Cordarrelle Patterson is a unique profile

By: Andy Davies

When Arthur Smith was hired as head coach of the Atlanta Falcons, he came into the role with a great reputation for improving players after a two-season spell as the offensive coordinator for the Tennessee Titans.

One player he helped improve was quarterback Ryan Tannehill. The former first-round pick arrived after a mixed spell with the Miami Dolphins. Tannehill improved massively, earning the award for Comeback Player of the Year after his first season with the franchise despite starting the season as the backup to Marcus Mariota. When Smith was promoted to offensive coordinator, he only got better.

Smith was predicted by many to help Matt Ryan get back to his former MVP self after what he did for Tannehill. Ryan has not improved or regressed in 2021. Instead, it has been Cordarrelle Patterson that has been the biggest improver under Smith.

Here is why Patterson is Smith’s new Tannehill.

Cordarrelle Patterson is now up to 10 total touchdowns scored this season, setting a career-high for the most he's had in his career.

At 1-year, $3M, he's been arguably the best value signing in free agency for any NFL team this season.
— Field Yates (@FieldYates) December 12, 2021

Overcoming Expectation

The Falcons experimented with the idea of bringing Todd Gurley back to his best in 2020 but this only lasted one season. Instead of giving Gurley a new deal, they went for the versatile Patterson in Free Agency who signed a one-year $3 million deal.

Patterson has been seen as somewhat of a journeyman during his NFL career, with the Falcons his fifth organisation since being drafted 29th overall in 2013. For a while, he was seen as a great return specialist at best, with the occasional snaps as a running back or wide receiver.

He is a Super Bowl champion, earning a ring with the New England Patriots after their 13-3 win over the Los Angeles Rams in Super Bowl 53. However, he had just two rushing attempts for 7 yards and two receptions for 14 yards as well as a 38-yard kick return. He did not exactly have a big role in the game, in what is the lowest scoring Super Bowl in history.

Patterson has started eight games this season. This is tied for the most games he has started, alongside his 2016 campaign with the Minnesota Vikings. The growth of Patterson and improvement made under Smith can be seen when you compare these two seasons.

In 2016, he recorded 43 rushing yards from 7 attempts and 453 yards from 52 receptions. In 2021, he has so far recorded 489 rushing yards from 106 carries and 518 receiving yards from 44 catches. He is having the best season of his career by some distance.

The Falcons need to make sure he is at the franchise for more than one season. Giving him a new contract should be number one on the list of priorities for this team. He has been a brilliant addition to the Falcons offense. Kyle Pitts leads the team in receiving yards this season (770), but Calvin Ridley announced midseason that he would take a break from the sport for personal reasons. With the offseason departure of Julio Jones, Patterson’s rise in form has come at the perfect time. They currently sit at 6-7 with a chance of making the playoffs for the first time since the 2017 campaign.

Smith’s Influence

The aforementioned Tannehill spoke about Smith during the 2021 offseason.

“He’s a great coach. Everything you look for in a coach and a leader and a great offensive mind.”

It is not just Tannehill that saw massive improvement under Smith. Running back Derrick Henry was seen as just a good running back during his first three seasons but saw his best two seasons alongside Smith. He recorded 2,293 rushing yards across his first three seasons in the NFL. His next two (2019 and 2020) saw him combine for 3,567 rushing yards and 33 rushing touchdowns, becoming just the eighth player in NFL history to record over 2,000 rushing yards in a single season when he had 2,027 in 2019.

Smith clearly knows how to work with running backs, as can be seen with Henry. The same is happening again with Patterson. After their 21-14 win over the Jacksonville Jaguars in November, Smith was in high praise of Patterson.

“He’s a warrior. He’s a big physical presence that can do a lot for us.”

This was proved when he was listed as a back safety earlier this month. It is a sign of a good coach when they can get the best out of a player and see their potential. Not even the greatest head coach of all time in Bill Belichick realised Patterson’s potential. Smith has taken a player seemingly on the wrong end of his career, to now being one of the best players this season. Some are even viewing him as an outside MVP candidate.

Patterson has a lot to thank Smith for.

The End of An Era in Atlanta?

Since he entered the NFL in 2011, Julio Jones has established himself as one of the best wide receivers in the entire league. A generational talent for the Falcons, Jones has produced seven 1,000 yard plus receiving seasons. Jones has two seasons where he has led the entire league in receiving yards, in 2018 and 2015. Jones was a star shortly after he entered the league, earning two consecutive 1st team All-Pro honors in 2015-2016.

Jones was a huge part of the Falcons Super Bowl run in 2016. Leading the team in receiving yards and touchdowns. Jones had 83 receptions for 1,409 yards and six receiving touchdowns in 2016. He was a huge part of the Falcons’ success passing the ball, including insane catches like this one.

This catch by Julio Jones in Super Bowl LI was absolutely insane ??pic.twitter.com/cJqbLAQiQH
— FOX Sports: NFL (@NFLonFOX) March 29, 2020

Flash forward to the 2020 NFL season, it was a disappointing year for Falcons fans. The Falcons finished 4-12 this season, fired Dan Quinn, and now own the 4th pick in the NFL draft. The Falcons tried to make a final run, signing Todd Gurley in free agency and trading for Hayden Hurst before the season. But unfortunately, the offense consisting of Julio Jones, Matt Ryan, Todd Gurley, Hayden Hurst, and Calvin Ridley did not work out.

