk Cousins sounds like half of fantasy managers during Redzone pic.twitter.com/xTN437lFhQ
— Fantasy Football Today (@FFToday) October 12, 2022

Kenny Pickett

There isn’t any reason to love the 2022 first-round pick, Kenny Pickett, in fantasy or dynasty right now. Pickett (who was projected to be the most pro-ready QB by countless scouts) has yet to throw an NFL touchdown. Yes, you read that correctly. He also has thrown two interceptions in the past two weeks & he currently holds a 2022 passer rating of 61.5.

Jameis Winston

It’s disappointing that Jameis Winston has reverted back to his wicked ways — after showing flashes of greatness in his seven-game stretch last season. Winston has thrown 2 touchdowns to five interceptions in his last two starts. Furthermore, Michael Thomas has also had injury issues rise up again. The cherry on top of criticisms against Winston is that the Red Rifle has outperformed him – to be fair.

Anybody else think Jameis Winston and Andy Dalton would be perfect in a buddy cop show about two Americans who are working a case in London but have zero understanding of the British culture pic.twitter.com/f3r2bfGzdI
— Bobby Football (@Rob__Paul) October 2, 2022

Joe Burrow

The AFC Champion a season ago, Joe Burrow, notched three passing touchdowns against the New York Jets in Week 3, but he hasn’t been a bully in his other four contests. The Bengals QB is also on pace to throw 17 interceptions, according to ESPN. The Bengals OL is honestly a big reason why Burrow hasn’t been an illustrious QB. Hopefully, the Bengals can resolve their miscues upfront soon.

Reflecting on Week 3 in the NFL

By: Jake Rajala

Week 3 is nearly completed and it was certainly an exhilarating batch of showdowns. With that said, I’m going to jump right into it & untwine seven things we learned so far from Week 3 in the NFL.

The Colts pick up a pivotal win against an elite opponent

I was optimistic about the Indianapolis Colts’s chances to be successful entering 2022. I felt like my heart was broken after they started 0-1-1 and set to face off against a Prometheus-like team in Kansas City in Week 3. Well, the Colts strangely upset the Patrick Mahomes show in their own stadium by a score of 20-17. Matty Ice was crisp with the football (222 passing yards, 2 TDs, 0 ints) & his defense limited Mahomes to 262 passing yds, 1 TD, and 1 INT.

MATT RYAN AND THE 6’7 JELANI WOODS CALLED GAME IN INDY pic.twitter.com/q4cIpcciIR
— Pat McAfee (@PatMcAfeeShow) September 25, 2022

There is certainly a lot of hope for the illustrious Colts team that is led by the scary RB Jonathan Taylor. The Colts sit at 1-1-1 in the AFC South — which is behind the 2-1 Jacksonville Jaguars and in front of the 1-2 Tennessee Titans & 0-2-1 Houston Texans.

Miami Dolphins look like an AFC Juggernaut

The Miami Dolphins have ascended to 3-0 — after beating the potent Baltimore Ravens squad in Week 2 & the mighty Buffalo Bills in Week 3. It should be noted that Tua Tagovailoa was nicked up, yet he fought back to help his team grab the victory.

It’s very early in the season, but it’s hard to imagine the Phins WR group slowing down and Mike McDaniel’s brain taking a slower gear. Hill wasn’t electric against the Bills, but Waddle certainly snuck through the Bills defense and ousted 102 yards.

? TUA TIME ?

Tagovailoa throws a BOMB to Jaylen Waddle on 3rd & 22 for 45 yards!pic.twitter.com/9GpEi6XpgV
— ClutchPoints (@ClutchPointsApp) September 25, 2022

The Phins defense has allowed less than 20 points in two of the last three games.

It’s really unclear if the Phins be the top seed in the AFC or have the edge over the Bills, but It looks like the Phins are a playoff team at this moment. I don’t believe that many teams want to face off against the explosive and stingy AFC East team in the post-season.

