The 2022 NFL season did not go as planned for the Indianapolis Colts. They had high hopes that newly acquired quarterback Matt Ryan would find new life in Indy. That wasn’t the case as Ryan struggled through much of the season and was eventually benched. There is now a new quarterback and head coach running the show for the Colts. Will that lead to success next season? Let’s find out below with a preview and record prediction for the 2023-2024 season.

The Good

Although raw, Florida quarterback Anthony Richardson showed in college he can be an unstoppable force. The 6’4″ Richardson is built like Cam Newton but is more explosive. There were questions on how long it would take Richardson to adjust to the NFL after just 13 starts for the Gators. The Colts have seen enough to believe he is ready now and named him the starter going forward. I like the aggressive move as Richardson needs all the reps and new head coach Shane Steichen will devise a gameplan for him to succeed.

Embed from Getty Images

Speaking of Steichen, I was a big fan of this hire for Indianapolis. Steichen elevated Eagles quarterback Jalen Hurts to one of the most dangerous weapons in the league. He used the RPO offense to perfection to keep opposing defenses off balance. This formula propelled the Eagles all the way to the Super Bowl before they eventually lost to the Chiefs. Expect Steichen to once again work his magic on Richardson and make him a successful dual-threat quarterback.

The Bad

All summer long the running back position has dominated the headlines. There is a disconnect between how much running backs think they’re worth versus how valuable the league sees them. Regardless of your stance, one can’t argue the value of Jonathan Taylor. In 2021, Taylor was the league leader in scrimmage yards (2171) and total touchdowns (20). While injuries cut his 2022 season to just 11 games he was still able to rack up over 1,000 all purpose yards.

Despite all that the Colts are unwilling to pay him and he has since requested a trade. This is not what the Colts need as they are trying to change the culture and start a new era. If they do trade Taylor it will only hurt the development of Richardson going forward.

The Prediction

There will be ups and downs this season for the Colts as they look to develop their young quarterback. Richardson will no doubt make highlight reel plays but also plenty of mistakes. It’s important for the Colts staff to be patient as he develops and they will reap the rewards in the future.

2023 Record: 7-10 (3rd in the Division)

Is Matt Ryan overrated in 2022

By: Jake Rajala

Matt Ryan has been a steady sharpshooter at the quarterback position since he was drafted by the Atlanta Falcons third overall in the 2008 NFL Draft. Matty Ice threw 4,000+ passing yards for 10 straight seasons (from the 2011 season through the 2020 campaign). The clean-cut QB has also thrown six seasons of 28+ passing touchdowns. In 2016, he even won the holiest award (MVP) by throwing 4,944 passing yards, 38 passing touchdowns, 7 interceptions, and having a 69.9 completion percentage. Furthermore, he led his team to the big dance in the 2016-2017 season (despite it not ending well). It should also be noted that Drew Brees, Troy Aikman, and Russell Wilson don’t even possess an MVP ring.

Matt Ryan's 2016 MVP season was something special.

Now time to bring those talents to Indy.@M_Ryan02 | @Colts pic.twitter.com/YwyZ5zI2zu
— NFL (@NFL) March 21, 2022

However.

Ryan’s baggage tells a different tale.

The god in the 2-minute drill didn’t oust a winning season in 2018, 2019, 2020, and 2021. He also hasn’t thrown 30+ passing TDs since the 2018 season. Without Julio Jones, the former Falcons QB registered 3,968 passing yds (fourth-lowest in career), 20 passing TDs (second-fewest in career), and 12 ints in 2021.

I anticipated Ryan to excel in a Colts uniform, but it was clear that he couldn’t uplift his young wideouts & new offense in Week 1. The rook Alec Pierce dropped a pass in the end-zone for an easy touchdown. In a less appetizing fashion, Ryan unleashed an interception to DE Jerry Hughes in Week 1, as well.

“Matt Ryan will fix everything”

(via @HoustonTexans) pic.twitter.com/Hlb5Zurvhn
— RJ Ochoa (@rjochoa) September 11, 2022

At this point, I do feel Ryan is a tad overrated. I don’t love that he failed to put down the Houston Texans — even with a productive Jonathan Taylor. It’s worrisome that he doesn’t have Alec Pierce next week & that his WR group with or without Pierce isn’t sexy. I would be ecstatic if the Colts signed OBJ – which would bring a lot of optimism to the Colts fan base.

