TEAM SUPER BOWL HISTORY
How Many Super Bowls Have the Denver Broncos Won?
The Denver Broncos have won three Super Bowls in eight appearances.
Denver lost its first four trips by at least 17 points before Terrell Davis and the run game finally carried the franchise through Green Bay. The Broncos repeated in John Elway’s final game, then returned 17 years later with a defense that won Super Bowl 50 on its own terms.

Four Losses Before the Breakthrough
The first four appearances were not one repeated failure. Dallas took the ball away eight times in Super Bowl XII. The Giants pulled away after halftime in Super Bowl XXI, Washington scored 35 points in one quarter the next year and San Francisco overwhelmed Denver from the opening drive in Super Bowl XXIV.
The common result was a decisive loss, but Denver eventually changed the terms. Davis gave the Broncos a running game Green Bay could not push aside, and the next team sent Elway out with another title. Super Bowl 50 belonged to Von Miller and a defense that could win without asking the offense to carry the night.

A 17-Point Loss Is Denver’s Closest Defeat
Denver’s smallest Super Bowl loss was 27–10 against Dallas in Super Bowl XII. The Broncos were within three points at halftime, but eight turnovers kept sending the defense back onto the field and stopped every chance to build pressure on Dallas.
Calling that the closest loss says more about the first four trips than it does about one competitive finish. Denver did not have a late possession to tie any of those games. The franchise had to wait until Super Bowl XXXII for a fourth quarter that it could control.
GAME-BY-GAME HISTORY
Denver Broncos Super Bowl Results, Explained
1978 · Denver Broncos vs. Dallas Cowboys
Super Bowl XII
Dallas Cowboys 27, Denver Broncos 10
- Location
- Louisiana Superdome · New Orleans, Louisiana
- MVP
- Harvey Martin & Randy White
Turning point: Dallas forced eight turnovers, including four before halftime, and kept starting with favorable field position.
Craig Morton faced his former team and completed only four passes while the Broncos lost four fumbles and threw four interceptions. Denver trailed 13–10 at halftime, but the defense could not keep surviving short fields. Harvey Martin and Randy White shared MVP honors after Dallas finished the pressure it had created all night.
1987 · Denver Broncos vs. New York Giants
Super Bowl XXI
New York Giants 39, Denver Broncos 20
- Location
- Rose Bowl · Pasadena, California
- MVP
- Phil Simms
Turning point: New York scored 17 unanswered points in the third quarter and turned a 10–9 deficit into a 26–10 lead.
Elway’s rushing touchdown helped Denver carry a one-point lead into halftime. Phil Simms then attacked an increasingly open field while the Giants defense stopped giving Denver clean drives. New York scored on its first four second-half possessions and removed any chance of another late Elway finish.
1988 · Denver Broncos vs. Washington Redskins
Super Bowl XXII
Washington Redskins 42, Denver Broncos 10
- Location
- Jack Murphy Stadium · San Diego, California
- MVP
- Doug Williams
Turning point: Washington scored 35 points in the second quarter, the largest single-quarter total in Super Bowl history.
Elway hit Ricky Nattiel for a touchdown on Denver’s first play from scrimmage and the Broncos led 10–0. Williams answered with repeated deep throws, and Denver’s coverage could not slow the pace once Washington found the matchup. Five touchdowns in one quarter settled the game before halftime.
1990 · Denver Broncos vs. San Francisco 49ers
Super Bowl XXIV
San Francisco 49ers 55, Denver Broncos 10
- Location
- Louisiana Superdome · New Orleans, Louisiana
- MVP
- Joe Montana
Turning point: Joe Montana threw three first-half touchdown passes as the 49ers built a 27–3 halftime lead.
Denver never made Montana hold the ball, and the 49ers created explosive plays before the Broncos could settle into the game. Montana threw five touchdown passes while San Francisco’s defense forced four turnovers. The 45-point margin remains the largest in Super Bowl history.
1998 · Denver Broncos vs. Green Bay Packers
Super Bowl XXXII
Green Bay Packers 24, Denver Broncos 31
- Location
- Qualcomm Stadium · San Diego, California
- MVP
- Terrell Davis
Turning point: Elway’s third-down scramble and collision near the goal line helped set up a Davis touchdown that tied the game in the third quarter.
Davis kept producing even while dealing with a migraine, and Denver never let Green Bay turn the game into a pure passing contest. His third touchdown gave the Broncos the lead with 1:45 left. The defense then forced Brett Favre into four straight incompletions and ended the franchise’s 0–4 start.
1999 · Denver Broncos vs. Atlanta Falcons
Super Bowl XXXIII
Atlanta Falcons 19, Denver Broncos 34
- Location
- Pro Player Stadium · Miami, Florida
- MVP
- John Elway
Turning point: Elway found Rod Smith for an 80-yard touchdown that gave Denver a 17–3 lead in the second quarter.
The Falcons slowed Davis compared with the year before, but that choice opened throws for Elway. He passed for 336 yards, ran for a touchdown and controlled his final NFL game. Denver repeated because the offense could win differently once Atlanta committed to the run.
2014 · Denver Broncos vs. Seattle Seahawks
Super Bowl XLVIII
Seattle Seahawks 43, Denver Broncos 8
- Location
- MetLife Stadium · East Rutherford, New Jersey
- MVP
- Malcolm Smith
Turning point: The first snap sailed past Peyton Manning for a safety 12 seconds into the game.
The opening safety did not decide the game alone, but it announced a night Denver never reset. Seattle’s coverage took away the timing throws, the pass rush forced hurried decisions and Percy Harvin opened the second half with a kickoff return touchdown. Four Denver turnovers made the 43–8 margin match the control Seattle had from the start.
2016 · Denver Broncos vs. Carolina Panthers
Super Bowl 50
Carolina Panthers 10, Denver Broncos 24
- Location
- Levi's Stadium · Santa Clara, California
- MVP
- Von Miller
Turning point: Von Miller stripped Cam Newton in the first quarter, and Malik Jackson recovered the ball in the end zone.
Miller beat Carolina’s protection for 2.5 sacks and forced two fumbles, including another strip that set up the clinching touchdown. Denver scored only one offensive touchdown, but the defense produced seven sacks and held Carolina to ten points. This championship was not a repeat of the Elway years; the defense carried the game from the first pressure to the last.
Denver Won Three Titles Through Different Strengths
The first championship was built around Davis forcing Green Bay to respect the run on every down. The second let Elway attack Atlanta off that balance in his final game. The third came with Miller, DeMarcus Ware and the defense collapsing Carolina’s protection before the offense had to take risks.
That makes Denver’s eight appearances easy to divide but hard to reduce to one player. Elway connects five of them, yet the breakthrough required Davis and the final championship came from a defense strong enough to write a separate ending.