Jameis Winston struggles for the second straight week

Jameis Winston, who is the mega-arm QB in the Big Easy, has lost his spark without Sean Payton. After throwing a whopping three interceptions in Week 2, Winston unveiled two interceptions (although, one int was on the last play) against the Carolina Panthers. Winston nearly threw a few other ints against the Panthers, but his hard-balls to the Panthers DBs laps were uncatchable. Winston has battled through minor injuries, so hopefully, he can bounce back to 100%, too.

Me watching Jameis Winston play football pic.twitter.com/TL6TA7fHzh
— Jorge Mercado (@Merk_43) September 25, 2022

Lamar Jackson shines again

The man on a mission for a monster contract, Lamar Jackson, claimed victory against Bill Belichick and the Pats. LJ impressively accumulated five touchdowns against the Patriots. He also leads the NFL in passer rating, per CBS Sports. He is clearly seeking vengeance and his second MVP ring in his career.

FIVE TOUCHDOWNS FOR LAMAR JACKSON TODAY ???
Expect the Saints offense to shine in 2022

By: Jake Rajala

The New Orleans Saints offense was the opposite of firing on all cylinders a season ago. The playoff-cursed Saints squad ranked dead last in passing yards — which instantly brought grey hair to the Saints legendary head coach Sean Payton. As Payton stepped away from football (for the moment), the Saints offense will rely on the ole-familar, offensive coordinator Pete Carmichael and a healthy Jameis Winston to make life hell for opposing defenses.

King Jameis Winston talking about the human body is amazing pic.twitter.com/2qMGFvlJGP
— Jordan Dajani (@JordanDajani) September 7, 2022

As widely enunciated, Winston was blatantly a stud in seven match-ups last season, by throwing 14 touchdowns to three interceptions, and most importantly: ousting a potent 5-2 record. He’s finally healthy and playing with a WR group that transformed into shinier armor this off-season.

The NFL analyst Bart Scott has pegged Winston to win MVP in the 2022 season. It’s hard to deny his situation – where has a healthy (and underrated) Michael Thomas, a slot legend in Jarvis Landry, and an electric rookie in Chris Olave. Thomas may run an infinite amount of slant routes, but he is still unguardable in the intermediate and deep parts of the field. The Saints wiz Nick Underhill of New Orleans.Football nicely pointed out that a “healthy Michael Thomas” would be the biggest asset to the team this summer.

From @GMFB: #Saints WR Michael Thomas is “progressing” toward being on the field Sunday, while we check in on #Ravens QB Lamar Jackson on deadline day. pic.twitter.com/JmCFYSJyHc
— Ian Rapoport (@RapSheet) September 9, 2022

The Saints don’t only have a Top-5 WR trio, but they have an un-suspended Alvin Kamara in 2023, a feisty, age-less Mark Ingram, and an underrated athlete at TE named Adam Trautman. AK, who had a magical rookie season, ousted 1,337 total yards in a broken Saints offense last season. Ingram quietly had 3.8 rushing yards per carry (which was more than Kamara’s 3.7 YPC) and 260 rushing yds in seven games in 2021. It could even be said that Ingram’s explosiveness was strange at this stage in his career.

Let’s not forget about the Saints beef up front. They will also have a mostly healthy, very talented OL to kick off Week 1. Trevor Penning will be out until at least November, but they will anticipate quality play from Andrus Peat and Ryan Ramczyk. The former Stanford OL (Peat) missed 11 contests last season, while Ramcyk missed a career-high seven games.

Ryan Ramczyk was brilliant in week 1 vs. J.J. Watt, showing elite-level hand placement & variance in his strikes while mixing up his sets to keep Watt guessing & off-balance.

