Best landing spots for Trey Sermon

By: Jake Rajala

In this not-so-clear NFL world & potential simulation in our literal world, the San Francisco 49ers parted ways with running back Trey Sermon. It was widely noted that the 49ers third-round pick in the 2021 draft was having flashes of excellence this off-season. Sadly, he wasn’t able to fit in with the 49ers RB group – as the offensive wiz Kyle Shanahan opted to ride with Elijah Mitchell, Jeff Wilson Sr, Tyrion Davis-Price, and Jordan Mason. With that said, I’m going to untwine several logical landing spots for the free agent RB and former 49ers ball-carrier.

This run by Trey Sermon is important because it highlights his ability to read & react on the fly

1tech prevents Banks from getting upfield to the weak side backer

Sermon sees the LB shading into the running lane and makes the decision to bounce outsidepic.twitter.com/8lMfSPUTe6
— Jordan Elliott (@splash_cousin) August 29, 2022

Las Vegas Raiders

The Las Vegas Raiders said goodbye to <s>Josh Jacobs</s> Kenyan Drake & I’d love for them to ink the young, explosive RB from Ohio State. The Raiders jolted their wide receiver room this off-season (to say the least) with the signing of Davante Adams. I’d be ecstatic if they signed Sermon and flexed him alongside Josh Jacobs & Zamir White.

Cincinnati Bengals

The Cincinnati Bengals have an unearthly WR trio, but they don’t have overly sexy talent at RB. They have the Pro Bowler Joe Mixon, but I’d like to see them upgrade the RB2 chair (which currently features Samaje Perine). The reigning AFC Champions shouldn’t take their foot off the pedal in the pre-season just yet.

New Orleans Saints

I would really like to see the New Orleans Saints target Marlon Mack or Sermon. Mack or Sermon would be an excellent long-term fit in the Saints offense. Alvin Kamara is due for a suspension in 2023 & Mark Ingram is 32 years old. The Saints should make a creative move by <s>trading away CGJ</s> by inking a talented FA RB.

Kamara made a mistake (also assuming it wasn't a female), but I feel confident in AK.

AK hasn't been a "thug" or fool to any stretch. He scored the highest Wonderlic score in his RB draft class. Payton raved about his football IQ. He's been an elite worker in the offseason, too
— Jake Rajala (@rajala_jake) February 7, 2022

Tampa Bay Buccaneers

The Brady bunch needs to keep their 100 mph approach to winning another Lombardi trophy for Tom Brady, also known as the second-best athlete of all time. They have Playoff Lenny, but they could benefit from a more explosive RB2.

Los Angeles Chargers

The Los Angeles Chargers are unequivocally the biggest Super Bowl dark horse team in my opinion. I project them to win the AFC West – to be honest. I’d like them to make an underrated move by adding another weapon for the highly potent QB Justin Herbert.

??? justin herbert ??? pic.twitter.com/emv3RzG0KN
— Los Angeles Chargers (@chargers) August 17, 2022

New York Jets

I undoubtedly believe the NY Jets have the most overrated HC-QB tandem with Robert Saleh and Zach Wilson. With that said, I believe they are in a big hole and they need as much help as they can get. So, they should sign the talented & young Sermon to help their chances in the very scary AFC East.

Houston Texans

The Houston Texans have a young, somewhat superb QB in Davis Mills and a very explosive & dangerous WR in Brandin Cooks. Although, they don’t carry the most reliable talent at RB. They have the rook Dameon Pierce, but they need more fuel in their RB room. It may be wise for HOU to bring in another weapon to help them exceed expectations in 2022.

Who is the best deep sleeper?

By: Jake Rajala

The fantasy football season is heating up as Week 1 of the 2022 NFL season approaches. With that stated, I’m going to discuss the pivotal running back spot and outline the five best deep sleepers at RB for the 2022 season.

