Latest Waiver Wire targets in Week 2

By: Jake Rajala

Week 1 is nearly in the books and it surely didn’t disappoint. There were a few games that were more entertaining than the first season of Squid Game. Furthermore, there were a ton of under-the-radar players that dazzled and deserved to grab the attention of fantasy owners. With that said, I’m going to untwine several waiver wire targets in Week 2.

Holy smokes. Baker Mayfield launches a Hail Mary and Donovan Peoples-Jones comes down with it! pic.twitter.com/EucELAu2lq
— Ari Meirov (@MySportsUpdate) October 17, 2021

Donovan Peoples-Jones

The Cleveland Browns wideout Donovan Peoples-Jones may not have the same resume as Amari Cooper, but he still led the Browns in targets, receptions, and receiving yards yesterday. He is only rostered in 4% of the Yahoo leagues. DPJ should continue to garner excellent match-ups as the WR2 and I expect him to really blossom with Deshaun Watson late in the season.

Marcus Mariota

I honestly loved Marcus Mariota’s performance in Week 1. The former Heisman winner didn’t come out with a victory against the New Orleans Saints, but he did have 215 passing yards, a potent 72 rushing yards, and a touchdown (and a fumble). It’s also worth noting that Mariota performed well against a likely Top-3 defense in New Orleans.

Welcome to ATL Marcus Mariota. pic.twitter.com/QuRn5SHc2v
— Atlanta Falcons (@AtlantaFalcons) September 11, 2022

Julio Jones

It was noted that Julio Jones was the fastest player on the Buccaneers this off-season. Jones didn’t exactly appear to be washed up in Week 1. The Falcons legend connected with Tom Brady on a 48-yard pass & finished with three catches for 69 yards. Jones is rostered in 62% of Yahoo leagues.

Jameis Winston

The third NFC South player on this list, Jameis Winston, started to really cook in the fourth quarter of the Saints-Falcons game. Winston unleashed 13 completions on 16 attempts, 213 passing yards, 2 passing TDs, and 0 interceptions. It’s also refreshing to see Michael Thomas back and healthy for his QB (2 TDs in Week 1).

Saints record w/ Jameis Winston as QB1:

6-2 pic.twitter.com/In56mIf9IN
— CBS Sports (@CBSSports) September 11, 2022

Jeff Wilson

The illustrious 49ers RB Elijah Mitchell could miss numerous contests after his hurting his knee in Week 1. The 49ers RB2 is none other than Jeff Wilson. His most productive campaign was in 2020 (600 rushing yards, 7 rushing TDs, and 4.8 YPC). He is currently rostered in 16% of Yahoo leagues.

Rex Burkhead

Rex Burkhead was certainly involved all-around for the Houston Texans on Sunday. He had 40 rushing yards and five catches from Davis Mills. The 32-year-old RB refuses to decay. He is only rostered in 13% of Yahoo leagues and 17% of ESPN leagues.

Cleveland Browns defense

Myles Garrett was an absolute menace against his former QB Baker Mayfield on Sunday. He sacked Mayfield twice (and almost a third time). The best part is that the hungry Browns team faces a Joe Flacco-led Jets team in Week 2.

Will Julio Jones be cast into Canton?

By: Brock Wells

Julio Jones has been one of the NFL’s best wide receivers for a decade, as he looks to rebound from a disappointing 2021 campaign this season in Tampa Bay. His ten seasons in Atlanta included a couple of the best individual seasons by a wide receiver in NFL history. This includes the 2015 season in which he finished the regular season with 1,871 receiving yards, breaking down to a remarkable 116.9 receiving yards per game.

To answer a question like whether Jones belongs in the Pro Football Hall of Fame, it’s helpful to look at who in the Hall of Fame has similar credentials. 50 years before Jones’s 2015 season, Hall-of-Fame wide receiver Lance Alworth hauled in 1,602 receiving yards in the 1965 regular season, breaking down to 114.4 receiving yards per game. Of course, there are a few contextual points worth mentioning here.

Alworth’s ’65 season took place in the American Football League (AFL), with fewer teams in competition than the current NFL.

