Which NFL team has the fewest weak spots entering 2026? PFM’s answer is the Rams. Seattle, Kansas City, Philadelphia and San Francisco round out the top five when the focus is quarterback, roster, coaching, offense and defense.
For this exercise, each team’s lowest grade among those five sets the order. Recent Performance and Franchise Direction still count in the official PFM Team Score, but they are not part of this list.
Method: The lowest grade sets each team’s floor. The higher the floor, the higher the team ranks. There is no new PFM score.

Chicago is the first team out at 81.2, followed by Denver at 80.9 and Detroit at 80.5.
1. The Rams Have the Fewest Weak Spots
Lowest Grade: Roster Strength 85.0
Los Angeles has strengths on both sides of the ball and a proven quarterback-coach pairing. Even Roster Strength, the lowest of these five grades, is at 85.0.
Matthew Stafford and Sean McVay still give Los Angeles one of the toughest passing games to defend, especially with Puka Nacua winning at every level. Myles Garrett gives the defense a pass rusher who can wreck a drive by himself. The offense comes in at 88.0 and the defense at 86.2.
The real concern is Stafford staying healthy. If he does, there is no weak spot in these five grades that should force the Rams to play one specific kind of game. One interesting note: If Franchise Direction were included, the Rams would likely drop off this list because that grade also accounts for young talent, salary cap and draft capital.
2. Seattle’s Weakest Grade Is Still a Strength
Lowest Grade: QB Stability 84.5
Seattle can control a game without asking Sam Darnold to carry the offense. That is why QB Stability can be the team’s lowest grade at 84.5 and still not feel like a hole.
Mike Macdonald’s defense leads the NFL at 89.6, while Jaxon Smith-Njigba gives Sam Darnold a clear No. 1 target in an offense graded at 86.5. Seattle can win with defense and doesn’t need its quarterback to play hero ball.
The concern is protection. If the line slips, the spotlight on Darnold intensifies. As long as Seattle keeps the run game in the equation, this is one of the hardest teams to push out of its preferred style.
3. Kansas City’s Offense Is the Lowest Grade?
Lowest Grade: Offense 83.2
Patrick Mahomes and Andy Reid still give Kansas City one of the best quarterback-coach combinations in football. The surprise is that Offense is actually the lowest of these five grades at 83.2.
Reid gives the Chiefs the NFL’s No. 1 Coaching Direction grade at 92.3. Chris Jones still anchors a defense at 83.8, so Mahomes does not have to turn every close game into a shootout. That matters as he makes his way back from his ACL injury.
The tackle situation and a lack of chunk plays are still worth watching. Those are real concerns. They just are not big enough to push any of these five grades below PFM’s strength range.
4. Philadelphia Still Starts With the Lines
Lowest Grade: Coaching Direction 82.4
Philadelphia still starts with the lines. Saquon Barkley and the offensive line can take over a game, while Jalen Carter and the defensive front give the Eagles the same kind of edge on the other side of the ball.
The passing game is where things get interesting. With changes around the staff and receiver room, Jalen Hurts has to punish defenses that load the box to stop Barkley. If he does, Philadelphia is tough to squeeze into one style of game.
5. San Francisco’s Defense Is the One Question Mark
Lowest Grade: Defense 81.9
San Francisco still has enough star power to play its usual style, but the defense is the one grade keeping all five areas in PFM’s strength range. It sits at 81.9, just outside PFM’s strength range.
With Nick Bosa and Fred Warner, the issue is not a lack of star power. The defense has to get off the field more consistently. They are also getting older and the injury risk is one we can’t ignore.
San Francisco is the cutoff for this list. Chicago is only 0.7 points behind, so the 49ers do not have much room if the defense takes a step back.
What This Says Before Week 1
The Rams are the most interesting result. PFM still has Seattle No. 1 overall but Los Angeles has the better floor when the question is only quarterback, roster, coaching, offense and defense.
Kansas City and Philadelphia are not flawless. The Chiefs still have offensive questions and the Eagles need the passing game to punish loaded boxes. The difference is that neither problem is bad enough to become an obvious weakness.
San Francisco is where the list gets tight. Chicago is only 0.7 points behind, with Denver and Detroit close too. Once the season starts, one weak stretch can change this quickly.