Also, a stud run-blocker that can create movement off the ball or work to the 3rd level pic.twitter.com/0MS85jChBE
— Brandon Thorn (@BrandonThornNFL) September 11, 2019

The Saints should return to being a Top-5 team in passing yards and a middle-of-the-pack rushing offense. They possess a highly-gifted group of players on offense and I expect Carmichael to know which buttons to press moving forward. Barring an injury to Winston or Thomas, or an unexpected blunder from the back-up LT James Hurt, the Saints offense should bring music to the ears of Who Dat Nation in 2022.

Best darkhorse MVP candidates

By: Jake Rajala

There are clearly a lot of gifted football players in the year of 2022. The spot-light undoubtedly is handed to the top quarterbacks in the NFL. The cream of the crop QBs garner expectations to win the most prestigous, individual award: MVP. Well, I’m going to roll out the red carpet for a few under-the-radar QB faces and even non-QB players. Without further ado, here are my 10 best darkhorse MVP candidates in the 2022 season.

Matt Ryan

The 2016 MVP, Matt Ryan, is back in a situation where he is surrounded by sexy offensive pieces. Ryan will enjoy utilizing Jonathan Taylor (1,811 rushing yards and 18 rushing touchdowns in 2021), Michael Pittman Jr (1,082 receiving yards in 2021), and Alec Pierce (Colts second-round pick in 2022) – who is seen as an OROY favorite by countless NFL heads. I also absolutely love Matty Ice’s 30th ranked schedule in 2022.

Jameis Winston

Bart Scott isn’t in the wrong for believing that Jameis Winston can win MVP in 2022. Jaboo has a hungry & healthy Michael Thomas, a legendary slot WR in Jarvis Landry, & a talented rookie WR (Chris Olave) that has dazzled this off-season. Furthermore, he’s on a Saints team that has constantly mopped the floor against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

Justin Jefferson

The Minnesota Vikings nicely unveiled a sophmore season (108 receptions, 1,616 receiving yards, and 10 touchdowns) that was more potent than his rookie season (88 catches, 1,400 receiving yds, and 7 TDs). Jefferson is in a shiny new offensive scheme with Kevin O’Connell and he clearly will have plenty of creative assignments. He shouldn’t just set his sights on being the next wideout to win OPOY, as he should aspire to win MVP.

Most receiving yards through two seasons in NFL history:

1.

Kirk Cousins

I may be cheating with slotting two Minnesota Vikings back to back. Nonetheless, I really believe Kirk Cousins is due for a career season – after throwing 33 touchdowns to 7 interceptions last season. Captain Kirk has had a 100+ passer rating in each of his prior three seasons. Furthermore, he’s made the Pro Bowl in two of his past three campaigns.

Dak Prescott

The warrior Dak Prescott unveiled a career-best 37 passing touchdowns to 10 interceptions last season. Prescott also had a 68.8 completion percentage (personal-best). Despite Amari Cooper leaving town, I expect Prescott to improve from last season with an ascending Ceedee Lamb & a healthy Michael Gallup. Even if Prescott sits on a potentially overpopular squad, I still believe he’s an underrated MVP candidate.

Mac Jones

The sophmore QB from Alabama, Mac Jones, ousted 3,801 passing yards, 22 passing touchdowns (to 13 interceptions) a season ago. He was gifted a trip to the Pro Bowl after his succesful 2021 outing. Of course, he shined on and off the field at the PB. I forsee Jones taking a signifcant step forward in year two with Devante Parker. If he can edge out the Buffalo Bills once (or twice), he can certainly improve his MVP chances.

How many days until kickoff?@MacJones_10 | #ForeverNE pic.twitter.com/YfYs9Zuoar
— New England Patriots (@Patriots) September 1, 2022

Trevor Lawrence

I honestly love the direction with the Jacksonville Jaguars offense. The Jags offense has gifted Trevor Lawrence a healthy Travis Etienne, the explosive Christian Kirk, and the match-up nightmare in Evan Engram. Lawrence had a rough rookie season, but he has more firewpoer and a much wiser head coach than a season ago.

