The NFL’s second season starts tomorrow with some excellent matchups to look forward to. Wild Card weekend never disappoints and you can expect some surprising upsets before it’s all said and done. Before the games kick off let’s take a look at three storylines we can’t wait to see play out.

Is Jalen Hurts Healthy?

Hurts has missed the last two games for the Eagles after he suffered a concussion in the game against the Commanders. The good news for Philadelphia is that Hurts is practicing this week and is set to make his return. But is he 100%?

Concussions are always tricky to navigate and Hurts’ was significant enough that he missed the last 3 weeks. He is also dealing with a broken finger in his non-throwing hand. His health has to be a concern considering how much he likes to run. There is also the fact that quarterbacks in their first game back from concussions often struggle.

How Will the Rookie QB’s Fare

Wild Card weekend will feature two rookie quarterbacks making their playoff debuts. Jayden Daniels and Bo Nix have impressed in their 1st year helping to lead their teams to huge turnarounds. Both are road underdogs with Nix having the daunting task of trying to upset the Bills in Buffalo.

Daniels will look for revenge when the Commanders head to Tampa Bay on Sunday night. Washington played the Bucs in Week 1 and that game was mostly dominated by Tampa. The Commanders are a much different team now and I expect Daniels to shine in this one. He seems to play his best when the lights are the brightest.

Are the Steelers One and Done?

Pittsburgh has lost 4 straight games and their once promising offense has faded. Russell Wilson hasn’t looked the same the past month and the Steelers are in danger of a complete collapse. Up next, they head to Baltimore in hopes of knocking off their rival but it will be a tall task if their offense doesn’t get into gear.

The Steelers amassed just 193 total yards last Saturday against a weak Bengals defense. If Pittsburgh has any chance of pulling the upset they need to get George Pickens going again. Pickens had 0 yards on 6 targets last week and hasn’t broken 100 receiving yards since October. If the Steelers lose again will Mike Tomlin’s job be in jeopardy?

This weekends games should be very competitive, as four high powered teams go at it. There are so many story lines this weekend to include, Patrick Mahomes ankle. Will Joe Burrow continue his dominant QB play? How will Mr Irrelevant (Brock Purdy) perform in Philly where the crowd will be hostile? Can San Francisco’s defense stop the Eagles electric offense? One thing I’ve learned analyzing the NFL, is that whatever happened last week doesn’t really dictate what will happen this week. Let’s breakdown each game, and see who I believe will win.

Cincinnati Bengals at Kansas City Chiefs

After last Sunday’s game it looked like Mahomes’s ankle was not good at all. He was limping and even dropping back to hand off the ball was difficult. To many people’s surprise he practiced yesterday and appears fine to play on Sunday. We shall see though as one weird hit and he could be limping again. On the Bengals side of the ball, they are healthy and clicking on all cylinders. Surprisingly, their defense has stepped up and has made the Bengals a tough team to beat. If I’m the Bengals, I make Mahomes scramble as much as he can through blitzes and other stunts. Also, I would jam Travis Kelce at the line and try to be as physical as I can. The problem is I still believe he balls out, so the Bengals might have to chalk it up on having a big impact. In addition to stopping Kelce they will have to contain Isiah Pacheco, the Chiefs speedy running back. Basically, they have to make Mahomes’s life miserable by knocking him down and forcing him into bad throws. I’m not too worried about the Bengals offense as they have been dominant for much of the season. The Chiefs need to rattle Burrow and force him into bad throws. Also, try to contain Joe Mixon who can break one for a touchdown at any time. The Chiefs want revenge in this game as they were so close to moving on last year to the Superbowl. There has been reports that there calling Arrowhead, “Burrowhead” which only motivates the Chiefs to prove them wrong. This game will be close and will probably require a last minute field goal to win it. Because of how evenly matched they are, but coaching and playing at home KC has the edge, I like the Chiefs by 3 in this one.

