The Saints pass rush will dominate in 2022

By: Jake Rajala

It was clearly “open season” for the New Orleans Saints pass rush against the mythical Tom Brady in their last battle, as the Saints had four sacks and seven QB hits against TB12. The Saints captain Cameron Jordan, who always carries a chip on his shoulder, ousted two sacks (and a pivotal forced fumble) against Brady – which led him to garner NFC defensive player of the week.

Cameron Jordan forces the fumble from Tom Brady and the #Saints get the ball back ?

pic.twitter.com/fcHtLkdPrk
— Sportskeeda Pro Football (@SKProFootball) December 20, 2021

I believe that Jordan, who is also coming off his fifth straight Pro Bowl, will have better help hunting opposing signal-callers in 2022 than last season. The Saints pass rusher Marcus Davenport, aka the profile that Dennis Allen once called the Saints best defensive player, has gifted power and he even earned a whopping 88.8 grade by PFF last season (and that stands above Jordan’s PFF grade: 84.3). The key issue with the former UTSA defender is that he’s missed 11 games in the past two seasons combined.

There are two reasons that should make Saints fans more optimistic about the player that Mickey Loomis dealt two first-round picks to acquire. For 1. Davenport has climbed the ladder in overall talent in each of his past four seasons. I can’t guarantee that Davenport won’t miss two or five games, but I foresee him continuing to improve his pass rush abilities in his fifth season. The second reason that I like Davenport’s chances of having a monster 2022 season is that he is entering a contract year. He will really leave everything out on the field (which may include playing through minor injuries) in 2022, so he can cash in during free agency in the 2023 off-season.

Marcus Davenport sacked Tannehill using his own left tackle.

pic.twitter.com/hYkANpYMFt
— Jordan Dajani (@JordanDajani) November 14, 2021

The Saints quietly have a third former first-round pick DE in Payton Turner. The NFL world didn’t get a proper taste from the 6’6, 270 lb DE – due to him only playing in five games (and recording one sack) in 2021. Nonetheless, I really believe a healthy Turner will take a big jump from last season and be one of the biggest x-factors on the team. Nick Underhill of New Orleans. Football expressed on Twitter that Turner shined in yesterday’s practice & Katherine Terrell (and ESPN Saints reporter) stated on the bird app that Turner had several good reps yesterday. She also stated that Turner is playing in the 280s. Turner (who can beat out Davenport for the next role for Thor) has also been in tamed fights with 2022 first-round pick Trevor Penning. He has more experience, size, and fire this off-season, to say the least.

Welcome to the NFL, Payton Turner! pic.twitter.com/UUxMKFsXmY
— Ben Fennell (@BenFennell_NFL) September 20, 2021

The Saints aren’t only time traveling to bring back their two, behemoth edge rushers, but they will also witness the underrated & healthy Tanoh Kpassagnon wreak havoc in 2022. The former Kansas City Chiefs edge rusher was a part of the Saints walking dead squad last season – as he missed nine games. Regardless of his injury-riddled 2021 campaign, he registered four sacks and eight QB hits in eight contests – which matched his 16-game best sack total from the 2019 season. It would be an understatement to say that he’s one of the best fourth-string defensive ends in the NFL.

The Kansas City Chiefs offense can score at will against any opponent, but they could certainly benefit from more pass rush talent on their defense. With that said, I’m going to simply untwine three pass rushers that would be logical trade targets for the Chiefs.

Marcus Davenport has Aaron Rodgers rethinking the whole Jeopardy! thing pic.twitter.com/vJWYcEfXap
— Christian D'Andrea (@TrainIsland) September 12, 2021

Marcus Davenport

The New Orleans Saints pass rusher Marcus Davenport hasn’t quite cultivated into a reliable force on the field (11 missed games in the past two seasons combined). Nonetheless, Davenport is utterly productive in his on-field snaps. He registered an 88.8 grade by PFF last season. The Saints have two lethal pass rushers not named Marcus Davenport in Cameron Jordan and Payton Turner. They may be open to trading the slightly inconsistent Davenport, who is entering the final year of his contract.