Micah Parsons

Micah Parsons is simply a freak of nature. I believe he will soon be regarded as the best defender to come out of the draft since Aaron Donald. Parsons had an unbeliveable DROY season (13 sacks, 30 QB hits, 20 TFLs, and 3 FFs). He was given first-team All-Pro honors for his rookie efforts, as well. I believed Parsons can be DPOY in 2022, while he very recently made it clear that he believes he can be MVP in the upcoming season. I certainly won’t disagree with him after his take.

Cowboys LB Micah Parsons: “Last year, I was trying to find myself.

Tua Tagovailoa

The young Dolphins signal-caller Tua Tagovailoa is likely head over heels with his potent supporting cast. He has the fastest WR tandem (Jaylen Waddle and Tyreek Hill) in the league. He also has his own young, offensive wiz head coach in Mike McDaniel. Perhaps Tagovailoa can have a lot of victories & make an infinite amount of splash plays.

J.C. Jackson

There have only been two defensive players to win MVP and it may not be a surprsie to state that neither of those profiles were a cornerback. J.C. Jackson may just be the first CB to win MVP! He had 9 ints in 2020 and 8 ints last season. He will certainly have a plethora of more opportunities to dominate in a Chargers defense that features Khalil Mack and Joey Bosa. There will also be A LOT of desperate opposing teams that try to keep pace with Justin Herbert – which could spell that oppposing QBs will be pressured into more mistakes.

Who is the most overrated quarterback?

By: Jake Rajala

The NFL has profoundly magical quarterbacks in Tom Brady, Aaron Rodgers, Patrick Mahomes, Russell Wilson, Josh Allen, Justin Herbert, Joe Burrow, Lamar Jackson, Matthew Stafford, Dak Prescott, and Matt Ryan. After the first wave of gifted quarterbacks, there is an abundance of quarterbacks that have made flashes of greatness but are still regarded as overrated in my opinion. With that stated, I’m going to untwine five overrated quarterbacks entering 2022.

Ryan Tannehill

The Tennessee Titans signal-caller, Ryan Tannehill, looked worse than the 2020 version of Mitchell Trubisky last season. Tanny only unveiled 21 passing touchdowns (to 14 interceptions) & completely sunk in the playoff contest against the Cincinnati Bengals. The Titans QB threw one touchdown, three interceptions, and finished with a QBR of 66.7. I believe the Titans made a mistake hanging onto Tannehill this off-season, especially after shipping away A.J. Brown and witnessing Derrick Henry age a bit more. I foresee Malik Willis having the keys to the offense by the mid-point of the season.

Malik Willis with a very nice throw for a touchdown to Chig Okonkwo in the back of the end zone in red zone.
— Teresa Walker ? (@TeresaMWalker) August 18, 2022

Baker Mayfield

I believe the Carolina Panthers made too desperate of a choice to bring in Baker Mayfield this off-season. Mayfield hasn’t made a single Pro Bowl in his career. He’s also thrown 13+ interceptions in three of his four seasons. I don’t believe the outlook is pretty for Matt Rhule and Mayfield in the loaded NFC South. I have an itch that CAR will bring in a new, offensive-minded HC and a QB early in the 2023 draft next off-season.

Zach Wilson

The New York Jets quarterback receives a ton of hope and buzz (mostly for his infamous hand gesture and touchdown), but he honestly had a dreadful rookie campaign: nine passing touchdowns, 11 interceptions, and 2,334 passing yards. It was a complete surprise to me that the Jets only brought in Joe Flacco to pair with the former BYU signal-caller this off-season. Wilson must have a 2022 season similar to the 2021 version of Mac Jones (at least) with the Jets weapons (Elijah Moore, Corey Davis, and Garrett Wilson).

