Running back Nick Chubb suffered a severe knee injury on Monday night and is now out for the season. It’s a devastating injury for the Cleveland Browns as Chubb was the centerpiece of their offense. The Browns now have some decisions to make on who will be the starting running back going forward. There are a couple of ways the Browns could go so let’s break down some of their options.

Jerome Ford

Jerome Ford filled in admirably for the Cleveland Browns after Chubb exited. He showed explosiveness and vision and was a threat in the passing game. Even though he looked the part in relief, can he handle the full-time role?

That’s tough to say as we haven’t yet seen Ford handle more than 16 carries in a game (which came on Monday night). That said, if they stay with Ford they wouldn’t have to give up any draft picks or take a hit against their cap.

Embed from Getty Images

Kareem Hunt

Update: Hunt has signed a one-year deal with the Browns worth up to $4 million.

Kareem Hunt is still a free agent which is somewhat surprising. Hunt is still only 28 years old and was productive in 2022 backing up Chubb. The fact that he is still available leads me to believe his asking price is too high for teams to pull the trigger. If that’s the case would he take less money to return to Cleveland?

Possibly, now that he knows he can handle the majority of the carries. Like Ford though Hunt’s most carries in a game in 2022 was 13. If Hunt was signed we would most likely see a mix of him and Ford.

Cam Akers

Cam Akers is once again in Sean McVay’s dog house and this time it looks like the Rams are ready to trade him. I like the fit here with Akers in the Browns offense and there are rumors they have interest. Akers would likely cost a mid-round draft pick and the Browns have 8 total picks next year.

I could see the Rams letting Akers go for a 5th or possibly a 6th and the Browns have two of each. Even in an up-and-down 2022 Akers had 7 rushing touchdowns and 786 rushing yards. At 24, Akers still has plenty to offer if he goes to the right situation.

Could Kareem Hunt land in Washington?

According to a recent report from Josina Anderson, Kareem Hunt is on the Washington Commanders radar. The free agent running back has yet to sign on with a team this offseason. In Cleveland, Hunt’s primary role was 3rd down back but his production dropped last year for the Browns. Hunt’s YPC (yards per carry) in 2022 was only 3.8 and despite being healthy all season he could only muster 678 all-purpose yards. At age 27, Hunt can still make an impact on the field if he goes to the right situation.

Familiar System in Washington

When Eric Bieniemy became the Washington Commanders Offensive Coordinator, I expected some ex-Chiefs to follow him. Washington did sign former Chiefs OL Andrew Wylie in free agency but no other former Kansas City players of note. It doesn’t shock me that Bieniemy would be interested in his former running back but is there room for him in DC?

The Commanders already have Brian Robinson Jr. and Antonio Gibson in the running back room and they drafted Chris Rodriguez Jr. from Kentucky. Robinson and Gibson should carry a majority of the load and Rodriguez Jr. is a wild card. The Commanders likely want a veteran presence that knows Bieniemy’s system to mentor the young players. While the role would likely be minimal, adding Hunt as an additional weapon is not a bad idea. The key will be if they can get him at a reasonable price.

Fantasy Angle

In terms of fantasy, this would not be an ideal scenario. Robinson and Gibson’s overall value would take a hit if the Commanders signed Hunt. More so Gibson, as Robinson has carved out his role as the goal-line back. Gibson’s ADP has been steadily rising as his potential in this offense is exciting. The addition of Hunt would tamper that hype and he would take away some touches from Gibson. There are still unknowns with this offense and how these roles will be defined.

Now that the 2023 NFL draft is in our rear view it’s time to look at the best players still available. Many teams hold off on signing free agents until after the draft. It’s a smart move as teams fill key positions and needs to help round out their roster.

There are still quality players available on the market that can make an impact right away. Some of these players may even hold off over the summer to see if any key injuries happen. With that being said let’s take a look at the top 2023 NFL free agents that are still available.

Kareem Hunt

The 27-year-old running back has yet to catch on with a team and may be waiting for the right fit. Hunt hasn’t been able to replicate his rookie form where he finished 2nd for Offensive Rookie of the Year. He is still young enough in running back years to make an impact. He will always excel as a change of pace back and on the right team could shine.

