Our weekly fantasy football start ’em, sit ’em series features your best bets at the skill positions and players you should avoid. We also include our start of the week for the player who is guaranteed to produce that week. Below is our week 10 edition and as per usual I picked these players based on the Half-PPR scoring system. Be sure to check out our fantasy football section for fantasy football advice and much more!

Quarterbacks

Start ‘Em

Will Levis (@ TB) – In a move that surprised nobody, the Titans officially named rookie Will Levis the starter going forward this week. Levis cooled off a bit in last week’s loss to Pittsburgh but has a plus matchup in week 10. The Buccaneers have given up 71.9 fantasy points in the last two games to opposing quarterbacks including 794 passing yards. Rookie C.J. Stroud shredded this Tampa Bay defense on Sunday and Levis will also have success against this secondary.

Sit ‘Em

Russell Wilson (@ Buf) – The last time we saw Wilson and the Broncos they upset the Chiefs at home. Wilson finished that game with 3 touchdowns on just 114 passing yards. It was an impressive day for Denver which has won two in a row. Up next they get to face the Bills in Buffalo coming off the bye. Buffalo is looking to put last week’s struggles behind them and I expect their defense to own this contest. Look for Buffalo to control the clock and run the ball taking the pressure off of Josh Allen.

Running Backs

Start ‘Em

Brian Robinson Jr. (@ Sea) – Robinson Jr. and the Commanders will be on the road again this time heading to Seattle. Washington squeaked by New England last Sunday and Robinson scored his 5th rushing touchdown of the season. The Seahawks were shredded on the ground last week by the Ravens for 298 total rushing yards. Expect the Commanders to feed Robinson early and often in this contest. Fellow running back Antonio Gibson is also worth considering as both could be in for big days.

Sit ‘Em

Jerome Ford (@ Bal) – Jerome Ford could be in for another tough day in Baltimore. The last time the Browns faced the Ravens, Ford was held to just 26 rushing yards on 9 carries. Baltimore’s defense has looked dominant, especially at home. Last week they held Kenneth Walker III to just 16 rushing yards and 1.7 total fantasy points. Sit Ford this week and most of the Browns offense.

Wide Receivers

Start ‘Em

DJ Moore (vs. Car) – Since his week 5 explosion vs. the Washington Commanders, Moore has yet to break 10 fantasy points (Half PPR). Some of that has to do with the injury to Justin Fields and an inconsistent Bears offense. Up next Moore gets his revenge game as Chicago welcomes the Panthers on Thursday night. I see Moore finding the end zone this week vs. a surprisingly stingy Panthers secondary.

Sit ‘Em

Davante Adams (vs. NYJ) – Despite the coaching and quarterback change last week, Adams had another dud of a game. In fact Adams hasn’t broken double-digit fantasy points since week 4. Up next he gets to face the Jets defense who have locked down opposing wide receivers all year. Eventually, Adams’s numbers will pick up again just not this week.

Tight Ends

Start ‘Em

Kyle Pitts (@ Ari) – It’s been another disappointing season for Kyle Pitts owners. Pitts has only found paydirt once this season and has struggled to produce much of anything. If you’re going to start Pitts this is the week to do it. The Falcons head west to take on the woeful Cardinals. I see Pitts finally get back in the end zone vs. an Arizona defense that has given up touchdowns in back-to-back games to opposing tight ends. The change at quarterback to Taylor Heinicke should help this offense overall which has been lackluster under Desmond Ridder.

Sit ‘Em

David Njoku (@ Bal) – As I stated earlier the entire Browns offense is due for a tough day vs. Baltimore. On top of that, Njoku is also dealing with a knee injury that is keeping him out of practice. Even if he were fully healthy I would still sit Njoku in this one. The Ravens are allowing an average of just 4.1 fantasy points per game to opposing tight ends.

Start of the Week

Tony Pollard (vs. NYG) – What happened to Tony Pollard this season? To say Pollard has been underwhelming is and understatement. He hasn’t found the end zone since week 1 and has only broken the 100-yard rushing mark once this year. Thankfully for Pollard and the Cowboys, they get to face the lowly Giants this week at home. The last time these two teams faced Pollard had 2 rushing touchdowns and Dallas hammered New York 40-0. Pollard will finally get back in the end zone this week as the Cowboys will look to control the clock. Dallas is a massive 16.5 favorite in this one and the point spread still may not be enough.

