What a wild week 3 in the NFL. The block party in the 1 O’clock window was just crazy to watch. It just goes to show how important special teams is in the modern game. As for fantasy, there were some surprise showings including Caleb Williams best day as a pro. There were also more injuries of note that are worth noting. Let’s take a look at those below.

James Conner (vs. SEA) – Conner suffered a gruesome ankle injury in the loss to the 49ers. He is now out for the year which means it’s Trey Benson‘s time in Arizona. Benson is worth spending a good amount of FAAB on especially if you’re in need of a running back.

Terry McLaurin (@ ATL) – McLaurin finally had a breakout game but it came at a cost. He picked up a quad injury that may keep him out this week when the Commanders face the Falcons. The injury didn’t look serious at the time but it’s worth monitoring as his status is in doubt.

Najee Harris (@ NYG) – Yet another running back fell victim to a season ending Achilles injury, this time it’s Harris. Najee shared the workload with rookie Omarion Hampton but now it will be the Hampton show in LA.

Our weekly fantasy football start ’em, sit ’em series features your best bets at the skill positions and players you should avoid. We also include our start of the week for the player who is guaranteed to produce that week. Below is our week 11 edition and as per usual I picked these players based on the Half-PPR scoring system. Be sure to check out our fantasy football section for fantasy football advice and much more!

Quarterbacks

Start ‘Em

Jared Goff (vs. Chi) – Jared Goff’s numbers haven’t been gaudy this season but he has been consistent at the quarterback position. Goff ranks 12th in total fantasy points for quarterbacks which includes his BYE week. He had an impressive showing in the week 10 win vs. the Chargers where he had 333 yards and 2 touchdowns. Up next Goff will face the Bears at home and this is setup for Goff to have his best performance of the season. I can see Goff throwing for 3 touchdowns in this one as the Lions cruise.

Sit ‘Em

Baker Mayfield (@ SF) – Mayfield has been solid for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers this year. It is somewhat surprising as many including myself, thought he would be benched by this point of the season. With that said you will need to sit Mayfield this week as he is set to face the 49ers on the road. San Francisco bounced back last week in a 34-3 throttling at Jacksonville. More importantly, the defense looked like its old self constantly pressuring Trevor Lawrence. Mayfield will be under that same pressure all game long and the Bucs offense is in for a rough afternoon.

Running Backs

Start ‘Em

Ty Chandler (@ Den) – Chandler was a priority on the waiver wire this week for a reason. Fellow running back Alexander Mattison is likely to miss this matchup which paves the way for Chandler. He will get to face the Broncos defense which is allowing the most fantasy points to opposing running backs this season. Fire up Chandler this week as he is in line for a big game.

Sit ‘Em

Joe Mixon (@ Bal) – Mixon and the Bengals are set to face an angry Ravens team on Thursday night. The Ravens had a surprising collapse against the Browns last week and will be looking to bounce back vs. their division rival. The last time they met Mixon was held in check vs. this Ravens defense. I expect more of the same tonight for Mixon and the Bengals ground game.

Wide Receivers

Start ‘Em

DeVonta Smith (@ KC) – The Super Bowl rematch is the game of the week and it should be another high-scoring affair. Kansas City will no doubt prioritize locking down A.J. Brown which will give more opportunities for Smith in the passing game. Keep in mind the Eagles also likely be without tight end Dallas Goedert who is dealing with a forearm injury. This means more of a target share for Smith who has a touchdown in back-to-back games.

Sit ‘Em

Amari Cooper (vs. Pit) – Amari Cooper is in for a frustrating game vs. the Steelers. Cooper has had a nice season thus far and is in the top 12 in receiving yards with 715. Unfortunately for him and the Browns offense, Deshaun Watson is set to miss the rest of the season with a shoulder injury. The loss of Watson will no doubt hurt the Browns passing attack as they will rely more than ever on their stellar defense.

Tight Ends

Start ‘Em

Cole Kmet (@ Det) – Cole Kmet owners will be happy to see starting quarterback Justin Fields back in action for the Bears this week. Backup quarterback Tyson Bagent filled in admirably for Chicago but this offense is more dynamic with Fields at the helm. Kmet should find success in the passing game as the Bears are likely to be playing from behind on the road vs. the Lions.

