It came as no surprise last week when the Denver Broncos informed Russell Wilson that he would be released. The Wilson/Sean Payton combo lasted just one season and was rocky from the start. Now the Broncos will have to eat about $85 million to make Wilson go away.

Although Wilson failed in Denver he will still be attractive to QB needy teams. Wilson was serviceable last season for the Broncos and in the right situation, he could flourish. There have been plenty of rumors since his release on potential landing spots. Let’s focus on 3 teams and breakdown why each one would be a fit.

Pittsburgh Steelers

The obvious best overall fit for Wilson would be the Steelers. Pittsburgh has strong leadership in place with Mike Tomlin at the helm and they are in need of a quarterback. Current Steelers quarterback Kenny Pickett has had his ups and downs in Pittsburgh but hasn’t really panned out. Picket seems better suited for a backup role and with Wilson on board he could learn from a vet.

When you look at the Steelers roster they have several strengths. They have young talented receivers led by George Pickens and a potential future star in the backfield in Jaylen Warren. They are always stout on defense which will be important for Wilson’s next team. In order for Wilson to thrive he will need to play more ball control on offense but there are times he takes risks. That’s why it’s important to have sold defense backing him. The Steelers will be able to provide that.

Minnesota Vikings

Another team that looks to be poised to enter the quarterback market is the Vikings. Kirk Cousins will most likely be on the move this offseason which will leave a massive hole on offense. Minnesota could plug that quickly by adding Wilson. This would also be an attractive destination for Wilson who would get to play with superstar Justin Jefferson.

The Vikings aren’t contenders yet but they have about $37 million in cap space and 9 picks in the upcoming 2024 NFL Draft. Wilson would also get to work with coach Kevin O’Connell who has proved he knows how to run an offense. If the Vikings don’t make a play for Wilson I could see them drafting a quarterback with the 11th pick.

Las Vegas Raiders

Finally, the Raiders are another potential team to watch in the Russell Wilson sweepstakes. Las Vegas will be looking to add to its quarterback room this offseason. With Antonio Pierce now the full-time coach there are several pieces already in place in Vegas.

Embed from Getty Images

The Raiders finished the 2023 strong winning 3 of their last 4. They also provide Wilson with a strong defense led by Maxx Crosby. On offense, they can provide Wilson with a star receiver in Davante Adams. They will however need to look to add to their running back room as Josh Jacobs is likely on the move.

Then there is the revenge factor. If Wilson joined the Raiders he could stay on the West Coast and more importantly, stay in the AFC West. This will allow him to face the Broncos twice a year which will be extra motivation for the jettisoned quarterback.

Regardless of where he ends up, Wilson will likely sign a contract for less than $10 million. This makes him an enticing option going forward.

Will Sean McVay be cast into Canton?

By: Brock Wells

Sean McVay is fresh off a Super Bowl win at the helm of the Los Angeles Rams and aims to have them back in the mix of championship contention again in the 2022 season. At 36, he’s an extremely young NFL head coach and was the youngest head coach in the modern history of the league when he was hired by the Rams in 2017. Some have pointed to his youth and spunk as one of the ultimate strengths of the current Rams franchise.

Sean McVay throwing a challenge flag in the fourth quarter of a preseason game.

? pic.twitter.com/Hg6aLGMbYV
— Rams Brothers (@RamsBrothers) August 20, 2022

Is the youngest head coach in NFL history to win a Super Bowl a Hall of Famer? When you consider the fact that he’s been to two Super Bowls already is his very young coaching career, it seems as though he’s surely headed in that direction. Or does this actually reflect a mere moment in time that tells us very little about what McVay’s career may turn out to be? With a career this young, it’s obvious time is the only thing that will tell.

When McVay became the youngest head coach in NFL history to win the Super Bowl, he didn’t set that mark by long. Mike Tomlin was also just 36 years old when his Pittsburgh Steelers won Super Bowl XLIII with last-second heroics over the Arizona Cardinals. Tomlin was a mere ten months older than McVay. Before Tomlin, Jon Gruden was the youngest head coach to win a Super Bowl at 39 when his Tampa Bay Buccaneers beat up the Oakland Raiders in Super Bowl XXXVII.