Trey Sermon

The San Francisco 49ers 2020 third-round pick, Trey Sermon, had a disappointing rookie campaign: 193 all-purpose yds and 1 total TD. Nonetheless, he has easily been one of the most improved 49ers this off-season. He started hot this summer and he nicely showed progress in the eyes of Kyle Shanahan. Per NBC Sports, Shanny stated, “Yeah I was really happy with Trey. There were things that we wanted him to improve on from last year. He’s shown that in training camp every single day that he’s got the opportunity to, and I thought he did the same thing last night.”

Trey Lance and Trey Sermon are hyped after the W ???#49ers || #FTTB
?: @957thegame

pic.twitter.com/chSqGnwHVO
— OurSF49ers (@OurSf49ers) August 13, 2022

Travis Homer

The Seattle Seahawks RB Travis Homer was honestly a stud in the Hawks recent pre-season loss. He had four carries for 41 yards and two receptions for 33 (including a 25-yard catch). With Rashaad Penny routinely having injury issues (as he hasn’t played 10+ games in each of the past three seasons), Homer could be involved alongside Kenneth Walker in the Seattle offense.

Jerick McKinnon

The explosive Kansas City Chiefs running back Jerick McKinnon is only rostered in 4% of fantasy football leagues. However, I believe McKinnon will defy expectations and continue to shine in a Chiefs uniform. “Jet” unveiled 315 all-purpose yds in his latest playoff gauntlet and I foresee him being involved all-around quite well moving forward. I also don’t love Clyde Edwards Helaire’s potential and believe it’s imminent that McKinnon will continue to garner an impressive role (assuming he can stay healthy).

? Jerick McKinnon Game™ ?

12-61 rushing
6-81-1 receiving pic.twitter.com/KdkgIws7IW
— EDDIE HIGH (@EddieHigh) January 17, 2022

Chuba Hubbard

The Carolina Panthers RB Chuba Hubbard is only rostered in 5% of ESPN leagues. Nonetheless, he is still a talented RB and he displayed his abilities with 612 rushing yds and 5 rushing TDs last season. Hubbard, who is the Panthers RB2, could certainly have a big role in the Panthers offense if CMAC continues to be derailed by injuries. McCaffrey missed 10 match-ups last season and 14 contests in the season prior.

More bad blood at #Patriots practice on back-to-back plays. Christian McCaffrey threw a ball at Ja’Whaun Bentley after a hard tackle. Deatrich Wise and Chuba Hubbard have been ejected after quick skirmish.
— Jim McBride (@globejimmcbride) August 17, 2022

Benny Snell Jr.

The Pittsburgh Steelers RB Benny Snell Jr. should be leaned on more with Najee Harris moving forward. Snell Jr. ousted 449 all-purpose yds as a rookie & 429 total yards in his sophomore campaign. Mark Kaboly of The Athletic nicely pegged Snell Jr. as the best back-up RB option on the Steelers. It’s clear that he has better experience than Anthony Mcfarland Jr. (fourth-round pick in 2020) and rookie Jaylen Warren.

Reflecting on the 49ers depth chart

By: Jake Rajala

The offensive wiz Kyle Shanahan recently released the 49ers first depth chart. The 49ers obviously have a new face at quarterback with their switch from the savvy veteran Jimmy Garoppolo to the young, dual-threat QB with unearthly expectations: Trey Lance. Nonetheless, there are plenty of other fascinating observations revolving around their depth chart. Hence, I’m going to untwine five takeaways from the 49ers depth chart.

#49ers rookie Drake Jackson does a HUGE backflip for the rookie hype machine! pic.twitter.com/ZqgPlpkmqK
— ??????????? (@TheSFNiners) August 5, 2022

Drake Jackson

The San Francisco 49ers moved on from the off-side devil, Dee Ford, with aim of having Drake Jackson (2022 second-round pick) be an immediate impact player in his first season. The 49ers All-Pro LT Trent Williams has been very impressed by the rook DE. Per NBC Sports, Williams stated, “He’s always got his book in his hands, he’s always doing a little extra. I notice him. I think he’s going to be an outstanding player. Especially having a coach like Kocurek and learning from a guy like Nick, (Arik Armstead), all those guys he’s got right at his call, he’s going to be an outstanding player.”