On paper, the Dallas Cowboys had a successful 2022 campaign. They finished the year with a 12-5 record and blew out Tom Brady and the Buccaneers in the Wild Card round. In the Divisional round, the Cowboys were matched up with their nemesis the San Francisco 49ers. They were once again bounced from the playoffs by Kyle Shanahan’s team leaving Cowboys fans wanting more. The Cowboys haven’t reached the NFC Championship game since 1996. Dallas will once again try to break that streak heading into next season. Did they do enough this offseason to improve their chances? Find out below as we offer a record prediction for the 2023-2024 season.

The Good

Coming out of Penn State we knew Micah Parsons had all the tools to be successful. What we didn’t know was how good he would be this early on. Parsons has 26.5 sacks in the first two years of his NFL career and is currently the 2023 favorite for Defensive Player of the Year. Parsons has the rare ability to line up all over the defensive backfield causing matchup nightmares for opposing offenses.

Embed from Getty Images

Dallas has also solidified the cornerback position by bringing in Stephon Gilmore this offseason. Pairing him with the recently extended Trevon Diggs will give Dallas two lock-down corners going forward. If they can stay healthy the Cowboys should have a top 5 defense next year.

The Bad

The Cowboys had one of the best offensive units under former OC Kellan Moore. That’s why it was a bit perplexing that Dallas decided to let him walk this offseason. Play calling wasn’t the issue for the Cowboys offense, it was more of a combination of shrinking in big games and turnovers. Speaking of turnovers, Dak Prescott had a career-high 15 interceptions in 2022. It’s a cause for concern, so much so that head coach Mike McCarthy vows to run the ball more in 2023. McCarthy will take over the play-calling duties for Dallas and with that comes added pressure. If McCarthy doesn’t make the playoffs he could be out of a job.

The Prediction

When you break down all the factors going into next season it’s hard to see the Dallas Cowboys making a run. The offense will take a step back this year and if Tony Pollard goes down they are in trouble at the running back position. This may end up being McCarthy’s last year in Dallas.

2023 Record: 9-8 (3rd in the Division)

The running back position has been a hot topic in the NFL recently. Saquon Barkley has voiced his displeasure at being franchise tagged and left the possibility of sitting out the 2023 season. Barkley and the Giants will likely work things out but what he is doing now is important for the future of the position. In all, 4 players who made our list of the best running backs of 2023 all have been tagged or have contract disputes.

This past offseason the top 3 running backs available were all franchise tagged. In addition, Chargers running back Austin Ekeler is also not happy about his current contract situation. If it wasn’t for a recent boost in incentives, Ekeler may have been traded. It’s important to point out these details as the real value of running backs has been debated in recent years. One thing you can’t debate is that the players below all play a critical role in their teams’ success. Let’s now look closer at the top 10 running backs in the NFL today.

Carr will open up the field again for Kamara and the running back should bounce back. Health and off-the-field issues will be a concern for Kamara but as of now, it looks like he won’t be suspended.

Mixon is a true three-down back in one of the league’s best offenses. In 2023, he will have the backfield all to himself as Samaje Perine is now with the Broncos. You can expect another Pro Bowl caliber year from Mixon and plenty of opportunities to score.

8. Tony Pollard

When the Dallas Cowboys released Ezekiel Elliott this offseason it signaled a changing of the guard. They were now confident enough to let Tony Pollard be the feature back. Pollard has all the tools of a modern NFL running back. He will now get the chance to showcase those skills for Dallas. The only concern with Pollard is durability. Can he handle the full-time workload?

2022 Stats: 1,378 all purpose yards | 12 total touchdowns

7. Aaron Jones

For most of his career in Green Bay, Aaron Jones has had competition in the Packers backfield. That really hasn’t mattered as Jones has put up numbers regardless. Jones has always been a threat in the receiving game and in 2022 had 5 receiving touchdowns. Now with Aaron Rodgers out of the picture, Jones will be relied on more than ever.

2022 Stats: 1,516 all purpose yards | 7 total touchdowns

6. Saquon Barkley

The aforementioned Saquon Barkley will be playing with a chip on his shoulder next season. For what it’s worth, the Giants should’ve franchise tagged Daniel Jones and paid Barkley his due. It’s now unlikely that the two sides will agree on a new deal before the start of the season. The off-the-field noise won’t slow down Barkley’s production in 2023.