Derek Barnett

The Philadelphia Eagles have one of the most talented front sevens in all of football. They brought in Haason Reddick (23.5 sacks in the past two seasons combined) and Brandon Graham will return healthy. With that said, the Eagles could be open to dealing with their young pass rusher, Derek Barnett. He has slightly underperformed, but he still has three seasons with 5+ sacks and 16+ QB hits. He could help the Chiefs have a fine pass-rushing rotation — as he also has sneaky upside.

Derek Barnett with the rejection and the recovery. #FlyEaglesFly pic.twitter.com/LM9RgojHKx
— Philadelphia Eagles (@Eagles) October 29, 2017

Robert Quinn

The Bears shipped away the mythical figure in Khalil Mack this off-season. It wouldn’t be a complete surprise if the rebuilding team traded the expensive, 32-year-old pass rusher Robert Quinn, as well. Quinn could be the cherry on top for the Chiefs team, as he is coming off a monster 18.5 sack season. Kristopher Knox of Bleacher Report suggested that the Chiefs should consider acquiring Quinn. The former Ram would be the most challenging profile to acquire, but he may be worth it.

Who is the most underrated pass rusher?

By: Jake Rajala

The NFL is a passing league — which means it’s also a pass-rushing league. The 2022 DROY winner was T.J. Watt, who unveiled 22.5 sacks and tied Michael Strahan’s sack record. The NFL world is all too familiar with Watt and Aaron Donald in this day in age. Hence, I’m going to untwine five pass rushers that are under-the-radar and could turn heads in the upcoming season.

Montez Sweat sacks Aaron Rodgers. #DLU pic.twitter.com/LQOfEIrd9p
— Tru Maroon Nation (@TruMaroonNation) October 24, 2021

Montz Sweat

The Washington Commanders pass rusher Montez Sweat had 16 sacks and 33 QB hits in his first two seasons combined. Unfortunately, he didn’t have a spectacular 2021 season — largely because he missed seven games. Sweat is healthy and he is playing across from an ascending pass-rusher in Chase Young. I expect Sweat to really benefit from the attention that the former DROY will warrant in 2022.

Markus Golden

The days of Chandler Jones having 5+ sacks in a single contest for the Cardinals is over. Jones is in Las Vegas, so the Cards defense will lean on Markus Golden to be a Pro Bowl-caliber player. Golden impressively had 11 sacks, 19 QB hits, and 10 TFLs last season. Golden has had two 11+ sack seasons without a Pro Bowl berth. He will work towards his first Pro Bowl season in 2022 — as a healthy J.J. Watt (10 missed games in 2021) on the IDL should help him get quality production moving forward.

Marcus Davenport

The Saints pass rusher Marcus Davenport is easily the most underrated player on the Saints. The Saints HC/former Saints DC Dennis Allen referred to him as the best player on the Saints defense in the early part of 2021. Unfortunately, Davenport has serious injury habits (11 missed games in the past two seasons combined). He was still able to have 9 sacks and 16 QB hits last season. PFF gave him an unearthly 88.8 grade, as well. If he can stay healthy for 15+ games, he could wind up with All-Pro honors.

Marcus Davenport sacked Tannehill using his own left tackle.

pic.twitter.com/hYkANpYMFt
— Jordan Dajani (@JordanDajani) November 14, 2021

Gregory Rousseau

The Buffalo Bills may have inked a future Hall of Famer in Von Miller, but it’s important to not forget about Gregory Rousseau coming off the edge. The 2021 first-round pick was labeled the Bills x-factor by Bleacher Report. He had 4 sacks as a rookie, but he could really blossom in year two with Miller on the other side. It also helps that he has Leslie Frazier, who was named the NFL’s best play-caller by Pro Football Focus.

Emmanuel Ogbah

The Dolphins pass rusher Emmanuel Ogbah has 18 sacks in the past two seasons combined. PFF gave him a strong 77 grade, as well. He should definitely benefit from the Dolphins bringing in Mike McDaniel, Tyreek Hill, and the entire direction of the Phins offense. Due to the impending fireworks from the Phins new-look offense, I surely expect opponents desperately trying to keep pace with the Phins offense. Hence, the Dolphins pass rushers should have a plethora of sack opportunities moving forward.

