How Many Super Bowls Have the Indianapolis Colts Won?

The Indianapolis Colts have won two Super Bowls in four appearances.

The first two trips came when the team was still in Baltimore. Super Bowls III and V belong to Colts history just like Peyton Manning’s two trips with Indianapolis. They do not belong to the Baltimore Ravens, who are a separate franchise.

The Colts’ Super Bowl History Starts in Baltimore

The Baltimore Colts were heavy favorites in Super Bowl III and Joe Namath’s Jets beat them 16–7. Two years later Baltimore got back and beat Dallas 16–13 on Jim O’Brien’s field goal with five seconds left. That title belongs to the Colts franchise even though the team later moved to Indianapolis.

Indianapolis did not get back until the Peyton Manning era. The Colts shook off Devin Hester’s opening kickoff touchdown and beat Chicago 29–17 in the rain. Three years later they led New Orleans 10–0 before Sean Payton’s onside kick and Tracy Porter’s interception return flipped Super Bowl XLIV.

Super Bowl V Was the Colts’ Tightest Finish

The Colts’ closest Super Bowl was their 16–13 championship win over Dallas. The teams combined for 11 turnovers and Baltimore had to finish with backup quarterback Earl Morrall after Johnny Unitas left the game.

Mike Curtis’ late interception gave Baltimore the short field it needed. Jim O’Brien then made a 32-yard field goal with five seconds left. It was not a clean game, but the Colts turned the final Dallas mistake into the play that won the franchise’s first Super Bowl.

Indianapolis Colts Super Bowl Results, Explained

1969 · Baltimore Colts vs. New York Jets

Super Bowl III

New York Jets 16, Baltimore Colts 7

Location
Orange Bowl · Miami, Florida
MVP
Joe Namath

Turning point: New York carried a 16–0 lead into the fourth quarter after the Jets defense repeatedly ended Baltimore drives with interceptions.

The Colts could not turn their regular-season dominance into points. New York used Matt Snell and a controlled passing game to stay on schedule while its defense intercepted Baltimore four times. Johnny Unitas replaced Earl Morrall and led a late touchdown drive, but the 16–7 loss was already beyond one possession.

1971 · Baltimore Colts vs. Dallas Cowboys

Super Bowl V

Dallas Cowboys 13, Baltimore Colts 16

Location
Orange Bowl · Miami, Florida
MVP
Chuck Howley

Turning point: Mike Curtis intercepted Craig Morton late in the fourth quarter and returned the ball into Dallas territory.

The teams combined for 11 turnovers and neither offense held control for long. Curtis’ interception gave Baltimore the last short-field chance in a 13–13 game. O’Brien made the 32-yard field goal with five seconds left and the Baltimore Colts left with the franchise’s first Super Bowl championship.

2007 · Indianapolis Colts vs. Chicago Bears

Super Bowl XLI

Chicago Bears 17, Indianapolis Colts 29

Location
Dolphin Stadium · Miami Gardens, Florida
MVP
Peyton Manning

Turning point: Kelvin Hayden returned a Rex Grossman interception for a touchdown in the fourth quarter and stretched the Colts lead to 29–17.

Hester returned the opening kickoff 92 yards for a touchdown but Indianapolis answered with Manning’s deep touchdown pass to Reggie Wayne. Joseph Addai and Dominic Rhodes kept the offense moving in the rain while the Colts defense limited Chicago’s passing game. Hayden’s pick-six made it 29–17 and effectively ended Chicago’s comeback.

2010 · Indianapolis Colts vs. New Orleans Saints

Super Bowl XLIV

New Orleans Saints 31, Indianapolis Colts 17

Location
Sun Life Stadium · Miami Gardens, Florida
MVP
Drew Brees

Turning point: The Saints recovered a surprise onside kick to open the second half and turned the extra possession into a touchdown.

The Colts led 10–0 and still held a 10–6 edge at halftime. New Orleans stole the first possession of the third quarter, Brees kept completing throws and the Saints eventually moved ahead. Porter’s 74-yard interception return with 3:12 left turned a one-score game into the final 31–17 margin.

Two of the Colts’ Four Super Bowls Came in Baltimore

Super Bowls III and V belong to the Baltimore Colts. The franchise moved to Indianapolis in 1984, so those games stay with Colts history. They do not belong to the Baltimore Ravens.

Baltimore won one on the final kick after a game with 11 combined turnovers. Indianapolis won the other by answering Hester’s opening touchdown and wearing Chicago down in the rain.