2022 Stats: 1,650 all purpose yards | 10 total touchdowns

5. Nick Chubb

Since his rookie season, Nick Chubb has rushed for 1000+ yards each year he has been in the league. Chubb has always been an old school type of running back who can carry the heavy load. He had 302 rushing attempts last season and is showing no signs of slowing down.

2002 Stats: 1,764 all purpose yards | 13 total touchdowns

4. Derrick Henry

Like Chubb, Derrick Henry is a between the tackles type of runner with breakaway speed. There were rumors this offseason that the Titans might try and trade Henry. Those rumors turned out to be false as Henry looks poised for another big year. No matter who the quarterback is for the Titans, Henry will be the focal point of this offense for the foreseeable future.

2022 Stats: 1,936 all purpose yards | 13 total touchdowns

3. Austin Ekeler

Austin Ekeler is one of the most versatile running backs in the NFL today. Line him up anywhere on the field and Ekeler will deliver. As we mentioned before this is likely Ekeler’s last season for the Chargers due to the contract situation. If he hits free agency expect a big payday for Ekeler.

2022 Stats: 1,637 all purpose yards | 18 total touchdowns

2. Josh Jacobs

Despite being franchise tagged this offseason, Josh Jacobs has been business as usual. Jacobs is a true professional who lets his game speak for itself. In 2022, Jacobs led the league in rushing yards, all purpose yards, yards per game and total touches. Even with a change at quarterback for the Raiders you can expect the gameplan to be the same. Keep feeding Jacobs.

2022 Stats: 2,053 all purpose yards | 12 total touchdowns

1. Christian McCaffrey

Kyle Shanahan has always deployed a running back by committee offensive system. By bringing in McCaffrey he knew he would have to rely heavily on his new star. The trade paid off as the 49ers were just 1 game away from the Super Bowl despite questions at quarterback. Now with a full offseason under his belt, McCaffrey is set for a monster year in San Francisco.

Earlier this morning, news broke that the Minnesota Vikings will be releasing Dalvin Cook. This has been the expected outcome for some time now and we floated the idea back in May. According to Adam Schefter, the Vikings will try to trade Cook one more time before a release on Friday. It would be shocking if a team swooped in now and completed a trade but crazier things have happened. Before we look ahead at some landing spots for Dalvin Cook let’s first look at the fantasy impact.

This is obviously huge news for Alexander Mattison as he will finally be the lead back in Minnesota. Mattison has a chance now to finish as a top-tier fantasy running back in 2023. Keep an eye out for our fantasy football rankings as when they are updated you will see a pretty big jump for Mattison. As for Cook, it all depends on where he lands. Let’s now look at 3 potential suitors for the star running back.

Miami Dolphins

Rumors of Dalvin Cook to the Dolphins have been circulating for months now. The Dolphins have no clear-cut #1 running back and this spot makes the most sense. Raheem Mostert, Jeff Wilson Jr. and rookie Devon Achane round out the crowded running back room for the Dolphins. Achane was a 3rd round pick in the 2023 NFL Draft so the Dolphins have some investment there. Still, when you have a chance to grab one of the top running backs in the game you take it.

Denver Broncos

The Denver Broncos are another team to keep an eye on as a Dalvin Cook landing spot. Denver has Javonte Williams coming back and they also signed ex-Bengal Samaje Perine this offseason. There are some factors here to consider. The first is Williams suffered an ACL tear back in October and it might take some time before he is ready. The other is Perine is more of third down running back and has never handled a heavy load. If Head Coach Sean Payton believes his team is a contender, expect him to make a move.

Dallas Cowboys

Dallas is a bit of a wild card on this list but there are signs the Cowboys may be interested in Cook. Earlier this offseason the Cowboys decided to release Ezekiel Elliott and move ahead with Tony Pollard. Although Pollard has shown a ton of potential the questions are there if he can handle a full-time role. Fantasy owners would not be happy with Cook entering the mix but the Cowboys offense would become a major threat next season. Never count out Jerry Jones to make a splashy move and bringing in Dalvin Cook would certainly be that.

Welcome to our new feature where we recap a particular player’s journey in the 2022-2023 NFL Fantasy Football Season. This article features preseason expectations, draft expectations, overall season production, and critical moments during the season. We will do this for all 32 teams as we highlight a player per team.