I’m not also a big fan of how the Colts QB compares to other AFC field generals. I wouldn’t be blind-sided if Tua Tagovailoa and Carson Wentz (which is a bit ironic) have a more robust 2022 campaign with their new weaponry. Ryan may very well be a future Hall of Famer & he could find a groove with the Colts at some point, but it doesn’t look like he will mow down opposing defenses and be a Top-10 QB in the near future.

Best darkhorse MVP candidates

By: Jake Rajala

There are clearly a lot of gifted football players in the year of 2022. The spot-light undoubtedly is handed to the top quarterbacks in the NFL. The cream of the crop QBs garner expectations to win the most prestigous, individual award: MVP. Well, I’m going to roll out the red carpet for a few under-the-radar QB faces and even non-QB players. Without further ado, here are my 10 best darkhorse MVP candidates in the 2022 season.

Matt Ryan

The 2016 MVP, Matt Ryan, is back in a situation where he is surrounded by sexy offensive pieces. Ryan will enjoy utilizing Jonathan Taylor (1,811 rushing yards and 18 rushing touchdowns in 2021), Michael Pittman Jr (1,082 receiving yards in 2021), and Alec Pierce (Colts second-round pick in 2022) – who is seen as an OROY favorite by countless NFL heads. I also absolutely love Matty Ice’s 30th ranked schedule in 2022.

Matt Ryan said he wanted to go somewhere that was "built to win" after 14 seasons in Atlanta. The 37-year-old landed with the #Colts.

"I feel like there's a lot of football left in my tank and hopefully, however long that era can go, we can make it a successful one." @WTHRcom pic.twitter.com/eDhfhV0wR4
— John Doran (@JohnDoranTV) September 1, 2022

Jameis Winston

Bart Scott isn’t in the wrong for believing that Jameis Winston can win MVP in 2022. Jaboo has a hungry & healthy Michael Thomas, a legendary slot WR in Jarvis Landry, & a talented rookie WR (Chris Olave) that has dazzled this off-season. Furthermore, he’s on a Saints team that has constantly mopped the floor against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

Justin Jefferson

The Minnesota Vikings nicely unveiled a sophmore season (108 receptions, 1,616 receiving yards, and 10 touchdowns) that was more potent than his rookie season (88 catches, 1,400 receiving yds, and 7 TDs). Jefferson is in a shiny new offensive scheme with Kevin O’Connell and he clearly will have plenty of creative assignments. He shouldn’t just set his sights on being the next wideout to win OPOY, as he should aspire to win MVP.

Most receiving yards through two seasons in NFL history:

1. Justin Jefferson: 3,016pic.twitter.com/o72IzdOAUC
— Field Yates (@FieldYates) August 27, 2022

Kirk Cousins

I may be cheating with slotting two Minnesota Vikings back to back. Nonetheless, I really believe Kirk Cousins is due for a career season – after throwing 33 touchdowns to 7 interceptions last season. Captain Kirk has had a 100+ passer rating in each of his prior three seasons. Furthermore, he’s made the Pro Bowl in two of his past three campaigns.

Dak Prescott

The warrior Dak Prescott unveiled a career-best 37 passing touchdowns to 10 interceptions last season. Prescott also had a 68.8 completion percentage (personal-best). Despite Amari Cooper leaving town, I expect Prescott to improve from last season with an ascending Ceedee Lamb & a healthy Michael Gallup. Even if Prescott sits on a potentially overpopular squad, I still believe he’s an underrated MVP candidate.

Mac Jones

The sophmore QB from Alabama, Mac Jones, ousted 3,801 passing yards, 22 passing touchdowns (to 13 interceptions) a season ago. He was gifted a trip to the Pro Bowl after his succesful 2021 outing. Of course, he shined on and off the field at the PB. I forsee Jones taking a signifcant step forward in year two with Devante Parker. If he can edge out the Buffalo Bills once (or twice), he can certainly improve his MVP chances.

How many days until kickoff?@MacJones_10 | #ForeverNE pic.twitter.com/YfYs9Zuoar
— New England Patriots (@Patriots) September 1, 2022

Trevor Lawrence

I honestly love the direction with the Jacksonville Jaguars offense. The Jags offense has gifted Trevor Lawrence a healthy Travis Etienne, the explosive Christian Kirk, and the match-up nightmare in Evan Engram. Lawrence had a rough rookie season, but he has more firewpoer and a much wiser head coach than a season ago.