Sit ‘Em

Tyler Conklin (@ Buf) – Conklin had his best game of the season last week in the loss vs. the Raiders. He had 70 yards on 7 receptions including a 27-yard catch and run. Don’t expect that to continue this week when the Jets head to Buffalo. Conklin was held to just 2 yards on 1 reception when these teams met in week 1. The Bills are in desperate need of a win and they will get it this week.

Start of the Week

James Conner (@ Hou) – Conner had no issues taking on the full-time role for the Cardinals last week. In his return from the IR, Conner had 73 rushing yards on 16 carries. Conner certainly looked like his old self and I expect even better numbers this week vs. the Texans. This one has the makings of a shootout and you could see last week the impact of Kyler Murray returning had for the Cardinals. Lock in Conner this week as a must-start as he is set for a big day.

Below you will find our newly released fantasy football rankings for week 10. This week we have another four teams on BYE (Chiefs, Eagles, Rams and Dolphins). That is quite a bit of offensive firepower that will need to be benched this week so make sure to plan ahead. There are also some key players that are eligible to come off IR this week. More on those players and other injuries below.

James Conner – Conner has been officially designated to return from IR by the Arizona Cardinals. Head coach Jonathan Gannon recently stated that Conner is looking “excellent” in his rehab which is a great sign. If he indeed suits up this week he will get a bump in our rankings.

Justin Jefferson – Jefferson is also eligible to come off IR this week but the lack of updates is concerning. He is dealing with a hamstring injury that caused him to miss the last four games. We should know more about Jefferson’s status later today.

Justin Fields – Fields is dealing with a thumb injury but may return this week for Thursday Night Football. Fields has logged limited practices for the Bears leading up to the game. We will know his official game status later today.

Week 6 is a pivotal point in the fantasy football season. If your team is struggling you’re not out of it yet but you will need to start stacking some wins. Unfortunately, week 5 featured some high-profile injuries that will shape the rest of the season. James Conner and Justin Jefferson were put on IR and will be out for at least the next four games. De’Von Achane has a knee injury and he may also end up on the IR. Below let’s highlight some other injuries that will impact the week 6 NFL slate.

Roschon Johnson – Johnson left the game against the Washington Commanders with a concussion. His status for week 6 is still uncertain but don’t be surprised if he sits. The Bears also lost Khalil Herbert to an ankle injury leaving D’Onta Foreman as the only healthy back.

Javonte Williams – Williams missed the week 5 matchup with a quad injury but it looks like he will return Thursday night against the Kansas City Chiefs. Williams practiced in full on Tuesday which is a great sign going forward.

Travis Kelce – Kelce picked up an ankle injury in the week 5 win at Minnesota. He was able to practice on Tuesday but it was in limited fashion. With a quick turnaround and a Thursday night game, Kelce’s status is certainly up in the air.

Nailing the mid-rounds of a fantasy football draft is just as important as hitting on the early rounds. There are plenty of starters to be found in these rounds that offer big upside. This is especially important for fantasy players that like to draft wide receivers early and wait until these rounds for a running back. Below we have identified three mid-round RBs that you should target for your team. Let’s break down each player further and highlight why you should be looking at drafting them.

The current ADP below is for Half PPR scoring.

Jamaal Williams (Saints-RB) | ADP-109 | RB-38

Jamaal Williams was one of the biggest fantasy surprises last season with the Detroit Lions. Williams came out of nowhere and led the league in rushing touchdowns (17) along with 1,000+ rushing yards. He has since landed with the New Orleans Saints and it may be a perfect scenario for him.

Alvin Kamara is dealing with a legal situation that could cause him to miss time next season due to suspension. If that happens Williams should carry a majority of the load and that’s enticing for fantasy players. The Saints also drafted Kendre Miller during the 2023 NFL Draft but expect the rookie to be eased in slowly. At this current ADP picking up Williams is a no-brainer and a must-target in the mid-rounds.

James Conner (Cardinals-RB) | ADP-74 | RB-26

It’s a bit surprising that James Conner is not higher in the current ADP. Conner will be the focal point of the offense early on for the Arizona Cardinals as they wait for Kyler Murray to return. Expect a heavy workload for Conner who showed last year that when healthy he can be a top-10 back. Health is really the only concern going forward for Conner. If he can play in all 17 games next season I expect Connor to finish the RB15 territory.