Let’s look at their careers respectively. McVay, Tomlin, and Gruden each won a Super Bowl in their first five seasons as a head coach.

Five-year regular season winning percentage:

McVay: .679

Tomlin: .688

Gruden: .625

#MikeTomlin Was Ready to Defend HIS QB ?? #shorts #nfl https://t.co/IOputEoVuL via @YouTube
— CMB (@BMC1901) August 16, 2022

Tomlin doing what great coaches do.

Now, just to make it clear, Gruden is not a Hall of Famer. His Tampa Bay Super Bowl team was essentially Tony Dungy’s team which he just happened to be in the right place for. On the other hand, McVay and Tomlin without question created the culture with which their respective Super Bowl teams were molded by. Tomlin, who likely is a future Hall of Famer, won his Super Bowl in just his second season at the helm.

Tomlin’s Hall of Fame credentials extend even beyond that. Like McVay, he took his team to two Super Bowls in his first five seasons as head coach. But what we don’t know yet about McVay’s career is whether he will continue to sustain a winning culture long into his career. In 15 years now as the coach of the Steelers, Tomlin’s teams have never finished a season under .500. He’s also reached the mark of 150 regular season wins.

McVay is just over a third of the way to 150 at this point, although his team features to be right in the mix for the Super Bowl contention again in 2022. If his career was finished today, it’s difficult to say he’s a Hall of Famer. It isn’t that he isn’t on the right trajectory””he certainly is””it’s just that there isn’t enough career to make a full determination yet. If the culture he’s built in Los Angeles over the last five years proves to be sustainable over the long haul, surely we’ll have a better answer.

By: Jake Rajala

The Pittsburgh Steelers (miraculously) earned a playoff ticket last season, but they will need to focus on unveiling success without their long-time quarterback Ben Roethlisberger next season. With that said, I’m going to simply outline the three biggest obstacles for PIT in 2022.

In the 2nd & 3rd quarters vs the Steelers last week, Patrick Mahomes had 5 TDs and 3 incompletions with 357 passing yards and a perfect QB Rating.

I dare you to bet against this man at home, in the playoffs. pic.twitter.com/8Gksq1Ptok
— ???? (@LanceTHESPOKEN) January 21, 2022

The ceiling of their starting QB

I actually believe that Mitchell Trubisky can throw around 25 touchdowns as the QB1 in Pittsburgh. I also believe that the potential starting QB Kenny Pickett, also known as the most pro-ready rookie QB, can make splash plays with the WR group and continue to make few turnovers (only 7 ints in his senior season).

Although, I don’t love the ceiling of either QB at this point in time. The lack of fireworks from the Steelers offense resulted in the Chiefs mopping the floor against the Steelers in the wild-card round. It will be a tall task for the new QB1 and the JuJu-less offense to upend explosive AFC teams.

The LB position

The Steelers should be able to unleash a quality pass defense without Joe Haden and I trust in the Steelers DL (T.J. Watt, Cameron Heyward) to continue to hunt down opposing signal-callers. Yet, I’m not exactly confident in Devin Bush in 2022. He hasn’t been a reliable starting LB (to say the least) and it’s unclear if Myles Jack can bounce back after being released from the Jaguars. The outlook of the Steelers LB group is quite hazy and they could really have a big swing in the success of the Steelers defense.

Devin Bush really struggles to get off blocks. #Steelers pic.twitter.com/KygZyT9Ozi
— Blitzburgh (@Blitz_Burgh) November 22, 2021

Cincinnati Bengals

The Cincinnati Bengals swept the Steelers last season and it’s clear Mike Tomlin needs to brew a superb plan to dismantle the Bengals in 2022. It would make a big difference if the Steelers could win one of their two match-ups against Cincy next season. The Bengals added La’el Collins and their offense should be overly prolific for the second straight season. The Steelers need to find a way to dissect the Bengals pass defense that isn’t even close to the same caliber as the Bengals passing offense.

Haskins entered the NFL with a very impressive CFB resume. He was the 2019 Rose Bowl MVP and he was a superb OSU QB all-around. He beat out Joe Burrow to be Ohio State’s starting QB in 2018 and he showed his ability well that season. He threw for 4,831 yards and 50 passing touchdowns in 2018-2019. There are bobbleheads of the Haskins all across the US.