Chiefs 31 Bengals 28

San Francisco 49ers at Philadelphia Eagles

Philly looked unstoppable last weekend as they dominated the New York Football Giants. But as I said in my comment above it’s hard to go off what happened last week as the Eagles could lay an egg this week against the tough 49ers. With that said, I don’t think that will happen, and I have Philly winning by 7 in this game. They have talent all over the field, they’re playing at home, and they have the more dynamic quarterback in Jalen Hurts. SF will have a plan to slow down the Eagles offense by stopping the run game and not allowing Hurts to run the read option. Their best chance is to force Hurts to be a pocket passer. For SF on offense, play smart Football, put Purdy in situations where he will succeed. They need Christian McCaffrey to play well, but the problem is, the Eagles know that. If I’m Philly I force Purdy to beat me with his arm, which will be a very tough challenge. I believe Purdy throws an INT in this game as well as fumbling the ball and giving the ball back to Philly. That crowd will be raucous, Philly has an exceptional pass rush, just too much for San Francisco!

Eagles 28 49ers 21

Last weeks record 2-2

The Championship round is upon us. Will the home teams win? Will Patrick Mahomes be healthy enough to be effective? These are some of the questions I will be asking entering championship Sunday. See the breakdown below on how each team can move on.

How the Chiefs can Win

Arrowhead is an awfully tough place to play. It is loud and KC is at its best at home. The Chiefs need to continue to feed Travis Kelce the ball, but I think the key in this game will be the running game of the Chiefs, especially when Mahomes is not 100%. Andy Reid will need to be creative in his game plan knowing that Mahomes won’t be his true self. On defense, get to Joe Burrow and force him into mistakes. The Chiefs have a formidable pass rush led by Chris Jones who will need to have a standout game. This may be a game where the last person with the ball wins. Get ready for a classic!

How the Eagles can Win

The Eagles are also tough to beat at home and Philadelphia will be rocking! Philly has more talent than the 49ers on both sides of the ball. The key to this game will also be the running game with Miles Sanders along with Jalen Hurt’s ability to run the read option. Philly wins if they do this along with making Brock Purdy’s life a living hell. They need to rattle him early and often and hopefully getting a pick where he starts thinking.

How the Bengals can win

The Bengals have had the Chiefs number in the last few games. With Mahomes not at 100% they have a very real chance to win this game. The Bengals defense needs to rattle Mahomes and force him to escape the pocket where he will not be as effective. Also they need to watch tape on how to stop Kelce. This is usually done by being physical at the line and disrupting his route. Joe Burrow and his ability to use all of his weapons will be key. He will need to sprinkle in some Joe Mixon and Hayden Hurst, but it’s his play that will carry the Bengals to a win.

How the 49ers can win

The 49ers are extremely well coached. They have a top notch defense that is playing at a really high level. They have a third string quarterback that outplayed a 20 million dollar quarterback in Dallas. For them to win it’s the defense that will make that happen. I don’t think they will put up more than 24 in this game which means the D will need to keep Philly under 24. That will be a tall task but an attainable one. On offense, they need to keep Philly’s d off balance and keep them guessing. Of course Christian McCaffrey will need a great game.

The NFC and AFC championships are now set with exciting matchups ahead. Before we look forward to the weekend let’s take a look back at the divisional round and how it played out.

1. True Leader – What an effort from Patrick Mahomes after spraining his ankle. He is a true warrior and a fighter, and his will to win is like no other. Jacksonville put up a big fight and should be proud of themselves for their effort. The Chiefs even without Tyreek Hill are very dangerous and can beat you in many ways. Even when Mahomes is limited he has several weapons he can use. Mahomes is not 100% and won’t be for the game on Sunday but we do know that Chad Henne is a very viable backup. He led the Chiefs on a 98 yard drive to score a TD.

2. Philly Special – Philly is special and to think the Giants had a chance in this game. I learned that Philly is going to be awfully tough to beat in their stadium. Even an extremely talented 49ers team might have a challenge. On the first play of the game, Jalen Hurts threw the ball on a rope to DeVonta Smith. From there on out it was total domination. That stadium will be packed on Sunday and I believe it will give Brock Purdy problems and he will get rattled. Eagles all the way in that game.