Emmanuel Ogbah just missed the NFL top 100 list coming in at number 103 #FinsUp pic.twitter.com/wwvOCdjR6o
— Bobby Shouse (@B_Shousejr) August 28, 2021

Saints defensive end outlook in 2022

By: Jake Rajala

The New Orleans Saints have a loaded defensive line led by the annual Pro Bowler Cam Jordan. The former 2011 first-round pick for the Saints is coming off a 12.5 sack season – as he was also the NFC Defensive Player of The Week in Week 15 and Week 17 a season ago. Jordan, who will certainly miss Matt Ryan in an Atlanta Falcons uniform, should have plenty of gas in the tank for a prominent 2022 season. Nonetheless, it’s pivotal that his younger teammates on the edge can take positive strides soon – as the 32-year-old DE can’t wreak havoc forever.

It’s pivotal that Marcus Davenport, who was called the team’s best defender by Dennis Allen early in the 2021 season, can stay healthy and oust a Pro Bowl-caliber season. Ian Wharton of Bleacher Report pegged Davenport as one of his five breakout players in 2022. Although, it may be a risk for DA to prioritize Davenport – who is a 2023 FA – as he has a long track record of missing ball games (17 missed games in the past four seasons).

With Jordan and Davenport’s long-term outlook a bit of a question mark, it’s very important that the Saints 2021 first-round pick Payton Turner steps up to the plate. Turner was a disappointment last season (1 sack, 3 QB hits), in 5 games to say the least. He has unique power, but he needs to learn from Cam how to improve his pass-rush moves and not learn from Davenport how to stay healthy in year two.

Marcus Davenport and Payton Turner need to continue to stay in bubble wrap until week 1. https://t.co/1M1BtpLF8r
— Da Boot (@DaBootTragedies) June 14, 2022

If the Saints can have their best defensive ends stay away from the injury report, they could honestly have a similar three-headed pass-rushing trio as their 2020 unit (Cam, Marcus, and Trey Hendrickson). Outside of the Saints top-three behemoths on the edge, they also have Tanoh Kpassagnon (who quietly had 4 sacks in 8 games in 2021), Carl Granderson (8 sacks in the past two seasons combined), and Taco Charlton (2017 first-round pick). It could be said that the Saints arguably have the most well-rounded DE unit in the league.

The Jacksonville Jaguars selected the mighty pass rusher Travon Walker first overall and it’s clear JAX really aspires to return to being recognized as “Sacksonville”. The former Georgia defender that was prioritized over Aidan Hutchinson should help the Jags defense harass fellow AFC South quarterbacks for many years to come.

The soft-spoken, mammoth-like edge rusher has superb power. He has the size (6’5, 276 pounds) and he ran a 4.51 40-yard dash at the NFL combine. The 2022 DPOY candidate and Cleveland Browns gifted pass rusher Myles Garrett is 6’4, 271 and he ran a 4.64 40-time. Marcus Davenport, who was Pro Football Focus’s most effective pass rusher after a month of football last season, displayed a unique combination of speed (4.59) and size (6’6, 265 pounds) at his NFL combine.

The NFL gods handed defenders like Davenport and Clowney rare ability, but it’s clear that injuries have haunted these utterly explosive pass rushers. Davenport and Clowney both registered nine sacks in 2021, but each pass rusher has missed 11 games in the past two seasons combined.

Hopefully, Walker can be as productive as Garrett (All-Pro in 2020 and 2021) and remain as healthy as the Browns elite defender (two games missed in 2020 and 2021 combined). Walker proved to be a healthy force last season (0 missed games), as he was a key warrior in their win over Alabama in the National Championship. In the CFB grand contest, Walker had a sack, a very impressive seven QB hurries, and a potential touchdown-saving tackle.

Tremendous effort by DL Travon Walker #44.

The Jags understand that Walker realistically has a HOF ceiling and a quality floor. He will surely hit the ground running with a Jags DL that will help him succeed as soon as possible. The Jaguars carry a fierce edge player in Josh Allen and it’s safe to say that it will be hard for opposing teams to double-team each DE. The Los Angeles Rams really allowed Von Miller to capitalize off his matchups next to Aaron Donald, as he notched four sacks in the recent post-season gauntlet. The Jags ranked 28th in sacks a season ago, but they should feel comfortable in their new stout pass-rushing tandem turning the Jags defense into an opposing QB’s worst nightmare.