RIP to Dwayne Haskins.

His talent at OSU was a big reason why he was the 15th overall pick in the 2019 NFL draft by the Washington Commanders. He was taking positive strides with Washington, but he wasn’t quite able to blossom in the nation’s capital. Mike Tomlin saw a lot of potential in his arm ability, so he gave him a shot to prove that he could be Big Ben’s successor.

He wasn’t quite able to blast off with the Steelers in year one, but his work ethic impressed Tomlin in 2021-2022. The Steelers HC made it clear that Haskins and Mason Rudolph would have opportunities to start in a Black and Yellow uniform. Mitchell Trubisky recently joined the Steelers QB conversation, as well.

Dwayne Haskins was an absolute STAR at Ohio State. pic.twitter.com/FEfVBdnNX5
— Mekka Don (@MekkaDonMusic) April 9, 2022

Haskins will be remembered as one of the best OSU players, a talented QB prospect in the league, and a very affectionate person to touch this world. Unfortunately, he was another special soul that was taken away from this verse way too soon. It’s time for the football community to give condolences to his family, Steelers nation, and Buckeye fans at this moment.

The Steelers should prioritize Kavyon Thibodeaux

By: Jake Rajala

The Pittsburgh Steelers featured the 2021 Defensive Player of The Year T.J. Watt. What if the Steelers brought in Kavyon Thibodeaux, who recently clocked a 4.65, to play next to Watt and Cameron Heyward? I believe the AFC conference that features so many prominent quarterbacks like Joe Burrow, Patrick Mahomes, Justin Herbert, and Josh Allen, would be scared at that sight.

T.J. Watt ties Michael Strahan for the most sacks in a season??

(via @NFL) pic.twitter.com/iEB7vaAec2
— SportsCenter (@SportsCenter) January 9, 2022

The draft pick of Kavyon wouldn’t only be exciting because he has an elite grade and he could play next to Watt, but the Steelers could also cut Stephon Tuitt, who carries a $13.9 million cap hit. The Steelers led the league in sacks last season, but the expensive Tuitt played a mere zero games. Kavyon would be a monster replacement for Tuitt.

I also would like to see the Steelers priorize signing a QB like Marcus Mariota or even Tyrod Taylor to compete with Mason Rudolph and Dwayne Haskins. Mariota can certainly be an upgrade over the 2021 version of Ben Roethlisberger, especially with the weapons he will have in Chase Claypool, Dionate Johnson, and Najee Harris. Tomlin has also stated that he wants an athletic QB.

The Steelers have been favored to trade up to select a QB like Sam Howell or Malik Willis. Instead, they should trade up to select a defensive player that can shake the NFL in a way that Micah Parsons did in 2021. Kavyon is a gifted DE that can chase down RBs and beat pass blockers with strength. He would have incredible matchups with Watt and Heyward on the defensive front, too. We witnessed the LA Rams win the Super Bowl largely because of Aaron Donald and Von Miller demolishing offenses side by side.

| Rumors | The Saints, Commanders, Steelers, and Panthers are expected to show interest in Raiders FA QB Marcus Mariota. #TakeCommand #WhoDatNation #HereWeGo #KeepPounding
— NFL Rumors (@nflrums) February 17, 2022

Kavyon reminds me a lot of Marcus Davenport of the New Orleans Saints. Davenport was one of the best edge rushers per snap in 2021, but injuries haunted him. Kavyon also has the rare power that Myles Garrett displays on the Browns. If Kavyon has the production of Garrett early in his career, they could unleash a defense similar to the Legion of Boom or the Von Miller-led defense in 2015.

It might be dreamy to imagine a QB like Malik Willis as the next Lamar Jackson or Russell Wilson, but it not be the best choice for the Steelers. I believe that a rookie QB will also take more time to develop at the pro level than Kavyon. The Steelers might have lost Big Ben, but that shouldn’t disguise the fact that the Steelers are built to “win now”. They can get the gold with their defense leading the charge. The Bucs defense stifled Patrick Mahomes in Super Bowl LV and the Rams lit up Joe Burrow in Super Bowl LVI.

