Our weekly fantasy football start ’em, sit ’em series will feature your best bets at the skill positions and players you should avoid. We will also include our start of the week for the player who is guaranteed to go off that week. As per usual I picked these players based on the Half-PPR scoring system. Be sure to check out our fantasy football section for rankings and much more!

Quarterbacks

Start ‘Em

Justin Herbert (vs. Mia) – Herbert has an enticing matchup this week against a Miami Dolphins team that will be without Jalen Ramsey. Herbert threw for 367 yards in week 14 last year against the Dolphins and posted a 76.5 completion percentage. Expect similar results for Herbert along with 2 passing touchdowns.

Sit ‘Em

Aaron Rodgers (vs. Buf) – Rodgers has a tough matchup in his opening game with the New York Jets. The Jets offensive line will be tested all game long and even without Von Miller the Bills will be able to generate pressure. Rodgers struggled last year at Buffalo when he threw for just 203 yards.

Running Backs

Start ‘Em

Aaron Jones (vs. Chi) – Jones is in for a big day when the Packers visit the Chicago Bears. Green Bay is dealing with injuries to their top 2 receivers (Christian Watson and Romeo Doubs) which means more targets for Jones. We don’t know what to expect yet from Jordan Love but the Packers will likely rely on the run game in this one.

Sit ’em

Najee Harris (vs. SF) – Harris and the Pittsburgh Steelers have a tough opening matchup against the 49ers and their stout defense. San Francisco allowed only 3.4 YPC in 2022 and they just got Nick Bosa back in action. The Steelers will need to attack the 49ers defense through the air to have a chance in this one.

Wide Receivers

Start ‘Em

Jahan Dotson (vs. Ari) – Dotson is no longer under the radar after his impressive rookie season in Washington. The Commanders get a juicy matchup against a Cardinals defense that will struggle all season. Fellow receiver Terry McLaurin looks to be ready to play but he may not be 100% yet.

Sit ‘Em

DeAndre Hopkins (vs. NO) – We don’t know yet what to expect from Hopkins in this Titans offense. I plan to wait and see how he’s utilized before I put him in the starting lineup. The Saints will have a better-than-average defense this year and will be tough at home.

Tight Ends

Start ‘Em

Evan Engram (vs. IND) – It could be a long day for the Indianapolis Colts when Jacksonville comes to town. The Colts will need to play keep away to have any chance in this one. Expect Engram to have a big day against the Colts who struggled at times to stop tight ends in 2022.

Sit ‘Em

Kyle Pitts (vs. Car) – After a disastrous 2022 it’s hard to put your trust in Pitts. The Panthers finished in the top 10 in points allowed to tight ends last year. That along with the fact we don’t know what to expect from Desmond Ridder has me sitting Pitts this week.

Start of the Week

Jamaal Williams (vs. Ten) – Williams is a must-start for week 1. With Alvin Kamara sidelined due to suspension Williams will get the majority of the workload against the Titans. I don’t expect to see that many touches from rookie Kendre Miller until he gets up to speed. Don’t forget, Williams led the league with 17 rushing touchdowns last year.

One could argue that the outside linebacker position is the most important position on an NFL defense. The ability of these players to not only excel in pass coverage but also rush the quarterback makes them a critical piece on any team. Throughout the years we have seen many great outside linebackers wow us with their combination of speed, strength and athleticism. With that said, the 10 players below have cemented their legacy as the best outside linebackers of all time.

Miller is a 2x Super Bowl champion, 3x All-Pro, Super Bowl MVP and 8x Pro Bowler. He is a nightmare for opposing offenses with his ability to quickly shed would-be blockers and attack the quarterback. At age 34, Miller is showing no signs of slowing down as he finished the 2022 season with 8 sacks.

Undrafted and underestimated, Harrison’s work ethic and desire to win propelled him to become a 2x Super Bowl champion.

To many, the Buffalo Bills were the favorites to hoist the Lombardi trophy last season. Things were progressing as planned as they cruised through the regular season with a 13-3 record. After a Wild Card win against the Miami Dolphins it looked like the Bills were poised to make a run. Then it all came crashing down in a Divisional round match-up against the Cincinnati Bengals. The Bills were blown out 27-10 and frustrations started to boil over between teammates. Will those off-the-field distractions carry over into 2023? Let’s break that down further and offer a record prediction for next season.