Ezekiel Elliott

It’s hard to believe Elliott hasn’t landed on a team yet. He still has some gas left in the tank and despite some chatter around the league, I don’t believe he is washed. Elliott may no longer be capable of being the lead back but he could succeed on a team needing a short-yardage running back. We recently covered some possible landing spots for Elliott as he gets closer to signing.

Jarvis Landry

At one point and time, Landry was one of the top receivers in the league. He has since taken a step back partly due to injuries. With that being said Landry can still be a dangerous weapon in the right system. There have been recent rumors of Landry being linked to Green Bay. The Packers need to address the WR position and Landry may be the answer.

Yannick Ngakoue

Ngakoue is another surprise on this list. He has 19.5 sacks over the last two seasons with two different teams. It’s likely Ngakoue is expecting a pretty big payday. That along with the fact that he can’t seem to catch on with a team for long is a bit of a concern. Keep an eye on the Chiefs here as he may be willing to take less to sign on with them.

Teddy Bridgewater

Teddy Bridgewater is not the flashiest name on this list but he can still play a key role. Bridgewater is an excellent backup QB option, which is still one of the most important positions. I would expect Bridgewater already has a couple of offers and is weighing his options.

Who is the best RB trade target for the Saints?

By: Jake Rajala

The New Orleans Saints Pro Bowl running back Alvin Kamara could face a six-game suspension for his unfortunate off-field incident at the 2022 Pro Bowl. With that said, I’m going to simply untwine three running backs that could be logical RB trade targets for the Saints — as they could help replace AK at the beginning of 2022.

Alvin Kamara and MJ on the racetrack ??

(via @NASCAR, @Saints) pic.twitter.com/Vl9zDCLMFQ
— Bleacher Report (@BleacherReport) June 25, 2022

Jeff Wilson

The 49ers simply have a loaded backfield in 2022. They have the elite ball-carrier Elijah Mitchell, the rookie Tyrion Davis Price, the fifth-year RB Jeff Wilson, and the motivated, second-year RB Trey Sermon. I really believe the Saints should be aggressive to land the 49ers third-string RB in Jeff Wilson. The 49ers could deal him for a late-round draft pick and still have three young, talented ball carriers in their offense. Wilson nicely had 600 rushing yds, 7 rushing TDs, and 3 receiving TDs in 2020.

Jeff Wilson Jr. x2

?: @NFLonFOX pic.twitter.com/OqoTnLVC9l
— San Francisco 49ers (@49ers) January 4, 2021

Raheem Mostert

The Saints have the power back in Mark Ingram, but they will miss the juice from AK in potentially the first six games next season. The Dolphins RB Raheem Mostert can certainly be the lightning to Ingram’s thunder. He notched 772 rushing yds and 8 rushing TDs in 2019. He was quite efficient in 2020, as he mustered out 521 rushing yds and averaged 5 yards per carry in 2020 (8 games played). Similar to Wilson, Mostert is in a loaded backfield in Miami and Mike McDaniel (aka the disciple of Kyle Shanahan) could ship out Mostert to the RB-needy Saints.

Kareem Hunt

It may be hard for the Saints to acquire Kareem Hunt or an RB with a similar caliber as Hunt. Nonetheless, the former Chiefs RB is easily the best RB2 (behind Nick Chubb) in the NFL at this moment. Hence, it may be easier to acquire Hunt than starting RBs that have less talent. Hunt registered 841 rushing yds and 6 TDs in 2020. PFF also suggested that the Saints should lobby for the brute RB in Cleveland.

Latest outlook of Kareem Hunt

By: Jake Rajala

The Cleveland Browns have a special talent in Kareem Hunt. The bowling-ball RB has often been an excellent partner to Nick Chubb and weapon in Kevin Stefanski’s offense. He might be a household name with success as an all-purpose RB, but he is also an aging RB in an offense that should really sling the rock with Deshaun Watson moving forward. With that said, I believe it’s important to untwine the outlook for Hunt. So, let’s begin.