Watt and Heyward in their prime, while their offense has many weapons content together at the moment. They should add a talented QB that can take care of the football like Mariota in free agency, while they address a “need” position by inking a profile that’s listed as the fourth best overall draft profile by Pro Football Focus and best overall prospect by CBS Sports.

What is the best landing spot for Marcus Mariota?

The Las Vegas Raiders have been fortunate to have one of the best backup quarterbacks in the NFL over the past two seasons. Marcus Mariota, who was the backup quarterback breathing down Derek Carr’s neck in each training camp, will be a free agent in 2022 and will surely have an opportunity to chase another potential starting QB gig this offseason.

Mariota has rightfully been named the most underrated free-agent QB by Pro Football Focus. The former Oregon Duck is still 28 years old and he’s accumulated 13,437 passing yards, 1,574 rushing yards, 77 passing touchdowns, and 45 interceptions, in his career. He also led the Titans to a winning record in three of his four seasons as a starter. Mariota might have lost the starting gig to Ryan Tannehill, who recently led his team to the number one seed in the AFC, but he has plenty of athletic ability and experience to earn a starting opportunity in 2022.

https://twitter.com/CFBallLegends/status/1491957075487907851?s=20&t=6xJEP3ddOyO7WGwZoJrwcA

There will be a lot of teams interested in Mariota due to his age, dual-threat ability, and positive character. The NFL witnessed Jameis Winston take a “Harvard education” with the Saints in 2020. The former Tampa Bay Buccaneers QB clearly came back sharper and more motivated with the Saints, as he led them to a 5-2 record. Mariota, who was once selected second overall in the 2015 draft, could follow in a similar path as Winston, who was picked first overall in the 2015 draft.

It’s widely enunciated that the former Heisman winner will have a golden opportunity to lead a team in 2022. The question is: which team will the Hawaii native lead? Well, here are likely destinations for Mariota.

Pittsburgh Steelers

The Pittsburgh Steelers are going to look to add a QB this offseason to compete with Mason Rudolph and Dwayne Haskins. Mike Tomlin has stated that he wants an elusive QB to join his squad. Mariota could be the dual-threat QB that Tomlin adheres to.

I also expect free agent Jameis Winston to re-sign with the New Orleans Saints and Tomlin to prefer Mariota over the likes of Mitchell Trubisky, Jacoby Brissett, and Andy Dalton. Mariota has to be fascinated by the combination of talent in Pittsburgh and the opportunity to yield the ability. It wouldn’t be long until Mariota seeks revenge on his old Titans squad in a pivotal matchup if he suited up in a black and yellow uniform.

The T.J.

Washington Commanders

Mariota has a good opportunity to earn the keys to the Washington offense and outduel Taylor Heinicke and a potential rookie for the starting gig. Heinicke recorded 20 passing touchdowns, but he also threw porous 15 interceptions. It’s clear that Washington is looking to add a QB who can push Heinicke for the starting gig this offseason.

Mariota could be thrilled about the idea of playing with Terry McLaurin, who notched 77 receptions, 1,053 yards, and five touchdowns with a mediocre QB situation last season. Washington also has Antonio Gibson (1,037 rushing yards, 7 rushing touchdowns) and Curtis Samuel to help him. Washington isn’t the same caliber of team as the Steelers, but they could aim to outbid the Steelers for his services.

GO, GIBSON, GO.

Antonio Gibson goes for a 73-yard TD! #WashingtonFootball

?: #WASvsBUF on FOX
?: NFL app pic.twitter.com/eB6NShoVY2
— NFL (@NFL) September 26, 2021

San Francisco 49ers

The San Francisco 49ers will insert Trey Lance into the driver’s seat, but Lance is still an unproven commodity. It would be wise for Kyle Shanahan to add a quality backup QB, particularly a QB that has a similar skillet to Lance.

Shanny wouldn’t have to alter the scheme significantly if Mariota filled in for Lance (vice versa). Both QBs can run the read-option, QB draw, and make throw it well on the run. It’s well noted how both QBs can burn LBs in the open field, as both QBs can run the 40 yard dash in the 4.5s. Shanny was in love with Andy Dalton the last offseason and that’s a route that he could go, but he could be more interested in the younger, more explosive Mariota. The former Titans QB could be intrigued about the culture and opportunity in the Bay area, but he will have to accept that Lance will be harder to beat out than Mason Rudolph and Taylor Heinicke.