A Cameron Jordan trade might be genius and very unpopular

By: Jake Rajala

The New Orleans Saints long-time pass rusher Cameron Jordan has been sacking Matt Ryan since the Declaration of Independence was signed. Jordan ousted his 100th career sack in December and he’s clearly going into the Saints ring of honor when he retires. Here is a closer look at how dominant he has been in his career:

107.5 career sacks

seven-time Pro Bowl selection

All-Pro in 2017

10 seasons of 7.5+ sacks

missed only one game in his career (due to COVID)

GET OUT THE WAY FOR CAMERON JORDAN ??#ATLvsNO | ?: FOX pic.twitter.com/2jxSyRsx7W
— New Orleans Saints (@Saints) November 7, 2021

It’s clear that Jordan has been a pillar of consistency and dominance throughout his Saints tenure. Nonetheless, I don’t believe the grass is greener on the other side of the fence for Jordan. He’s shown signs of slowing down. He might have captured everybody’s emotion and attention for his late-season heroics in 2021, but he was often MIA in the first half of the 2021 season. In 2020, he had 7.5 sacks and he was even bullied by tight ends on multiple occasions.

Jordan is playing at a position (DE) on the Saints that is filled with talent. The Saints were even featuring Trey Hendrickson in 2020, but they let him leave and watch him almost win DPOY in his first season in Cincy. Hendrickson knocked out 15.5 sacks and he was more potent in the playoffs.

Trey Hendrickson. Super Bowl SACK. #RuleItAll

?: #SBLVI on NBC
?: https://t.co/K02y40b5Nu pic.twitter.com/SS9zh1573s
— NFL (@NFL) February 13, 2022

On the DE outlook, the Saints have Jordan, Marcus Davenport, Payton Turner, Tanoh Kpassagnon, and Carl Granderson. One thing is clear: the Saints are loaded at the DE position. Marcus Davenport was one of the most efficient edge rushers per PFF in 2021 and Dennis Allen has called him the best player on his defense. When Davenport comes off the edge, it seems like the OT blocking him will automatically be pushed back into the QB.

Marcus Davenport with a runway is a bad sign for Zach Wilson. ? pic.twitter.com/EKCXSdHff9
— Daniel Jeremiah (@MoveTheSticks) December 13, 2021

Jordan is 33 years old this offseason, while Davenport (25 years old) and Turner (23 years old) have a plethora of potential. I believe the combination of potential on DE and the age of Jordan should make the beloved Cam expendable. Tanoh is quietly a modest pass rusher, as well (four sacks in 2021).

We’ve seen Payton ship out Jimmy Graham for OL talent and draft picks. I do believe that Allen is less likely than Payton to trade away profiles like Thomas, Ramczyk, Kamara, and Jordan. Although, it might be a wise move to trade away Jordan (and draft picks), especially if they can reel in a QB in a Cam trade.

The #Saints have made big trades in the past involving key offensive players.

– They traded Jimmy Graham in 2015.

– They traded Brandin Cooks in 2017.

Got a first round pick back in both trades.
— Ari Meirov (@MySportsUpdate) September 1, 2020

Outside of Aaron Rodgers and Russell Wilson (assuming they stay on their team), there are QBs like Jimmy G, Garnder Minshew, Kirk Cousins, that could be acquired in a Jordan trade. I also strongly believe Jordan is the best trade chip out of Alvin Kamara, Michael Thomas, Ryan Ramczyk, Marshon Lattimore, and Demario Davis. Jordan will soon have grey hair and he’s playing at the Saints packed edge rusher position.

The Saints can make sure they retain Davenport with Jordan’s salary out of the pass rusher bank. Turner and Davenport can the long-term pass-rushing tandem. Jordan (and Mark Ingram) might be the most popular players on the team, but I don’t see him being a true Pro Bowl-caliber beyond two more seasons with the Saints.

They could really use QB help and Jordan would be a smart piece to move. In 2024, Jordan could be retired, Davenport could cash in elsewhere, Hendrickson has already left, and their QB could be Mitchell Trubisky. I believe the prior scenario is really scary, but it’s very possible of happening. If the Saints don’t bring in a QB that’s capable of capitalizing off their loaded roster and bringing them to the Super Bowl soon, they should look at shipping out talented, veterans (cough, cough, Cameron Jordan).