Zach Wilson is already back with the Jets: pic.twitter.com/oVyLAO7Izu
— Jets Videos (@snyjets) August 18, 2022

Jameis Winston

I am jumping from the bandwagon on Jameis Winston being an underrated QB to him being an overrated QB. He undoubtedly was an efficient QB in his seven-game stint last season. However, it is yet to be seen if he can be consistent and clutch over a 17-game span in the upcoming season. Furthermore, he doesn’t have Sean Payton in his corner moving forward. Let’s not forget that he will certainly miss LT Terron Armstead – as the rookie Trevor Penning has already displayed growing pains as a pass-blocker. Winston should continue to be better than his days in Tampa Bay, but can he bring the Saints back to the post-season?

Jalen Hurts

The Philadelphia Eagles QB Jalen Hurts has garnered a lot of praise and very favorable projections. Nonetheless, it’s vital to remember that he didn’t exactly blow defenses out of the building in 2021 (3,144 passing yds, 16 passing TDs, 9 interceptions). With DeVonta Smith AND A.J. Brown, he needs to crack his first Pro Bowl nod and bring his team back to the NFC playoffs.

Mike McDaniel should target Brees in 2022

By: Jake Rajala

The mythical quarterback Drew Brees retired in the 2021 off-season, but the former Saints legend recently stated that he may play football in 2022. There are undoubtedly lots of NFL folks that believe Brees’s thought of throwing the pigskin next season is a pipe dream. Nonetheless, Brees may be able to override his 43-year-old weaknesses with his on-field awareness and unmatchable amount of passion.

I believe that Brees could un-retire and chase a Super Bowl ring if he can join an elite roster with talented offensive pieces. I honestly believe that the loaded Saints team would rather ride with the big-arm, wise Jameis Winston than the Big Easy hero in Brees. Winston was 5-2 without his current WR trio (Michael Thomas, Jarvis Landry, and Chris Olave) last season and Winston can really utilize the ability of Chris Olave (and Deonte Harris) deep down the field.

Jameis Winston just connected deep to Deonte Harris and that's five touchdown passes for Jameis in his first game as #Saints starter.pic.twitter.com/gCkV441YiT
— Billy Heyen (@BillyHeyen) September 12, 2021

If the Saints don’t bite on the HOF-caliber QB, I would love the shiny and utterly talented Dolphins roster to acquire Brees for his last ride in 2022. The Phins have been rumored to be interested in Tom Brady and It would make sense for Mike McDaniel to be interested in a different greek god QB in Brees. The Dolphins have Brees’s former LT Terron Armstead and new weaponry: Tyreek Hill, Chase Edmonds, and Sony Michel.

Terron Armstead (LT #72) is a master at using his outside hand.

He baits pass rushers into throwing out their move and then is able to quickly flip it and reset his hands to shut them down. pic.twitter.com/TAXsU2dYEV
— mike (@bengals_sans) February 15, 2022

It may seem obvious that Brees doesn’t have the sexiest arm strength, but he could still be the better version of Tua Tagovailoa. Tua is well-known for not possessing mean arm strength and he hasn’t been an impressive game manager (10 interceptions last season).

The Saints Super Bowl XLIV champion could unveil a training camp performance that’s similar to his 2020 season (excluding his playoff fiasco), or he could prove to be a washed-up QB in September. If Brees’s fountain of youth is completely missing, he could still be an excellent mentor for Tagovailoa. The former Alabama QB was often compared to Brees in the draft process and he could really sharpen his physical and mental abilities by being in the same QB room as Brees. Sean McVay pulled a few tricks out of his sleeve in 2021 and it may be time for the young, Dolphins HC to keep his foot on the pedal and ink Brees in the near future.

By: Jake Rajala

The New Orleans royalty Jarvis Landry agrees to a one-year contract with the New Orleans Saints today. The 29-year-old wide receiver will join fellow Saints weapons Michael Thomas, Chris Olave, and Alvin Kamara. It’s clear that Jameis Winston is licking his chops with the new firepower in his offense.

Deshaun Watson might have picked the Cleveland Browns over the Saints, but Landry’s heart clearly chose to make magic happen in the Caesars Superdome next season. The former Brown made each Pro Bowl from 2015 to 2019. The former LSU WR ran a slow 4.77 40-yard dash at his NFL combine, but he didn’t fail to become a star WR in the NFL.