Here is a closer look at how productive Hunt has been over the past two seasons in CLE:

2020: 841 rushing yards, 6 rushing touchdowns, 38 receptions, 304 receiving yards, and 5 receiving touchdowns

2021 (8 games played): 386 rushing yards, 5 rushing touchdowns, 22 receptions, and 174 receiving yards

Born and raised Cleveland baby the land till I die.”#Browns RB Kareem Hunt loves playing for his hometown team.
pic.twitter.com/yoQInmijYq
— Tyler Johnson (@T_johnson_TJ) September 28, 2021

Hunt is under contract with the Browns until the 2022 off-season and then it’s unclear where his next chapter will lie. On the horizon, Hunt should be a modest RB2 in PPR, but I don’t love his up-side on the Browns new-look team next season. Outside of him being the second option at RB for the Browns, I don’t expect the Browns to be a Top 8 team in rushing attempts for the third straight season.

The Texans ranked 31st in passing attempts in 2020 and I expect the Brown to lean on Watson and Amari Cooper to break down opposing defenses. Hunt, who had roughly 3 receptions per contest in 2021, should slightly benefit from the absence of Jarvis Landry and be involved in the Browns creative passing attack. I still wouldn’t feel comfortable that Hunt will be a 700+ yard RB and he shouldn’t be a legit threat in the passing game for the Browns.

Jarvis Landry turned down a 1-year contract offer from the #Browns pic.twitter.com/BWVd4XbltJ
— NFL Rumors (@nflrums) May 11, 2022

Hunt could be a sneaky Top 15 RB in PPR on a new team in 2023 and beyond. He might be 27 before Week 1 next season, but he has less wear on his tires in comparison to fellow RBs from his draft class. I expect him to leave the Browns and return to being a starting RB on a team like Buffalo or Tampa Bay after his Browns tenure. I expect Hunt to have a dip in performance from his 2020 outcome and then I honestly foresee him to be at least a Top-20 RB in PPR in a better situation for 2-3 more seasons after his Browns journey.

What is the outlook of Nick Chubb and Kareem Hunt?

By Calvin K (Twitter: @Calvin_SGF)

The Cleveland Browns have a backfield well-suited to the NFL, with a between-the-tackles power runner in Nick Chubb and an elusive change-of-pace pass-catcher in Kareem Hunt. While Hunt is technically the backup, he could probably start for the majority of NFL teams, and he consistently is efficient and effective even in his efficient role. Same with Chubb, who is one of the toughest and most consistent runners in the game. However, the fact that both take work away from each other can put a slight cap on their respective fantasy values, although the Browns’ run-heavy offense can offset much of that. In this article, I’ll unpack Chubb and Hunt’s value before arriving at the final verdict.

Nick Chubb & Kareem Hunt looking at the Browns roster pic.twitter.com/xArwUEHKiO
— PointsBet Sportsbook (@PointsBetUSA) March 14, 2022

Nick Chubb’s Outlook

After three straight years of top-10 finishes (excluding Week 18 in 2021 and Week 17 in 2020-2019), Chubb has established himself as one of the top fantasy RBs, and it’s honestly fair to say that Hunt doesn’t have a major negative effect on his fantasy value. Sure, his PPR value is diminished by low reception totals, but Chubb isn’t an amazing pass-catcher anyway, and if he were out on the field for 100% of snaps, his efficiency would drastically diminish. Speculation consistently abounds regarding Chubb’s potential without Hunt, but it’s very possible that the narrative of “Hunt limits Chubb” is overplayed.

With that being said, Chubb has now seen three straight years with a heavy workload and a couple of injuries, and at 26, he’s not too far off from the universally feared age 27 season that marks the end for many RBs. Chubb hasn’t shown any signs of slowing down yet, so that narrative can also be taken with a grain of salt somewhat, but it’s something to keep an eye on as he continues to maintain a heavy workload on the ground. Overall, Chubb can still be considered a borderline top-10 RB in dynasty. I’d certainly rank a younger back with immense upsides, such as Javonte Williams, ahead of him, but Chubb will still be consistently elite in the short-term, making him a solid trade target for a win-now team.

Not going for Nick Chubb in dynasty is straight up the same as refusing free money.#FantasyFootball @Browns
— Tim Lazenby ??