The Good

For the most part, the Buffalo Bills roster heading into the 2023-2024 season looks the same. They did lose a key defensive piece in Tremaine Edmunds but were able to bring in Leonard Floyd in free agency. Floyd will help solidify the Bills defense as he finished the last three seasons with at least 9 sacks. Pairing him with the likes of Von Miller, Ed Oliver and Shaq Lawson will give the Bills an elite pass rush. The only real weakness as of now on this defense is at the middle linebacker spot where the Bills will rely on journeyman A.J. Klein.

On the offensive side of the ball, it’s all about Josh Allen. After a rough rookie campaign, Allen has shown he belongs in the elite tier of NFL quarterbacks. Allen has thrown for 4,000+ yards and 35+ touchdowns in the last three seasons and continues to impress with his arm. Allen finished first in total air yards last season with 2,837. The only real concern right now with Allen is the risk of injury. To combat that he has recently stated that he wants to become more of a pocket passer going forward. If the Bills want to win a Super Bowl they have to have Josh Allen healthy and he is starting to realize that.

Embed from Getty Images

The Bad

As I eluded to before there are off-the-field distractions that many haunt the Bills going forward. In the blowout loss against the Bengals Stefon Diggs was not happy and let his frustrations be known. This was not the first time Diggs was seen on the sidelines arguing with teammates and it’s something to watch closely. Diggs was also notably absent from the first day of OTA’s which head coach Sean McDermott admitted was concerning. There seems to be some tension behind the scenes between Diggs and the Bills. If they can’t figure out a resolution it could end up derailing their season.

The Prediction

Although the Buffalo Bills will still be in the hunt for the playoffs, I expect them to take a step back next season. The AFC East will be the best division in football and the Bills have the 4th toughest schedule in 2023. According to Vegas, the current projected win total for Buffalo is 10.5 and I think that is spot on. I have the Bills finishing slightly over that with 11 wins. They will once again be in the playoffs but can they finally make a run?

2023 Record: 11-6

J.J. Watt is now in his 12th NFL season, and his second with the Arizona Cardinals. At this point, he’s considered to be one of the league’s greatest veteran statesmen. But during his heyday with the Houston Texans, he was inarguably the best defensive player in the league. Though he may not be quite the player he once was, he remains one of the most revered and respected players in the league. Does everything he’s accomplished in his career ensure a place in the Pro Football Hall of Fame?

J.J. Watt is a national treasure.@JJWatt x #RedSea pic.twitter.com/3pmGJ4Nc08
— Arizona Cardinals (@AZCardinals) October 17, 2021

Watt has led the NFL in sacks twice (20.5 in 2012, 17.5 in 2015), both of which were seasons he was the league’s Defensive Player of the Year. He has been awarded this distinction a third time, in the 2014 season. As a three-time winner of the award, he’s in truly elite company. The only other players in league history to have done this are Lawrence Taylor and Aaron Donald. What’s more, the only players to have won the award twice are Joe Greene, Ray Lewis, Mike Singletary, Reggie White, and all-time sack leader Bruce Smith.

Smith, White, Greene, and Donald are among the greatest defensive linemen in NFL history. So, too, is Watt.

Number of Seasons with 10+ sacks:

Smith – 13

White – 12

Greene – 1

Donald – 6

Watt – 5

Number of Seasons with 20+ sacks:

Smith – 0

White – 1

Greene – 0

Donald – 1

Watt – 2

?The less you see the quicker you get off.

So key the…

· Back tip of the ball
· Shoulder tip
· or V of the neck

…to empower a quick reaction on movement.

Here's an example from J.J. Watt on keying the back tip of the ball. pic.twitter.com/0oJFa1Orco
— Craig Roh (@craigroh) November 22, 2022

Even more impressively, Watt is the only player in league history to officially record at least 20 sacks in more than one season. The great Deacon Jones, of course, accomplished this as well, three times as a matter of fact, although “unofficially.” This leaves Watt’s credentials for the Hall of Fame nearly impossible to deny. But his abilities as a sack master are equaled by his abilities in running down other plays behind the line of scrimmage.