Trey Sermon

The 49ers RB Trey Sermon was a bit of a disappointment in his rookie campaign (167 rushing yds and 1 rushing TD), but he has actually been impressive this off-season as of late. It should also be noted that he has been training with none other than Dalvin Cook, so his progress shouldn’t be a complete surprise. Sermon is a wildcard – as he could be the RB2 or RB4 in the 2022 season. However, he’s definitely looking like a nice complement to Elijah Mitchell at this point in time.

49ers’ offense started move-the-ball with a three-and-out.

Followed that with a 10-play drive featuring three first downs, including a fourth-down conversion with Trey Sermon that fired up Trey Lance.

Lance was 4-for-4 on the march.

Stay tuned…
— David Lombardi (@LombardiHimself) August 6, 2022

Jauan Jennings

The 49ers seventh-round pick in the 2020 draft, Jauan Jennings, unveiled 282 yards and 5 TDs last season. He’s one of the x-factors in the 49ers offense moving forward and his growth will be vital for his young QB. Jennings will undoubtedly have quality match-ups w/ Deebo Samuel, Brandon Aiyuk, and the mythical George Kittle next to him. Jennings is also in the last year of his contract, so it’s vital that he shows out in 2022.

Jason Verrett

The 49ers have really been patient with the talented, injury-riddled, Jason Verrett. The former Chargers CB is still trying to work back from his season-ending ACL injury that occurred in Week 1 of last season. Shanahan wants him ready for Week 1 and that’s Verrett’s mindset, as well. With that said, Shanny has expressed that they won’t rush him back & that they will insert him at the right time – whether it’s Week 1 or even Week 8.

The #49ers bring back CB Jason Verrett https://t.co/WzEQQVHp74
— Ian Rapoport (@RapSheet) May 2, 2022

Robbie Gould

The 49ers aren’t only talented on offense and defense, but they also exhibit a special kicker by the name of Robbie Gould. The former Bears K ousted an 87% completion percentage (missing three FGs) in 2021. He will be a free agent after this upcoming season, so it will be important that he has a strong 2022 season at this stage in his career.

Latest 49ers running back outlook

By: Jake Rajala

The San Francisco 49ers like to unleash a thousand cuts against opponents with their rushing attack. The 49ers ranked fifth in rushing attempts last season — as they also ranked seventh in rushing yards and fifth in rushing touchdowns. The methodical Kyle Shanahan has Elijah Mitchell, Jeff Wilson Sr, Tyrion Davis-Price, and Trey Sermon at RB.

The alpha RB Mitchell absolutely has the potential to be Top-5 in rushing yards in 2022. Mitchell ranked eighth in rushing yds (963) last season while missing six games. He also averaged an impressive 4.7 YPC. PFF gave Mitchell an admirable 76.3 grade for his 2021 performance.

Elijah Mitchell = 6th round ? #49ers || #FTTB pic.twitter.com/Psb3RQ9EO7
— OurSF49ers (@OurSf49ers) February 16, 2022

The second 49ers RB, Wilson Sr, isn’t a scary RB2, but he has fine production and experience in the 49ers system. He recorded 600 rushing yds and 7 TDs in 2020 and then ran for 294 yds and 2 TDs in 9 contests last season. He re-signed with SF on a one-year deal worth $1.085 million dollars this off-season.

Davis-Price (2022 third-round pick) or Sermon (2021 third-round pick) will likely be the future RB2 after the 2022 season. The former LSU RB ran angry for 1,003 yards and six touchdowns last season. His best rushing performance against Florida (where he notched 287 yds and 3 TDs). His impressive power is similar to the recent AFC Champion Joe Mixon.