It was a 14-game season, as opposed to the 16-game NFL season of ’15.

Alworth had six more receiving touchdowns and 9.4 more receiving yards per reception than Jones.

Some Julio Jones highlights

Career stats (ranks in Falcons history)
• 848 rec (1st)
• 12896 yds (1st)
• 60 TD (2nd)

Most rec yds single season in Falcons history
1.'15 Jones (1871)
2.'18 Jones (1677)
3.'14 Jones (1593)
4.'17 Jones (1444)
5.'16 Jones (1409)
6.'19 Jones (1394) pic.twitter.com/nnRy1jDEFM
— Four Verts ? (@FourVerticals_) May 25, 2021

Lance Alworth #Chargers pic.twitter.com/LGdrOdWfSU
— Old Time Football ? (@Ol_TimeFootball) December 17, 2021

Expanding further, here’s what we know about how Jones and Alworth compare over their best-known career stints.

For context, Jones’s Atlanta career was ten seasons; Alworth’s San Diego career was nine.

In 135 games played between 2011 and 2020, Jones had 12,896 receiving yards and 60 receiving touchdowns, breaking down to an average of 1,289.6 receiving yards per season and six receiving touchdowns per season.

In 110 games played between 1962 and 1970, Alworth had 9,584 receiving yards and 81 receiving touchdowns, breaking down to an average of 1,064.9 receiving yards per season and nine receiving touchdowns per season.

Jones averaged 15.2 receiving yards per reception; Alworth averaged 19.4.

Other points worth remembering are that Alworth had an additional two rushing touchdowns in his San Diego career, bringing his overall touchdown count to 83. He also had six fewer fumbles in this period than Jones had in Atlanta. They match one another in the following sense: Alworth was a seven-time AFL All-Star selection; Jones, to this point, is a seven-time Pro Bowl selection.

In terms of the postseason, while Alworth has both an AFL Championship (’63 with San Diego) and a Super Bowl win (’71 with Dallas) on his resumé, Jones has outperformed him on an individual level. In just two more postseason games, he has twice as many receiving touchdowns and 604 more receiving yards. His longest reception is also 73 yards, eclipsing Alworth’s best of 48 yards.

The eras of professional football that these two great wide receivers represent have obvious differences. But not so much as to avoid all useful analysis. Considering all of this, it seems highly likely that Julio Jones is enshrined in the Hall of Fame one day.

Who is the best target for the Packers?

By: Jake Rajala

The Green Bay Packers need to have a strong playoff tour at all costs next season. With that said, I’m going to outline three dream targets available that would help the Packers and burning man Aaron Rodgers moving forward.

No one can turn nothing into something like Aaron Rodgers…pic.twitter.com/bWBgil5Gop
— Eli Berkovits (@BookOfEli_NFL) June 2, 2022

Deebo Samuel

Let’s be honest – Deebo Samuel is being held hostage in San Francisco/Alcatraz. I believe that Deebo Samuel will give his best foot forward, but I still expect him to lobby for a new, talented team. Samuel hasn’t discovered a new contract with a 49ers team that still carries Jimmy G. After the Eagles and Cardinals reeled in shiny toys, I’d love to see the Packers be aggressive and scoop up the gifted athlete.

.@19problemz has the most rush TDs (7) by a WR in a single season in NFL History.

There's still 3 games left ?

?: #SFvsTEN — 8pm ET on @nflnetwork
?: NFL App pic.twitter.com/LUf3S1tfwS
— NFL (@NFL) December 23, 2021

Julio Jones

If the Packers can’t acquire Samuel or a young, talented WR via trade, the Packers should target a legend in free agency. The veteran WR Julio Jones may not drop 300+ yards in another game, but he can absolutely be a 1,000+ yard for A-Rod. Jones could have an excellent role in GB while having the opportunity to push for a Super Bowl ring. Maurice Moton of B/R believes that Jones is an ideal fit for the Pack at this point in time. Perhaps Jones and Rodgers can aspire to ride off in the sunset in the near future together.