Trey Lance missile pic.twitter.com/dEmOdpNF9f
— Computer Cowboy (@benbbaldwin) January 5, 2022

Houston Texans

The Houston Texans reeled in Tyrod Taylor as a free agent QB in 2021 and they could tempt Mariota to join them in 2022. Their 2021 rookie David Fales was exceptional for the Texans, especially given his situation. The Texans shipped away their best RB in Mark Ingram early in the season and they struggled to have playmakers outside of Brandin Cooks.

Still, the Texans could bring in a playmaker to join Cooks and then show Mariota a convincing offer. I wouldn’t expect Mariota to be filled of joy with the thought of joining the Texans, but they could offer add more talent and show him the money! They have roughly $18 million, according to “Over the Cap”, so they could afford to risk a big offer to him. Texans fans will have to hope he’s not the next “Brock Osweiler”.

Signing Brock Osweiler probably ruined the Texans chances of signing Tony Romo pic.twitter.com/NkePDO0YRm
— Herd w/Colin Cowherd (@TheHerd) March 9, 2017

Denver Broncos

The Denver Broncos have the inspirational Teddy Bridgewater, but he is a free agent in 2022. It’s far from certain if he will return in 2022. Bridgewater went 7-7 and nicely utilized Jerry Jeudy. Yet, the future is murky with Teddy B. He has never played a full season in the NFL and his ceiling isn’t scary. Bridgewater can take care of the football and be efficient, but the one-time Pro Bowler has never thrown more than 20 touchdowns in a season. He’s not going to go blow for blow with QBs like Josh Allen, Patrick Mahomes, and Joe Burrow.

The Broncos will really have to play sound football in a division with Patrick Mahomes if they expect to be a championship team with Bridgewater. They could be more enticed about the idea of Mariota and a rookie battling it out (I’m also assuming Drew Lock is traded). There is an option c for the Broncos, which is the Aaron Rodgers (and Davante Adams?) trade. The Broncos have an elite Von Miller-less defense, but they have one of the most mysterious QB outlooks in 2022.

Several teams – inc the #Broncos – have been reaching out to the #Packers about Aaron Rodgers. The issue? Green Bay has shown zero interest. With the Tom Clements hire, there’s a growing internal belief in GB that the two-time reigning MVP will remain a Packer.
— Jordan Schultz (@Schultz_Report) February 18, 2022

Honorable mention:

New York Jets

The New York Jets may not seem like a fun short-term fit in Mariota’s mind, but they could be a logical fit for a few reasons. The Jets really need a QB, as they desperately acquired the washed-up, former Jets QB in 2021. Zach Wilson has high expectations, but he hasn’t proven to be consistent at the pro level and there’s reason to say he has minor injury concerns, too. The Jets pass protection needs to be upgraded, so they may have more trust in a veteran running the offense in the near future. Wilson was sacked a whopping 44 times in 13 games last season.

https://twitter.com/BabyyRodgers/status/1491968095585542147?s=20&t=-_VM-WMitw9IopX2rkdc5g

The Jets have the fourth most cap space in the league and they could display a lucrative deal that Mariota may not want to pass up. Similar to the Texans, the Jets could bring in a stud weapon early on, so Mariota is more fascinated about playing in the Big Apple. The former Titans QB would have his work cut out in the AFC East with Josh Allen, Mac “giddy” Jones, and Tua Tagovailoa, but I don’t expect Mariota to shy away from the big lights.

Sean Payton has a big opportunity on Monday Night Football

The Saints head coach Sean Payton has gone 19-4 with Teddy Bridgewater, Jameis Winston, and Taysom Hill in the past three seasons. In comparison, the legendary Bill Belichick has gone 16-15 without Tom Brady in the past two years. I’m not saying that Payton deserves to be ranked ahead of the six-time Super Bowl champion Bill Belichick, but Payton clearly deserves more respect for the production he’s managed to pull off without his alter ego in Hall of Fame QB Drew Brees.