In each of his Defensive Player of the Year seasons, Watt has led the NFL in tackles for loss (39 in 2012, 29 in 2014 and 2015). Tackles for loss has only officially been a league statistic since 1999, but since that time there is only one player who has recorded more than Watt: Terrell Suggs. Among active players, he’s number one, notably ahead of Calais Campbell, who has played longer, and Von Miller.

Watt’s prominence in all factors of the game easily places him among the greatest defensive players in the history of the NFL. The only question remaining about his place in the Hall of Fame is when exactly it will come. 2022 has arguably been his best individual season since 2018, so it isn’t inconceivable that he puts together a couple of more solid seasons in his career before either retiring or being relegated to a lesser role. But he’s a Hall of Famer without question.

Von Miller could help the Bills have the best defense in 2022

By: Jeremy Trottier

The Buffalo Bills have had one of the NFL’s best defenses over the past few seasons. However, they have been seemingly lacking a certain spark to really make that side of the ball scary to opposing teams. While they have some extraordinary talent on defense already, they were able to solidify it even more in the 2022 offseason, bringing in some top tier talent to truly make this unit a force to be reckoned with. In this article, I will cover 3 reasons why the Bills could have the best defense in the league this year.

Addition of high quality CB2 via the draft

The first notable addition on this list is the Buffalo Bills first-round pick this year, who was CB out of Florida Kaiir Elam. Elam has really strong upside as a cornerback in the NFL, and his press man coverage is something impressive to witness. Elam has all the physical traits, at 6’2″ 197 pounds, and with exceptional athleticism (4.39 49-yard dash, 37.5″ vertical, 6.98 3-cone) he has all the makings of an elite prospect. Let us not forget that the Bills traded down in the 2017 draft to pick 27 which allowed them to select their premier CB1 Tre’Davious White, and with Elam being taken in a similar range (pick #23) it would be wise to not overlook him just because he was not top 15.

Don't sleep on CB Kaiir Elam.@kaiirelam5 | @GatorsFB

?: 2022 #NFLDraft — April 28-30 on NFLN/ESPN/ABC pic.twitter.com/dEIG54x88U
— NFL (@NFL) April 10, 2022

Bringing in a top OLB in Von Miller

The next addition to the Bills defense, and likely the most well-known, was outside linebacker Von Miller. Miller is coming directly off a Super Bowl win with the Los Angeles Rams, which gives the Bills some of the pedigree that comes with a player who understands what it takes to win. Not only should his mentality be a boon to the Buffalo defense, but also his on-the-field production which has been some of the best in the league lately. His ability to get to the QB, and put pressure on them/get in their airspace is one of the most amazing things about him, and his “ghost move” is one of the most intriguing in the league.

Von Miller’s ghost move for the sack just kept the Chargers’ playoff chances alive and well. pic.twitter.com/z7NDjrJzC7
— Gavino Borquez (@GavinoBorquez) January 2, 2022

15 games played & all 15 games started

9.5 sacks, 17 QB hits, 30 pressures

50 total tackles (33 solo & 17 assisted)

19 tackles for loss, 1 forced fumble, 1 pass deflection

Von will be an amazing addition to the Bills defense, and will be the core of their defense & linebacker unit for the near future without a doubt.

Defensive coordinator Leslie Frazier

Leslie Frazier is one of the more intriguing defensive coordinators in the league, primarily because of how he runs defensive schemes. Frazier runs a base 4-3 style with cover 2, but prioritizes the blitz relatively heavily, which bodes extremely well for Von Miller as he took 71 blitzing snaps in 2021. While Leslie has been heavily criticized at times for his defense faulting against the Kansas City Chiefs this past playoffs, he has been a relatively stout coach to date and one game does not necessarily define his tenure with the team.
We should have a great chance to see what Frazier is able to whip up for the Bills in the 2022-2023 season, as he has some amazing talent to work with at every level now, and much the ability to run a wide variety of play types due to this. With this stated, this is why I believe the Bills will have a top defense in 2022, if not the best.

Who is the best pass rusher target for the Rams?

By: Jake Rajala

The Los Angeles Rams made a creative, potentially life-saving decision with the trade for Von Miller last season. Unfortunately, the Rams were not able to retain the future HOF pass rusher. I expect the Rams to witness a return from the greek god-like DT Aaron Donald and they still have Leonard Floyd to hunt down quarterbacks.