Remember this unreal @juliojones_11 game from 2016?
?? 300 receiving yards (career-high)
?? 12 catches
?? 75-yard TD

?: #ATLvsCAR — TONIGHT 8pm ET on NFLN/FOX/PRIME VIDEO????
?: https://t.co/W5bCPYgMfo pic.twitter.com/Da4SOln9Ht
— NFL (@NFL) October 29, 2020

Joe Haden

If the Packers stick with their guns at WR and feel more desperate to target a defensive player, they should write love notes to Joe Haden. The former Steeler would be a nice addition to a CB unit that didn’t bring back Kevin King this off-season. He has also expressed that he doesn’t want to retire soon. If Haden wants to stay in the North and chase a Lombardi trophy, he should head to Wisconsin.

Julio Jones

The potential Hall of Famer Julio Jones still has some gas left in the tank, but it’s unclear where he will play next. I expect Julio to target a team with an MVP-caliber QB and space for him to be very involved. It would ideal for the Packers to be near the top of his wish list. Maurice Moton of Bleacher Report also suggests that Julio is a romantic fit for the Packers at this stage in his career.

Emmanuel Sanders

I believe Emmanuel Sanders would be a really good pick-up for GB. Sanders played with Drew Brees and Josh Allen, so it may be time for him to play with another very superb QB. Sanders would also be a less expensive option than the likes of Julio and OBJ. Christian Watson could learn a thing or two from the savvy veteran in Sanders.

Emmanuel Sanders is worth every single penny the Bills end up paying him and more pic.twitter.com/09vZzy2whI
— Kyle Nap (@KyleNaps) October 7, 2021

Cole Beasley

The second former Bills WR on this list would also be a sexy fit for the Pack. Cole Beasley made second-team All-Pro in 2020 and he could aspire to re-create magic with the mythical A-Rod. Beasley would be an upgrade over Randall Cobb and he would an excellent veteran presence, too. Sanders and Beasley would flat out be smart options for the Packers.

Who is the top free agent target for the Vikings?

By: Jake Rajala

The Minnesota Vikings finished with a disappointing 8-9 record in the 2021 season. In the Mike Zimmer-less era, the Vikings hope to reach the playoffs next season. The Vikings new head coach Kevin O’Connell and new GM Kwesi Adofo-Mensah added more ammunition this off-season and it’s clear the shiny Vikings should hold their heads high heading into the 2022 season.

The NFL really just let the Minnesota #Vikings get Andrew Booth Jr. in the second round. pic.twitter.com/cqjbbzAzNj
— JV (@JVSwaps) May 10, 2022

With that enunciated, I still believe it’s possible that the Vikings add horses from the FA pool. I will untwine three free agents that would be superb fits for Captain Kirk and the Vikings new direction.

Xavier Rhodes

The Vikings had the 28th ranked pass defense last season and it’s clear that the Vikings needed to improve their CB spot this off-season. They nicely brought back Patrick Peterson and then Andrew Booth slipped into their hands in round two. I still believe Xavier Rhodes would be a nice, physical CB and he may start at CB2 over the shaky Cameron Dantzler. If the Vikings can transform from a porous pass defense to a Top 12 pass defense, they could have a similar outcome in the regular season as the 2021 Dallas Cowboys.

Phillip Lindsay

The Miami Dolphins weren’t scared to ink RB Sony Michel and I’d like to see the Vikings become creative by inking the underrated Phillip Lindsay right now. Lindsay and Dalvin Cook could truly be like thunder and lightning. The UDFA legend would be the perfect replacement for Cook if the Vikings RB1 continues to have injury issues.

Julio Jones

There are a lot of NFL teams that have excellent WR trios and it may be wise for the Vikings to supply Cousins with as much explosion as possible. Julio has to be thrilled about the combination of one on one matchups and roster talent in Minnesota. The NFC has the LA Rams, TB Buccaneers, Aaron Rodgers, and the Dallas Cowboys, so the Vikings will need to score a lot of points in their potential 2022 NFL playoff gauntlet.

The San Francisco 49ers are handing the keys of the offense to Trey Lance, but they are far from a rebuilding stage. The 49ers have added Charvarius Ward and George Odum, but they haven’t hit the jackpot in free agency yet. I still expect them to have a strong chance of inking a top-tier player.