PRESEASON EXPECTATIONS

There has been a clamor for Tony Pollard to get more reps as with his limited plays, he looks like the better RB compared to Ezekiel Elliott. Pollard seems faster and a better fit than Elliott who has been riddled with injury.

DRAFT EXPECTATIONS

Tony Pollard came in as the 27th-ranked RB with an ADP of 90. Owners could find him in the 7th-9th rounds. That would be great value for a flex/backup RB in fantasy. Time would tell if Pollard would be getting more reps, especially with a Cowboys team that was unsure if Dak Prescott was their guy at QB.

I spoke with Max Kellerman earlier today on "This Just In" about Trey Lance, Tony Pollard, and undervalued players you should prioritize in fantasy football drafts: pic.twitter.com/LbS87IE4zF
— Moody (@EricNMoody) August 30, 2022

OVERALL SEASON PRODUCTION

Tony Pollard was one of the biggest surprises of the fantasy season as he destroyed all expectations with a top-7 RB finish in fantasy football. What makes it better as his snap percentage revolved around 40-60%. This shows how efficient and impressive his performance was as he still split reps with Zeke. He ended the year with 1007 yards and nine TDs, all career-highs. In the receiving game, he boasted career-highs in 371 yards and three TDs. It will be fascinating to see how Pollard will be projected for next year’s season.

Tony Pollard set career-highs with:

-1,007 rushing yards
-9 rushing TDs
-39 catches
-371 receiving yards
-3 receiving TDs

Here are some of his top plays from the year. Should Dallas give Pollard a new deal, franchise tag him or let him walk in free agency? pic.twitter.com/72QDen5XRk
— How Bout Them (@HowBoutThem88) February 16, 2023

CRITICAL MOMENTS DURING THE SEASON

Week 8 vs Chicago Bears

After an up-and-down start to the season so far, Pollard broke out against the Bears. He dominated the run with 14 carries for 131 yards and a trio of TDs. This performance gave him 33.70 FP, 4th for all RBs. He ran for an 18-yard TD in the second quarter, a 7-yard TD run in the third, and a game-sealing 54-yard TD rush in the 4th quarter to give Dallas 49 points.

Tony Pollard vs the Bears:

? 15 touches
? 147 total yards
? 3 touchdowns

RB1??? pic.twitter.com/oYtqIxAY2Y
— PFF (@PFF) October 30, 2022

Week 11 vs Minnesota Vikings

In a game between contenders, Dallas blew out Minnesota 40-3. Tony Pollard was big in the passing game with six catches for 109 yards and a couple of TDs. He wasn’t too shabby in the run game with 80 yards through 15 rushes. In a three-game stretch, Pollard scored 33.70, 21.80, and 36.90 FP in this game. He caught a 30-yard TD pass in the 2nd quarter and a 68-yard TD pass in the 3rd quarter. He finished RB 1 for the week.

RBs to trade for in dynasty

By: Jake Rajala

The dynasty fantasy football season is intensely in motion & football in Fall is right around the corner. With that said, I’m going to simply untwine five RBs to trade for in dynasty fantasy football. Let’s begin.

James Cook

The Buffalo Bills half-back James Cook is in the golden position and it appears that he could be the lead back sooner than expected. Furrow Sterling of Buffalo Rumblings believes Cook could be the lead RB in 2022. Furrow noted that he has impressive power with his size and 4.42 speed. The Bills writer also noted Cook has excelled in the passing game and that OC Ken Dorsey has placed Cook in multiple formation packages, too. I expect Cook to be a monster profile in the Bills offense for a long-time. Devin Singletary also will be a free agent in 2023 and I don’t foresee the Bills bringing him back.

Having this level of threat in the passing game out of the backfield hasn’t existed for Josh Allen. Another layer to the offense. Another area to attack because of James Cook

Credit to @AyeThatsLee for the video#Bills #BillsMafia #BillsCamp

pic.twitter.com/LPcoYadIVb
— Anthony Cover 1 (@Pro__Ant) August 9, 2022

Kenneth Walker

The former Michigan State RB Kenneth Walker should be a big asset in the Hawks offense moving forward. I don’t love Rashaad Penny’s injury history – as he hasn’t played 10+ games in each of the prior three seasons. Walker has already gained more reps with Penny dealing with injuries in training camp. I honestly believe that Walker and DK Metcalf are the future of the Seahawks offense that has a fat question mark at QB.