RB Tyrion Davis-Price loves contact!#TyrionDavisPrice #49ers pic.twitter.com/emd7Ap7Cym
— John Chapman (@JL_Chapman) May 14, 2022

Sermon was honestly a disappointment last season, but Shanny has expressed enthusiasm about the 23-year-old this off-season. Per NBC Sports, Shanny told reporters on Tuesday, “Watching him in OTAs, he was as yoked-up as he could be. He was in as (good of) shape as he could be. Like you could tell the guy learned from his rookie year and wants to do a lot more.” Sermon is definitely an x-factor in the 49ers offense moving forward.

The 49ers ranked second in rushing yards in 2019 and they will look to return to being a Top-3 rushing team with their young and utterly explosive RB group next season. The 49ers rushing offense can help their wiz head coach finally obtain his ever-elusive first Super Bowl ring.

What is the 49ers biggest obstacle?

By: Jake Rajala

The Jimmy Garoppolo-led San Francisco 49ers clawed their way to a playoff berth last season. Kyle Shanahan will hand the keys to a different, younger QB in Trey Lance and aspire to return to the Super Bowl in Lance’s second NFL season. With that said, I’m going to simply outline the three biggest obstacles for the 49ers in 2022.

Jimmy G —> Deebo Samuel

Unbelievable throw. Unbelievable catch. #NFLTurningPoint #FTTB pic.twitter.com/8twDKmIvUJ
— Lydia (@limajuliettango) January 14, 2022

The growth of the “middle of the pack NFC teams”

The 49ers edged out the decimated New Orleans Saints for a playoff berth last season, but I really expect NO to be a wild-card team next season at least. Jameis Winston was 5-2 without his insane WR trio (Michael Thomas, Jarvis Landry, and Chris Olave) and the Saints also added the Honey Badger to their defense.

Outside of Who Dat Nation, the NFC East could have three potential playoff teams next season. The Washington Commanders will a QB upgrade in Carson Wentz from Taylor Heinicke, while the Philadelphia Eagles offense will aim to make a lot of noise with A.J. Brown. The 49ers battle the Saints and Commanders this season, so it will be vital that Shanny finds a way to squash the fellow NFC squads.

Happy Birthday to one of the greatest to do it

No. 7 | @Mathieu_Era

pic.twitter.com/NtwxUmQNPi
— LSU Football (@LSUfootball) May 13, 2022

The health of star players

It will be a challenge for Lance to help the 49ers return to the playoffs in the gritty NFC in his first season. If the 49ers suffer from the injury bug, it will be a mountain for the complex 49ers team to earn a golden ticket to the NFC playoffs in 2022-2023.

George Kittle, Dee Ford, Deebo Samuel, and Nick Bosa have both missed a lot of games in their 49ers tenure. In particular, Kittle’s injury history is a noticeable concern (13 missed games over the past three seasons).

Gonna spend my whole week stressing about how the Bengals are gonna contain George Kittle pic.twitter.com/CffdBLoHBW
— Willie Lutz (@willie_lutz) December 7, 2021

The production from young offensive players

The 49ers desperately need Brandon Aiyuk and Trey Sermon to be superb contributors in 2022. Aiyuk was a modest sophomore WR, but he wasn’t able to have a coming-out party last season. Although, he can be a star WR2 with 1,000+ receiving yds with his new big-arm QB moving forward. I’m sure that the 49ers faithful would love to see the 2021 third-round pick Sermon (167 rushing yds in 2021) ascend into a quality RB behind Elijah Mitchell, as well. The 49ers could win competitive match-ups off the backs of x-factor profiles like Aiyuk and Sermon.