Saints DE Marcus Davenport may be from another planet

By: Jake Rajala

When Saints defensive end Marcus Davenport takes the field, you will surely witness the closest thing to an offensive tackle being pushed back into in a quarterback’s lap every play. In 2021, the 25-year-old DE for the Saints has truly learned to utilize his 6’6 frame and 4.58 40 time in 2021. Nonetheless, the injury bug has continued to hurt the edge player’s appearances, as he’s only played “eight of the 14 games” this season.

Davenport and Jadeveon Clowney struggle to contain their giant-like frame mixed with a near Olympic runner explosion, as they’ve routinely been injured in their playing careers.

Even if Davenport has been MIA in six contests this season, the player has been productive and the utmost efficient when healthy and on the field. On October 26th, it was well painted how Davenport was the “most effective edge player” by PFF. As it stands now, Davenport is the third-ranked edge defender per PFF. The DE has not been a reliable source of health Still, it’s been a roller coaster ride strapped with dynamite for the fourth-year pass rusher.

Marcus Davenport with a runway is a bad sign for Zach Wilson. ? pic.twitter.com/EKCXSdHff9
— Daniel Jeremiah (@MoveTheSticks) December 13, 2021

Here is a deeper look at Davenport’s key stats on the season:

6.5 sacks in eight games (translates to 13.8 sacks in 17 games)

Nine tackles for loss (equals 19 TFLs in 17 games)

The Saints DE is like a bolt of lightning when he comes off the line of scrimmage. Saints defensive coordinator has proudly called Davenport the best defensive player. It’s not a slouch comment by Allen, especially when the Saints defense fields Marshon Lattimore, Demario Davis, and Cameron Jordan (NFC defensive player of the week in Week 15). His playmaking ability has been blatantly obvious in the run and pass game. As portrayed above, the Saints DE would be in the conversation as one of the top defensive players in the league if he could stay on the field just a bit more.

Saints GM Mickey Loomis made a bold decision to trade two first-round draft picks to acquire the UTSA prospect Marcus Davenport in 2018. Leading up to 2021, Davenport was widely considered a bust for missing a few plus games a season and only having 12.5 career sacks to show for it. Yet, it appears in this day in age the Saints DE could complete a career season of production, potentially help the team in the playoffs, and show Who Dat nation he’s transforming into the player he was expected to be on draft day.

Marshon Lattimore leads a scary Saints defense

By: Jake Rajala

Every individual that has heard of the sport called American Football predicted the Green Bay Packers to win their Week 1 matchup against the “rebuilding” New Orleans Saints. Many analysts even suggested that Packers would win and it wouldn’t even be a close matchup. Well, what exactly happened?

The Saints, who were without Michael Thomas, Bradley Roby, and Will Lutz, went into the matchup and absolutely mopped the floor against the loaded NFC favorite in the Green Bay Packers. The Saints wounded up unveiling 38 points and allowing a mere three points against the 2020 MVP Aaron Rodgers.

Tough start to the season for Aaron Rodgers ?

(via @NFLonFOX)pic.twitter.com/4zeLEfSDOc
— Bleacher Report (@BleacherReport) September 12, 2021

So, does that mean that the Saints team was very underlooked heading into the matchup and it’s time to give them a boatload of credit? The answer to that is apparently not. Instead of handing the Saints its true due, countless national sports outlets just state the Saints “played well” or the “Saints were the more prepared team”. They will go on to state the narrative that Rodgers was sluggish and just happened to have the “worst game of his career” because he didn’t show up until training camp. At the same time, many of these analysts believe/admit A-Rod will quickly turn things around in Week 2.

I don’t see the national crystal ball reasoning behind Rodgers’s absence as a major factor in his horrid performance. It’s fun and easy to poke at Rodgers’s new mantra and the fact that he was reluctant to be a Packer for much of the offseason. However, it wasn’t like Rodgers took a plane from Hawaii to Jacksonville in early September. The former MVP has been in sync with the Packers for many weeks already. Also, this new idea of “not showing up until training camp” correlated with a disastrous Week 1 performance didn’t become a thought until Aaron Rodgers came along. I believe many people are taking the combination of taking the opportunity to jab at the polarizing QB and not admitting they were wrong about the Saints. It also could be said that the Saints couldn’t have played any better against Aaron Rodgers to garner the large praise they deserve, simply because they couldn’t have played any better.