Javonte Williams (Broncos-RB) | ADP-81 | RB-29

Javonte Williams is coming back from a serious ACL injury that cut his 2022 campaign short. Early indications are that Williams is recovering well from his injury and should be ready to go when the season starts. I am a big believer in Williams in the Sean Payton system as the RB could be in for a breakout year. He has all the makings of an elite running back with his speed and ability to break tackles. In 2021 Williams led the league in broken plus missed tackles forced at 17.2%. This was almost 3% higher than Rhamondre Stevenson who came in second place. If Williams is indeed fully healthy and ready for week 1 this will end up being a steal.

It’s very much looking like the Arizona Cardinals are in for a rough 2023-2024 season. As of now, we don’t know when Kyler Murray will return from an ACL injury. Consequently, we will be seeing Colt McCoy under center for the 1st half of the season and maybe more. The Cardinals also released star wide receiver DeAndre Hopkins this offseason. This wasn’t a huge surprise but Arizona is now lacking true playmakers on offense. Is there hope for the Cardinals going forward? Let’s break down their roster and predict their record for the 2023-2024 season.

The Good

James Conner has found new life in the desert. The former Pittsburgh Steeler signed a one-year deal in 2021 with the Cardinals and it was a gamble on his part. There were questions on whether he could carry the full load and be the lead running back. The gamble paid off as Conner showed he is more than capable of being a three-down back in this system. He will now be relied on more than ever with Kyler Murray out for the foreseeable future. Expect the Cardinals to feed him early and often, especially in the beginning of the season.

Embed from Getty Images

The Cardinals offensive line desperately needed help and they turned to the 2023 NFL Draft to solidify it. Arizona drafted LG Paris Johnson Jr. from Ohio State and he will be a day-one starter. Johnson Jr. is an athletic, versatile lineman that could eventually be a Pro Bowl caliber player. It starts in the trenches and although the Cardinals o-line has a ways to go they should be improved in 2023.

The Bad

Offense wins championships. This is the reality of the NFL in 2023. Sure you can have a stout defense and be successful but if you want to reach the pinnacle you have to have an elite offense. This is why it was a bit of a head-scratcher when the Cardinals decided to hire Jonathan Gannon as their head coach. Don’t get me wrong, Gannon is an excellent young coach who helped take the Eagles defense to the next level but is this the right fit? There were plenty of young offensive minds available for the Cardinals to hire but they decided to go with Gannon. If you look at the most successful teams in the league today most have offensive minded head coaches.

As we stated before the Cardinals have a roster that is devoid of playmakers. Marquise Brown is a solid wide receiver but can he really be a #1? Zach Ertz has always been a reliable pass catcher but health has been a factor for him in recent years. Outside of James Conner, the Cardinals don’t really have a player you have to game plan for.

The Prediction

As expected this will be a tough season for Arizona Cardinals fans. When you look at their 2023 NFL schedule it’s hard to find wins in there. I do see wins at home against the Atlanta Falcons and the Los Angeles Rams along with a road victory at the Houston Texans. The Cardinals will once again be picking at the top of the draft in 2024.

2023 Record: 3-14

By: Emerson Beery

Fantasy football managers have always had a love, hate relationship with their running backs. On one hand, they can absolutely be the most important part of your championship team, but on the other hand, it is the most volatile and injury-prone position available.

Fantasy owners are in a constant scramble to fill in for bye weeks, and injuries which can be the difference in making the playoffs or not in your league. In this article, I will highlight sleepers, outside of the consensus top 30 running backs drafted, who could provide upside going into the 2022 campaign. These are great running backs to draft to back up your top-tier starters, or if you’re taking a zero RB approach and looking for some later-round players with upside.

A #Jaguars fan got to the corner of the endzone and started jumping up and down calling for the ball.

He was open, but Jaguars opted to give the ball to James Robinson for the TD. pic.twitter.com/RCthWku2Jd
— Ari Meirov (@MySportsUpdate) December 19, 2021

James Robinson

James Robinson has been one of the more amazing stories in the NFL and fantasy over the last couple of seasons. He went from UDFA to fantasy stud in 2020. He accounted for over 1400 all-purpose yards, and 10 touchdowns on his way to an RB7 finish. After creating high expectations, his 2021 season did not go as expected, however. Robinson was a part of the Urban Meyer disaster, was inexplicably benched multiple times throughout the year, and ultimately tore his Achilles in Week 16 versus the New York Jets.