Kareem Hunt’s Outlook

Kareem Hunt’s outlook is murkier because recently, there’s been speculation that he could get traded from the Browns. Among the possibilities mentioned have been a reunion with Kansas City, as well as Houston as part of a Deshaun Watson package. None of these rumors have any actual traction behind them at this point, but they are two of a number of possibilities for Hunt’s future.

Right now, Hunt is a solid RB3 with his main upside coming in the potential for a trade. Hunt is certainly talented enough to be an NFL starter, and we shouldn’t let his primary usage as a pass-catcher make us forget about his ability on the ground as well. If he gets moved to a spot where he’s the clear starter, Hunt immediately jumps to solid RB2 status, with potential for more if he gets enough of a workload. If he stays in Cleveland, there’s no point in pursuing him in dynasty given his limited upside, but for a team looking to take a risk, he’s an okay trade target at the right price, given that a trade seems somewhat unlikely at this point.

My Dynasty team waiting to hear where Kareem Hunt gets moved?? pic.twitter.com/a1F6Kxzg3B
— Papi (@SnakeDraftViper) March 12, 2022

Final Verdict

Overall, Nick Chubb and Kareem Hunt’s fantasy values for next year likely will play out similarly to how they have in the past. Chubb will be a back-end RB1 with a high rushing total, and Hunt will be a semi-consistent PPR option that catches a lot of passes. A trade could certainly change this outlook, but as of now, there don’t seem to be rumblings of trade, at least in NFL circles. Thus, Chubb is probably the better trade target in the dynasty at this point, given that many managers may be looking to trade him at the right price given his current spot in a timeshare. Hunt has limited upside at this point, so he’s a good hold for consistency if you currently roster him, but he’s not someone that dynasty managers should look to trade for.

By: Michael Welsh

During the 2021 season, the Browns found themselves constantly coming up short and ultimately having a disappointing season. Through all of the bad, there were numerous bright spots, including some from players that need to be locked up in Cleveland long term. On the flip side, there were a few players that showed they may not be worth the money they’re making. First, let’s take a look at a few players that deserve contracts.

Jadeveon Clowney

Andrew Berry has made several excellent moves since being hired as the General Manager of the Browns in 2020. The signing of Jadeveon Clowney is arguably the best signing he’s done to date. Clowney had bounced around in the league since leaving the Houston Texans in 2018. He came to Cleveland with hope to earn a long term contract while playing on a one year prove-it deal. Needless to say, Clowney absolutely balled out for the Browns in 2021. He was, as usual, and elite run defender and he finished with 9 sacks, the most he has had since 2018. One of the most impressive things was that it was very noticeable when he wasn’t on the field. They felt like a different defense without him, and playing opposite of Myles Garrett definitely benefited his play. Having them play opposite of each other for years would make their defense even scarier. Andrew Berry needs to work to sign him to a 3 year deal for roughly $10 million a year.

Myles Garrett executes a speed chop/rip & works through a holding call by Bolles while Jadeveon Clowney dips & rips.

David Njoku

It is no secret that Kevin Stefanski loves his tight ends. They are a big part of his offense, and David Njoku has only gotten better since Stefanski took over as the head coach. The box score stats will not blow you away, but “The Chief” is arguably the only mismatch Cleveland has on their roster right now and his athletic ability is truly remarkable. His career as a whole hasn’t been consistent, but he fits this offense and appears to be ready to take another step. He has always improved as a blocker, which was below average at when he came into the league. Njoku was the Browns leading receiver in 2021 finishing with 36 receptions for 475 yards and 4 touchdowns. Adding to all of that, Njoku said in a press conference that he loves Cleveland and wants to spend the rest of his career here. Make it happen, Andrew Berry.

Baker Mayfield ?? David Njoku ?

Chargers v. Browns has been insane ??
pic.twitter.com/EDvDC5CFg0
— Sports ON Tap Brothers??

The next section will be hard to read if you’re a die hard Browns fan. There are a few players that the Browns could move on from, save money, and give that money to the players mentioned above and others such as Denzel Ward. Below are two players that Andrew Berry should cut/trade in the 2022 offseason.