Tony Pollard

The Dallas Cowboys RB Tony Pollard is slowly catching up to the bell-cow RB Zeke Elliot. Pollard notched an impressive 1,056 all-purpose yds — after 628 total yds in the season prior. His well-rounded ability is why the Boys are planning to use him more in the slot in 2022. Per Dallas Morning News, offensive quality control coach Kyle Valero has been tutoring Pollard to excel from the slot.

Tony Pollard (ADP 8.01) is #myguy for 2022.

Flex player with huge upside. He's had 13+ touches in 8 games since 2020 ?? avg 14.2 fpts/g. Should see more targets with Cooper gone and an injured WR group. Plus, top-5 weekly start if Zeke misses game(s).

No risk it, no biscuit. https://t.co/ZPa9eLx6g1
— Jeff Greenwood (@TheFantasyEng) August 17, 2022

Cordarrelle Patterson

The versatile and explosive Cordarrelle Patterson returned to the Falcons on a two-year deal worth $10.5 million dollars. With Dave Ragone, aka the Falcons offensive coordinator and former Bears passing game coordinator, Patterson should continue to thrive in his RB/WR role. The Falcons will have a ton of quick passes and creative plays designed for the very underrated skill player.

Chase Edmonds

I really foresee the former AZ Cardinals RB Chase Edmonds having a career season in Miami – after he had personal best marks in total yds (903) and forced missed tackles (16) in 2020. The 49ers worked wonders with rookie Elijah Mitchell in 2021 – as Mitchell ran angry for 963 yds and 5 TDs in 11 contests. I expect Edmonds to really shine under the wiz Dolphins HC. The Phins may have Tyreek Hill and Jaylen Waddle, but it’s extremely important to not forget about the x-factor and starting RB Chase Edmonds.

BREAKING: The Miami Dolphins have an agreement on a 2-year deal with RB Chase Edmonds worth $12.6M & $6.1M guaranteed#PMSLive pic.twitter.com/0z6zbZwze8
— Pat McAfee (@PatMcAfeeShow) March 14, 2022

Latest outlook of Tony Pollard

By: Jake Rajala

The Dallas Cowboys best kept secret might just be RB Tony Pollard. The Cowboys 25-year-old RB earned a bigger piece of the pie in 2021, as he had a career-high 130 rushing attempts and a career-high 39 receptions. He was quite efficient with his rushing workload, as he averaged 5.5 YPC and was fourth in yards after contact. The Cowboys RB2 and kick return warrior finished as the RB30 in fantasy points per game.

Tony Pollard appreciation post ?

What stands out the MOST? ? pic.twitter.com/NMZmIpb02f
— The Game Day NFL (@TheGameDayNFL) April 21, 2022

Pollard is definitely an ascending RB and he could truly hit a Pro Bowl season if an injury to Zeke occurs, but the question is: what is his long-term outlook with Elliot? The steam for Pollard picked up in 2021 and I honestly believe that Pollard will be at least near a 50-50 slate with Zeke moving forward. He may not garner the same popularity, contract, or bell-cow ability, but I believe his well-rounded ability will rise to become indispensable in the Cowboys offense.

Dave Halprin from Blogging The Boys cites the demise of Zeke and his RYOE (rushing yards over expected) that has declined in each of the past few years and it would make sense if the aging, broken down RB, continues to have a worse RYOE in 2022. Halprin also elaborates that Zeke’s % of touches has declined from 78%, 70%, to 62%. I really believe Pollard will be more involved as a RB and he should be more involved in the Cowboys passing attack that lost Amari Cooper this off-season.

Tony Pollard says hello…and goodbye

Cowboys 20, Saints 10
(via @NFL) pic.twitter.com/4fQrFHIMee
— Jori Epstein (@JoriEpstein) December 3, 2021

I and the rest of the world expect Pollard to be the team’s starter in 2023. After this upcoming season, Zeke’s contract will be easier to eliminate or restructure and Pollard (who I expect them to re-sign in 2023) could be a stat machine in the Boys offense for a few seasons. I believe Pollard should eventually be the 1A at RB, remain a dynasty sleeper, and enjoy a Pro Bowl season or two in a very explosive Cowboys offense that dropped 50+ points in two of their last contests.