It’s very impressive that Payton doesn’t need an elite QB in the building, but he can actually uplift a QB and offense’s ability with his own creative genius. The Saints QB whisperer turned Taysom Hill into a reliable QB2 and swiss army knife, Jameis Winston from the worst QB in the league to a Top 12 signal-caller, and he managed to rip off five straight victories with the game manager Teddy B when the Rams all-time great defensive tackle Aaron Donald broke Drew Brees’s thumb.

Teddy Bridgewater since taking over for an injured Drew Brees:

? 5-0 W-L
? 9-2 TD/Int ratio
? 1,205 pass yds pic.twitter.com/ocMSzNoK7B
— ESPN (@espn) October 20, 2019

In 2021, Payton has missed Jameis Winston for much of the season, Michael Thomas for the entire season coaches via COVID, multiple defenders injured (Davenport, Ceedy Duce, Kwon Alexander), but he’s fought hard and led his team to a 7-7 record. The Saints did have a rough streak with Trevor Siemian, where they lost games to the Titans, Bills, Cowboys, Eagles, and Falcons (all potential playoff teams). Still, Payton deserves a lot of credit for their monster victories and ability to be in the position they now sit.

The Saints were displaced in Week 1 and had to play a home game in Jacksonville against the Green Bay Packers. Yet, the Saints blew the brakes of the Packers and came away with a 38-3 victory. On Halloween against the Bucs, Winston went down with a brutal season-ending injury. Nonetheless, the Saints pulled up an incredible upset victory with Siemian playing for three of the quarters. Payton also led his team to monster victories against the New England Patriots and Seattle Seahawks (both on the road).

Payton’s scrappy team would of course win their biggest game of the year in Week 15 when the head coach himself was out of the building with COVID. Dennis Allen’s defense would shut down Tom Brady with a 9-0 victory in the Saints “Super Bowl” like matchup. Now the Saints find themselves sitting at 7-7, the playoffs on the line, and the biggest challenge of the season to date.

With this sack, Cameron Jordan now has over 100 in his #NFL career!

?: NBC and @peacockTV pic.twitter.com/DMZg1gmdkA
— Sunday Night Football on NBC (@SNFonNBC) December 20, 2021

The Ian Book-led Saints offensive attack has to face off against the Miami Dolphins team that won an improbable six games straight after starting the season 1-7. The hottest team in football faces a Saints an already decimated team that will now be missing Taysom Hill, Trevor Siemian, Demario Davis, Ryan Ramczyk, Kwon Alexander, and Malcolm Jenkins via COVID. Still, If the dome can start rocking and the Saints can sneak away with a victory, the Saints will have a very realistic chance of conquering their pain and making the playoffs. Payton won’t get a coach of the year award if the team wins out, but this will be one of the most impressive, unique seasons of his legacy.

I do believe that if Payton can march his Book/Hill-led team to the playoffs, his coaching rank should be closer to the cream of the crop. I’d say he and Mike Tomlin are interchangeable because of Tomlin’s Super Bowl count, but that should change if Payton can overcome his 2021 circumstances in the Brees-less era. He should surely be ahead of Tomlin, who has routinely seen the glass crumble below his feet without Big Ben. If Payton can bring his team to the playoffs with his circumstances, the combination of Payton’s offensive production, one Super Bowl ring, and current grittiness should place him ahead of Tomlin (even if he has two SB rings). Tomlin has enjoyed high-end success, but he’s been more on a roller coaster ride than Payton has over the past several years.

We have exclusive video of Mike Tomlin at halftime pic.twitter.com/bPh7cTRImU
— DraftKings Sportsbook (@DKSportsbook) December 26, 2021

I believe that Payton is ahead of Andy Reid at this moment because of the juggernaut offense he’s yielded for years and the talent he showed without number 9 in the huddle. Payton has broken countless records with Brees throughout the years. Don’t let the Patrick Mahomes/Tyreek Hill/ Travis Kelce show fool you from forgetting how many 5,000 yard seasons Brees and company registered. The Saints head coach has also been nearly as efficient with a QB not named Drew as Reid was with Alex Smith in Kansas City. It may be easy to have a bias by recognizing the Chiefs potential and automatically assuming number 15 will win a second Super Bowl soon and the team is a true dynasty squad in the AFC. But, let’s not get ahead of ourselves just yet. We saw the Seahawks take a 180-degree turn with Caroll and Russell Wilson. Even the Saints didn’t reach their full potential with Brees and Payton in the postseason. All in all, Payton appears to be the second most impressive coach at this moment.