Jarvis Landry

Some would argue that the culture change started when Jarvis Landry was traded to Cleveland in 2018. His leadership is unmatched and he’s great for the locker room. There is no denying that. The issue is, his production just doesn’t line up with his hefty contract. In 2018-2020, Jarvis had good seasons, including two Pro Bowl selections. Regardless of that, he is still overpaid and coming off the worst year of his career in 2021, finishing with 52 receptions for 570 yards and only 2 touchdowns. He looks slower on the field and struggles to get separation. There is some hope that he will restructure his contract and stay in Cleveland, but he can be cut and save the Browns almost $15 million in cap space. We will see what happens, but it may be better to move on from him entirely.

JARVIS LANDRY GETS LOOSE ?

Browns are pouring it on

(via @NFLBrasil)pic.twitter.com/fpAayaXrqM
— Bleacher Report (@BleacherReport) January 11, 2021

Kareem Hunt

This could honestly go either way, but there is a chance that Kareem Hunt gets traded this offseason. He and Nick Chubb have been a great one-two punch the last few years, but Hunt missed substantial time in 2021 and third string running back D’Ernest Johnson picked up the slack and looked great as the primary and secondary running back. The Browns could trade him for draft capital and save $6.25 million in cap space. It does make sense to let him get healthy and play out his last year of his contract, but if Andrew Berry wants to make a move, he has a good option in Hunt. A lot of teams would immediately use the former rushing champion as their starter. Johnson would also need a contract in this scenario, so there are a lot of moving parts. It will be interesting to see what happens

By: Andy Davies

Last season, the Cleveland Browns earned their first playoff appearance since the 2002 campaign and their first postseason win since New Year’s Day in 1995.

As a result, they went into the 2021 season with plenty of hype. However, it hasn’t worked out like this. The team’s current record is 5-5 and they are in a division where every team has at least 5 wins.

So, what has gone wrong for a team that many had down as AFC North division winners? Is there still a chance to win it?

The debut ? @obj getting ready to take the field for the first time as a Ram on #MNF pic.twitter.com/BM7vMIiNIm
— SportsCenter (@SportsCenter) November 15, 2021

Inconsistent Division

The short answer is yes, they can. The AFC North is fast becoming one of the most competitive divisions in the NFL, but no team has managed to get some sort of consistency. Baltimore Ravens fans will certainly tell you that.

They had a 5-1 start, which included a 46-35 win over the reigning AFC Champions Kansas City Chiefs. The week after beating the Los Angeles Chargers 34-6, a team that many have as a Super Bowl dark horse, they lost 41-17 to division rivals the Cincinnati Bengals. On Thursday night, they lost 22-10 to the Miami Dolphins, who were 2-6 before the game. More worryingly for the Ravens, the Dolphins appeared to show the entire league the blueprint as to how to beat them.

The Cincinnati Bengals were briefly top of the division just a matter of weeks ago but now sits in 3rd place. We have seen the excitement of the Joe Burrow and Ja’Marr Chase partnership but have equally seen the defense allow at least 34 points their last two games as they suffered defeats to the Browns and New York Jets.

There was a difficult start made by the Pittsburgh Steelers. Despite the surprise 23-16 win over the Buffalo Bills in Week One, they lost their next three games to go 1-3. However, they have not lost a game since and now sit 5-3-1. Head coach Mike Tomlin has never had a losing season, but they still have to face the Chargers, Ravens twice, the current AFC number one seed in the Tennessee Titans as well as Cleveland.

Cleveland themselves have to also play the Packers on Christmas Day and the rest of their AFC North rivals, but also get to play a 0-8-1 Detroit Lions and an inconsistent Las Vegas Raiders. Their schedule is fairly favourable, but they have to cut out their own erratic performances if they are to succeed.

Sorting Out Their Own Inconsistencies

The Browns have really struggled for consistency this season. They won three straight games after their opening day loss to the Chiefs but have failed to win consecutive games since.

If a team is to win championships, then they have to win games consistently. Whilst is it more important how you play in January than how you play in October or November, but you have to make sure you play in January past the regular season.

What have the great New England Patriots sides done in the past? Gotten a consistent run of good form down the stretch. This is exactly what the Browns need to do as runs like this help build momentum and confidence in the crucial postseason games.