3. Burrow Pride – Joe Burrow might be the most talented QB left of the four teams. Yes I am putting him above Mahomes. His pocket presence is impressive and he seems to be getting better each game. Against a talented Chiefs team this is sure to be a classic. Joe Burrow will have to play like he did last game for them to have a chance.

4. Dak to Dallas – Dak needed to be the man in this game and he fell way short. He threw 2 INT’s and got out played by a third string quarterback. Granted SF’s defense is top in the league but Dak wasn’t the answer. For as much as he’s getting paid, he should be putting up 3-5 TD’s a game. We keep waiting for Purdy to choke and play bad and it just hasn’t happened yet. His toughest test will be this week in Philly. The Philly pass rush is for real and he will have a hard time hearing anything. I believe this is the week where we see why he was picked last in the draft.

Super Wild Card weekend certainly did not disappoint. We had an improbable Jaguars comeback and the Ravens/Dolphins keeping it much closer than many expected. The Divisional round is next up with some juicy matchups on tap. Let’s take a closer look at the games and our expert picks.

Jacksonville Jaguars at Kansas City Chiefs (-9)

I for one did not pick the Jaguars to win last week. And for the most part I was almost right seeing that they were down 27-0. But the Jaguars led by Doug Pederson found a way to win in front of their home crowd. The Jaguars are playing with house money in this game but I think the Chiefs at home, led by Patrick Mahomes will be too much for the surging Jaguars. This game may be close for awhile before the Chiefs step on the gas peddle. For the Jaguars, a very successful season with their bright young stars

Chiefs 37 Jaguars 21

New York Giants at Philadelphia Eagles (-7.5)

I really want to pick the Giants in this one, they have all the momentum and they are also playing with house money. Jalen Hurts isn’t 100% and the Eagles are not riding tons of momentum. Giants would need a few turnovers on defense to win this game, but I don’t think they do. This game will be close but the Eagles at home with a great regular season will find a way to win. For the Eagles it’s simple, stop Barkley and force Daniel Jones to step back and pass against a undermanned receiver corps. On offense, the Eagles need to do what they’ve done all year. Miles Sanders and AJ Brown will have big games in this one.

Eagles 28 Giants 23

Cincinnati Bengals at Buffalo Bills (-5.5)

The Bills are riding a high right now of adversity, playing good football and playing at home. The Ravens easily could’ve beat the Bengals last week if it wasn’t for some timely errors. Playing in Buffalo is not easy, and Cincinnati will keep it close but I got the Bills by 10 in this one. Look for Josh Allen to throw 4 TD’s in the game.

Bills 34 Bengals 28

Dallas Cowboys at San Francisco 49ers (-4)

Can Brock Purdy win again? There’s no reason to believe he can’t, Kyle Shanahan calls the perfect game for him to succeed. Their defense is unstoppable, and they have multiple weapons on offense. Dallas got over the hump last week and won a playoff game led by Dak Prescott. I know the 49ers is the team to beat, there playing at home, and Dallas is on a short week. I believe Dallas finds a way to win on a last second field goal by Brett Maher. Yes Brett Maher, the guy that missed 4 extra points, will kick a field goal with no time on the clock to give the Cowboys an upset win. Dallas when playing well can be very tough to beat. Let’s not forget about Micah Parsons in this game. He will wreck havoc on the San Fran offensive line, and Brock Purdy. Let’s also not forget Purdy has been playing amazing, but he’s still a rookie. Does the pressure get to him in a tough test? We shall see!

Cowboys 27 49ers 24

Last Week’s Record 4-2

It would not be the first time the New York Giants shock the league if they beat the Philadelphia Eagles on Saturday.

They shocked everyone when they beat the New England Patriots to Super Bowl 42 and 46, the latter being the last time they had won a playoff game until their win over the Minnesota Vikings last weekend.

Facing the number one seed is never easy, but the Giants will go into this game confident they can cause an upset.