This was not what fantasy managers foresaw after Travis Etienne went out for the season with a Lisfranc injury over the Summer. After a dip in value as a result of Etienne being drafted, James Robinson vaulted back up fantasy managers rankings after the injury news.

Ultimately, after a hot start to the season, however, and four straight RB1 finishes from Weeks 3-6, Robinson struggled with consistency. This was due to minor injuries, and landing in Urban Meyer’s doghouse midway through the year. His snap percentage only reached over 65% one time week eight onward. He eventually landed on IR with his torn Achilles. Why am I buying at his current dynasty value? I’m willing to throw away the whole last year for the Jaguars as Urban Meyer was one of the worst coaches in NFL history. Each report highlighted a coach that was completely out of his depth and one that was toxic to the locker room. Every Jaguars player deserves a pass for last year, as they couldn’t have been put in a worse position to succeed.

The Urban Meyer era in Jacksonville was called "the most toxic environment I've ever been a part of" by an anonymous player#PMSLive pic.twitter.com/NVbTwTvxg2
— Pat McAfee (@PatMcAfeeShow) March 21, 2022

James Robinson’s ADP is also low because of the risk his Achilles tear poses to his 2022 season and the assumption that Etienne will be the lead back. Cam Akers, George Pickens, and other athletes have amazed us with their quick return to the field in recent years. I believe this is becoming more the norm than an anomaly, and I Expect to see James Robinson on the field early in the 2022 season. When he does return, he will still at worst be a heavily involved second RB like Kareem Hunt. We have yet to see Etienne in NFL action though, and there is still a path toward becoming a starter again for the Jaguars. His ADP as a mid-tier RB3 according to most sites is very cheap for a running back of his caliber.

James Conner

It’s hard to be called a sleeper when you just had a top 5 fantasy season for a running back. However, Conner is just that in dynasty leagues with an ADP ranging between RB30-39 according to most sites. I expect this to rise as most of the ADP data has not been updated since his re-signed with the Cardinals. Still, his dynasty value will be hampered by his age (26), and his injury history. Thus creating a buy point for managers despite his breakout season with the Cardinals. Conner was the featured RedZone back throughout the year, amassing 18 total touchdowns. He also showed his receiving ability averaging 4.8 receptions for 53.8 yards in weeks that Chase Edmonds missed due to injury. With Edmonds no longer in the picture, Conner figures to be the bell cow of a high-powered Arizona offense.

James Conner takes it in for 6. pic.twitter.com/q61xRcejlu
— Arizona Cardinals (@AZCardinals) January 18, 2022

When drafting RBs early I look at attributes like age, injury history, and overall talent. Running backs that hit on all these marks are taken ate a premium, and rightfully so as so few meet this criterion. Where Conner is being drafted every running back has significant flaws due to one thing or another. Conner is slightly older and has missed 14 games over the last four seasons due to injury. All these concerns are baked into his cost though as a middling RB3. If I’m a competing dynasty team in 2022, I’m exploring buying Conner at his current cost, particularly from young rebuilding teams that view him as a declining asset. His price is only likely to go up over the Summer so buy now if you have the opportunity.

Chris Carson

Chris Carson has been amazing since taking over the lead Running Back duties for the Seahawks back in 2018. He has compiled three straight top 20 finishes for a back. Additionally, he has averaged over 4.4 yards per carry each of the last 4 years and is still just 27 years old. Carson’s inability to stay on the field however has led to a major dip in his dynasty ranking. Carson finds himself ranked as an RB4 according to most experts, ranked behind the likes of Kahlil Herbert, Chuba Hubbard, and fellow teammate Rashad Penny. Chris Carson’s fantasy ranking suggests that people believe he is going to retire, or that he is the clear #2 back to Rashad Penny. I don’t believe either to be the case and expect Carson to be a large part of this offense.