The Baker Conundrum

Quarterback Baker Mayfield is easily one of the more polarising players in his position. There are some that feel he is the guy. There are others that view him as nothing more than a ”˜game manager’.

So far in 2021, he has 1,990 yards, 9 touchdowns and 4 interceptions. This has him projected to finish the campaign with just under 3,980 yards but crucially just under 18 touchdowns and 8 interceptions. This would have him at around his career best in terms of yardage but his worst season when it comes to touchdown passes.

His career so far has defined patchy. He had amazing seasons in both the 2018 and 2020 campaigns but has been poor in 2019 and 2021. He will be expecting a good season in 2022 judging by how his time as a pro has gone, but there is no guarantee he will earn his new contract. This ends after the conclusion of the 2022 season, which may see him raise his game. He has to be careful that he doesn’t suffer a further dip in form.

Quarterbacks such as Jimmy Garoppolo and Tua Tagovailoa may be available that would fit into the game manager role and allow the excellent run game to flourish. He will have plenty of suitors due to being the number one overall pick in 2018 and the two excellent seasons he has had but he will want to succeed in Cleveland. This is clear to see. One thing that hasn’t helped is the broken-down relationship with wide receiver OBJ.

The OBJ Dilemma

Say what you want about Odell Beckham Jr, the dynamic around him and Baker’s relationship cannot have helped things in Cleveland. Throughout Beckham’s time in Ohio, the talk of a lack of chemistry between the pair has been a constant talking point.

There is substance to this, with the fact that the Browns made the playoffs last season with Odell injured.

The loss of running backs Nick Chubb and Kareem Hunt to injury hasn’t helped, despite the best efforts of D’Ernest Johnson. The one-two punch of both backs reduced the need for Baker to throw to ball to. Instead, these injuries have meant Baker has had to throw to ball to. This can be seen by his stats, with Baker projected to throw for career highs in completed passes and his second highest total in attempted passes.

OBJ’s dad has posted videos on social media of the amount of times Beckham has been open and not received the ball. There is clear frustration from the Odell camp. Now that he has gone, along with the return of Chubb and Hunt, will help ease the tension at the franchise. Should the struggles ease, with such a good plethora of offensive and defensive talent, this should see head coach Kevin Stefanski guide them to another playoff appearance (or two). Should things further unravel, then Baker will be vastly looking over his shoulder at Free Agency and the 2023 draft quarterback prospects.

By: Brady Akins

It’s never fun to predict a downward spiral for anyway, especially football players.

These guys put their blood, sweat and tears into their work. Having some 23-year-old tell the internet that their effort is in vain isn’t fun at all. In a perfect world, everyone would be the RB1 and every player would get 100 touches a game and we’d all live happily ever after.

It isn’t fun having to project someone having a bad season.

But in terms of attempting to build the perfect fantasy football roster, it is a necessary evil.

Saquon Barkley just runs so mean @brgridiron

(via @thecheckdown)pic.twitter.com/jK11XiC8rE
— Bleacher Report (@BleacherReport) May 18, 2020

Kareem Hunt, Running Back, Cleveland Browns

Kareem Hunt might be one of the most talented running backs in the NFL, and he showed it last year, finishing as the overall RB10 with the Cleveland Browns.

Talent won’t be the issue for Hunt. Rather, it will be getting the necessary playing time to sustain another RB1 season with Nick Chubb still in the mix for Cleveland. Because as Chubb continues to blossom into the star running back he looks on track to be, Hunt’s role will continue to decrease.

We saw it last season. Even with his overall RB10 finish, Hunt’s production slowly dropped as the season went on, going from 14 carries per game through the first five weeks of the season, to less than half with 6.8 in the final five weeks.

Things weren’t any more promising in the playoffs, either, as Hunt saw a combined 14 carries over the team’s two playoff appearances in 2020.

What started as something close to a 50/50 split in the backfield turned into a major advantage for Chubb, who averaged 15 carries per game in the same timeframe that Hunt’s production dropped.

The tides might be shifting in favor of Chubb as the leading man in Cleveland’s backfield, which could mean the end of Kareem Hunt’s fantasy relevance.