Can they do it again?

Taking Their Chances

If the Giants are to advance, they have to capitalize and make the most of any opponent flaws.

Philadelphia’s quarterback Jalen Hurts and offensive lineman Lane Johnson have been injury doubts and will likely go into this game not 100% healthy.

This is where the Giants can capitalize, between the trenches. With a defensive line featuring studs such as Dexter Lawrence, Leonard Williams, Jaylon Smith, and Kayvon Thibodeaux, they can get to the Eagles.

This is not going to be a pretty win, and the Giants are likely going to have to grind out a hard-fought win, but if they can win this battle between the trenches, then they have every chance. If they do this, they will need their offense to also perform lights out.

Is Daniel Jones Eli 2.0?

This was one of the feel-good stories of Wildcard Weekend.

Jones became the first quarterback in playoff history to throw for 300+ passing yards and have over 75 rushing yards during their 31-24 win over Minnesota.

Eli Manning was another player, and like Jones, he was never elite in the regular season. However, in the postseason, he turned into a different animal.

Who can forget his pass to David Tyree in Super Bowl 42 and catch to Mario Manningham in Super Bowl 46. These are not exactly elite receivers who helped these plays happen. Manningham never had a season with 1,000 yards receiving and only once did he catch more than five touchdowns in a regular season. He only had 51 receptions and one touchdown in the two seasons that followed Super Bowl 46 before retiring. Tyree never had more than 211 yards in any regular season and had four touchdowns all throughout his career. He had just four receptions from eight targets and one touchdown in their Super Bowl winning postseason run in the 2007 season. There is a sense of familiarity with the current players Jones has around him. Barkley is the one exception, an elite running back, a contender for Comeback Player of the Year and someone with three 1,000-yard seasons in his five years in the league. Wide receiver Isaiah Hodgins and rookie tight end Daniel Bellinger both scored in Sunday’s win. Bellinger only had 268 yards in 12 games this season and Hodgins has just 392 career yards in three seasons. Darius Slayton also came up big despite never having a season with more than 800 yards. His 88 yards went a long way to helping the Giants win this game. In Barkley, Bellinger, and Hodgins, these are three weapons that will be a big help to Jones if they are to beat the Eagles. If They Were To Win… A road game against either the San Francisco 49ers or Dallas Cowboys would follow should Brian Daboll’s men advance. Whilst they would once again be underdogs, they will fill confident after beating Philadelphia. As great as Brock Purdy has been, the rookie QB has yet to be tested at the highest level, with a favourable regular season schedule and a game against the seventh seed Seattle Seahawks. Purdy looked nervous at times in the Wildcard Round. Earlier, there was discussion about quarterbacks such as Nick Foles and Eli Manning who turn it on in the postseason. Other quarterbacks such as Kyler Murray (2021 season) and Jared Goff (Super Bowl 53) proved to be the other way around. If Purdy struggles, whilst there is an argument that their defense could bail them out. With an offense that scored 31 points on Sunday, there is no guarantee that this 49ers defense will automatically be the same as they have been all season. If they are to face the Cowboys, this is a Cowboys team that has perennially struggled since their 1995 success. They have choked in recent seasons when it matters, and despite his brilliant performance against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers on Monday Night Football, Dak Prescott has yet to deliver when it really counts. It is a longshot that the Giants win one game, let along two or three more, but there have been crazier playoff moments. This is why NFL fans love the playoffs. Anything can happen.">Manningham never had a season with 1,000 yards receiving and only once did he catch more than five touchdowns in a regular season.
What an action packed weekend of Super Wild Card games! As expected the better teams won and in some games it came down to the wire. Let’s analyze each one and where the winning team goes from here.

Seahawks at 49ers – 49ers teased the Seahawks in this first half by thinking they had a chance, but the 49ers are far more superior. They have so many different weapons that can hurt you on offense, and on defense they can stop anybody. They are playing at a very high level right now. In this game we learned that Brock Purdy is for real and there’s no reason to believe he’s going to slow down anytime soon. Next up for them a date with the Cowboys.