Micah Parsons

Micah Parsons is simply a freak of nature. I believe he will soon be regarded as the best defender to come out of the draft since Aaron Donald. Parsons had an unbeliveable DROY season (13 sacks, 30 QB hits, 20 TFLs, and 3 FFs). He was given first-team All-Pro honors for his rookie efforts, as well. I believed Parsons can be DPOY in 2022, while he very recently made it clear that he believes he can be MVP in the upcoming season. I certainly won’t disagree with him after his take.

Cowboys LB Micah Parsons: “Last year, I was trying to find myself. This year, I know exactly who I need to be.”

Who is that?

“The best player in the league.” pic.twitter.com/jIv9SgglqT
— Jon Machota (@jonmachota) September 1, 2022

Tua Tagovailoa

The young Dolphins signal-caller Tua Tagovailoa is likely head over heels with his potent supporting cast. He has the fastest WR tandem (Jaylen Waddle and Tyreek Hill) in the league. He also has his own young, offensive wiz head coach in Mike McDaniel. Perhaps Tagovailoa can have a lot of victories & make an infinite amount of splash plays.

J.C. Jackson

There have only been two defensive players to win MVP and it may not be a surprsie to state that neither of those profiles were a cornerback. J.C. Jackson may just be the first CB to win MVP! He had 9 ints in 2020 and 8 ints last season. He will certainly have a plethora of more opportunities to dominate in a Chargers defense that features Khalil Mack and Joey Bosa. There will also be A LOT of desperate opposing teams that try to keep pace with Justin Herbert – which could spell that oppposing QBs will be pressured into more mistakes.

Will Matt Ryan be cast into Canton?

By: Jake Rajala

The Indianapolis Colts made a beautiful, unexpected move in acquiring Matt Ryan this off-season. Matty Ice has been a stat machine and a clutch performer throughout his 14 seasons in the NFL. Ryan has accumulated 59,735 passing yards and 367 passing touchdowns in his career. His best season unequivocally arrived in 2016 when he unleashed 4,944 passing yards, 38 passing touchdowns, 7 interceptions, and won regular-season MVP. Let’s not forget that Ryan led his squad to the Super Bowl in the 2016-2017 season, as well (despite the Falcons having a heart-breaking loss).

A performance for the ages.

– 392 Yards.
– 5 Touchdowns.@M_Ryan02 in the 2016 season NFC Championship game was phenomenal.@AtlantaFalcons ? pic.twitter.com/sOXNZtx16V
— NFL UK (@NFLUK) March 27, 2021

As Ryan enters a new chapter in his career with the Indianapolis Colts, there is already a fascinating question that many NFL (and Atlanta) fans have regarding Ryan: Is Matt Ryan a future Hall of Famer?

I honestly do believe that Ryan is already a future Hall of Famer. Of course, Ryan and the NFL world would give him a lot more props for picking up his first Super Bowl ring. However, I believe his consistent high-end success & authentic triumphs (even stacked with unusual losses) should place him in Canton if he retired today. Although, I don’t believe he would be a first-ballot HOFer if he hung up his cleats today.

Ryan stacks up well to the former Dallas Cowboys QB Tony Romo (and current NFL analyst) and I believe the former Boys QB is headed to Canton. Here is an in-depth look at Ryan’s resume and Romo’s resume:

Ryan

59,735 passing yards

367 passing touchdowns

65.5% completion percentage

120 victories to 102 losses

MVP in 2016

Four-time Pro Bowl selection

First-Team All-Pro in 2016

Romo

34,183 passing yards

248 passing touchdowns

65.3% completion percentage

78 victories to 49 losses

Four-time Pro Bowl selection

Ryan and Romo also differ in other ways, as well. Ryan stands as the seventh-best QB in comebacks of all time (33 comebacks), while Romo has 24 comebacks in his career (which rank at 18th of all time). Meanwhile, Romo has a career passer rating of 97.1 & Ryan carries a passer rating of 94.2.

Tony Romo highlights just hit different. ?

(via @nflthrowback) pic.twitter.com/WwLVMZ770r
— SportsDay Cowboys (@dmn_cowboys) February 11, 2021

All in all, I believe that Ryan has a slightly more impressive career output than the former Boys gunslinger. Hence, I do conclude that Ryan already deserves to be in football heaven and he could perhaps be a first-ballot HOFer if he wins his elusive Super Bowl ring.

Who is the best AFC South quarterback?