Landry has been a pillar of consistency in his career, but he did his worst season of productivity in 2021. He missed a career-high five games last season, while his QB Baker Mayfield fell off a cliff. So, it’s reasonable that Landry wasn’t a stud in a Browns offense that also witnessed OBJ perform at a mediocre level.

Landry is still a very good football player and I expect him to be in a superb situation with the Saints long-time OC Pete Carmichael and big-arm QB in Winston. Landry has often been the NFL’s top slot WR and he can shine in the slot for NO, while Thomas and Olave can be stars from out-wide. It will be quite difficult for opponents to prepare for the speed of Olave while giving Thomas and Landry tough matchup-ups.

The Saints ranked 32nd in passing last season and I would be shocked if they weren’t a Top 10 passing offense next season. They will likely sling the rock without Alvin Kamara in his six-game absence and they are really able to throw the ball in the short game and deep down the field. I believe the 2021 Bengals passing offense is a potential realistic comparison for the 2022 Saints passing offense. The Bengals had three WRs with 800+ receiving yards, while Joe Burrow was fifth in passing yards and eighth in passing touchdowns. It can be hard to believe mystic growth, but Winston’s 2021 production combined with his new weapons could lead him to become a stat (hopefully, not a turnover) machine in 2022.

Latest outlook of Chris Godwin

By: Jake Rajala

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers wide receiver Chris Godwin was geared up for a career season until he tore his ACL in Week 15 against the New Orleans Saints. Godwin ousted 98 receptions (127 targets), 1,103 yards, and five touchdowns in 14 games last season. His presence was clearly missed in the playoffs, as the Brady bunch were defeated by the Los Angeles Rams in the NFC Divisional contest.

Mike Evans says Bucs “scratched and clawed” back from 24 points down, just couldn’t close out the comeback vs. Rams. pic.twitter.com/sQqHEBWjMD
— Greg Auman (@gregauman) January 23, 2022

The Bucs are obviously confident Godwin bouncing back to a superb playmaker for their Brady-led offense, as they re-signed him to a three-year – $60 million dollar deal. Godwin is only 26 years old and he should be a prolific WR for many more seasons.

Godwin has been often been a Top 8 WR in PPR with or without Tom Brady. Although, Godwin should feel happy that TB12 is unretired and that should help him return to being a slot machine. The complete absence of Antonio Brown and Robert Gronkowski should help Godwin have a career season in receptions/targets in 2022, in my opinion.

Tom Brady throws the touchdown to Chris Godwin.

Bucs looking good early on ?

(via @NFLBrasilpic.twitter.com/G2zQ5GL56y
— Bleacher Report (@BleacherReport) September 10, 2021

However, I’m not a huge fan of Godwin’s ability to climb the ladder beyond a likely terrific season in 2022. I expect Brady to hang up his cleats after next season, so the WR should be awarded a much less impressive QB in the post-Brady era.

The biggest difference in Godwin’s potential degression lies in the fact that the Buccaneers offensive scheme could change. I don’t like the chances of Byron Leftwich staying in Tampa Bay in the near future. He nearly left for Jacksonville this offseason and I would be shocked if he doesn’t walk on a red carpet to a new team after Brady retires. Leftwich/Bruce Arians were a big reason why the Bucs throw it around the yard with Brady or Jameis Winston. Godwin is a special route runner and consistent play-maker, but I really expect his production to noticeably dip “without Brady and the heavy passing offensive design”. It’s time to sell the potential 2022 stat machine to many fantasy owners that are surely licking their chops for his Buccaneers magic.

Jameis Winston is underrated entering 2022

By: Jake Rajala

The New Orleans Saints quarterback Jameis Winston proved to be one of the league’s most indispensable players in 2021. The former first overall pick started 5-2 for Who Dat Nation last season and then suffered a brutal season-ending injury against his ex-squad on Halloween. After the Saints captain went down, the ship sadly went down last season. The Saints finished in heartbreaking fashion with a 4-7 record after Winston’s ACL injury

During this QB shuffle, Jameis Winston is the forgotten man.