With that enunciated, here are a few profiles that the 49ers could sign:

P.J. Williams

The former Saints S/CB P.J. Williams would be an exciting addition for the 49ers. The 49ers GM John Lynch needs to be drooling over the versatility and aggressive nature that Williams displays. Williams is also coming off a career season (3 ints, 2 sacks, 4 QB hits). The two highlights of his 2021 season were having a pick-6 against Tom Brady in Week 8 and laying a clean, vicious hit on Chris Godwin that ended his season in Week 18.

Julio Jones

The 49ers are the perfect darkhorse to land Julio Jones in my opinion. Kyle Shanahan and Julio could reunite in the Bay Area. Shanny could have Deebo Samuel, George Kittle, and Brandon Aiyuk. The Rams added the superb Allen Robinson and it would only be fair if SF added Jones to their arsenal. If Jones wants to join a genius offensive mind and push for his first Lombardi trophy, he should head to San Francisco.

The Rams didn’t really need edge rusher Von Miller in 2021, but they believed his talent was important enough to help them take the next step. Lynch could make a creative and bold decision to snag Clowney (9 sacks in 2021) at this late stage in free agency and pair him with Nick Bosa. After all, Dee Ford’s tenure in SF appears to be nearly finished.

Matt Ryan can lead the Colts to an AFC South title

By: Jake Rajala

The Tennessee Titans won the AFC South and managed to snatch the number one seed in the AFC last season. I believe the Indianapolis Colts could have a 2022 outcome that is similar to the Titans 2021 expedition. Jonathan Taylor is entering his prime, while Derrick Henry appeared slightly worse and beaten up in the back end of 2021.

Just a reminder, #Colts new QB: Matt Ryan has receiving weapons behind him as well: @JayT23. pic.twitter.com/FxfZhxmaEK
— Lawrence Owen (@Colts_Law) March 26, 2022

Taylor will be joined by the stud veteran Matt Ryan moving forward, as well. It’s clear that Ryan is the best QB in the AFC South. Here is a closer look at how productive Ryan Tannehill was last season:

2021: 3,734 passing yards, 21 passing touchdowns, 14 interceptions

Tanny will also not have Julio Jones, who has officially broken up with Ryan and Tannehill. It’s hard to foresee him being a stat machine in 2022.

With that said, here is an overview of Ryan’s success last season:

2021: 3,968 yards, 20 passing touchdowns, 12 interceptions

Ryan was slightly more efficient than Tannehill last season, but I believe Ryan was still significantly more impressive than Tanny in 2021. Pro Football Focus stated that the Titans had a Tier 2 offense heading into the 2021 season, while the Falcons were a Tier 3 offense with Calvin Ridley. It’s obvious that Ryan was fighting with a Tier 4 or Tier 5 offense after Ridley missed a whopping 12 games last season.

This empty alignment vs Saints coverage would have me wishing for a T.O. if I were a Saints DC and magically had more than 3 TOs Cordarrelle Patterson for a field-flipper on third down #Falcons pic.twitter.com/pwn7SBAncq
— Matt Waldman (@MattWaldman) November 7, 2021

Ryan’s presence will be pivotal in head-to-head matchups against the Titans. The Titans edged out the Colts in both matchups last season. The Colts couldn’t manage to beat the Titans in a game that was fought in overtime. I would be shocked if the Colts don’t split games with the Titans at the very least next season.

The Titans also won six games by 3 or fewer points in 2021. Meanwhile, the Colts lost four games in overtime or by 3 or fewer points. I expect the Colts to win more utterly competitive games under Matty Ice next season, while the Titans should be less attractive in close matchups next season. It would be ideal if the Colts are expected to win 11+ games next season, while the Titans are unveiled as a 9+ win squad in 2022.