Payton, also known as Kevin James, will have a lot of work to do to catch the best mind in the league: Bill Belichick. But, Payton does have youth on his side. The Saints HC is a whopping 12 years younger than Belichick. If the Saints can find a franchise QB with the insanely talented roster they have around the QB position, the slightly underappreciated leader of the Saints may be able to acquire a couple more Lombardi trophies. Perhaps the Saints have their future with the hidden gem in Ian Book? We will soon find out.

Steelers Mike Tomlin deserved the extension

By: Dave Stewart

To say the Pittsburgh Steelers’ 2020 NFL season was tumultuous would be an understatement. Their undefeated streak of 11 games was the best start to a season in franchise history. They concluded the season by losing five of their final six matchups, including an embarrassing playoff ouster at the hands of their rivals, the Cleveland Browns. It was not exactly a rollercoaster season because it was not full of ups and downs, only up until they fell off a cliff.

With the season-ending so abruptly, many speculated that head coach, Mike Tomlin, may be on the block or, at the very least, on thin ice heading into the final year of his contract. The Steelers quieted those murmurings by signing Tomlin to a multi-year extension on Tuesday.

Tomlin began his career in Pittsburgh with a bang in 2007, hired as the 16th coach in Steeler history after serving only a single year as defensive coordinator for the Minnesota Vikings. In his second year as Pittsburgh’s top man, he coached his team to a Super Bowl victory, and at age 36, became the youngest coach to do so. He was awarded Coach of the Year honors for the 2008 campaign.

Longest tenured active head coaches…

Bill Belichick – 2000
Sean Payton – 2006
Mike Tomlin – 2007
John Harbaugh – 2008
Pete Carroll – 2010
Andy Reid – 2013
Mike Zimmer – 2014
— NFL Stats (@NFL_Stats) April 9, 2021

Two years later, he was back in the Super Bowl suffering a narrow defeat at the hands of the Green Bay Packers. In total, Tomlin has led his team to seven AFC North division titles and three AFC Championship appearances, winning twice. He has not had a losing season in his 14 years as a head coach, a feat equaled by only the late Marty Schottenheimer.

In 2019, with the pairing of Mason Rudolph and Devlin Hodges at quarterback, Tomlin navigated the squad to an 8-8 record, prompting calls for his consideration for Coach of the Year. Those calls were renewed during his 11-0 start to the 2020 season, prior to collapsing down the stretch.

With an extension in place, Tomlin has at least four years remaining at the helm. So, what does this extension mean? Well, most significantly, it means Tomlin is going to get a chance with the next quarterback following Ben Roethlisberger. While in place to start the 2021 season, anything beyond remains up in the air for the 39-year-old signal-caller. Even by generous estimations, playing beyond 2022 seems improbable. Extended through 2024, Tomlin’s fortune will not be tied to that of Roethlisberger.

Separating the coach from the future Hall of Fame quarterback will give Tomlin the opportunity to sink or swim with the successor to Roethlisberger. The moves the Steelers have made in free agency indicate that the team is expecting some minor roster retooling to allow them to remain a Super Bowl contender in 2021. Re-signing players like JuJu Smith-Schuster and Vince Williams, who were expected to leave, show the desire to retain as much roster consistency as possible. Doing so, coupled with filling holes in the upcoming draft, are clear indicators that the team brass expect to see no drop-off in competition.

The pressure is on Tomlin to deliver another Super Bowl or, at least come close, in order to reach a further extension with the club. Basically, the additional three years put Tomlin on a “prove it” deal. While he has never had a losing season, he has gone 8-8 on three separate occasions. The Steelers have lost their last three playoff games and have only appeared in the playoffs twice in the last four years, results that fall well short of the expectations in Pittsburgh.

Assuming that the Steelers are successful in identifying an adequate replacement for Roethlisberger when the time comes, which is quite an assumption in itself, Tomlin must deliver a perennial championship contender. Doing so with allow him to write his own legacy as one the game’s great coaches. Failing that, he may find himself in a different locale by the time the 2025 season kicks off.