I actually believe that Rodgers isn’t a large portion of the blame and that the Saints defense will go down as the top unit that Rodgers will have faced this season (barring a second matchup). Here is why the Saints defense deserves a significant approval rating and why the unpopular Rodgers truly faced a wall in Week 1.

absolute superglue coverage from Marshon Lattimore on All-Pro Davante Adams on 4th and 2 pic.twitter.com/XiHfYv5EwE
— Christian D'Andrea (@TrainIsland) September 12, 2021

Marcus Williams and Marshon Lattimore

Remember the Saints historically great draft class in 2017? Well, profiles like Marshon Lattimore, Alvin Kamara, Marcus Williams, and Trey Hendrickson were all taken by the great organization. Well, I believe some of these players that actually found great success early on in their careers, are just evolving into their prime selves in year five. Most notably, the Saints CB Marshon Lattimore and Saints FS Marcus Williams seemed to have transformed into more talented studs.

Marcus Williams had one of the best plays of his career in Week 1 against Aaron Rodgers. The Packers future Hall of Fame QB actually got Williams to play towards Adams’s side of the field on a deep passing route, which led to Rodgers quickly turning and unleashing a bomb to Marquez Valdes – Scantling. Williams managed to allow Rodgers to believe he had him falling for a pass intended to Adams, but managed to see Scantling go deep down the field and trace back to make a great play on the field. In live-action, it seems like Rodgers just threw a prayer, but it was a route combination that GB practiced and Williams truly made an outstanding play on the football field. This is the same Willams that Payton has called a very smart football player and safety that showed his athletic ability at the NFL combine (top vertical jump, third in broad jump).

Rodgers threw this ball all the way downfield for an Interception and Marcus Williams take it into the 20 https://t.co/eoHish7f66
— , (@dubs4o8) September 12, 2021

We know Williams had a great Week 1 showcase, but Marshon Lattimore was also very stout in a day that would also turn to be a huge payday. On a 4th downplay, Lattimore beautifully broke up a pass against one of the top WRs in Davante Adams. Lattimore routinely shut down Adams and when he missed a drive, his value to the defense showed, as GB marched up and down the field. Thankfully, Lattimore returned and his value resurfaced in the game. Saints will also have the prominent CB Bradley Roby in the fold moving forward.

Saints LB tandem

The Saints found one of the all-time FA (free agent) gems in Demario Davis a few years back and he continues to make the case as one of the game’s best LBs. Davis has been ranked as the top LB by PFF in the past and he’s arguably the best LB against the run in the league. He’s a huge reason why the Saints can play two safeties on the back end against elite passing offenses and hold up against the run. He now also introduces the pre-game speeches with Brees out of the locker room.

“Our team is facing adversity…

Our city is facing adversity – but we ready!” ?

– @demario__davis #Saints pic.twitter.com/LR3URmhuo3
— New Orleans Saints (@Saints) September 12, 2021

We know Davis is a Top 100 football player in the NFL, but re-signing Kwon Alexander to pair with him was a very underrated move. If the Saints didn’t acquire one of the fastest LBs in the league, there may have been a few more first downs picked up last week by the Packers offense. Then who knows what the Packers could have done with a stronger rhythm. Alexander was able to chase down not only Jones from a few yards away and hold him from picking up a first, but he was making great plays on WRs in the open space. When Alexander is healthy, the Saints have one of the best 1-2 punches at the LB position.

DL Depth

The Saints didn’t have David Onymeta and no longer have Sheldon Rankins (despite Rankins usually being MIA), but the DL had a strong performance against Rodgers. Sure, the Packers were missing interior OL and didn’t really attack the Saints DTs. Yet, when the Saints DL was tested at various spots and on occasion, the Saints held up in defensive trenches. As mentioned, the Saints are reaping the benefits of already solid young players taking that next step. It was easy to witness 2018 first-round draft pick Saints DE Marcus Davenport growing into full form, as he had a sack and TFL against GB. Davenport will miss a few weeks with an injury, but he will be back for the majority of the season, and for the crucial game matchups against Tom Brady.