Julio Jones might be a tad out of his prime, but I don’t believe he is completely washed up or the same caliber of WR that WR Andre Johnson was late in his career. Here is how productive Julio has been in recent memory:

434 receving yards in 10 games last season

771 receiving yards in 9 games in 2020

It’s clear that Jones’s 2021 tells a different tale from his 2020 campaign, but It should be noted that the Titans displayed the 23rd ranked passing offense in 2021. Meanwhile, Julio was on pace for 1,000+ receiving yards for the Matt Ryan-led Falcons offense that ranked fifth in passing YPG in 2020.

Matt Ryan pulls out the trickery and somehow finds Julio Jones for a 40-yard TD.

Jones is a free agent at an interesting point in his career. I really suspect him to want to win a Super Bowl while playing for a talented QB. The Buccaneers recently witnessed the NFL goat return to their building and it appears they are ready to come out guns blazing to win a Super Bowl next season. I expect Brady to play for a contract well below his value and the superb Mike Evans has already restructured his contract.

* @TomBrady's last TD pass *

YOU THOUGHT.#TDTuesday pic.twitter.com/omHUTvn1Rw
— Tampa Bay Buccaneers (@Buccaneers) March 15, 2022

I fully admit that Julio is not the same WR that registered 1,871 yards in 2015, but I certainly believe he can be a Pro Bowl WR for the age-less Tom Brady in 2022. Brady’s offense ranked first in passing YPG and passing touchdowns last season. I believe Brady will be able to spread it around well to Mike Evans, Chris Godwin, and Jones.

It’s worth noting that Antonio Brown was often the WR3 last season, but he still unveiled 545 yards in 7 games in 2020. Furthermore, I don’t expect Julio to be a cancer in the locker room and find himself getting axed by Bruce Arians in the middle of the season.

It’s well noted that TB12 is really pushing for Julio to return to the NFC South and ink a contract with the Bucs. Time will tell if Brady’s wish comes to fruition, but I foresee Julio (and Gronk) joining another legend in Brady for his likely last ride in 2022.

The Atlanta Falcons may have only won 7 games in 2021, but they did outplay expectations in the eyes of many Falcons fans. It wasn’t an easy task for the Falcons offense to lift off without Ryan’s best friend Julio Jones and the talented Calvin Ridley.

Reminder that Julio Jones is one the best WRs of all time and one of the best to put on a Falcons jersey. pic.twitter.com/sMneQKkq3O
— Julius (@RiseUp4L) February 20, 2022

Matt Ryan didn’t allow the noise or obstacles to prevent him from throwing 3,968 yards and edging out foes like the Miami Dolphins and New Orleans Saints in very competitive matchups. Ryan is the highest-paid NFL player this offseason, as it’s widely enunciated. Nonetheless, Arthur Blank has spoken strongly of Ryan and I believe he will restructure his contract to remain a Falcon for the rest of his career.

I would love to see the Falcons add weapons to join Matt Ryan and Kyle Pitts. The Falcons can jolt their offense this offseason, rebuild their defense over the next couple of seasons, and I believe the Falcons can be a strong NFC contender for 1-2 seasons with him before he retires. They could also be immediate NFC South favorites in 2022 with Tom Brady out of the division if they retain Ryan and slightly improve their roster. If the Falcons ship off Ryan and they don’t have a Pro Bowl QB in the near future, the Falcons could really struggle for a few seasons.

Kyle Pitts is really about to go crazy year 2 pic.twitter.com/BaAsm6NvyZ
— Kenny G.

I expect the Falcons and Ryan to not divorce in 2022 and I expect them to add a few talented players to come out guns blazing next season. Here are a few profiles that would be logical fits for the Falcons.

JuJu Smith-Schuster

I don’t expect the Falcons to ink the golden free agent Michael Gallup or risk signing Odell with his injury and age, but I believe JuJu Smith-Schuster would fit in perfectly for the Falcons. JuJu (129 yards, 0 touchdowns) will likely take a prove-it deal and I think it would be tempting for him to take that route with Ryan and the Falcons. He can join a proven QB in Ryan and he can be the focal point of the offense with Ridley most likely finding the exit. The Steelers WR could also be fascinated about playing the Buccaneers and Panthers mediocre secondary twice a year. The Saints have Marshon Lattimore, but the points are always high in the Saints-Falcons showdowns.