“Brandon Aiyuk isn’t a route runner” pic.twitter.com/HdJMqwxroX
— Alex (@SadNinersFan_) April 23, 2022

Target RB Kenyan Drake

The dynasty fantasy football season is heating up as the 2021 NFL season approaches. It’s important for fantasy addicts to stay on their heels, as nobody expectedly takes days off in the 365-day gauntlet.

The most important fantasy position to prioritize is undoubtedly the running back spot. RBs highlight first rounds of drafts, likely fill out three starting spots, and there are many unheralded names to understand.

With that being stated, I’m going to outline three RB names that should be sought out in hopes of improving your late August roster. These RBs are underlooked, in golden situations, and will help your fantasy championship dreams in 2021. Let’s begin.

Kenyan Drake ”“ Las Vegas Raiders

The Las Vegas Raiders are the perfect place for all-purpose back Kenyan Drake. The former Arizona Cardinal has a Top 3 TE in Darren Waller by his side, no go-to slot WR in the huddle, and the right mind with Jon Gruden calling the plays. Drake should be able to fit in quite well. Once Drake is in sync, number 4’s offense should excel. It’s no wonder why Drake stated that his offense “was going to space” earlier in July.

Kenyan Drake will be heavily involved, yet he won’t be called on to handle the load. Lots of screens, quick passes, and red zone touches will be on Drake’s plate in the near future. The revamped OL will take several weeks to get in sync. It would only make sense for the talented skat back to be very involved, particularly early on.

I think the #Raiders will be much better run blocking than pass blocking early in the season.

It’s why I’m high on Kenyan Drake. He’ll get carries and short passes until that unit is able to provide solid protection for Carr.

May have to wait for the explosive stuff downfield. https://t.co/Ya9TufKwJJ
— Moe Moton (@MoeMoton) August 23, 2021

Everybody is watching Derek Carr and the LV Raiders compete in the Death Star this season. Expect the 27-year-old receiving back to be the right complement to Josh Jacobs for years to come and to be the true x-factor on the new-look Raiders offense.

Tony Pollard ”“ Dallas Cowboys

Do not give up “close to a lot” for Tony Pollard, but the Dallas Cowboys RB2 in a healthy Dak Prescott’s offense will be a noticeable factor next season. Ezekiel Elliot had his first non-1,000-yard season in 2020 and his outlook is not the same. Expect Pollard, who shined well with the chance last season, to help the wear and tear on Zeke moving forward. Pollard flashed his electric ability in pre-season against the Texans a week ago.

#Cowboys' Mike McCarthy says RB Tony Pollard shows great patience and it showed his feel on that screen pass that went for a touchdown against Houston.

"Tony is having a great camp."
— Mark Lane (@therealmarklane) August 23, 2021

The Cowboys were not in many positions to control the clock and play the game toward their strength last season. However, I expect the Cowboys with a healthy Tyron Smith upfront to return to dominating the ground game. Pollard will have a major uptick in involvement and production soon. Pollard will also cost truly little in such an exchange.

Trey Sermon ”“ San Francisco 49ers

I love Trey Sermon’s outlook looking ahead. The SF 49ers will look to reclaim the top 3 rushing offenses they held in 2020 with rookie Trey Sermon at the RB throne. Raheem Mostert is a few years past his elite playing days, the other former Super Bowl RBs have left the room, and now rookie Sermon will take the load. Shanny made DeVonta Freeman transform from an average RB to an elite stud in Atlanta. The former WFT offensive coordinator also brought life to undrafted Alfred Morris’s career.

The darkhorse candidate for OROY by PFF has shown to be the true complement to the injury-prone Raheem Mostert. Mostert will take the reigns, but the 29-year-old RB that’s missed nearly half the season in two of the past three seasons has a far from daunting outlook.

8 days until Ohio State football

Trey Sermon highlights: a thread pic.twitter.com/PoEPPQn5Rg
— Carrie Lynn (@OSUFAN4U2NV) August 25, 2021

Expect Sermon, who was drafted early for the RB spot, to be a major threat and OROY candidate in Shanahan’s well-oiled offensive machine. The 49ers also carry a “very young offensive attack” that should routinely be lighting up the scoreboards for the next several years.