Chargers at Jaguars – Its never over until it’s over. When the Jaguars were down 27-0 I still think they believed they could win. They’ve been scrappy all year and give all the credit to Doug Pederson and what he’s done with Trevor Lawrence. Unfortunately, their luck will end this weekend against the high powered Chiefs.

Embed from Getty Images

Miami at Buffalo – Miami played Buffalo a little tougher than the Bills thought. Skylar Thompson looked impressive, but it just wasn’t enough to win. This is Buffalo’s year and playing the AFC championship in Atlanta, favors them. They don’t have to go to KC assuming they win.

Giants at Vikings – Contrary to what the haters say, the Giants are for real. This is a reflection of their coach and what he has done with this team. Daniel Jones is playing at a high-level and the defense is formidable. What I took away from this game is that their going to give the Eagles a tough time this weekend. With a 100% healthy Jalen Hurts I don’t have too much confidence but with him being at let’s say 80% I think the Giants have a chance in that game. They will have to get a few turnovers on the defensive side of the ball and convert those into TD’s.

Ravens at Bengals – Most analysts picked the Bengals to win this one but you can never count out the Ravens with their tough D led by Roquan Smith. In the end it just wasn’t enough after Huntley made a costly fumble at the Bengals 1 yard line. The Bengals will be preparing for a shootout this weekend against the Bills where they will have to bring their A game. The Bengals are a good team but unfortunately there’s two other slightly better teams in this conference.

Cowboys at Bucs – After last week’s performance against the Commanders the Cowboys were due for a dominating game. Dak had 5 TD’s and their defense stepped up when they had to led by Micah Parsons. The Cowboys have had disappointing past performances over the last 30 years but this years team is legit. This week’s game against the 49ers will be a huge test for them and if they can overcome that, they have all the momentum rolling into the Super Bowl. Let’s not sleep on them this week!

Wild Card weekend is officially upon us. While the games have some clear favorites there is always going to be surprises that catch us off guard. Let’s take a closer look at the matchups and reveal our expert picks.

Seattle Seahawks at 49ers (-10)

Can Brock Purdy keep up his improbable consistent play at QB when it counts? That remains to be seen, and so far there is no reason why he can’t keep performing at a high level. Seattle is very well coached and have talent, but it’s going to be tough for them to win this one. They would need a couple turnovers on defense and somehow “contain” Christian McCaffrey. I’ll take the 49ers on this one as they continue to roll.

49ers 28 Seattle 13

Los Angeles Chargers (-1.5) at Jacksonville Jaguars

Both teams have eerily similar QB’s when you look at stats and their physical features. Jacksonville is on a roll but the Chargers are a good team. They will have a good plan in this one to keep Trevor Lawrence at bay. My heart says Jacksonville in this one, but I think the Chargers win on a last second field goal

Chargers 27 Jaguars 24

Miami Dolphins at Buffalo Bills (-13.5)

Doesn’t it seem like this is Buffalo’s year no matter what? They have talent, the whole Damar Hamlin story. Miami is playing their 3rd string QB in Skylar Thompson. They will need to come up with a plan to get the ball to their good receivers, but it won’t be enough.

Buffalo 34 Miami 17

New York Giants at Minnesota Vikings (-3)

Minnesota is the biggest fraud in this playoff group. They either win by 3 or lose by 30. I don’t trust Kirk Cousins in the playoffs and with the weapons he has there is no reason they should lose this game. I just wonder if the Giants can generate enough offense to compete with Minnesota.

Minnesota 24 Giants 21

Baltimore Ravens at Cincinnati Bengals (-9.5)

No Lamar against the streaking Bengals. The Ravens should put up a good test with their tough defense but it won’t be enough. I question the Ravens secondary and stopping all the Bengals receivers.