Aaron Donald’s feet ? pic.twitter.com/UuRYgK3L7z
— Footballism (@FootbaIIism) February 24, 2022

Despite the Rams projected horses on their defensive front in 2022, they have been rumored to reel in a new pass rusher. Turf Show Times suggested that the Rams could reunite with Robert Quinn and Ramblin Fan believes that Carl Nassib would be a logical fit for the reigning Super Bowl Champions. With that said, I’m going to simply outline a few FA pass rusher targets for the Rams.

Carlos Dunlap

I believe that Sean McVay wants to make another splash signing. They have expressed interest in reuniting with Odell Beckham Jr, but I’d like to see LA prioritize a talented edge rusher to replace Miller. Carlos Dunlap registered 8.5 sacks for SEA last season and he could blossom in a better situation next season. Clowney is off the board and Dunlap should be the next pass rusher on McVay’s wishlist.

Carlos Dunlap season highlights pic.twitter.com/NzsUGIWI8k
— Parker (@ParkerLewes) March 26, 2021

Ryan Kerrigan

I don’t love Ryan Kerrigan’s ceiling, but he may be an excellent value signing. If the Rams aren’t able to obtain Dunlap, I’d like to see the Super Bowl-needy Kerrigan ink a one-year contract with the Rams. Per NBC Sports, he had an injury-filled off-season in 2021 and he also wasn’t able to have a quality role on the Eagles defense in the 2021-2022 season. It should be noted that his 2021 campaign was his onle season without 5.5+ sacks. I believe the combination of the Rams Super Bowl chances and Kerrigan’s desire to win a SB should help the two sides join together.

Ryan Kerrigan has three career INTs and they're all TDs.#HTTR #TopPlays2017 pic.twitter.com/6lkDKQCqVw
— Washington Commanders (@Commanders) February 4, 2018

Justin Houston

The former third-round draft Justin Houston has refused to quit in the late stages of his career. Houston had 11 sacks in 2019 (IND), 8 sacks in 2020 (IND), and 4.5 sacks for the Ravens last season. Houston is a well-rounded defender that could also be a great mentor for the likes of Chris Garrett. The four-time Pro Bowl selection could re-sign with the Ravens, return to KC, or join a different contender: perhaps the Rams dream team?

Will the Buccaneers win another Super Bowl soon?

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers have witnessed the return of the prolific Tom Brady and they will attempt to win their second Super Bowl together in three years together. Brady has the presence of Ivan Drago, but he carries the same unshakeable chip on his shoulder that Rocky Balboa yields.

Still the best way to get some cardio in… @Edelman11 pic.twitter.com/vT3pCWs6VF
— Tom Brady (@TomBrady) March 21, 2022

The Buccaneers will really need to climb a mountain if they want to win another Super Bowl in the near future. The Bucs have surreal competition spine-chilling competition in the NFC and they won’t have the same roster that won Super Bowl LV. Nonetheless, the Bucs could still have a positive and unique journey to win Super Bowl LVII. With that said, here are three reasons why they can win Super Bowl LVII.

The rise of Joe Tryon

The Bucs didn’t win their last Super Bowl by dropping a 40 burger in each playoff contest. Of course, TB12 and his band of misfits were firing off all cylinders. Yet, it was the Bucs defense and front seven that made life very miserable for Drew Brees, Aaron Rodgers, and Patrick Mahomes.

The Bucs will likely not have Jason Pierre-Paul (who could sign with Dallas) and Ndamukong Suh (who may retire), but they will be able to offer plenty of meat on the plate to the second-year pass rusher Joe Tryon. Their 2021 first-round pick ousted four sacks and 10 QB hits on a rotational role last season. Expect Tryon to take that common sophomore pass rusher leap and help Shaq Barrett constantly harrass NFC signal-callers next season.

JOE TRYON pic.twitter.com/8tf8DWVWVs
— Paul Atwal (@AtwalNFL) August 15, 2021

Scotty Miller

I really like the potential of the 24-year-old Scotty Miller. Kay Adams has gushed over Miller and I believe his coming-out party will be in 2022. The speed demon will replace Antonio Brown nicely in my opinion and he will offer a unique skill set in the Bucs offense. When the speedster Brandin Cooks played a year with Brady in 2017, he unveiled a career-high in YPC (16.6). His second regular season-best YPC is 15.1.

