TEAM SUPER BOWL HISTORY
How Many Super Bowls Have the Kansas City Chiefs Won?
The Kansas City Chiefs have won four Super Bowls in seven appearances.
Kansas City’s first championship came with Len Dawson and Hank Stram before the AFL-NFL merger. Fifty years passed before Patrick Mahomes and Andy Reid won the next one, then the Chiefs turned one breakthrough into five appearances in six seasons. The modern run changed the franchise from an early Super Bowl landmark into the team everyone had to beat.

A Fifty-Year Gap, Then Three Titles in Five Seasons
The Chiefs were part of the first Super Bowl and returned three years later with a defense that overwhelmed Minnesota. Dawson’s win in Super Bowl IV gave the AFL another major result before the leagues completed their merger. Kansas City did not make the game again until Mahomes arrived.
Reid and Mahomes broke the drought in Super Bowl LIV, lost to Tampa Bay the next year and then reached three straight from LVII through LIX. Back-to-back wins over Philadelphia and San Francisco put Kansas City one victory from the first three-peat of the Super Bowl era. Philadelphia stopped it before halftime in the rematch.

Kansas City’s Losses Were Never One-Score Games
The Chiefs’ smallest Super Bowl defeat was still an 18-point loss to Philadelphia in Super Bowl LIX. Kansas City entered with a chance to win three straight championships, but the offense gave up six sacks and failed to score before the Eagles built a 34–0 lead.
That result is different from the close losses found on most franchise pages. Green Bay controlled the second half of the inaugural game, Tampa Bay kept Mahomes out of the end zone in Super Bowl LV and Philadelphia buried the three-peat attempt. Kansas City’s four wins have been competitive; its three losses were decided early or decisively.
GAME-BY-GAME HISTORY
Kansas City Chiefs Super Bowl Results, Explained
1967 · Green Bay Packers
Super Bowl I
Green Bay Packers 35, Chiefs 10
- Location
- Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum · Los Angeles, California
- MVP
- Bart Starr
Turning point: Willie Wood intercepted Dawson early in the third quarter and returned the ball to the Chiefs’ 5-yard line.
The Chiefs trailed only 14–10 at halftime and had moved the ball well enough to make the first Super Bowl competitive. Wood’s interception set up an Elijah Pitts touchdown, and Green Bay scored 21 unanswered points after the break. Kansas City did not cross midfield again until the final minutes.
1970 · Minnesota Vikings
Super Bowl IV
Minnesota Vikings 7, Chiefs 23
- Location
- Tulane Stadium · New Orleans, Louisiana
- MVP
- Len Dawson
Turning point: The Chiefs forced five turnovers and carried a 16–0 lead into halftime.
Stram’s offense kept Minnesota guessing with motion and trap runs, while Jan Stenerud converted three first-half field goals. The Vikings scored once in the third quarter, but Dawson answered with a short throw that Otis Taylor turned into a 46-yard touchdown. Kansas City’s first championship was never in danger after that response.
2020 · San Francisco 49ers
Super Bowl LIV
San Francisco 49ers 20, Chiefs 31
- Location
- Hard Rock Stadium · Miami Gardens, Florida
- MVP
- Patrick Mahomes
Turning point: Mahomes found Tyreek Hill for 44 yards on third-and-15, starting a run of 21 unanswered points.
The 49ers had pressured Mahomes into two interceptions and carried a 20–10 lead into the final period. The third-and-long completion changed the game before Kansas City reached the end zone. Mahomes followed with touchdown drives to Travis Kelce and Damien Williams, ending the franchise’s 50-year wait.
2021 · Tampa Bay Buccaneers
Super Bowl LV
Tampa Bay Buccaneers 31, Chiefs 9
- Location
- Raymond James Stadium · Tampa, Florida
- MVP
- Tom Brady
Turning point: The Buccaneers scored two touchdowns in the final six minutes of the first half to build a 21–6 lead.
Kansas City entered without both starting tackles, and Tampa Bay attacked the protection without needing heavy blitzes. Mahomes spent the night escaping pressure and throwing from bad platforms, while the Chiefs managed only three field goals. The 31–9 loss remains the only Super Bowl in the Mahomes era without a Kansas City touchdown.
2023 · Philadelphia Eagles
Super Bowl LVII
Philadelphia Eagles 35, Chiefs 38
- Location
- State Farm Stadium · Glendale, Arizona
- MVP
- Patrick Mahomes
Turning point: Kadarius Toney’s 65-yard punt return set up a touchdown that pushed the Chiefs ahead 35–27.
Mahomes aggravated his ankle before halftime and Kansas City went to the locker room down ten. Reid created two wide-open red-zone touchdowns after the break, and Toney’s return gave the offense a short field for another. Jalen Hurts tied the game, but Mahomes scrambled into field-goal range and Harrison Butker won it with eight seconds left.
2024 · San Francisco 49ers
Super Bowl LVIII
San Francisco 49ers 22, Chiefs 25
- Location
- Allegiant Stadium · Paradise, Nevada
- MVP
- Patrick Mahomes
Turning point: Mahomes converted fourth-and-1 with his legs on the overtime possession, keeping the championship alive.
San Francisco led by ten early and scored first in overtime, forcing the Chiefs to answer with a touchdown or keep matching the game. Mahomes converted two third downs and the fourth-down run before reaching the red zone. Mecole Hardman slipped free in the flat for the winning score and Kansas City’s first repeat championship.
2025 · Philadelphia Eagles
Super Bowl LIX
Philadelphia Eagles 40, Chiefs 22
- Location
- Caesars Superdome · New Orleans, Louisiana
- MVP
- Jalen Hurts
Turning point: Cooper DeJean returned Mahomes’ interception 38 yards for a touchdown, making the score 17–0 in the second quarter.
The Chiefs could not protect Mahomes or create a reliable answer underneath, and the Eagles reached halftime ahead 24–0. Kansas City’s first points came after Philadelphia had stretched the lead to 34. The late touchdowns changed the final score, not the direction of the game, and the bid for three straight titles ended 40–22.
The Mahomes Run Rewrote the Entire Record
Before 2020, Kansas City’s Super Bowl story was a split from the AFL years: one loss, one championship and a half-century away from the game. Mahomes and Reid added five appearances and three titles in six seasons. That is not an extension of the old history. It is the section that now defines it.
The Chiefs also won their modern championships in different ways. They erased a ten-point fourth-quarter deficit against San Francisco, survived a scoring race with Philadelphia and finished an overtime drive in the Las Vegas rematch. The loss in New Orleans showed the other side of repeated deep runs: eventually an opponent can take away every escape route.