Seahawks WR Tyler Lockett is a high risk profile

By Calvin K (Twitter: @Calvin_SGF)

The fantasy season is nearly here, and now that it’s later in August, most redraft leagues are finally getting started. The weeks leading up to the NFL’s opening games are always an exciting time, as tidbits of training camp and preseason news flow into social media feeds constantly throughout each day. As usual, there are many players that carry a lot of risk in redraft leagues this year. Below are three who pose difficult decisions for fantasy managers.

Tyler Lockett has never dropped an end-zone target in his career ?

UNDERRATED ??pic.twitter.com/uUnwgw6lqs
— PFF (@PFF) June 11, 2021

1. Tyler Lockett (WR, Seattle Seahawks)

Lockett finished as fantasy’s #9 receiver last year, yet he recorded just three top-10 fantasy weeks. His overall finish was drastically inflated by those weeks, and because of that, he likely wasn’t performing for your fantasy team at a WR1 level overall. Lockett’s first seven weeks were solid, as he had two blowup games and a couple of others where you probably weren’t mad about starting him. However, from Weeks 8-16, Lockett was disastrous for fantasy, posting just one week as a top-30 fantasy receiver. In that stretch, managers were likely starting him for many of those games due to his early-season production. Lockett’s Week 17 blow-up was obviously not counted in most fantasy leagues due to the season having ended, but anyone who played in that week likely didn’t start him then either.

To be fair to Lockett, Russell Wilson’s second-half performance in 2020 was very bad, and whether it was due to the play-calling, decision-making, or something else, that undoubtedly affected Lockett’s stock in a major way. However, Seahawks HC Pete Carroll has committed to reemphasizing the running game, something that could cause efficiency for Wilson, but major inconsistency from Lockett. Lockett is almost certain to be the second option in this offense behind D.K. Metcalf, and the additions of TE Gerald Everett and second-round WR D’Wayne Eskridge only hurt his potential. Lockett is almost certain to provide multiple great weeks again next year, but if he remains inconsistent, it’ll be maddening trying to predict when he’ll be startable.

2. Chase Claypool (WR, Pittsburgh Steelers)

Claypool is an amazing talent and a freak athlete, but like Lockett, consistency struggles could end up plaguing his fantasy performance this year. Claypool finished as the overall WR19 last year, but he put up top-36 WR numbers in just half his games. Part of that could be attributed to his acclimation period as a rookie, but three of his first five weeks had top-12 finishes, so that line of reasoning doesn’t make much of a difference in where he should be valued. Claypool could certainly see a second-year bump in production, but he could also struggle to gain targets with Pittsburgh retaining Diontae Johnson and JuJu Smith-Schuster again.

Claypool’s main target competition from 2020 will return again this year, but on top of the WR duo mentioned, there will be additional mouths to feed in Pittsburgh’s offense. First-round running back Najee Harris will likely command a major carry workload in year one, making Pittsburgh more run-heavy than it has been in the past. On top of that, Harris should also compete for receptions, further cutting into Claypool’s potential passing work. The addition of tight end Pat Freiermuth may only be a hindrance to the short-yardage work that Smith-Schuster specializes in, but even so, adding another capable pass-catcher to the offense certainly doesn’t help Claypool’s status. To reiterate, Claypool is a very talented receiver and a great athlete, however, the pass-catching room may end up being too crowded to make him a consistent starter.

3. Trey Sermon (RB, San Francisco 49ers)

Sermon is a fine late-round flier, but the multitude of options in this 49ers backfield makes it difficult to trust anyone in it, let alone the third-round rookie. Raheem Mostert is expected to lead this backfield in Week 1, but the hope of fantasy players is that Sermon takes over later in the season. It’s certainly possible that he grabs the starting role eventually, but with so many other options available on the team, the 49ers shouldn’t feel a need to give him a big workload in year one.