By: Andy Davies

The AFC South has been won by the Tennessee Titans, but the addition of Matt Ryan by the Indianapolis Colts and the loss of A.J. Brown for the Titans means the division is as usual, very wide open.

Since 2013, all four teams in the AFC South have won the division. However, who has the best quarterback?

In our final quarterback ranking list, here are your AFC South quarterback rankings.

Ice Ice Baby ??@M_Ryan02 | @Colts

?: #INDvsBUF at 4pm ET on @NFLNetwork
?: Stream on NFL+ https://t.co/Dz9p0l5Mjq pic.twitter.com/A06ZD19Qgq
— NFL (@NFL) August 13, 2022

1. Matt Ryan (Indianapolis Colts)

The only MVP winner in this list, Ryan joined the Colts this offseason after over ten years with the Atlanta Falcons.

In 2021, he still managed to throw for 3,968 yards, 20 touchdowns and 12 interceptions. Unless injury strikes, Ryan will reach the 60,000 career passing yards mark, currently being 265 away. Only seven players have previously reached the 60,000 mark and Ryan , who is currently eighth on the list for most career passing yards, can eclipse Phillip Rivers into sixth place on the list should he throw at least 3,705 yards or more.

A really good season, where he throws at least 33 touchdowns will also allow Ryan to reach 400 career passing touchdowns. He would become just the eighth player in NFL history to reach the 60,000

Whilst he showed signs of ageing last season, he still makes it as the best quarterback in this list, in what is a bad bunch.

2. Ryan Tannehill (Tennessee Titans)

Tannehill was an eighth overall pick in 2013, when he was selected by the Miami Dolphins. However, injuries and inconsistent play (as well as bad coaching) saw him eventually traded to the Titans in 2018.

He came in for Marcus Mariota mid-season and ended up winning Comeback Player of the Year. Over the course of his career, he has thrown for over 30,000 passing yards, 199 touchdowns and 102 interceptions. Despite this, he has shown signs of decline in the past twelve months.

In 2021, he threw for 3,734 touchdowns, 21 touchdowns and 14 interceptions. This is a stark contrast to the 33 touchdowns and 7 interceptions he threw in 2022.

His position as the Titans’ starter is also in question, with the team choosing to draft Liberty QB Malik Willis in the third round of the 2022 NFL Draft. He showed his potential in Thursday night’s preseason game against the Baltimore Ravens, completing 6 of his 11 passes for 107 yards as well as a 7-yard touchdown run.

Tannehill has proved to be a good quarterback for Tennessee, excelling in particular when using RPO plays. However, he has yet to prove he can be the guy to take the Titans to the next level.

This was proved in their Divisional Round when the number one seed Titans lost to the Cincinnati Bengals, despite Joe Burrow being sacked nine times. Tannehill threw three costly interceptions, and his future has been questioned ever since.

Despite having running back Derrick Henry and a brilliant head coach in Mike Vrabel, the loss of A.J. Brown could end up being the final nail in the Ryan Tannehill Titans coffin.

Davis Mills is legit. pic.twitter.com/Tc1jgRSx7m
— Nick Penticoff (@NickPenticoff) July 3, 2022

3. Davis Mills (Houston Texans)

Houston could be a realistic destination for Tannehill should the team decide they don’t want to pursue long term with their current starter Davis Mills.

Mills was drafted 67th overall out of Stanford and actually had a solid first NFL season in 2021. He was arguably the second-best rookie quarterback in a class that albeit did not exactly light up the league. In 13 games, he threw for 2,665 yards, 16 touchdowns, and 10 interceptions.

These are neither outstanding nor terrible stats. He did a solid job in a season of turmoil, with everything that went on off the field.

Solid is exactly why Mills is third on this list. He wasn’t terrible but also hasn’t quite done enough to break into the top two.

Trevor Lawrence ends up getting to a throw but got hung up on whatever that Marvin Jones route was at the bottom of the screen pic.twitter.com/JD36wuSZeX
— Nate Tice (@Nate_Tice) August 14, 2022

4. Trevor Lawrence (Jacksonville Jaguars)

The 2021 first overall pick had a torrid rookie year but is now free from a dysfunctional Urban Meyer. He threw for 3,641 yards, 12 touchdowns, and 17 interceptions.

However, he can no longer use the Meyer excuse with new head coach Doug Pederson. Should Lawrence have another bad year, there will be more and more usage of the word “bust”.