Bengals 30 Ravens 21

Dallas Cowboys (-2.5) at Tampa Bay Buccaneers

Dallas is coming off a horrendous lost to the Commanders where there was no effort at all. That might of been a good thing for them, and they might wake up this week against the average Bucs. I know Tom Brady is undefeated against the Cowboys, but they will lose this week against Dallas. Dallas will get back to their high powered offensive ways and win by 10.

Dallas 34 Bucs 24

Last week’s record 14-2

Week 18 of the NFL season is almost here and it is shaping to be one full of excitement and competitive football. Week 18 will put some teams into playoff mode and others into draft mode. After Week 16, there are five playoff spots up for grabs, two in the AFC and three in the NFC. Only four teams have clinched their division: Bills, Chiefs, Vikings, and the 49ers. With only two more games remaining, several divisional titles are coming down to the wire including the AFC North and AFC South. Unlike the rest of the NFL season, the Week 18 game time schedule has not been released and probably won’t be until this weekend. The NFL will want to put key playoff implicating games in national primetime slots with two Saturday games and Sunday Night Football. Until the NFL releases the Week 18 game time schedule, let’s predict not only when the games will be played but who is likely to win those games.

Most Likely 1pm Games

Vikings @ Bears (WINNER: Vikings)

The Bears might have Justin Fields but they also have only three wins. The Vikings should win this easily.

Texans @ Colts (WINNER: Texans)

Both teams are out of the AFC South race and two of the worst teams in the league. While this game should be competitive, the Texans have the momentum to win this game.

Chargers @ Broncos (WINNER: Chargers)

The Broncos’ ride this season has been very rough this season and it will end with the Chargers electrocuting the ride.

Cardinals @ 49ers (WINNER: 49ers)

The Cardinals came into this season as a team poised for the playoffs. Now they are team poised for the draft. 49ers will win this game with another stellar Brock Prudy performance.

Rams @ Seahawks (WINNER: Seahawks)

Can’t believe that the reigning Super Bowl champions are out of the playoff hunt already. Baker Mayfield should be a wildcard to this matchup so it will be close, but the Seahawks will want to win to potentially sneak into the playoffs.

Chiefs @ Raiders (WINNER: Chiefs)

This AFC West matchup would have been compelling had the Raiders not been a team prone to collapsing in games. The Chiefs are going to win this game and try to clinch the AFC bye.

Most Likely 4pm Games

Patriots @ Bills (WINNER: Bills)

While this game might not seem compelling at first glance due to the team’s records, this game will mean a lot to both teams. The Patriots will try and clinch the last spot in the AFC playoffs while the Bills will try and clinch the AFC bye. It will be a fun game to watch.

Lions @ Packers (WINNER: Lions)

Week 17 will determine how important of a game this will be but this game will be against two teams trying to desperately make the playoffs and salvage their mediocre seasons. However, the Lions are trending upwards and should give Aaron Rodgers a chance to spend some time with his family this winter.

Cowboys @ Commanders (WINNER: Cowboys)

The Cowboys will be looking to end the regular season strong against a Washington team that will be trying to secure a wildcard spot. The Cowboys should win this game, but Dak is prone to throwing the game away so this will be a good game nonetheless.

Most Likely Saturday Night Game

Titans @ Jaguars (WINNER: Jaguars)

Not only is this a heated AFC South rivalry, this game will decide who will win the AFC South. This should be an intense game but the Jaguars are red hot and will clinch their second ever AFC South title, first since 2017.

Most Likely Sunday Night Game

Ravens @ Bengals (WINNER: Bengals)

No matter if Lamar Jackson plays or not, this game will be a heated AFC North battle. Both teams are going to be fighting for the divisional title and a chance to host a playoff game. The Bengals will most likely win this game, especially if Lamar Jackson is not playing.

Possible 1pm or 4pm Games

Buccaneers @ Falcons (WINNER: Buccaneers)

The NFC South could be still undecided in this game and this would be a chance for Tom Brady to clinch the playoffs after an abysmal season. The Buccaneers should win this game but the Falcons will try to make it close.