I firmly believe the Dallas Cowboys have a terrific floor in 2022, but they can really be Super Bowl contenders if they have x-factors ascend into quality contributors next season. With that said, I’m going to simply outline a few breakout candidates for the Boys in the 2022-2023 season.

Tony Pollard says hello…and goodbye

Cowboys 20, Saints 10
(via @NFL) pic.twitter.com/4fQrFHIMee
— Jori Epstein (@JoriEpstein) December 3, 2021

Tony Pollard

The 25-year-old Tony Pollard has been climbing the ladder over the past two seasons. He unveiled 719 rushing yards and 5.5 YPC in 15 games in 2021. I expect him to garner a bigger workload next season and transition from an efficient RB into a productive 1,000+ yard ball-carrier.

Zeke Elliot may have some gas left in the tank, but I believe Pollard will outmuscle him as the season is in progress. It would make sense for the Cowboys to test/lean on the legs of Pollard down the stretch, as he is likely the future RB in Dallas.

Dalton Schultz

Dalton Schultz had a fine 2021 season (808 yards, 8 touchdowns), but he is seeking bigger numbers in the Cowboys offense. Amari Cooper is out of the building and the mismatch nightmare Schultz could really be in line for more targets. The former Stanford pass catcher will also lay everything out on the line for a new, hefty contract in 2023 (if he doesn’t sign an extension this summer).

DAK AND DALTON SCHULTZ MANAGERS ARE COOKING ? pic.twitter.com/cgELdRr3vo
— PFF Fantasy Football (@PFF_Fantasy) November 26, 2021

Dante Fowler Jr.

I expect Dante Fowler Jr. to be the biggest surprise player on the Boys defense. He will be desperately striving to prove himself in a contract season and he will have better opportunities to be successful in a Cowboys uniform than in a Falcons uni. Outside of playing on a DL featuring Demarcus Lawrence, the reigning NFC East champions will be forcing opponents to keep pace with Dak in the passing game.

Ezekiel Elliot’s dynasty outlook in 2022

By: Jake Rajala

The Dallas Cowboys have reaped the benefits from the former Ohio State legend Ezekiel Elliott for six seasons. Zeke had a career-high 322 rushing attempts in his rookie season, which led to 1,631 rushing yards, 15 rushing touchdowns, and All-Pro honors.

Rookie records are in danger with the emergence of Ezekiel Elliott pic.twitter.com/JuQQCxFxIn
— Bleacher Report (@BleacherReport) October 12, 2016

Since the eclipse of his rookie season, Zeke has unleashed three 1,000+ rushing yd seasons and two seasons of 10+ rushing touchdowns. The Cowboys legend has also been fed in numerous ways, as he’s averaged 1,605 all-purpose yards in each season. It’s obvious that Jerry Jones showed his faith in Zeke by making him the highest-paid NFL RB on Sept. 4th of 2019.

It’s true that Zeke has unveiled one of the best six-season spans from the RB spot, but how much tread could actually be left on his tires? Elliott averaged 65.3 rushing YPG in 2020, which was a career-low mark at that point in time. His 58.9 rushing YPG mark in 2021 broke his 2020 career-low rushing number and it’s clear that his tank is losing gas. Meanwhile, Tony Pollard unveiled 719 rushing yards and averaged 5.5 yards per carry. Pollard is hurting fantasy owners of Zeke, to say the least.

Zeke is currently the 22nd-ranked RB in dynasty RB rankings (PPR) on Fantasy Pros. The Cowboys RB1 that has more career touches than any other RB starter shouldn’t return to being an overly impressive RB for the Cowboys, but I believe the 26-year-old can be a 1,000+ rushing-yard RB for one or two seasons.

I wouldn’t be thrilled about the bruised RB behind the Cowboys struggling offensive line. The Cowboys offensive line is far from the OL unit that propelled Zeke or really helped Demarco Murray. Most importantly, the 24-year-old Pollard is coming off a career season and he could realistically be the future of the Cowboys backfield after one or two seasons. Zeke is a dying breed, so it’s time to celebrate the remaining magic by pardoning him if possible and enjoying his limited highlights on TV.

Can the Cowboys win a Super Bowl without Zeke?