Right now, it is hard to put him anywhere but the bottom of this list. Despite this, should he fulfill the potential that we all saw in Clemson, then he will certainly be a lot higher than fourth.

The latest outlook for the Atlanta Falcons QBs

By: Jake Rajala

The Atlanta Falcons may have moved on from a well-accomplished Matt Ryan and decided to roll with the complex dual-threat quarterback in Marcus Mariota and the accurate, dual-threat rookie Desmond Riddler. Yet, it appears that the Falcons have been impressed with the former Oregon Duck/veteran QB so far. Per The Falconholic, Mariota (who is seen as the favorite to start in 2022) was a stud in OTAs today, as went 8/10 with 3 TDs and 1 interception. He notably delivered a beautiful throw to Kyle Pitts for a touchdown.

Stacking days ? pic.twitter.com/E6QwcgxzY5
— Atlanta Falcons (@AtlantaFalcons) June 7, 2022

It’s especially positive that Mariota has been a superb passing QB, as he can also be a threat with his legs. Mariota ran for 357 yards in 2018 and he also had five rushing touchdowns in 2017. It’s clear that Mariota offers a skill set that hasn’t been available with Matty Ice.

Of course, Mariota took a mature path and learned behind Derek Carr for a couple of seasons. The Saints starting QB Jameis Winston (who was drafted one spot before Mariota) decided to learn under Sean Payton and behind Drew Brees in 2020. He earned the keys to the gig in 2021 and led a Michael Thomas-less team to a 5-2 record last season.

Jameis Winston to Aaron Rodgers today: #Packers #Saints pic.twitter.com/aaIiIhmyrO
— Ryan Brodo (@Ryan_Brodo) September 12, 2021

Mariota, who had three straight winning seasons from 2016 to 2018, could certainly be capable of being a quality QB. Most importantly, Mariota is only 28 years old – which isn’t old in QB years. He could finally put together his accuracy, legs, and decision-making in 2022.

Mariota signed a two-year contract worth $18.75 million dollars with the Falcons.

The rook in the QB room impressed his squad to draft him over Malik Willis and he has continued to impress the Falcons in camp up to this point. Per The Falconholic, John FitzPatrick (Falcons TE) called Riddler a leader and Tyler Allgeier (Falcons RB) stated that Riddler is a genius. He hasn’t been quite as sharp on the field as Mariota, but his work ethic combined with unique dual-threat ability could propel him to eventually be the future long-term starter for the Falcons — if Mariota isn’t the next surprise NFL QB for the Falcons.

Who is the best darkhorse MVP candidate?

By: Jake Rajala

The NFL is clearly highlighted by the supreme talent of many quarterbacks. Signal-callers like Tom Brady, Aaron Rodgers, and Patrick Mahomes have been chosen by the football gods to wreak havoc on opposing defenses and unveil unearthly stats. It’s expected that an elite QB that’s typically displayed stardom over the past few years will win MVP honors next season. Nonetheless, it’s very normal in today’s league that a darkhorse player could win MVP. With that said, here are three underrated prospects that could potentially win MVP next season.

.@DCarr8 was a little too excited to talk about the possibility of @derekcarrqb winning MVP ? #RaiderNation pic.twitter.com/ZIxXdilH9t
— NFL Total Access (@NFLTotalAccess) April 5, 2022

Derek Carr

The LV Raiders QB Derek Carr threw for the fifth-most passing yards last season and led his team to a playoff appearance. He will have a healthy Darren Waller (Waller missed six games last season) and newly acquired Davante Adams (most targeted WR (the second-most targeted WR in 2021). I fully expect the former Fresno QB to really increase his production and become a Top 5 QB in passing yards and passing touchdowns next season.

Only player with over 50 receiving TDs in the last 5 seasons

?

Jameis Winston

I wholeheartedly believe Jameis Winston was the most underappreciated QB last season. It appears that many fans forget that Winston was 5-2 as the Saints QB in 2021 (including an odd loss against the Carolina Panthers when the Saints were missing several coaches). Furthermore, Winston was playing well without Michael Thomas (Top 5 WR in the NFL) last season. Expect Winston to be prolific with a healthy MT and potentially Jameson Williams in 2022. He will also have an elite defense to help him dominate against Tom Brady and likely unleash 11+ wins in the 2022-2023 season.