In his last full year as a starter, he led the league in passing yards and was 2nd in TD’s.

Prior to his injury last year, career-high TD rate and career-low INT rate.

What are we doing NFL?pic.twitter.com/aU2VWDYJxM
— Dave Kluge (@DaveKluge) March 20, 2022

Winston’s 5-2 record as a Saint could arguably be underrated for a couple of reasons. In the Panthers victory against the Saints in Week 2, the Saints were missing a whopping seven coaches. It was obvious that the Saints were missing their coaches/communication after the Panthers ran the same blitz three times in a row during the contest.

.@Saints @Panthers and the Panthers run the EXACT same blitz 3 plays in a row. The Saints never picked it up and got beat by it 3X in a row. Something you never see in the #NFL. #BaldysBreakdowns pic.twitter.com/YGkvT5mO7d
— Brian Baldinger (@BaldyNFL) September 23, 2021

Outside of the Saints embarrassing short-handed loss against the Panthers, the Saints lost a tough matchup against the NY Giants in overtime. It’s clear that “a win is a win”, but the Giants barely escaped with a victory against the Michael Thomas-less Saints in the “stone age of over-time rules”.

It should be well-enunciated that Winston wasn’t only a proven winner and an occasional play-maker with a dreadful supporting cast last season, but he will definitely have reinforcements in 2022. The return of Michael Thomas can’t be understated. A slightly injured MT managed to be efficient with Taysom Hill in a three out of four-game span (excluding the Broncos QB-less fiasco):

vs the Falcons: 9 receptions for 104 yds

vs the Falcons: 9 receptions for 105 yds

vs the Eagles: 8 receptions for 84 yds

The talented and hungry Thomas should be at least a quality WR next season. The combination of Thomas being a bit unpopular and the arrival of Chris Olave shouldn’t dismiss that the 2019 OPOY could still be a Top 10 WR in the familiar Pete Carmichael offense.

Just a quick reminder of the truth when confronted with the meme below. https://t.co/jbwdn1FjCe pic.twitter.com/ytkx6a1MB0
— Ross Jackson (@RossJacksonNOLA) May 4, 2022

Winston and the rest of the die-hard fans in the Big Easy are happy to have Thomas back, but he will truly have a special WR2 in Chris Olave. The other former OSU WR has the perfect combination of speed (4.39) and route-running ability. He can be perfect for Winston’s arm strength on play-action and he can be effective with screens from the slot. He has often been compared to former Saints WR Brandin Cooks, so that should bring excitement to Saints fans.

The humble and gifted Saints QB will be ready to dazzle the weak NFC South pass defenses and the rest of his opponents with Thomas, Olave, Alvin Kamara, and Deonte Harris. Expect the QB in the shadow of even the AFC QBs not named Patrick Mahomes (for ex: Josh Allen, Joe Burrow, Justin Herbert) and fellow-NFC South QB Tom Brady to have a Pro Bowl-caliber season and surprise a large portion of the NFL world in 2022.

What should you do with Alvin Kamara in your dynasty leagues?

By: Justin Frye

Five years and five RB1 seasons is an overly impressive way to start a career. Alvin Kamara has been absolutely elite for his managers. He comes into 2022 with a few more questions this year. Jameis Winston returning is great news after showing a rapport early last season. Age, off-the-field questions, and a coaching change lead to even more ambiguity in Kamara’s overall value. Let’s dive into what to do with Alvin Kamara.

Notable running backs who will be over the age of 26 for the 2022 season:

– Alvin Kamara
– Leonard Fournette
– Ezekiel Elliott
– Austin Ekeler
– Dalvin Cook
– James Conner
– Nick Chubb
– Aaron Jones
– Derrick Henry
— Dave Kluge (@DaveKluge) April 22, 2022

Will Alvin Kamara miss time in 2022?