By: Jake Rajala and Charlie Vakassian

Ezekiel Elliott has been one of the top running backs in the NFL for a long time. Zeke’s presence on the Dallas Cowboys has been vital for the Cowboys success. Nonetheless, the reigning NFC East champions have bigger leaders (Micah Parsons, Dak Prescot, Trevon Diggs) and a slightly different direction in 2022.

There have been rumors that the ascending Cowboys could ship out the expensive RB. Cowboys Maven recently asked the world what the Cowboys should do with the “$17 million dollar question”. With that said, we decided to give our testimony on whether the team in Dallas should pardon Zeke. Let’s take a look.

Ezekiel Elliot game clinching 85 yard touchdown run against Alabama to send Ohio State to the National Championship (2015) pic.twitter.com/CNCEjfdPM2
— Ohio State Clips (@OhioStateClips) October 31, 2018

Why the Cowboys should keep Zeke (Jake):

The Dallas Cowboys are on the brink of making it to the Super Bowl. They have ascending stars like Dak Prescott and Micah Parsons. They still have a short-term window to chase Super Bowl royalty with Ezekiel Elliot on the Boys team. I also feel like Jerry Jones really wants a Super Bowl soon and they haven’t tasted a sweet Lombardi in quite some time. They haven’t won a Super Bowl since 1996.

When Zeke is playing at a high level, the Cowboys and Prescott are a much more potent team. The Boys have a 26-4 record when their star RB rushes for 100+ yards, according to statmuse. It’s basically impossible to beat a Dak Prescott-led team when Zeke is playing like he’s from another planet. Zeke helps Prescott start in more manageable situations, be more efficient on the play-action game, and he helps his talented defense get more rest.

If the Cowboys ship out Zeke, they could waste Prescott’s talent. We’ve seen Russell Wilson and Kyler Murray very disgruntled with their situation. The Cowboys may feel spoiled with Elliot in their backfield, but Prescott might feel more attracted to a different “dream team” if his buddy isn’t in his offense anymore. The Cowboys shouldn’t take the gas off the pedal just yet. They should follow the Saints formula, where they have their studs Michael Thomas and Ryan Ramczyk recently) restructure their contracts. The Saints are in cap hell every season, but they walk the fine line of chaos and find a way to retain their key stars.

The Cowboys will also likely lose Gallup, so they should really keep the talented Elliot in their offensive attack. Elliot is also 26 years old and I strongly believe he can be more efficient for a couple of more seasons at least. When Zeke is 29 or 30 years old, then they should consider trading him. Prescott, Elliot, and Cooper can absolutely come out guns blazing in an NFC conference that may see the LA Rams, Green Bay Packers, and Arizona Cardinals look worse next season.

Davante Adams: “We going back to the Packers?”

Aaron Rodgers: https://t.co/VdZwYijFPZ
— Josiah Johnson (@KingJosiah54) February 22, 2022

Why the Cowboys should trade Zeke (Charles):

The Dallas Cowboys are the cream of the crop in the NFC East, with the most talented quarterback by far, and an explosive offense. A key component of said offense is the star running back Ezekiel Elliot. Coming off of a solid season where he cracked over 1,000 yards and scored 12 times, Elliot is still one of the top backs in the game. This is exactly why the Cowboys should capitalize now and trade Elliot.

There are many star RBs that could be traded this offseason: Saquon, CMC, and Zeke. The Cowboys already have another young cheap, productive RB in Tony Pollard. Pollard is only 24 and had over 1000 total yards while acting as a backup. He could potentially outproduce Elliot if given a chance to start.

It's time to unleash Tony Pollard ? pic.twitter.com/6omA4SzbyV
— PFF Fantasy Football (@PFF_Fantasy) February 27, 2022

Dallas is also in salary cap hell, $22M over the barrier. They will want to make space. Elliot is under a 6 year, $90M albatross contract. Second contracts for running backs typically do not pan out well. This contract runs through 2027 when Elliot would be 31. Running backs have a short shelf life, and we may have already seen the best days of Zeke. Dallas could save almost $13M against the cap this year by trading Elliot post June 1st.

Getting that money off the books would be huge, and having a more than capable backup in Pollard lessens the need for a superstar at RB. Other positions are way more valuable to the team, like edge rushers, corners, and wideouts, which all happen to be team needs for the Cowboys this offseason. By trading Ezekiel Elliot, Dallas can focus its efforts on upgrading more premium positions, to make the Cowboys a more balanced team.