Browns @ Steelers (WINNER: Steelers)

Mike Tomlin has never had a losing season in his career, but this game could decide if he does. It could also decide whether or not the Steelers could sneak into the playoffs. It’s a longshot, but the Steelers should win and look to the results of other games in the AFC to see if they are a playoff team.

Possible 4pm or Saturday Afternoon Games

Giants @ Eagles (WINNER: Eagles)

The Giants and Eagles will be playoff teams and this NFC East rivalry game will still have some intensity as the both teams will want to lock their playoff seeding. The Eagles should win this and enter the playoffs with a bye and a lot of momentum.

Jets @ Dolphins (WINNER: Dolphins)

The Jets are collapsing right now, but both teams are still in the playoff hunt. This game could decide which team gets that last wildcard spot in the AFC. Even though Tua is always in concussion protocol, the Dolphins should win this game and secure their spot in the playoffs.

Panthers @ Saints (WINNER: Panthers)

Not only could this game decide the NFC South, but this could also decide who gets the last playoff spot in the NFC. This should be a close game but the Panthers should edge this one out.

The NFC is wide open this season, and the Dallas Cowboys and San Francisco 49ers are right in the thick of contention.

Whilst there is a gulf in class between the good and bad teams in the conference this season, the NFC is still wide open at the top. Could we be about to relive NFL history?

The 49ers and Cowboys share 10 Super Bowls between them, with five each.

San Francisco were the team of the 1980s, with four of their five titles coming between 1982 and 1990. Dallas dominated the 90s with three Super Bowls in four seasons.

This era also saw a historic rivalry take place between both teams. Not only did they also meet in the NFC Championship game twice in the early 1970s, they also met four times at the same stage between 1980 and 1995.

As historic rivalries often do, this era saw one of the most famous NFL moments. Fans of the sport during the era will never forget the infamous 1981 NFC Championship game and ‘The Catch’, Joe Montana throwing to Dwight Clark late in the fourth quarter.

Legendary play called by a legendary broadcaster. ?

The late, great Vin Scully served as the voice behind “The Catch” in the 1981 NFC Championship. pic.twitter.com/W6qdS5ZjWQ
— NFL Legacy (@NFLLegacy) August 3, 2022

However, for years, these teams never met in the big moments. Neither team has won a Super Bowl in the 21st century, with San Francisco 0-2 in Super Bowls post-2000. Dallas have not even made it to the NFC Championship since they won it all during the 1995 season. They have since gone 4-10 in the postseason.

Before last season, these teams had not met in the playoffs since January 15th 1995. Last season’s game was a taster of what is to come. Whilst they had not met in years in the postseason, the drama never left this rivalry. A strange play call from Cowboys head coach Mike McCarthy saw them run a quarterback draw with just seconds left and no timeouts. This led to a frantic rush to spike to ball from Dak Prescott ultimately fail. We could be set for another historic matchup.

And there is no reason why not. When it comes to their offenses, San Francisco and Dallas are ninth and 10th respectively for total yards per game, and both feature in the top 10 for both rushing yards and total points per game. With defenses that are both in the top five for total yards allowed per game, these two should create an explosive encounter.

As it stands, at the time of writing, the 49ers would occupy the third seed in the NFC, with a current 9-4 record whereas the Cowboys would take the fifth seed spot despite having the joint second-most wins in the conference (10-3). This is due to their division rivals, the Philadelphia Eagles, having a 12-1 record as it stands.

There is a lot of belief that the 10-3 Minnesota Vikings are a team that has a better record than they should, but they are still a team with double-digit wins before the start of Week 15. This means that they, the Cowboys, Eagles and 49ers are the best teams in the conference.

Should the 49ers, Vikings and Cowboys all win in the Wildcard Round in the currently projected matchups, this would see the Vikings host the Niners and the Eagles host the Cowboys off the back of a playoff bye.

Provided the Cowboys and 49ers both win, then once again these two teams would meet in the NFC Championship game. Both teams already lead the NFL for most NFC Championship appearances, and back-to-back seasons with these teams meeting could reload one of the game’s greatest rivalries.