Miller spent a large portion of the 2021 season on IR, but I feel comfortable that the hungry wideout will be healthy and ready to be a big part of the Bucs offense moving forward. Arians will routinely be brewing up shots down the field to the third year wideout in 2022.

BRADY TO SCOTTY MILLER TD TO END THE HALF ?

(via @NFL)pic.twitter.com/V8btMA00Ny
— Bleacher Report (@BleacherReport) January 24, 2021

The Von Miller-less Los Angeles Rams

Sean McVay might have reeled in the shiny Allen Robinson and axed Robert Woods, but I believe the Rams will struggle to replace the mighty Von Miller. The former Rams sack artist had four sacks in the recent playoff gauntlet (2 sacks in Super Bowl LVI).

The Rams barely edged out the Brady bunch in the last postseason, as McVay’s squad won 30-27. The Rams will still have a lethal offense in the inevitable big showdown against the Bucs next season, but they will be without a star pass rusher across from Aaron Donald against the reigning NFC South champions.

.@VonMiller is joining a @BuffaloBills defense that did this in 2021:

PPG allowed: 17 (1st in NFL)
Total YPG: 272.8 (1st in NFL)
Pass YPG: 163.0 (1st in NFL)
3rd Down %: 30.8 (1st in NFL)
Opp Passer Rating: 65.3 (1st in NFL) pic.twitter.com/zm9F0liB1b
— NFL (@NFL) March 16, 2022

What is the best landing spot for Chandler Jones?

The elite pass rusher Chandler Jones enters an interesting period in his career. The two-time All-Pro, four-time Pro Bowl pass rusher, and one-time Super Bowl champion is a 2022 free agent and it’s clear he will have plenty of interest this offseason. Here is a look at how special Jones has been in his career thus far:

*stats are according to Pro Football Reference

107.5 career sacks

seven seasons of 10+ sacks

19 sacks in 2019 (single-season career high)

NFC Defensive Player of The Year in 2019

Jones has been a force to be reckoned with at every point of his career thus far. The question is: where his next destination be? Here are the potential landing spots for the former 21st overall pick.

Pittsburgh Steelers

The Pittsburgh Steelers have the tenth most cap space in the league and they have the Hulk, also known as T.J. Watt. Jones could be tired of playing with J.J. Watt and move to play with the new and improved Watt. The Steelers have the money to tempt Jones to wreak havoc across from T.J. and Cameron Hayward in the AFC.

WATT. A. SEASON. FOR. T.J.#NFLHonors on ABC & NFL Network pic.twitter.com/bA4uQiL6DP
— Pittsburgh Steelers (@steelers) February 11, 2022

The Steelers led the NFL in sacks last season and they could look to build on it with Jones and potentially create the most superb pass rush of all time. The days of the Steel curtain and the James Harrison-led defense might be in the review mirror, but Mike Tomlin can bring the team back to its roots in 2022. The Steelers are truly a team capable of making the playoffs in the near future, especially if they add a quality QB. Meanwhile, the Arizona Cardinals may not have Kyler Murray, so Jones (and J.J. Watt) may not be thrilled to play in AZ for potentially the rest of his career.

Miami Dolphins

The Mike McDaniels-led Miami Dolphins have swag and the most cap in the NFL. The Dolphins could add a new toy to join Jaylen Waddle for Tua Tagovailoa and they can swing big for a few other free agents. Life won’t get easier for the Dolphins in the AFC East, as they frequently play Josh Allen, Mac Jones, and the young Zach Wilson.

Mike McDaniels has been a mastermind in San Francisco…30 rushing touchdowns last season. Part 2 of #BaldysBreakdowns pic.twitter.com/n6MfTFat1j
— Brian Baldinger (@BaldyNFL) September 3, 2020

Florida is another relaxing state for Jones to consider living in. Jones could also be a big fan of the second-half success he witnessed the Dolphins have. The combination of talent, location, and money could help Jones ink a massive deal with the Dolphins. Jones would be the second future Hall of Fame DL to sign with the Dolphins over the past several years (Ndamukong Suh being the other).

Cincinnati Bengals

The Cincinnati Bengals could soon ink a few more big profiles in a similar way that the Los Angeles Rams did last season. The Rams signed Von Miller to play with Aaron Donald and now it could be time for Cincy to add Jones to play with Trey Hendrickson (14 sacks in 2021). The Bengals have the resources (fourth in cap space) to make Jones very tempted to sign with the 2021 AFC champions.