CHRIS CARSON BEASTQUAKE ?pic.twitter.com/c1Q0NmKo1N
— PFF (@PFF) October 12, 2020

First, off-season reports suggest that Carson is rehabbing nicely and that he should be back for Summer workouts. This is great news as many feared a serious neck injury was going to put his career in jeopardy. Addressing the second concern, I believe that the fantasy community is coming under a little recency bias due to Penny’s late-season fantasy surge. He was the RB1 over the course of the final five weeks of the season and was the reason many fantasy owners won their championship. Penny scored nearly half of his career fantasy points in the final five weeks of the season. This is mainly due to the fact that Penny has missed 26 games in the last three seasons. Even when healthy, Penny has operated as the clear second back behind Carson. Penny is often injured and has been inconsistent his first four seasons in the NFL. This will provide Carson plenty of opportunities to overtake Penny in Seattle’s backfield. At RB44, Carson is basically free and is far too cheap for a potential starting Running back.

Who is the top free agent RB target for the Buccaneers?

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers have two soon-to-be free agent running backs in Leonard Fournette and Ronald Jones. They both will most likely not return to Tampa, but I expect the Bucs to prioritize bringing back Jones. Per Sports Illustrated, the Bucs all-purpose Rojo appears to be the RB that the Bucs are more likely to bring back, as well.

If the Bucs lose Playoff Lenny, I expect Arians to be aggressive for a modest RB2. They may not have the GOAT Tom Brady, but they want to retool and not rebuild in Tampa Bay. So, who could the Bucs target at RB in the 2022 free agency? Well, here are a few potential fits.

Alex Collins

The Seattle Seahawks RB Alex Collins is a nice, downhill RB that plays with a similar style of running as Fournette. Collins registered a modest 411 yards in 2021 and he was the lead rusher for Seattle down the stretch last season. Collins quietly knocked out 973 yards in 2017 as a Baltimore Raven. I believe the 27-year-old would be a nice value pickup and complement to “Rojo” for the next few seasons.

Establish Alex Collins ? pic.twitter.com/U2ZXJJ0zGl
— PFF Fantasy Football (@PFF_Fantasy) October 18, 2021

James Conner

The Bucs might be looking to strike the gold and pick up the impressive RB James Conner. Conner unleashed 15 rushing touchdowns last season! The former Steelers RB might be intrigued by the possibility of playing in an offense that features Mike Evans and potentially Chris Godwin. Bruce Arians may want to ink a big RB to help the young Kyle Trask in 2022.

We witnessed former Bucs signal-caller Jameis Winston throw the most interceptions in the league, so the Bucs will need to make sure they have a non-Brady plan at QB. Arians may want to improve the running game to help ease the load off the second-year Trask (assuming he starts).

Latavius Murray

The 2021 Baltimore Ravens RB Latavius Murray still has some gas left in his legs. Murray unveiled 501 rushing yards last season while splitting reps with Devonta Freeman and Lamar Jackson. The 32-year-old Murray, who is very familiar with the Bucs (former Saints RB), would be a smart RB to sign if Conner or a younger RB isn’t available. I expect the Ravens to lean on the younger, healthy Gus Edwards and J.K. Dobbins in 2022. The Ravens ought to use resources to ink a free agent WR not named Sammy Watkins to take the field with their All-Pro TE Mark Andrews, as well.

Draft Cardinals RB James Conner!

By: Brady Akins

Did people forget that James Conner is a good running back? Serious question.

Because as I look around the fantasy football landscape, looking at Conner’s overall RB36 projection on FantasyPros’ consensus rankings, I can’t help but feel as though maybe people did forget.

So let me remind you, James Conner is a good running back– and it wasn’t so long ago that he was a coveted fantasy football asset. Just three seasons ago, back in 2018, Conner finished as the overall RB6 in PPR leagues, ahead of other coveted players at the position like David Johnson, Melvin Gordon and Kareem Hunt.

But time passes, and the tide of public opinion shifts. Now with the Arizona Cardinals, Conner as seen as little more than an afterthought in fantasy football. Someone that broke too many hearts and destroyed too many leagues after being taken by many as a first-round player in 2019 to ever be trusted again.

Even after a bounceback 2020 season that saw Conner produce on a solid yet unspectacular level, the fantasy football managers of the world have collectively given Conner the cold shoulder, not trusting that a new team can bring him back to his 2018 ways.