Throwback to when JuJu Smith-Schuster called for a defender, then stiff-armed him ?? pic.twitter.com/iFuFVAEN5g
— ESPN College Football (@ESPNCFB) June 23, 2020

Xavier Rhodes

The Indianapolis Colts star cornerback Xavier Rhodes is old (31), but he has still been playing at a high level (19 pass deflections, 3 interceptions over the past two seasons). Rhodes could be interested in helping the Falcons defense match the Matt Ryan and Kyle Pitts-led offense. I wouldn’t place the chances of the Falcons inking JC Jackson or Patrick Peterson on a good level. They could be aggressive for getting a talented CB like Rhodes after the top free-agent CBs sign elsewhere. Rhodes would match up well against big, physical WRs like Michael Thomas and Mike Evans.

Desean Jackson

Desean Jackson is clearly past his prime, but I feel strongly about him being a nice value pickup for the Falcons. Jackson ousted 454 yards and two touchdowns at this very late stage in his career. He could certainly be a deep threat that the Falcons are missing. He might have one or two years left, but the Falcons could make more magic happen with him than nearly all WR-needy teams in the last breaths of his career. If the Falcons don’t bring back Cordaralle Patterson, it would especially be wise to replace him with the special deep threat WR. It may be time for Jackson to return to the NFC South.

Tennessee Titans are real Super Bowl contenders

By: Chris Thomas

Not too long ago the Tennessee Titans came within eleven points from completing their Cinderella story, defeating the Kansas City Chiefs in the AFC Championship, and making the Super Bowl. Instead, the Chiefs went on to defeat the San Fransisco 49ers in Super Bowl LIV and representing the AFC in the Super Bowl this past season. At this point, Kansas City appears to be the odds on favorite to win the AFC and appear in the Super Bowl for the third year in a row. However, the Tennessee Titans may have the best chance of making sure that doesn’t happen. Here is why the Chiefs should be considered with the Titans more than any other team in the AFC.

Outstanding weapons

It wouldn’t be shocking if Tennessee finished the season as the league’s number one offense. It would be extremely shocking if they finished outside the top-10. The Titans not only have the back-to-back rushing champion in Derrick Henry but they also have two Pro Bowl-caliber receivers in A.J. Brown and Julio Jones. The Titans acquired Jones from the Atlanta Falcons after the draft for a 2022 second-round pick. He is not only a replacement for Corey Davis, who signed with the Jets in free agency, he is a major upgrade. If the Titans’ three offensive playmakers stay healthy they should be able to rack up 1,000+ yards rushing/receiving.

It is fair to say that the Titans have passed the Chiefs as the team with the best offensive skill players. The Chiefs along with the Dallas Cowboys, Green Bay Packers, Minnesota Vikings, New Orleans Saints, and Tampa Bay Buccaneers have two offensive skill players on their roster that are capable of being named All-Pro at the end of the year. The Titans are not only the only other team in the AFC in that category but are the only team with three players capable of being named All-Pro at the end of the year. Kansas City hasn’t played a team with as much if not more firepower as them in the Patrick Mahomes era. That will change this season when the two meet in Week 7. The Chiefs’ defense features a few great players like Chris Jones, Tyrann Mathieu, and Frank Clark. However at best they are middle of the pack and do not have enough talent on that side of the ball to minimize the production of all three.

Ability to control the clock

The Super Bowl this past year exposed the weaknesses that the Kansas City Chiefs had not exposed to the rest of the league the last few years. The way to beat the Chiefs is with a stout pass rush, not allowing Patrick Mahomes to make dynamic plays, and keeping the ball out of the offense’s hands. The Buccaneers’ pass rush did not allow Mahomes to make plays downfield and he had to resort to checking the ball behind the line of scrimmage or tossing it up hoping his receivers were in a position to make a play. While Tom Brady and the offense were able to hold the ball to control the clock more than the Chiefs during that game. Holding onto the ball and taking advantage of their offensive opportunities allowed them to dominate the Chiefs the way they did during that game.