Kareem Hunt DRAGGING kids into the end zonepic.twitter.com/A05MpiHckN
— PFF (@PFF) January 11, 2021

Saquon Barkley, New York Giants

The recent word on the street is that Saquon Barkley isn’t quite ready to play at 100% after suffering a season-ending ACL injury in Week 2 last year, and might miss practice time, or even game time.

This has led to some buzz that maybe Barkley should be faded as a high first-round pick in 2021. But my ultimate hot take is that Barkley should be faded even if he is fully healthy.

After a monster rookie season back in 2018, Barkley has been a far cry from the player that the world fell in love with. The following year, his rushing production dropped from 1,300 yards to 1,000, his pass-catching volume dropped from 91 catches to 52, and his touchdown total was nearly cut in half from 15 to 8.

And in the short sample size we saw from him in 2020, Barkley didn’t do much to quell any concerns that 2018 was an outlier, with a six-yard showing on 15 carries in his only full game of the season.

The concept of Barkley as a fantasy running back is exciting. He’s crazy athletic and has rookie tape of him being a dominant runner and pass-catcher. But the reality of Barkley’s game since then has changed. Since Daniel Jones has taken over under center, Barkley’s receiving production has cratered from 7.4 targets per game with Eli Manning at quarterback to 5.3.

In fact, Barkley averaged more catches per game with Manning (5.4) than he gets targets per game with Jones. And now with the additions of two new receivers in Kenny Golladay and Kadarius Toney, Barkley’s receiving volume might continue to decrease.

Add that to an inconsistent history of rushing and a 2019 season barely over 1,000 yards on the ground, and what you have is a 2021 season with the odds stacked against Barkley as anything more than a very low-end RB1 in deep leagues.

How will Browns RB Kareem Hunt and Nick Chubb perform next season?

By: Michael Welsh

The Cleveland Browns arguably have the most talented backfield in the NFL, and going into 2021 it could be even more dangerous than it was in 2020. Nick Chubb, fresh off signing a contract extension, is fully healthy and ready to go. Kareem Hunt has been looking great in training camp, and rookie RB/WR hybrid Demetric Felton has been very impressive.

Even though Felton has looked good, there is a chance that he makes the team as a wide receiver and the Browns bring back D’earnest Johnson to be the third-string running back. Many believe that Johnson won’t make the team, though. For arguments sake, we will move forward with the idea that the third-string running back in Felton. Let’s take a look at the stat line predictions for the Browns backfield.

Nick Chubb

The Browns have an absolute stud in Nick Chubb, who is entering his fourth NFL season. An argument can be made that he is the best running back in football, especially as a pure runner. He is vital to Cleveland’s offense and he should have another great season since the elite offensive line had no turnover. Chubb missed four games with an MCL sprain in 2020, but barring no setbacks in 2021, he should play “every single game”. He has averaged over five yards per carry in every year since he arrived in the NFL.

1,255 yards, 5.3 YPC, 10 touchdowns

22 receptions, 190 yards, 2 touchdowns

Nothing #Browns fans love more than seeing Nick Chubb run the ball. pic.twitter.com/yIyxO0vqKg
— Camryn Justice (@camijustice) August 8, 2021

Kareem Hunt

There are several teams in the NFL that could use Kareem Hunt as their number one running back. The Browns are very fortunate to have two rushing-title-capable-backs on the same roster, and Kevin Stefanski knows how to use them both well. There is a good chance that Hunt and Chubb can both have 1,000+ yards, which is very rare in today’s pass heavy league.

1,022 yards, 4.4 YPC, 7 touchdowns

44 receptions, 380 yards, 4 touchdowns

Kareem Hunt + Nick Chubb = NFL's best RB duo

RIGHT?!pic.twitter.com/isnydcwKT1
— Pro Football Network (@PFN365) August 8, 2021

Demetric Felton

There is a solid chance that Demetric Felton gets minimal touches out of the backfield this year, but if he does it will likely be catching the ball. The Browns are reportedly testing him out at kick/punt returner as well, so there could be more opportunities there for him. In the event of a blowout, Kevin Stefanski might put him in at running back to give Hunt and Chubb some rest. Overall, don’t expect big numbers out of him this season

122 yards rushing, 4.2 YPC, 1 touchdown

11 receptions, 133 yards, 1 touchdown