But Conner’s 2020 season should give you hope that he can produce highly once again, especially with the change in scenery.

TOUCHDOWN @JamesConner_! pic.twitter.com/wDZZKodPX6
— Pittsburgh Steelers (@steelers) December 27, 2020

Conner and The Cardinals

People tend to think about the Pittsburgh Steelers, Conner’s former team, as a rough and tough throwback– the epitome of hard-nosed football with an emphasis on the trenches.

But here’s the thing. The Steelers, without question, were anything but that in 2020.

Pittsburgh presented an offensive line last season that struggled throughout the year– primarily in the run-blocking department, ranking 24th overall in ESPN’s run blocking win rate metric. It was difficult for the Steelers to get anything going on the ground at all with defenders barrelling down on the running backs the second the ball is snapped– which is a big part of why the Steelers finished dead last in total rushing yards and yards per attempt last season, as well as bottom five in carries.

You might think those numbers would reflect poorly on Conner, but actually, the former Pittsburgh Panther was one of the lone bright spots in the Steelers running game. Between Conner, Benny Snell, and Anthony McFarland, the Steelers had three different players with over 30 carries in 2020. And Ben Rothlisberger, who ran the ball 25 times for a ”˜Lamar Jackson-esque’ 11 yards.

Not super important, but I do find that funny.

All in all, Pittsburgh bottomed out with 3.6 yards per carry, but most of the negativity can be attributed to the Steelers’ ”˜other guys’ as not a single player with over 10 carries, with the exception of Conner, averaged more than 3.4 yards per carry, weighing down the average.

Conner, meanwhile, finished the year with 4.3 yards per carry, 721 yards, six touchdowns, on only 169 attempts. Not jaw-dropping numbers, mind you, but remember what the other running backs on the Pittsburgh roster were able to manage with a porous offensive line.

Also keep in mind that Conner’s production was not limited to just the ground game, either. The former Steeler has managed at least 34 catches in each of his past three seasons, with 35 last year for 215 yards. A down year in the receiving game relative to his 2018 standard, when Conner finished the year with 55 catches for nearly 500 yards.

That’s the thing with Conner. In a bottom-tier situation like the Steelers’ running game was in for 2020, the running back won’t wow anyone. But in good circumstances, with the right pieces around him, he can excel– just like he did in 2018.

Which is why his landing spot for 2021 should excite you.

Kenyan Drake in Miami this year
?? Season-long rush of 11
?? 0 touchdowns

Kenyan Drake’s first Cardinals drive
?? 36-yard run
?? Touchdown

(Via @NFL)pic.twitter.com/1XYHoBGeAv
— Bleacher Report (@BleacherReport) November 1, 2019

Kenyan Drake, the Cardinals’ former starting running back, has left the building– leaving the door open for Conner to push for the starting job. If he gets it, he’ll be the top guy for an offense that ranked sixth last year in total carries, relative to the 28th run heaviest offense he played in with the Steelers.

Granted, many of those carries belong to quarterback Kyler Murray, and those aren’t going anywhere. But if Arizona relies on Conner the same way they did with Kenyan Drake, Conner will be receiving a career-high in carries, going from a career peak of 215 to the 239 Drake got in 2020.

Arizona wasn’t super fond of running backs sharing the wealth in 2020, either with Drake’s backup Chase Edmonds receiving less than half the carries the former Cardinals’ starter got. In comparison, while Conner led the Steelers in carries last season with 169, the backup Snell was right on his heels with 111.

Conner could very well become a three-down back with the Cardinals, receiving the volume he deserves in an offense that could get him back to his 2018 peak. To get prime James Conner back would mean getting a strong runner and an above-average pass catcher who could finish as an RB1.

While the path back to fantasy football stardom might be a long one that won’t pay dividends for a few years, expect Conner to at least surprise some folks in 2021 with mid-tier RB2 potential.

Arizona will win the NFC West in 2021

By: Gladys Louise Tyler

The 8-8 Arizona Cardinals were in the playoff hunt for part of the 2020 season. This is true even though head coach Kliff Kingsbury was 3-9 against the NFC West, including a 0-4 record against Sean McVay’s Los Angeles Rams.

The Cardinals started 2-0 in the West, only to end on a four-game losing streak in the division.