The Titans are well equipped to control the clock better than any other team in the league. They have the league’s most dominant running back over the last two seasons in Derrick Henry and a quarterback who is extremely smart with the ball in Ryan Tannehill. They have the firepower to get a lead early then hand the ball off to Henry over and over until the clock runs out. That has been the Titans’ bread and butter over the last two seasons. That firepower was just Henry last year and now it is their elite offensive trio that could get the Titans a lead early in games. Henry averaged a career-high 5.4 yards per carry last season. So if need be the Titans can rely on Henry to get them a first down in two or three downs, keep the clock rolling, and keep the ball out of the opponent’s hands.

A lesser-discussed part of the Titans offense is how efficient Tannehill has been as a passer. Since taking over he is well aware that the passing game comes second behind their rushing attack. So he does not feel the pressure to make big plays that other quarterbacks do. Tannehill has only thrown 13 interceptions over the last two seasons because he doesn’t have to make the risky plays other quarterbacks do. Rather than making big plays downfield, Tannehill could throw short passes to move the chains and keep the clock moving.

Similar Quarterback Production

The Titans quarterback Ryan Tannehill is more than a game manager. He has shown the ability to make big plays and big moments, especially in the playoffs. In late December, CBS compared the statistics of Tannehill’s first 24 games as the Titans starter and Patrick Mahomes’ statistics last 24 games. The results of this comparison are shocking enough and help the argument that Tannehill should be considered one of the better quarterbacks in the league.

Tannehill’s 114 passer rating beats Mahomes 105.9 passer rating during that span. However, Mahomes’ 6,983 passing yards is higher than Tannehill’s 6,080 passing yards. Shockingly Tannehill beat out Mahomes in total touchdowns with 61 to Mahomes’ 56. They both only threw 10 interceptions during that span. Finally, Tannehill had a higher completion percentage completing 67.7% of his passes while Mahomes completed 66.4% of his passes. If this was a competition Tannehill beat out Mahomes with a final score of 3-1-1 out producing him in three categories.

Now it is unlikely that Tannehill will join Mahomes in the best in the league conversation unless he takes home the league MVP this season. But the stats do show that the two are closer than many think. If it came to a battle of the better quarterback it may end up being a toss-up between the two.

Revamped Defense

This offseason the Titans have focused on retooling their defense. Last year the Titans’ defense was not good enough to get the team back to the AFC Championship. So they got rid of multiple starters including Jadeveon Clowney, Kenny Vaccaro, Adoree Jackson, Desmond King II, and Malcolm Butler. They went out and added big-name free agents like Bud Dupree, Denico Autry, and Janoris Jenkins. Then Tennesee drafted three defensive players with their first four selections including first-round pick Caleb Farley, second-round pick Monty Rice, and third-round pick Elijah Molden.

It appears that Tennessee swapped out their strength in the secondary to increase the talent level of their pass rush. Four members of the Titans starting secondary were cut during free agency but they signed two high caliber pass rushers to go along with the pass rushers they already had on their roster. Harold Landry has had 14.5 sacks for Tennesee over the last two years and former first-round pick Jeffrey Simmons is closing in on becoming one of the best defensive tackles in the league after his play the last two seasons. Now the Titans added Dupree who could very well have double-digit sacks and be named to the Pro Bowl this season and one of the most underrated pass rushers in the league the last couple of seasons Denico Autry. Dupree has had 19.5 sacks over his last 27 games. While Autry discretely had 20 sacks over the last three seasons in Indianapolis. The Titans should have no problem getting after opposing quarterbacks next season and beyond.

The reason why Tennessee may have changed the emphasis of their defense from an outstanding coverage team to a dominant pass rush likely has to do with the Super Bowl. Todd Bowles’s defense in Tampa Bay relies more on the play of their front seven than back seven. Their defensive line, pass rushers, and linebackers are all Pro Bowl-caliber players while their secondary is made up of young early draft picks who are capable of playing good enough coverage but are not considered lockdown. A defense with that makeup was able to defeat Tennessee’s biggest rival in Kansas City in the Super Bowl. So Titans’ general manager Jon Robinson decided to remake their defense in Tampa Bay’s image to get past the team standing between them and the Super Bowl.
