TEAM SUPER BOWL HISTORY

How Many Super Bowls Have the Philadelphia Eagles Won?

The Philadelphia Eagles have won two Super Bowls in five appearances.

Philadelphia waited through two losses and 37 seasons between its first Super Bowl trip and its first championship. The Eagles then returned three times in eight seasons, winning with Nick Foles and Doug Pederson before Jalen Hurts and Nick Sirianni finished a different run. Both titles came against teams that had already beaten Philadelphia on this stage.

The Long Wait Ended, Then Philadelphia Came Back for More

The 1980 Eagles reached the game behind Ron Jaworski and Dick Vermeil, but Oakland’s defense never let the offense find a rhythm. Andy Reid and Donovan McNabb brought Philadelphia back 24 years later and stayed within one score of New England. Neither trip produced the franchise’s first Lombardi Trophy.

Super Bowl LII changed the history because Philadelphia attacked New England instead of waiting for the game to tighten. Seven years later, the Eagles returned to New Orleans and overwhelmed Kansas City in the rematch. The two championship teams shared a fearless approach, but the quarterbacks, coaches and roster strengths were different.

Super Bowl LVII Was the Closest Loss

Philadelphia lost Super Bowls XXXIX and LVII by three points, but the Kansas City game reached the final seconds with the score still tied. Hurts had just led a touchdown drive and ran in the two-point conversion to make it 35–35 with 5:15 left.

Mahomes answered with a long scramble, and a defensive holding call on James Bradberry allowed Kansas City to drain most of the clock before Butker’s field goal. The Eagles got one last kickoff return and a desperation pass. They never received a normal possession after tying the game.

GAME-BY-GAME HISTORY

Philadelphia Eagles Super Bowl Results, Explained

1981 · Oakland Raiders

Super Bowl XV

Oakland Raiders 27, Eagles 10

Location
Louisiana Superdome · New Orleans, Louisiana
MVP
Jim Plunkett

Turning point: Rod Martin intercepted Jaworski on Philadelphia’s opening drive and set up the Raiders’ first touchdown.

The Eagles had built their season around defense and ball control, but the first turnover put them behind before that plan could settle. Jim Plunkett hit Cliff Branch for two touchdowns, and Martin finished with three interceptions. Philadelphia scored once in the fourth quarter, long after Oakland had taken control.

2005 · New England Patriots

Super Bowl XXXIX

New England Patriots 24, Eagles 21

Location
Alltel Stadium · Jacksonville, Florida
MVP
Deion Branch

Turning point: The Patriots scored on their first two second-half possessions, changing a 7–7 game into a 21–14 deficit.

McNabb found L.J. Smith and Brian Westbrook for touchdowns, but New England kept the ball away with Corey Dillon and short throws to Deion Branch. Philadelphia cut the margin to three and recovered the ball once more. Rodney Harrison’s interception with nine seconds left ended the final attempt before the Eagles crossed midfield.

2018 · New England Patriots

Super Bowl LII

New England Patriots 33, Eagles 41

Location
U.S. Bank Stadium · Minneapolis, Minnesota
MVP
Nick Foles

Turning point: Brandon Graham stripped Brady with 2:09 left and the Eagles protecting a five-point lead.

Foles matched Brady drive for drive, caught the Philly Special touchdown and later found Zach Ertz for the go-ahead score. New England still had time to answer until Graham beat the guard and knocked the ball loose. Jake Elliott’s field goal pushed the margin to eight, and Philadelphia’s first Super Bowl championship survived the last heave.

2023 · Kansas City Chiefs

Super Bowl LVII

Kansas City Chiefs 38, Eagles 35

Location
State Farm Stadium · Glendale, Arizona
MVP
Patrick Mahomes

Turning point: Toney’s 65-yard punt return gave Kansas City a short field for the touchdown that created an eight-point lead.

Hurts accounted for four touchdowns and tied the game with a late scoring drive plus the conversion. The problem was everything between Philadelphia possessions: Kansas City scored on every meaningful second-half series. Mahomes’ final scramble and the holding call let the Chiefs take the clock down before Butker’s kick.

2025 · Kansas City Chiefs

Super Bowl LIX

Kansas City Chiefs 22, Eagles 40

Location
Caesars Superdome · New Orleans, Louisiana
MVP
Jalen Hurts

Turning point: DeJean’s interception return put the Eagles ahead 17–0 and turned Kansas City’s early offensive problems into a scoreboard crisis.

The Eagles reached Mahomes with four rushers, covered the quick outlets and took a 24–0 lead into halftime. Hurts threw a 46-yard touchdown to DeVonta Smith, while the defense kept the Chiefs scoreless until the margin reached 34. Philadelphia won the rematch 40–22 and denied Kansas City a third straight championship.

Philadelphia Turned Two Old Losses Into Two Modern Titles

The Eagles did not erase their earlier losses by copying the teams that made them. Foles won a scoring race against Brady, while Hurts and the 2024 defense controlled Kansas City before halftime. Philadelphia’s two championships came through opposite paths.

The recent frequency also changes the page. Four of the five appearances have come since 2005, and three arrived from the 2017 season forward. The first trip now feels like a separate chapter rather than the main reference point for the franchise.