Matt Ryan

The Indianapolis Colts QB Matt Ryan was left out to try with the Atlanta Falcons last season. He didn’t have Julio Jones and Calvin Ridley missed 12 games last season (to say the least). Matt Ryan was still efficient with poor weaponry last season and he should be confident in having a Top 8 QB performance with the stellar Colts roster next season. He will have the 2021 MVP candidate Jonathan Taylor, Michael Pittman, and likely another quality WR in his arsenal.

Matt Ryan can lead the Colts to an AFC South title

By: Jake Rajala

The Tennessee Titans won the AFC South and managed to snatch the number one seed in the AFC last season. I believe the Indianapolis Colts could have a 2022 outcome that is similar to the Titans 2021 expedition. Jonathan Taylor is entering his prime, while Derrick Henry appeared slightly worse and beaten up in the back end of 2021.

Just a reminder, #Colts new QB: Matt Ryan has receiving weapons behind him as well: @JayT23. pic.twitter.com/FxfZhxmaEK
— Lawrence Owen (@Colts_Law) March 26, 2022

Taylor will be joined by the stud veteran Matt Ryan moving forward, as well. It’s clear that Ryan is the best QB in the AFC South. Here is a closer look at how productive Ryan Tannehill was last season:

2021: 3,734 passing yards, 21 passing touchdowns, 14 interceptions

Tanny will also not have Julio Jones, who has officially broken up with Ryan and Tannehill. It’s hard to foresee him being a stat machine in 2022.

With that said, here is an overview of Ryan’s success last season:

2021: 3,968 yards, 20 passing touchdowns, 12 interceptions

Ryan was slightly more efficient than Tannehill last season, but I believe Ryan was still significantly more impressive than Tanny in 2021. Pro Football Focus stated that the Titans had a Tier 2 offense heading into the 2021 season, while the Falcons were a Tier 3 offense with Calvin Ridley. It’s obvious that Ryan was fighting with a Tier 4 or Tier 5 offense after Ridley missed a whopping 12 games last season.

This empty alignment vs Saints coverage would have me wishing for a T.O. if I were a Saints DC and magically had more than 3 TOs Cordarrelle Patterson for a field-flipper on third down #Falcons pic.twitter.com/pwn7SBAncq
— Matt Waldman (@MattWaldman) November 7, 2021

Ryan’s presence will be pivotal in head-to-head matchups against the Titans. The Titans edged out the Colts in both matchups last season. The Colts couldn’t manage to beat the Titans in a game that was fought in overtime. I would be shocked if the Colts don’t split games with the Titans at the very least next season.

The Titans also won six games by 3 or fewer points in 2021. Meanwhile, the Colts lost four games in overtime or by 3 or fewer points. I expect the Colts to win more utterly competitive games under Matty Ice next season, while the Titans should be less attractive in close matchups next season. It would be ideal if the Colts are expected to win 11+ games next season, while the Titans are unveiled as a 9+ win squad in 2022.

Why the Falcons could surprise in 2022

By: Jake Rajala

The Atlanta Falcons are truly more complex than the INFJ personality type. The Falcons brought back Cordarrelle Patterson and then traded away their beloved QB Matt Ryan. I believe the Falcons would have preferred to keep Ryan after whiffing on the Deshaun Watson trade, but they will have to steer the ship forward without their long-time QB.

BREAKING: Falcons agree to trade Matt Ryan to Colts for third-round draft pick. (via @RapSheet, @MikeGarafolo, @TomPelissero) pic.twitter.com/yEGVMSZgoD
— NFL (@NFL) March 21, 2022

The Falcons moved swiftly to replace Ryan by signing Marcus Mariota. I believe the Falcons are “slowly retooling” their squad with Mariota at QB. I don’t expect the Falcons to have a fire-sale and they should still hold their heads high in 2022. With that said, here are a few reasons why I believe they are underrated right now.

Terrific CB tandem

I love the signing of Casey Hayward and the Falcons new-look CB group. A.J. Terrell and Hayward (who isn’t washed up) are arguably a Top 5 CB tandem and it will pay massive dividends.

The Seattle Seahawks and the New England Patriots really leaned on their secondaries to win their most recent Super Bowl trophies. It’s clear that a terrific CB duo can really carry a team. It’s really beneficial to the Falcons that they have a potent CB duo in the NFC South, where they play Tom Brady and the Saints offense twice a season each.