Trey Hendrickson. Super Bowl SACK. #RuleItAll

?: #SBLVI on NBC
?: https://t.co/K02y40b5Nu pic.twitter.com/SS9zh1573s
— NFL (@NFL) February 13, 2022

The Bengals may have 2021 Offensive Rookie of The Year Ja’Marr Chase and Joe Burrow, but they shouldn’t take the gas off the pedal. There’s been a reoccurring theme of “dynasty” teams like the Seattle Seahawks and Kansas City Chiefs taking a step back after getting to the Super Bowl. Zac Taylor could really capitalize off Trey Hendrickson’s prime years and the WR band being together (Chase, Tyler Boyd, Tee Higgins) by bringing in an elite defender like Jones this offseason.

The Atlanta Falcons released Dante Fowler Jr. and it’s clear that Fowler Jr. has had a disappointing career after being selected third overall in the 2015 NFL draft. The former Top 3 draft pick had a career season in 2019 as a Los Angeles Ram, as he recorded 11.5 sacks. Unfortunately, he wasn’t able to reclaim stardom in 2020 (3 sacks) or 2021 (4.5 sacks).

?Siri, play highlights of Dante Fowler Jr. getting to the QB on repeat. pic.twitter.com/h8D9OODg7K
— Atlanta Falcons (@AtlantaFalcons) March 18, 2020

Fowler Jr. didn’t live up to his three year, $45 million dollar contract, but the Falcons are also striving to open up lots of cap space. They hold a talented quarterback in Matt Ryan who will be the NFL’s highest paid player this offseason. The Falcons could decide to free up cap space, restructure Ryan’s deal, and be contempt with keeping him.

The next chapter of Fowler’s journey won’t be on the Falcons, nonetheless. The 27 year old will be on the search for a new home. Fowler Jr. may be we wise to chase a prove it deal with a talented team. With that said, what are the top landing spots for Fowler Jr.? Well, here are a few teams that would make a ton of sense to ink the former Falcon.

Arrowheadlines: The Chiefs will be back at the Super Bowl next year according to Chris Jones https://t.co/i8046kk7TB
— Arrowhead Pride (@ArrowheadPride) February 15, 2022

Kansas City Chiefs

The Kansas City Chiefs and AFC West champions need more juice from their pass rush. Melvin Ingram (1 sack in 2021) is not the partner in crime Chris Jones deserves. The soon to be 33-year-old edge rusher is also facing free agency in 2022. The Chiefs will likely not have the money to strike big on Von Miller or Chandler Jones (20th in cap space), but they could have a great value player in the former Top 3 draft pick.

Fowler Jr. would have plenty of opportunities to chase QBs that are forced to match points with Patrick Mahomes. He would also have a lot of opportunities playing next to Chris Jones and it’s safe to say that Fowler played at his best next to the elite Aaron Donald in LA.

Indianapolis Colts

The Indianapolis Colts defensive coordinator Gus Bradley was Dante Fowler Jr.’s coach in Jacksonville, so he has strong familiarity and interest in the FA edge rusher. Bradley could really use pass rush help on his team that ranked 26th in sacks last season and 17th in passing YPG allowed. DeForest Buckner (7 sacks in 2021) needs more explosion next to him.

DeForest Buckner is a menace at rushing the QB ? @DeForestBuckner @Colts pic.twitter.com/ZR4kOOFFMP
— The Checkdown (@thecheckdown) March 29, 2021

The Colts could look at pass rush help next to Kwity Paye (four sacks in 2021) and Al-Quadin Muhammed (six sacks in 2021) this offseason. The Colts are also seventh in cap space, so they could really afford to take a sharp look at Fowler Jr. and other free agents of interest.

Los Angeles Rams

The LA Rams could call their ex-pass rusher and see if he wants to return to Sean McVay’s lab and chase another Super Bowl trophy. Fowler Jr. could return to the dreamy city and really aim to build off an impressive Rams tenure. The Rams could lose free agent Von Miller (two sacks in Super Bowl LVI/115.5 career sacks) this offseason. It would seem like a smart fit for Fowler Jr. to fill in the shoes of Miller and return to wrecking havoc next to Aaron Donald.