Along with Mostert, there are many other options in this backfield. Jeff Wilson is currently injured, but like in 2020, he should be a factor in the offense when healthy. Wayne Gallman also produced solid numbers last year with the Giants, and he could siphon away touches from Sermon as well. On top of that, it’s hardly a guarantee that Sermon surpasses Mostert for the lead role at all this year, as Mostert’s speed and explosiveness allow him to be a very efficient rusher. At cost, Sermon isn’t a terrible investment. However, fantasy managers need to be aware of the risk that he carries, and because of that risk, he could easily be seen as a bad draft-day value when the year is over.

Trey Sermon will be a star in Kyle Shanahan’s offense

By: Reese Nasser

The San Francisco 49ers drafted running back Trey Sermon with the 88th overall pick in the 2021 draft. Sermon was one of the most prolific running backs in college the last four years. He spent his first three collegiate seasons at Oklahoma, and then found his way to Ohio State.

In his four seasons, Sermon was a workhorse back. Outside of the 2019 season where his year ended early due to injury, Sermon never had less than 116 rushing attempts.

He finished his college career with one of the more impressive resumes seen in recent years. He ended with 29 touchdowns and 3432 yards from scrimmage.

WHAT A PERFORMANCE FROM TREY SERMON.

In just the second half, he had:
? 271 rushing yards (the most in any half in Ohio State history)
? 2 TDs pic.twitter.com/gjHXTffMuh
— SportsCenter (@SportsCenter) December 19, 2020

Sermon’s biggest fault was his ineffectiveness in the passing game. In his 45 games, he caught just 48 passes for 486 yards. Even with catching less than 50 passes, he still proved to be a playmaker once he got the ball in his hands, averaging just over 10 yards per receptions.

Now with the San Francisco 49ers, Sermon may have fallen to the perfect team. In San Francisco Sermon won’t be looked at to be the number one back. That responsibility will fall to veterain running back Raheem Mostert. Mostert has solidified himself as an above-average back who is at his best when there is another capable player in the backfield. That is where Sermon will step in.

Trey Sermon won this foot race to the end zone ?? pic.twitter.com/KynUeMx8Hi
— ESPN (@espn) January 2, 2021

It is rare where a player may have been drafted to the perfect organization. In Sermom’s case, he may be one of those lucky players that gets to experience that. Head coach Kyle Shanahan has proven to be someone who can fully utilize his players. He also seems to prefer to run a two-running back backfield. This could also land in Sermon’s favor. Sermon could become one of the next great NFL running backs while Shanahan is his head coach. Here’s why.

Built for the Offense

With how often this team utilizes the ground game, it would be difficult for a running back like Trey Sermon to not fit in with this unit. They run often and prefer running backs that can handle carrying the ball at a high rate.

Trey Sermon is a monster

https://t.co/KxcVNS56uL
— PFF College (@PFF_College) January 2, 2021

Sermon has proven to be capable of carrying the running back load for teams. He could shine in an offense such as San Fransiscos. They have brought the best out of most of the players in their backfield, and Sermon could be the next man up.

49ers Run History

The San Francisco 49ers have found their success by relying heavily on their run game. When eventual future QB1 Trey Lance takes the helm, the offense could look different, but that is not the case yet.

With Jimmy Garappolo still leading the charge, the 49ers have played better when throwing less and forcing teams to stop the run. The best example of this is the 2019 NFC Championship game. Garappolo threw just eight passes but the 49ers scored 37 points. In this outing, the 49ers relied entirely on their run game. Raheem Mostert finished the game with 21 attempts, 220 rush yards, and four touchdowns.

Could Become the RB1

The running back depth chart could be shuffled heading into week one. Mostert has appeared in 16 games just once in his career. He is coming off of a season where he was only able to play in eight games.