They were 5-2 before ending the season on a 3-6 bender.

There were a few reasons for the losing streak:

Wide receiver Christian Kirk looked the part of the number two wide receiver until the final eight games. In the last eight, he managed a paltry 22 receptions, 234 yards, and zero touchdowns.

Quarterback Kyler Murray got injured in Week 11 against the Seattle Seahawks. After that, the offense scores 30 plus points only once the rest of the season.

Linebacker Chandler Jones incurred a bicep injury in Week 5. He ended his season with 11 total tackles and one sack. Without Jones, the Cardinals’ defense gave up close to 28 points a game on the road.

There is also the possibility that Kingsbury’s offensive prowess is over-rated, but that could be an overstatement as the offense worked for the first half of the season.

But this year the Cardinals will not only reverse their fortunes within their division, but win the NFC West outright.

At first glance, it seems like an improbable statement. The NFC West is the most competitive division in the NFL. But it is possible, and here is why:

QUARTERBACK KYLER MURRAY

Murray showed improvement until his Week 11 injury. He finished the season with a completion percentage that was 2.8% better than the previous year. He threw for six more touchdowns and had 40 more rushing attempts. The rushing attempts elevated his rushing touchdowns by seven compared to last year.

WIDE RECEIVER DEANDRE HOPKINS

There is no doubt the addition of Hopkins boosted the offense. Hopkins finished the season with a career-high 71.9% catch rate. He was targeted 160 times and had six touchdowns.

This being his second year with Murray should make the pairing that much more formidable and the duo should put up huge numbers in 2021.

ADDITION BY SUBTRACTION

This might be the most important reason the Cardinals are set to win the division this year. Their free agency acquisitions are more of a “win-now” mentality than let’s rebuild for the future.

Although they lost both Patrick Peterson and Kenyan Drake in free agency, they gained players (who, if they remain healthy) will help them win now.

Running back James Conner

Wide receiver AJ Green

Defensive end JJ Watt

Cornerback Malcolm Butler

Kicker Matt Prater

And yes, the NFC West did make some splash acquisitions. The Los Angeles Rams acquired quarterback Matthew Stafford for the win-now mentality. The San Francisco 49ers obtained Trey Lance for the future, and well, the Seattle Seahawks attempted to upgrade their defense, with cornerbacks Ahkello Witherspoon and Pierre Desire and defensive end Aldon Smith.

THE SCHEDULE

Depending on your “go-to” source, the Cardinals either have the fourth most difficult schedule or the 13th. If you go by the Cbssports.com strength of schedule, the Los Angeles Rams and the Seattle Seahawks will face a harder schedule than the Cardinals.

CARDINALS 2021 SCHEDULE

WEEK 1 @ TENNESSEE TITANS

WEEK 2 v MINNESOTA VIKINGS

WEEK 3 @ JACKSONVILLE JAGUARS

WEEK 4 @ LOS ANGELES RAMS

WEEK 5 v SAN FRANCISCO NINERS

WEEK 6 @ CLEVELAND BROWNS

WEEK 7 v HOUSTON TEXANS

WEEK 8 v GREEN BAY PACKERS

WEEK 9 @ SAN FRANCISCO NINERS

WEEK 10 v CAROLINA PANTHERS

WEEK 11 @ SEATTLE SEAHAWKS

WEEK 12—NOV 28 BYE WEEK

WEEK 13 @ CHICAGO BEARS

WEEK 14 v LOS ANGELES RAMS

WEEK 15 @ DETROIT LIONS

WEEK 16 v INDIANAPOLIS COLTS

WEEK 17 @ DALLAS COWBOYS

WEEK 18 v SEATTLE SEAHAWKS

WINNING THE NFC WEST

This is Kingsbury show me year. His team has to improve against the West foes, including the zero wins against the Rams. The Niners will have the slew of players that were injured back; the question remains it Trey Lance or Jimmy Garoppolo under center this season. The Seahawks are, well, the Seahawks, doing little to appease quarterback Russell Wilson’s concerns; they remain who we thought they were until proven otherwise.

The path through the NFC West appears to go through California. If the Cardinals can break even with their NFC West rivals, there is no reason they cannot overtake the NFC West championship belt (and if there isn’t one, there should be).