.@VonMiller making plays when it counts the most.

?: #SBLVI on NBC pic.twitter.com/kjiUdNIg0y
— Los Angeles Rams (@RamsNFL) February 14, 2022

The Rams present a strong destination to Fowler due to the familiarity aspect, fit, and winning attitude that attracts any professional football player.

New Orleans Saints

The Saints are honestly in cap hell, but I love the idea of Fowler Jr. playing in New Orleans. They have Tonah Kpassagnon behind Cameron Jordan and Marcus Davenport, but I believe the ceiling of Fowler Jr. is too tempting for Mickey Loomis to overlook.

With this sack, Cameron Jordan now has over 100 in his #NFL career!

?: NBC and @peacockTV pic.twitter.com/DMZg1gmdkA
— Sunday Night Football on NBC (@SNFonNBC) December 20, 2021

The insanely talented and injury prone Davenport will be a pricey free agent in 2023 and the regular Pro Bowl Jordan will be 33 years old this offseason. They lost Trey Hendrickson to the Cincinnati Bengals in 2021, so the three headed monster broke up. Fowler Jr. wouldn’t only help the Saints create a lethal pass rushing combination, but he could very likely be a long term starter in New Orleans. If Fowler Jr. has a modest season, they could elect to not bring back Davenport in 2023, or cut ties with Jordan in 2023. In reality, the cap-strapped Saints will have to get creative with free agent targets this offseason. Fowler Jr. could be a fantastic addition, as they look to win a Super Bowl with their many stars in their prime together.

Honorable mentions:

Las Vegas Raiders

The Las Vegas Raiders were sixth in passing YPG in 2021, but 21st in sacks last season. They need more help with from Mad Max (Maxx Crosby) and Yannick Ngakoue. Crosby and Ngakoue are also free agents in 2023. It would seem unlikely that they can afford both pass rushers will should likely demand monster deals. They could be excited about the possibility of adding a talented and highly motivated Fowler Jr. on a short term deal. It would be a lower risk and cheaper acquisition from Josh McDaniel’s view.

This was the No. 1 need for the #Raiders and of course, Yannick Ngakoue reunites with Gus Bradley — the two were together with the #Jaguars. https://t.co/edndJCWacm
— Ian Rapoport (@RapSheet) March 15, 2021

The Raiders play Patrick Mahomes and Justin Herbert four in four matchups a season for a long time. They could have Fowler Jr. helping their pass rush get more takedowns on the young quarterbacks if he turns around his performance in 2022.

Pittsburgh Steelers

The 2021 Defensive Player of The Year T.J. Watt showed that even he needs more help to slow down Patrick Mahomes in the playoffs. The Steelers got poured on by Mahomes in both matchups this past season. The KC Chiefs beat the Steelers 36-10 in their first regular season matchup and then continued their dominance in the second battle royal, as they won 42-21 in the wildcard weekend.

The Steelers are ranked 10th in cap space (roughly $31 million), so they can get creative with targeting a much needed QB and pass rush help opposite Watt. If they don’t bring back JuJu Smith Schuster, they could especially target a defender in the front seven. Fowler Jr. would have to be mouth watering at the idea of playing across from Watt and Cameron Heyward on the inside. The Steelers won’t be an ideal landing spot for some of top free agents at pass rusher or any position, but they could benefit from talent profiles on prove it deals.

By: Courtney Burrows

Now that the Superbowl is officially over and there is (gulp) 206 days until the 2022 season, we dive headfirst into free agency, dynasty, rookies, and the draft. Superbowl LVI saw the Rams defeat the Bengals 23-20 in a battle till the end. There are numerous free agents on both sides of the ball who are hoping to either resign or move to another team.

Cincinnati Bengals

TE-CJ Uzomah

Drafted in the 5th round in 2015, Uzomah has been a mainstay for the team. He played only 2 games in 2020 and many thought he was fading into the background. He came back staying in sync with Burrow for five touchdowns and 493 yards. Now, those aren’t insane TE numbers, but they are decent and consistent especially when you consider he is the 3rd to 4th target on the team. It’s always hard to lose a player that has been with the team since the beginning, but they do two other TEs on the roster, (though I believe Uzomah to be a better pass-catcher than Sample). I think they keep Uzomah due to his big middle-of-the-field presence, chemistry with Burrow, but he is coming off an MCL sprain that could be lingering.