This is where Sermon could step up. With his successful track record in college and ability to stay healthy, for the most part, the 49ers may turn the ball over to Sermon on a regular basis. A one-two punch consisting of Sermon and Mostert could break out into one of the top duos in the NFL.

While Sermon wasn’t very effective in the pass game in college, that could change in the NFL. Shanahan could utilize him in a manner where they are able to play away from Sermon’s weaknesses and let him flourish at what he is good at. He plays physical and he plays big. He could become a long term solution for the 49ers at running back.

49ers draft two running backs in the 2021 draft

Kyle Shanahan’s offense exited the 2020-2021 season with the 15th ranked offense and question marks presuming key positions on offense. Due to the lackluster offensive display and a fourth-place finish in the division, Shanahan made retooling the offense a high priority in the off-season. Now, at the eclipse of the NFL draft, it’s safe to say the new look offense is a major upgrade over the 2020 version. Not only did Shanny impress the NFL world with his additions to the offensive unit, but I believe he put a spark into the unit that can return it to being Top 5 in the league — as it was in 2019.

Below are three reasons why:

Return of George Kittle

George Kittle, the prolific TE, may have just proved in 2020 he’s one of the most indispensable players in the entire league. Kittle showed his worth to the 49ers when he was standing on the sideline for eight games and their offense was abysmal.

In 2019, Pro Football Focus ranked Kittle the top player in the NFL. So, you may expect serious hurdles when he went down — but nobody would have foreseen the offense looking flat and being a third-down avalanche. Kittle is the key to the run game and pass game. In the past when Kittle went down with an injury, it was revealed that the 49ers YPC went from 4.9 with Kittle in the game, to 3 with him on the sidelines. Kittle flat out demolishes and laughs his way to crushing defenders for the success of the 49ers run game.

In the passing game, Kittle is one of the fastest and “arguably toughest to bring down” skill players in the NFL. Kitlte isn’t just a stat machine, but he also has a knack to making plays at the biggest moments.

George Kittle is an animal. #49ers 48, #Saints #46. #SFvsNO #49wz pic.twitter.com/kg54TE08ZK
— Chris Wilson (@cgawilson) December 8, 2019

It’s hard to ask much more from a tight end than to be an elite run blocker and an elite pass catcher when the player’s team needs it the most.

Brandon Aiyuk entering year two

The ceiling of the offense will rely heavily from explosion on the perimeter. Former rookie Brandon Aiyuk is the most talented wideout and they need the former first round pick to show out next season. Aiyuk missed four games last year, but his 16 game average would’ve been very impressive for a rookie:

997 yards

7 touchdowns

80 receptions

It’s also important to point out that Jimmy Garoppolo missed 10 games last season. Aiyuk performed well with one of the worst QB situations in the league. If Aiyuk is being the electric player he is, it will help his QB play beyond his abilities, create more opportunities for George Kittle from the TE position, then ultimately it will help the team in “tough divisional and playoff games”.

Aiyuk simply can be the home run hitter and offer what they need to complement methodical drives and a strong running game.

Kenneth Gainwell and Elijah Mitchell

1991. That was the last time prior to 2021 that the 49ers drafted two RBs in the same draft. Shanahan drafted Trey Sermon AND Elijah Mitchell in the 2021 NFL draft. The 49ers selected Sermon early in the draft (third round), while the 49ers got a steal with Mitchell in the sixth round.

Sermon clocks a 4.58, which isn’t great for a RB, but the 6’1 220 bruising RB will be a good complement to Mostert’s speed. It can be lightning and thunder in the 49ers backfield. Mitchell is an elusive RB that’s been compared to Alvin Kamara. Kamara may be a stretch and Tarik Cohen may be a better comparison, but Mitchell will likely be involved in the passing game and a nice sprinkle as the RB3.

The two rookie RBs will look to make an immediate impact in Kyle Shanahan’s orchestra that likes to be very precise with the running game.