I’d be remiss if I didn’t start off the article with the fact that Kamara and some friends allegedly beat a man the night before the Pro Bowl in Las Vegas earlier this year. I’m not a lawyer, so see the tweet from Drew Davenport below on the whole situation.

I’m officially kicking things off over on TikTok! – @ fantasyfootballlawyer

My first video is up and it’s an UPDATE on the Alvin Kamara case. Check out part of the video here and head to TikTok for the rest! Please give it a like and a Follow! ????? pic.twitter.com/tzgqVi2co2
— Drew Davenport (@DrewDavenportFF) April 22, 2022

Drew mentions the 25th of April in his video, which unfortunately came and went without any action except to delay this hearing until August. As Drew said, any video leak will be terrible news for Kamara’s playing potential in 2022. The NFL likely learned from what happened with Kareem Hunt and that video leaking, so I expect a much harsher penalty to avoid going back to fix their mistake later. Bottom line, unless someone offers you fair value, I think holding is the smartest move until he sees the field again, but also can understand getting whatever you can and getting rid of him.

Hearing in Alvin Kamara case moved to August. https://t.co/MeTWHtHKDt
— ProFootballTalk (@ProFootballTalk) April 25, 2022

What does 2021 mean for Kamara’s future?

When on the field, Kamara has been an elite RB for the Saints team. He’s been relatively durable throughout his career and has been top twelve in fantasy points on a per-game basis every season of his career. The return of Mark Ingram didn’t hurt Kamara in the stat sheet, as he only got some extra rest. The bigger concern is the return of Michael Thomas and the high draft pick they’re likely about to add.

Fantasy Points per Game Started
+ Greatest RBs of All-Time

1. Javonte Williams (29.8)
2. Christian McCaffrey (23.6)
3. Priest Holmes (22.8)
4. Alvin Kamara (22.6)
5. LaDainian Tomlinson (21.3)
6. Marshall Faulk (21.3)
7. Jonathan Taylor (20.4)
8. Arian Foster (20.3)
— Scott Barrett (@ScottBarrettDFB) December 6, 2021

2021 saw Alvin Kamara lead his team in targets on a per-game basis. That was helped out by the overall lack of receiving talent on the outside, as Michael Thomas was unable to return from ankle surgery and none of the secondary targets stepped up to help the rotation of QBs the Saints trotted out. With both, Thomas and Winston expected to be ready for week one and the Saints owning multiple first-round picks in a deep WR draft, I’d expect Kamara to see less usage in 2022.

Other changes in the big easy

The Saints coaching staff on offense has a good deal of continuity, with the exception of the top dog. Sean Payton stepped down, and OC Pete Carmichael will be taking on play-calling duties. While the continuity is likely good for the team as a whole, Carmichael obviously doesn’t have the in-game experience calling plays Payton did, making this a bit of a wild card and likely step down for the offense.

The other “change” to highlight is just normal aging. As Dave Kluge tweeted in my top link, no RB at age 26 or higher has been top 5 since 2016. RBs are getting used up young and phased out. Kamara is the archetype to buck that trend, but it’s still a risk. Like Shady McCoy, he’s a smaller, shiftier back who isn’t a between the tackle grinder and does significant work in the passing game. If you asked me to bet on RBs off that list, those types are who I’d take (Aaron Jones and Austin Ekeler pop out to me too).

Conclusion

In summary, I do still think Kamara has multiple solid years left in him. Backs who are prolific in the pass game age better and more gracefully than bell-cow grinders do. I’m holding him right now no matter what, unless I get the RB1 type return for him. As a contender, definitely worth keeping, and hope any missed time happens before the fantasy playoffs. If I’m rebuilding, I’ll hold until more clarity is gained and any suspension might be served, as his value is bound to be higher when he’s back putting up top ten numbers on a per-game basis.