A.J. Terrell — PFF’s highest-graded CB — with the interception ?
pic.twitter.com/95ZlNfDUtQ
— PFF (@PFF) January 2, 2022

The style of Marcus Mariota

Matt Ryan really has a higher ceiling than Marcus Mariota as a pocket passer, but it doesn’t mean he would be a significantly better fit than Mariota in the Falcons average offensive unit. Ryan clearly wasn’t a rockstar last season (3,968 passing yards, 20 passing touchdowns) in 2020.

Mariota might be able to be an upgrade over the 2021 version of Ryan, as he can help his offense slowly decompose opponents. The NFL world witnessed Josh Allen really run over defenders last season and help the Bills have the fifth time of possession. Mariota and Patterson could be a nuisance against teams like the Saints (who have really struggled against Jalen Hurts and the Eagles) and the QB-RB duo could also help their defense get more rest on the sidelines.

The Falcons just signed Marcus Mariota to a two-year deal ?

(per @FieldYates, via @NFL)pic.twitter.com/BBSRlncXeH
— Overtime (@overtime) March 21, 2022

The rise of Kyle Pitts

The Falcons young TE Kyle Pitts had one of the best rookie seasons for a TE in a long time. It’s clear that Pitts will look to build off a 1,000+ yard season in 2021 (second rookie TE to ever have 1,000+ yards in a season) and he should be a more popular target with Calvin Ridley officially out for the 2022 season. Pitts is only 21 years old and he will be a lethal weapon for Mariota and potentially a new QB for many years to come.

Latest outlook with Matt Ryan on the Colts

By: Jake Rajala

The Indianapolis Colts have made fascinating and truly bright quarterback moves this offseason. The Colts shipped out Carson Wentz after virtually sacrificing him on any online Jacksonville altar and then deemed it necessary to find a more sharp veteran QB to replace Wentz.

On March 21st, the Colts acquired the savvy former Falcons legend, Matt Ryan. The Colts received Ryan, while the Falcons scooped up a third-round pick. Pat McAfee has already screamed to the rooftop on how Ryan can be the game manager that the Colts need at the very least. It appears that Ryan and Jonathan Taylor are an impressive QB-RB duo, but the Colts still have to add more fuel to their offense and team this offseason.

Got him.

Welcome to Indy, @M_Ryan02! pic.twitter.com/pm28m8DBdN
— Indianapolis Colts (@Colts) March 21, 2022

Ryan is truly an underrated QB that can take care of the football, make the right adjustments, and be clutch in the 2-minute drill (after all, his name is Matty Ice). From 2018 to 2020, Ryan unveiled three 4,500+ passing yard seasons and he also averaged 29 passing touchdowns in that three-year span.

I do believe that Ryan is wiser than Wentz and he can operate the play-action game with JT better than Wentz. I still wouldn’t expect Ryan to have drastically different numbers than Wentz in the near future. The former Colts QB threw 27 passing touchdowns last season, 7 interceptions, and he also threw 3,563 yards. I do believe that Ryan will be a difference-maker in clutch moments.

The Colts lost a plethora of matchups by a razor-thin margin last season. Indy lost the following matchups: Week 17 against the Raiders by a field goal, a Week 2 blood-bath against the Rams, a Week 5 game against the Ravens, and a Week 8 loss against the divisional foe in Tennessee.

What happened to the Colts yesterday DBut??

"From the jump the Raiders just looked like they wanted it more & I'm very worried about Carson Wentz" ~@DariusJButler#PatMcAfeeShowLIVE #ForTheShoe pic.twitter.com/YgTlvmco1p
— Pat McAfee (@PatMcAfeeShow) January 3, 2022

All in all, the Colts will have a stronger likelihood of making the playoffs with the switch from Wentz to Ryan next season. He will have Michael Pittman (1,082 yards, 6 touchdowns), but he desperately needs a WR2 and WR3. If the Colts can bring in a modest WR and/or potentially T.Y. Hilton, I would expect Ryan to be more explosive than Wentz for the Colts in the near future, but I don’t believe he will look like his 2016 version right out of the gate. I still quietly love his ceiling in Indy.

With that said, I do believe Ryan has many years before he’s “washed up” and I do expect the Colts to eventually sign a talented WR2 for him. I do love the image of Ryan with the Colts, JT, Pittman, their imposing defense, and another toy for 3-4 seasons together. I really believe the Colts will reap the benefits of his ability and he can be a steal in “dynasty” fantasy leagues at the moment. He might not be a Top 5 QB in 2022, but I believe he can follow Matthew Stafford by having an unusually positive future with his new squad in the back end of his career.