Prediction: Retained( but really depends on money)

Eli Apple Tomorrow pic.twitter.com/bhplOWapuD
— LeJonesSZN (Alpha Male) (@LeJonesMVP) February 14, 2022

CB Eli Apple

Apple unfortunately was the defender that allowed Cooper Kupp to score the game-winning touchdown in the Superbowl. This after much controversy has surrounded him when in the last few weeks he has taken to Twitter to speak of his distaste of the Saints and Giants (two of his former teams). These Twitter comments have included hating the fanbase to the actual cities themselves. While in New Orleans he had 11 passes defended and only one interception, and in 30 games with the Giants, he was suspended and only racked up 102 tackles. It seems to me that someone with a rocky background should keep his head down and just play hard to win every game and prove his worth. I don’t think this time he did. This season with the Bengals, he had 11 assists and two interceptions. There are younger, stronger, faster CBs out there not only in the draft but coming up in free agency like Casey Hayward Jr, or Steven Nelson.

Prediction: Released

QB Brandon Allen

It is quite obvious Allen is a backup and Burrow is not going anywhere anytime soon, but when Burrow went down last year, it was Allen who stepped in. He has learned under Coach Taylor’s offensive system and has developed a great rapport with Burrow. At 29 years old, it might be smart to retain him one more year and make a trade for a younger back up next year as there will be lots of QB shuffling this off-season. Allen fits well behind Burrow, and with the Bengals looking to make another run at the big game next season, it makes sense to prioritize your off-season elsewhere than another QB. During the 2021 season when Allen stepped in, he threw for 925 yards and five TDs. He has proven himself to be coachable, consistent, and able to do the smaller tasks asked of him.

Prediction: Retained

Eli threw it better, confirmed @obj pic.twitter.com/YGcmm9Dwan
— Barstool New York (@BarstoolNYC) February 15, 2022

Los Angeles Rams

WR Odell Beckham Jr.

After numerous up and downs seasons with the Browns, OBJ signed a one-year deal with the Rams. We all know now that the Rams organization was “all-in” signing all the missing pieces to make a Superbowl caliber team, and that helped propel them to Superbowl Champions. Immediately following the Superbowl win, OBJ tweeted he really wanted to stay in LA and was even willing to take a salary cut, and that is good news considering the Rams’ salary cap. OBJ came up big when Robert Woods went on IR and complemented Kupp as a huge red-zone target. He genuinely seemed to mesh with this team well, and there were no on or off-field antics swirling around him. Maybe the sea air refreshed him enough to focus on football and the job he was paid to do. In 9 games with the Rams, he had 359 yards on 31 receptions and five touchdowns. He was instrumental in the first quarter of the Superbowl for Stafford catching the 1st TD of the game. I feel teams will be gunning for him after his turnaround time with the Rams, but I think the Rams would be wise to hold on to him one more year, especially at a discount as they make another run for the glory.

Prediction: Retained

RB Sony Michel

Akers is back and Henderson looked good as the passing-back in the Rams Superbowl victory. Michel was the lead back Weeks 13-16 when Henderson went down carrying the ball for 423 yards, and overall had 845 yards and four TDs last season. He is a great 3rd-down back but struggles in the passing game. I would love to see him in Atlanta complementing Patterson. I think Davis is not a viable option, and I am guessing that Atlanta focuses on a QB in RD 1 or 2 to rep and learn behind Matt Ryan. Don’t forget Michel is a graduate of Georgia, so coming home probably has a nice ring to it.

Prediction: Released

OLB Von Miller

Oh, how I love Von. I loved watching him lead the defense for years with Denver and when he went to the Rams, my first thought was”¦they are going to win the Superbowl with him! He is 32 and will be 33 before the start of the 2022 season, but when healthy he is a beast, and that may carry a high dollar price. I could see him wanting to see what else is out there as he contemplates retirement within the next few years, but what could be better than LA”¦sun, sand, and another run at a back-to-back Superbowl appearance? He most likely will desire to stay with the Rams, but they might not be able to afford him. If he is willing to lower his salary terms, maybe, but there are plenty of teams that would love him for one to two more years including the Cardinals, Colts, Bears, and Raiders.

Prediction: Released (unless a lower salary is bargained)