2020 was a rough season for Jones, dealing with a hamstring injury, he only saw action in nine games. Jones still has two years left on his contract, but at 31 years old, maybe the Falcons’ new regime would want to get something back for Jones before his career is over.

With Calvin Ridley’s emergence as a star wide receiver in the league, the Falcons might want to get rid of Jones and build around the younger players. The team should be able to garner a second-round pick for him. He is 32, injury concerns, with a massive contract, but he’s arguably the top WR in the game when healthy. And It’s not fair to compare it to Hopkins getting traded for a grain of salt (off-field concerns?). Where will the future NFL Hall of Famer end up? Here are 3 potential landing spots for Julio Jones.

Baltimore Ravens

The Baltimore Ravens have already established themselves as a top contender. The Ravens are considered to be a top-four team in the AFC and could be looking to get some more help for Lamar Jackson this off-season.

The Ravens have shown they have a great defense and great running game, but they lack playmakers in the passing game. Jones would fit in perfectly and complement Marquise Brown’s skill set for the Ravens. Adding a former top receiver in the league in Julio Jones, the Ravens offense could take that next step in 2021.

I believe the Ravens would be a good fit for Jones for multiple reasons. Adding Jones to the Ravens’ offense would make them Super Bowl favorites. Even at 31 years old, when healthy, Jones is still a top receiver in the NFL. Jones would slide in and immediately become the Ravens’ number one receiver. The Ravens need another receiver to take the pressure off of Marquise Brown. Jackson needs another receiver he can rely on, and Jones can be that for him.

"JULIO JONES! Unbelievable!" pic.twitter.com/yKHpwyY6Zd
— Atlanta Falcons (@AtlantaFalcons) May 24, 2020

The Ravens also have enough cap space to fit Jones in, currently around $28.5 million. They won’t have to make any cuts, restructures, or trades. They are also in the window where they have their quarterback Lamar Jackson for cheap. Win-now moves need to be in store for the Ravens, and acquiring Jones would do that.

An offense consisting of Julio Jones, Mark Andrews, J.K. Dobbins, Lamar Jackson, and Marquise Brown would threaten the opposing teams’ defenses. It’s also very possible that they cut ties with Mark Ingram to create more money. If the Ravens want to make that next jump to a Super Bowl contender in 2021, This is a move I think they should make.

Miami Dolphins

While they may not be contenders just yet, the Dolphins are trending in the right direction for 2021. The Dolphins have built an elite defense, who led the entire league this season in takeaways with 29.

The Dolphins will need to get playmakers around Tua Tagovailoa this off-season, as he struggled at the end of the year with the Dolphins’ limited playmakers. Tua needs more weapons at receiver besides Devante Parker and Jakeem Grant.

That’s where Julio Jones comes into play. The Dolphins currently have a projected $32.3 million in cap space next season, which will allow them to acquire Jones’ services.

They also have the draft capital to offer the Falcons. They currently have “nine total draft picks” in the 2021 draft, including two first-round picks thanks to the Texans.

Passing Ranks of Miami Dolphins (Pro Football Reference):

Passing Yards: 20th

Passing Touchdowns: 22nd

Yards P/A: 29th

Jones would immediately step in as the Dolphins’ top pass-catcher, and he would provide Tua with a new option in the passing game. The Dolphins were one game away from making the playoffs last season, and a move for a superstar receiver like Jones most likely gets them over that hump. Let’s not forget how dominant Jones was a couple of seasons ago.

Julio Jones is a grown ass man ??
https://t.co/s739xEKe7E
— Athlete Tweets ?? (@AthleteTweetts) January 6, 2021

Washington Football Team

Washington has shown they are trending in the right direction for the future. After winning the NFC East in Ron Rivera’s first season as head coach, Washington lost to the Buccaneers 31-23 in the NFC Wild Card Round.

Washington put up a great effort against the Bucs, as they were short-handed with starting quarterback Alex Smith being inactive. In the game it was clear, Washington needs another playmaker on their offense.

Bringing in another playmaker at wide receiver is what Washington needs to do this off-season. They have the money to spend this off-season, with around $56 million to play with. They have enough money to bring in Jones but will need to figure out their quarterback situation. Adding a star-like Julio Jones to the mix will help whoever is under center.

Passing Ranks by Washington (Pro Football Reference):

Passing Yards: 25th

PPG: 25th

Net Yards Per Drive: 31st

Passing Touchdowns: 28th

Below is the regular season production of the WRs behind Terry McLaurin:

Cam Sims: 32-477-1

Steven Sims Jr. : 27-265-1

Trading for Jones would immediately give Washington one of the best wide receiver duos in the league. Washington already has a great young defense, adding to their offense this off-season will only help the team in 2021. Adding Julio Jones to Terry McLaurin, Logan Thomas, and Antonio Gibson would give Washington a great chance of being the division leader once again in 2021.
