What the 2026 NFL Coaching Age Breakdown Shows

The youngest hires get plenty of attention, but this is not a league run only by thirty-somethings. The average current head coach is 48.1, and the median is 45.5. The biggest group is the middle: 15 coaches are in their 40s, compared with 5 under 40 and 7 who are 60 or older.

Average age48.1 years
Median age45.5 years
Coaches under 405 coaches
Coaches 60 or older7 coaches

Age also falls apart as a shortcut for coaching quality. Mike Macdonald is 39, and the Seattle Seahawks sit at 87.8, No. 2 in the league in Coaching Direction. Andy Reid is 68, and the Kansas City Chiefs sit at 92.3, No. 1 in the league. Different points in a career can produce strong staffs for completely different reasons.

That range is why coaching searches can look inconsistent from one team to the next. A roster with a young quarterback may want a teacher and play designer. A veteran team may care more about staff management, situational football and keeping the locker room pointed in one direction.

The age of the head coach also does not tell you the age of the ideas around him. A young coach can lean on veteran coordinators and a proven playbook. An older coach can change his scheme, hand more control to an aggressive coordinator and build a fresh staff. What matters is whether those pieces fit the quarterback and the roster.

That is why teams keep hiring from different age groups. Some want a play-caller who can take ownership of one side of the ball. Others want a program builder who has already handled the weekly pressure of the job. Leadership, quarterback development, staff-building and game management matter far more than one perfect age. The PFM Coaching Direction rankings focus on that current football operation instead of treating a birth year like a grade.