Outside of Davenport taking the next step, the Saints have numerous playmakers on the DL. The veteran Cam Jordan showed he still has a lot of gas left in the tank as he essentially quickly pressured and forced Aaron Rodgers into throwing his first INT of the game. The Saints also reaped benefits from first-year Saint Tanoh Kpassagnon, who managed to get home on a pass rush when the Saints just sent three down linemen at the QB. Then there is even one other pass rusher that is left to attack QBs: Saints 2021 first-round draft pick Payton Turner. The Saints will undoubtedly have the best edge-rushing rotation when Turner sees the field moving forward and when Davenport returns from his minor injury for the large chunk of the season. The Saints ferocious pass rush will truly continue to prove to complement the back end quite well in all of 2021.

New Orleans Saints training camp preview

By: Jeremy Trottier

The New Orleans Saints have had a relatively interesting offseason, between clearing cap space by cutting players, to extending Ryan Ramczyk, to their draft prospects. With that said, one of the positions on the defense that is most solidified right now is defensive end, between Cam Jordan, Marcus Davenport, and Payton Turner as the top rotation. In this article, I will be going over each of these three players, as we could see a duo of any mix of them, as well as what they contribute to this unit as a whole.

????? ???????? @camjordan94! ?

Show our guy some birthday love in the comments ??#Saints | @Invisalign pic.twitter.com/lb4F91pXG9
— New Orleans Saints (@Saints) July 10, 2021

Cam Jordan

The veteran of the group, Cam Jordan, is going into his 11th season of his career, and has not had a season of under 7.5 sacks since his rookie year. Despite having a relatively quiet year last season on the stat sheet, his productivity as a player cannot be understated, as he caused a lot of QB pressures, hurries, and hits. He had 16 QB hits, 26 pressures, and 8 QB knockdowns. He also took some of the pressure off Trey Hendrickson, as he would often take on two offensive linemen at once which freed up the rest of the line to provide pressure.

Cam Jordan will be vital in teaching the other two edge rushers we are looking at in the article today, as he has a huge deal of experience in the league. He also says he is feeling, “more rejuvenated than ever” ahead of the 2021-2022 season, which is a huge deal as his mentality is another thing he brings to the roster. He is the “hype man” of the front four for New Orleans and having him believing in himself that he is the best he has ever been is great news.

Payton Turner

The Saints 2021 first round pick from Houston, Payton Turner, is one of the more interesting prospects from this draft class. He fits exactly what the Saints are looking for with players, fantastic physical profile who can produce at multiple positions, hence why they drafted him so early. At 6’6” 268 pounds, with an 83 inch wingspan and 10.5 inch hands, he has a very good frame for the Saints to build off of, and teach him the nuances of NFL level defensive line.

One of the most impressive things to note is Payton Turner outperformed himself statistically in 2020 in a lot of categories”¦but Houston only played less than half the games they normally do due to Covid (five games). He had 10.5 tackles for loss, five sacks, a forced fumble, and 25 total tackles. This is an absolutely phenomenal statline for so few games played, and shows Turner has the capability to produce due to his athletic traits.

Marcus Davenport

Another Saints first round pick, but in 2018, we wrap the list up with Marcus Davenport. Another DE with a fantastic frame at 6’6” 265 pounds, and is still only 24 years of age, 25 by the start of the 2021-2022 season. The main issue Davenport has to date is injuries, it seems like every time he really starts to produce he goes down and we do not see him again for awhile. Just to list off his injuries since his draft year, here they are:

2018 ”“ Thumb fracture, had surgery prior to season, no games missed

2018 ”“ Toe sprain on right foot, 3 games missed

2019 ”“ Foot fracture (Lisfranc fracture), season ending surgery after week 14

2020 ”“ Elbow bruising, missed three games and practices prior to season

2020 ”“ Pedal toe sprain ”“ missed week 4

However, when he is not injured he has been an absolute monster in the games he started. In 2019 when he started 13 games, he had 6 sacks, 3 forced fumbles, 16 QB hits, 17 pressures, 6 QB knockdowns, and 9 hurries. If he starts this season or even splits with Payton Turner, and if he stays healthy, he will most definitely contribute to this front-seven without a doubt.
